Five-year report of the policy and planning board: Do not let them immanentize the eschaton! Diversity: Strengths and strains.

The somewhat unusually worded subheading calls attention to some of the deliberations of the Policy and Planning Board in preparation for this 5-yr report mandated by the bylaws of the American Psychological Association. The Board considered the implications of issues concerning decreased federal funding for research; stabilization of enrollments in colleges and universities; the disenchantment of many individuals with national political processes; the politicization within the Association; and a number of additional processes and issues which to some would forecast a dark and gloomy future. After discussing some of the diversities within the Association, this report focuses on the organization of APA; psychology and social issues; scientific issues and contributions; employment patterns for new doctorates in psychology; and some forecasts regarding the future of psychology. Don't forget the children

Serious illness or hospitalization of a parent is potentially destructive to the mental health of the child. Stress is caused by both the separation and the illness itself. If the physician does not ensure that the situation is explained to the child, it is likely the child will be confused and frightened and any attempts at clarification will be blocked in the attendant family dysfunction. The general principles of prevention are to share the facts of the situation with the child and to allow him his natural and varied reactions. The family interview is useful in clearing up misunderstandings, sharing feelings and working out family roles.     

Sudan, through the back door

South Sudan has five million inhabitants and has been fighting a war of independence with North Sudan since 1959. The hostilities have totally disrupted society and the country is the most inaccessible of Africa. International non-government organizations co-operate in relief activities in the 'Operation Life Line'. Semi-nomadic pastoral tribes populate South Sudan. Doctors Without Borders assisted in fighting a major epidemic of kala azar in the late eighties which cost some 200,000 lives; the organization still provides medical aid in the country.

The author expresses his opinions concerning the relationship between research and teaching in psychology. Most psychologists spend a portion of their time in teaching. For many it is their most important activity in terms of the amount of time spent and the proportion of income received. Most psychologists think of themselves as scientists and spend a portion of time in planning and carrying out research. Many psychologists who are employed primarily as teachers elect to be in the laboratory during any time which can be spared from teaching. Almost all teaching psychologists, therefore, have two basic functions--one as a teacher and the other as a scientist. On the surface it may seem that the two roles are completely compatible but a more careful look reveals that there are inconsistencies between the behavior of the psychologist when he functions as a teacher and his behavior when he functions as a scientist. Valuing the past...investing in the future

The objective of this multicenter phase II study was to evaluate the activity of docetaxel in previously untreated small cell lung cancer. Fourteen patients were treated at a dose of 75 mg/m2 intravenously every three weeks. Of the 12 patients evaluable for response, one had a partial response for a duration of 12 weeks for a response rate of 8.3%. Toxicity was mild. We conclude that docetaxel has, at the dose given in this study, little activity in previously untreated small cell lung cancer.
