The role of the vertebral arteries in delaying loss of sensibility following neck sticking in slaughter calves was investigated. Vertebral artery blood flow was measured using probes before, during and after electrical stunning and slaughter. Systemic blood pressure, electrocorticogram, visually evoked responses and the occurrence of carotid occlusions were also recorded. When carotid occlusion occurred, the time to onset of brain failure was delayed based on the development of an isoelectric state. In addition, when carotid occlusion occurred the mean arterial blood pressure was sustained for longer following slaughter, and concurrently vertebral artery blood flow could be maintained at about 30% of its initial level for up to 3 min. In some animals vertebral artery flow increased substantially following sticking. When chest sticking was used no occlusion of vessels occurred, mean arterial blood pressure fell promptly (within 8 s) and the onset of an isoelectric state did not extend beyond one minute. In addition, visually evoked responses were not present after 5 s following chest sticking.  相似文献

The time of onset of permanent insensibility, subsequent to incision of the major blood vessels of the neck, was studied in sixteen adult sheep and five one-week-old lambs. Insensibility was determined from the study of electroencephalograms (EEG) and interpretation was based on the amplitude and pattern of fast wave signals of a transhemispheric bipolar derivation. In both adult sheep and lambs, conscious at the time of slaughter, insensibility occurred within 2 to 7 s and EEG traces became isoelectric between 10 and 43 s. In sheep which were lightly anaesthetised at the time of slaughter, EEG traces became isoelectric between 18 and 70 s after incision of the major blood vessels of the neck. In one sheep which was slaughtered by severance of the carotid artery and jugular vein on one side of the neck only, the onset of insensibility was delayed for 29 s. In the majority of animals, the electrocardiogram (ECG) continued to show a normal pattern for more than 10 min after slaughter. There was an initial rise in blood pressure in the first 5 to 7 s and it remained elevated for a further 10 to 20 s. The results of this work are discussed with reference to definition of death appropriate for statutory purposes and the implications for the humane slaughter of sheep.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of lactose inclusion in calf starters on plasma glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 and GLP-2 concentrations and gastrointestinal tract development in calves. Holstein bull calves (n = 45) were raised on an intensified nursing program using milk replacer containing 28.0% CP and 15.0% fat, and were fed a texturized calf starter containing 0 (control), 5.0 (LAC5), or 10.0% (LAC10; n = 15 for each treatment) lactose on a DM basis. Lactose was included in the starter by partially replacing dry ground corn in pelleted portion of the starter. All calf starters were formulated with 23.1% CP. The ethanol-soluble carbohydrate concentrations of the control, LAC5, and LAC10 starters were 7.3, 12.3, and 16.8% on a DM basis, respectively. Starch concentrations of the control, LAC5, and LAC10 starters were 29.7, 27.0, and 21.4% on a DM basis, respectively. All calves were fed treatment calf starters ad libitum. Blood samples were obtained weekly from 1 to 11 wk of age, and used to measure plasma GLP-1, GLP-2, and insulin concentrations, serum β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentration, and blood glucose concentration. At 80 d of age, calves were euthanized, and weights of the reticulorumen, omasum, abomasum, small intestine, and large intestine tissue were measured. Serum BHB concentration was higher for calves fed the LAC10 (171 μmol/L) starter than for those fed the control (151 μmol/L) and LAC5 (145 μmol/L) starters. Plasma GLP-1 and GLP-2 concentrations did not differ between treatments. However, relative to the baseline (1 wk of age), the plasma GLP-1 concentration was higher for the LAC10 (125.9%) than for the LAC5 (68.2%) and control (36.8%), and for the LAC5 than for the control (36.8%). Moreover, similar differences between treatments were observed for GLP-2 concentration relative to the baseline (88.2, 76.9, and 74.9% for LAC10, LAC5, and control treatments, respectively). The serum BHB concentration was positively correlated with the plasma GLP-1 concentration (r = 0.428). Furthermore, the plasma GLP-1 concentration was positively correlated with the insulin concentration (r = 0.793). The weights of the reticulorumen, omasum, abomasum, small intestine, and large intestine were not affected by the treatments. In conclusion, inclusion of lactose in calf starters resulted in higher plasma GLP-1 and GLP-2 concentrations, and BHB might be associated with higher plasma GLP-1 concentration.  相似文献

The time of onset of permanent insensibility subsequent to incision of the major blood vessels of the neck was studied in one 31-day-old calf and two 42-day-old calves. Insensibility was determined from the study of electroencephalograms (EEG). Insensibility first occurred at 28, 30 and 168s, respectively. Following respiratory gasps, all three animals subsequently showed resurgences of cerebrocortical activity for periods of between 130 and 187s, and EEGs did not become isoelectric again for 116 to 300s after slaughter. These results are similar to those previously recorded in 1-week-old calves and are in disagreement with the findings of Nangeroni & Kenneth (1963) which indicated that 8-week-old calves became permanently insensible within 6·9s of slaughter.  相似文献

Parallel electrocorticograms (ECoG) and electroencephalograms (EEG) were recorded during stun-recovery and stun-slaughter of eight calves 4-6 weeks old. Epochs of 8·2 s duration, derived from the ECoG and EEG signals pre-stun, during recovery and during exsanguination, were compared for differences in power content and frequency distribution using Fast Fourier Transform analysis. ECoG signals recorded during the quiescent phase post-stun had a markedly lower power content compared with pre-stun, whereas the EEG signal showed no such reduction in power content. During exsanguination, the mean rate of decline in the ECoG power content was 0·025 log units/s, three times faster than the mean rate of decline of the EEG at 0·008 log units/s. The duration of the electroplectic fit post-stun was detected equally well by the two techniques. The differences between EEG and ECoG traces in this study are thought to arise from differences in the signal-noise ratio of the two techniques and by artefacts in the EEG signal, caused by microscopic movement between EEG electrodes and the surrounding tissue. The slower rate of decline in the power content of the EEG during slaughter means that the time to onset of isoelectric cortical electrical activity will be longer if determined by EEG measurements than by ECoG recording.  相似文献

The time of onset of permanent insensibility, subsequent to incision of the major blood vessels of the neck, was studied in eight one-week-old calves. Insensibility was determined from the study of electroencephalograms (EEG). Apart from one animal in which insensibility first occurred within 34 s, the first indication of insensibility did not occur until between 65 and 85 s. All animals subsequently showed evidence of periodic resurgence of possible sensibility for up to 123 to 323s after slaughter. Such resurgences were seen to be preceded by a respiratory gasp. The EEG did not become isoelectric until between 132 and 336 s. Involuntary movements of the animal and the presence of corneal and palpebral reflexes persisted for up to 300 s after slaughter.

It is suggested that the marked increase in the time for insensibility to occur after slaughter in calves, compared with sheep and lambs, is due to a greater contribution of blood to the brain by the vertebral arteries in calves.  相似文献

To study the application of electroencephalography (EEG) for the assessment of insensibility during stunning and slaughter, recordings were made on sheep that were slaughtered by throat cutting, electrically stunned head-only and allowed to recover, electrically stunned head-only followed by throat cutting or electrically stunned head-to-back. The same experiments were repeated on calves (1–6 weeks old) except some calves were stunned and allowed to recover before final stunning and throat cutting.

After the throat cut, sheep became insensible (i.e. EEG < 10 μV) at 8–22 s but the calf EEG did not fall below 10 μV until 79 s after the cut. With head-only stunning/recovery, high-amplitude EEG waves (electroplectic fit) continued for 47 s (sheep) and 33 s (calves) post stun. A quiescent period followed, which then developed into a period of moderate-amplitude EEG signals, so that, at 50 s post stun, the EEG usually exceeded 50 μV and often had bursts of 150 μV activity. After head-only stunning/throat cutting, the electroplectic fit was shortened (39 s in sheep, 23 s in calves) and the EEG took at least 50 s to fall below 10 μV. With sheep stunned head-to-back, which stops the heart, and thus should cause immediate, permanent insensibility, the EEG took longer to fall below 10 μV (52 s) than after throat cutting. These results suggest that electrical stunning of sheep and calves causes a prolonged increase in the post-stun EEG amplitude. Therefore, during slaughter, stunned animals have larger amplitude EEG signals than unstunned animals, and EEG criteria developed for judging the sensibility of unstunned animals cannot be used for those that are electrically stunned.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters of calf health in organic US Holstein calves. Calves were born on farms across the United States from 2006 to 2019. Three calf health traits were evaluated in the study: calf respiratory disease until 365 d of age, calf scours until 60 d of age, and heifer stayability until 365 d of age. For respiratory disease and scours, animals were assigned a phenotype of 0 if they were healthy and a phenotype of 1 if they were diseased. For stayability, animals were assigned a phenotype of 0 if they were removed from the herd by 365 d of age and 1 if they remained in the herd at 365 d of age. Genetic parameters were estimated from threshold models that included the fixed effects of mean, year-season of birth, and dam age (respiratory disease and scours only) as well as the random effects of herd-year of birth and additive genetics. Heritability estimates were 0.100, 0.075, and 0.085 for respiratory disease, scours, and stayability, respectively. Solutions for estimated breeding values for respiratory disease and scours were transformed from disease risk to disease resistance by reversing the signs before calculating genetic correlations such that higher values of scours, respiratory disease, and stayability were favored. There was a moderate favorable genetic correlation estimate between respiratory disease resistance and stayability of 0.675. However, genetic correlation estimates between respiratory disease resistance and scours resistance (0.148) and between scours resistance and stayability (0.165) were low. Estimated breeding value correlations between calf health traits and other traits evaluated nationally were generally low in magnitude. The strongest correlation estimates were with longevity, particularly between stayability and heifer livability (0.217) and between stayability and cow livability (0.288); respiratory disease resistance was also favorably correlated with heifer (0.190) and cow (0.178) livability. Correlations with cow health traits were generally low and unfavorable. Linear models including the random effect of herd-by-sire indicated that herd-by-sire accounted for approximately 2% of phenotypic variance for scours and stayability, which may indicate a genotype by environment interaction effect for these traits. In conclusion, there is significant genetic variation in organic calf health, and there was evidence of genotype by environment interaction.  相似文献

Interest in housing dairy calves in groups is currently growing. Group housing using individual calf hutches, a resource already available in most dairy farms in North America, could provide a novel housing method that can be a simple way to implement group housing on farm. The main objective of this study was to determine whether pair housing dairy calves in hutches outdoors would result in similar weight gain and milk intake compared with individual housing in hutches. The study was designed to avoid competition for resources (including milk and solid feed, teat, bucket, outdoor space, and hutch) to test a setup that has the potential to maximize performance and calf growth. Secondary objectives were to document how calves in both treatments use their environment in terms of time spent and behaviors performed in each area, how paired calves interact, and the time they spend together. Single calves (n = 6/season) were housed in 1 hutch with an attached outdoor environment; paired calves (n = 6 pairs/season) were given twice the resources. Calves were fed up to 16 L/d of milk replacer. Daily milk intake and weekly weight gains were recorded. Behavioral observations were recorded live once per week for 5 (summer) or 4 (winter) nonconsecutive periods. Paired and single calves had similar weight gain (averaging from 1.1 to 1.3 kg/d across trials) and milk intake (averaging from 11.1 to 13.7 kg/d across trials), showing no difference in performance between treatments. Low occurrences of cross sucking (averaging from 0.1 to 0.4 bouts/h of observation per pen across trials) and displacements at the teat (0.8 to 1.4 bouts/h of observation per pen across trials) were found. All calves altered their behavior in some way to accommodate companions; paired calves were seen interacting and spending time together (i.e., lying in the same hutch), and in the summer trial single calves spent less time lying inside the hutch than paired calves, presumably to have visual access to other calves. The solution of mixed indoor and outdoor housing environments tested as part of this study showed that calves make use of all spaces provided to them in winter and in summer conditions while maintaining good performance. Housing calves in pairs using individual hutches can be a suitable alternative to housing calves individually in hutches outdoors.  相似文献

Previous work in calves indicated that ballooning of the severed arteries is a potential concern in animals receiving a reversible stun before slaughter, and in animals not stunned before slaughter, as it could extend the duration of brain function before the animals die. This study determined the prevalence of ballooning of the carotid arteries in a total of 987 cattle, calves and lambs at slaughter. The severed ends of the carotid arteries were examined by palpation. The prevalence of ballooning that was 3 cm or more in diameter, was 16%, 25% and 0% for cattle, calves and lambs, respectively. Artery sections were taken from a sample of large cattle and examined histologically. In ballooned arteries there was coagulated blood between the outer surface of the artery and the inner aspect of the connective tissue sheath surrounding the artery, suggesting the formation of a false aneurysm in the ballooning phenomenon.  相似文献

Adequate passive transfer of maternal immunoglobulin is important for optimal health and performance in newborn dairy calves. From June to October 2003 and January to April 2004, blood samples were collected from 961 dairy calves 0 to 8 d of age on 11 farms in southwestern Ontario. This was followed by a second study conducted from May to October 2004, in which similar samples were taken from 422 calves up to 8 d of age on 119 dairy farms throughout southern Ontario. For each sample collected, serum refractometry was used to evaluate serum total protein (TP) as a measure of passive transfer of maternal immunity. During each study, producers were asked to provide information on calf management practices, including details of colostrum feeding. Data were analyzed to assess the levels of maternal immunity present in the calves, and to investigate whether these were associated with any calf management or colostrum feeding practices used on the farms. Serum TP readings ranged from 3.5 to 9.8 g/dL. Controlling for any effects of variation between farms, we found no statistically significant difference in serum TP levels, or risk of failure of passive transfer (FPT), between heifer and bull calves. The odds of FPT in calves on farms where more than 75% of cows were usually allowed to remain with their calves for more than 3 h after calving were significantly higher than the odds of FPT in calves on farms where dams and calves were separated within 3 h of the birth. Furthermore, an increased volume of colostrum given to calves within 6 h of birth was significantly associated with a reduced risk of FPT in calves. Information from this work provides valuable insight into the efficiency of passive transfer in newborn dairy calves in southern Ontario.  相似文献

Male Holstein calves (n = 120) purchased from local dairy farms were fed one of three calf milk replacers for 42 d. Experimental milk replacers were formulated to contain whey protein concentrate (WPC) as the primary protein source or WPC plus 5% spray-dried bovine plasma (SDBP) or spray-dried porcine plasma (SDPP). The SDPP was heated to remove heat-insoluble materials and provide products with similar IgG content. Calves were also fed commercial calf starter and water for ad libitum consumption. Intake, change in body weight (BW), feed efficiency, morbidity and mortality were determined. Mortality was 10, 3, and 2 in calves fed WPC, SDBP, and SDPP treatments, respectively. Morbidity, measured as the number of days that calves had diarrhea was reduced by 30% when SDBP or SDPP were fed. Calves had diarrhea for 6.9, 3.9, and 4.7 d during the 42-d study when fed commercial calf milk replacer containing WPC, SDBP, and SDPP, respectively. Fecal scores tended to be reduced and feed efficiency tended to be improved when SDBP or SDPP were fed. Mean intakes of total dry matter during the 42-d study were greater when calves were fed SDBP or SDPP and were 661, 710, and 684 g/d for calves fed WPC, SDBP, and SDPP, respectively. Mean BW gains from d0 to 42 were 231,261, and 218 g/d, respectively. Calves fed SDPP tended to have lower BW gain during the first 28 d of the study. However, difference in daily BW gain from d 1 to 28 was only 39 g/d. Inclusion of SDBP or SDPP in milk replacer reduced morbidity and mortality of milk-fed dairy calves.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of feeding calf starter on rumen pH of dairy calves during weaning transition. Twenty Holstein bull calves were paired into 10 blocks by starting date of the study and body weight, and fed either milk replacer and hay (MR) or MR, hay, and a commercial texturized calf starter (MR+S) in a randomized complete block design. All calves were fed 750 g/d of milk replacer as the basal diet. Calves on MR+S treatment were also fed a calf starter ad libitum to maintain similar energy intake between calves within blocks, and MR calves were fed additional milk replacer that was equivalent to energy from calf starter intake. When MR+S calves consumed a calf starter at 680 g/d for 3 consecutive d, rumen pH of a MR+S calf and his MR counterpart was measured continuously for 3 d using a small ruminant rumen pH measurement system. Treatment did not affect minimum pH, mean pH, maximum pH, standard deviation of mean pH, and duration or area under pH 5.8, indicating that calf starter consumption did not appear to affect rumen pH. However, hay intake was negatively correlated to area under pH 5.8, with a breakpoint at 0.080 kg/d intake, suggesting hay intake might play an important role in mitigating ruminal acidosis in dairy calves during weaning transition.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate effects of calf transport age (14 vs. 28 d) and calf (e.g., sex and breed) and dam characteristics (e.g., parity and ease of birth) on health and performance of veal calves until slaughter age. Calves (n = 683) originated from 13 dairy farms in the Netherlands and were transported at either 14 or 28 d of age from the dairy farm to 8 Dutch veal farms. A health assessment of calves was performed on a weekly basis at the dairy farm and in wk 2, 10, 18, and 24 at the veal farm. Body weight of calves was measured on a weekly basis at the dairy farm and upon arrival at the veal farm. At the veal farm, use of antibiotics and other medicines during the rearing period (both at herd and individual level) was recorded and carcass weights were obtained from the slaughterhouse. Body weight upon arrival (Δ = 11.8 kg) and carcass weight at slaughter (Δ = 14.8 kg) were greater, and mortality risk (Δ = ?3.1%) and prevalence of animals treated with medicines other than antibiotics (e.g., antiinflammatories, multivitamins, and anticoccidial drugs; Δ = ?5.4%) were lower in calves transported at 28 d compared with calves transported at 14 d. Crossbreds other than Belgian Blue × Holstein Friesian received a higher number of individual treatments with antibiotics and other medicines (Δ = 14.8% and Δ = 15.1%, respectively) at the veal farm compared with Belgian Blue × Holstein Friesian calves. These findings suggest that calves transported at 28 d were more robust compared with calves transported at 14 d.  相似文献

A comparison of two milk replacer diets, using Ayrshire bull calves, was undertaken. Calves were offered either a diet based on skim milk, fat and whey (diet CM) or one (diet DMC 10) in which 20% skim milk was replaced by equal quantities of dried microbial cells (DMC) and whey. The inclusion of DMC resulted in a reduction in energy digestibility but had little effect on the digestibility of nitrogen. The metabolisable energy (ME) value for diet DMC 10 was significantly lower than that for diet CM. Calves offered diet DMC 10 consumed more feed and grew faster than calves on diet CM. The gross efficiency of conversion of nutrients for growth was unaffected by treatment and the composition of the liveweight gains was similar on both diets. The efficiencies of tissue accretion were higher for the calves given diet DMC 10, particularly in relation to the efficiency of use of nitrogen for tissue gain.  相似文献

Possible absorption of ingested prolactin into blood of milk-fed neonates was studied in two species by different experimental approaches. In calves, secretion of endogenous prolactin was suppressed by administration of ergocryptine. Prolactin was measured in blood plasma at 20-min intervals before and after ingestion by the calves of bovine milk or colostrum which contained prolactin. Prolactin in plasma during the 2-h period after feeding was the same as that during the 1-h period before feeding. therefore, these data failed to demonstrate any absorption of ingested prolactin into the blood of neonatal calves. Previous research showed that bovine prolactin could be transferred into rat milk by injecting it into lactating rats. Blood serum was collected from rat pups that were suckling dams previously injected with bovine prolactin. Several dosages and times of administration were used in the experimental design, and blood serum also was collected from rat pups nursing control dams. All samples were immunoassayed for bovine prolactin with reagents that crossreacted only slightly with endogenous rat prolactin. Injection of lactating dams with bovine prolactin did not increase the amount of immunoreactive bovine prolactin in the sera of suckling rat pups. These results agree with those from the calf study and indicate that ingested bovine prolactin was not absorbed intact into the blood of neonatal rats.  相似文献

The collection of calf birth weight on US dairies is not a common practice. Calf birth weight was collected on 3 dairies (2 Holstein herds and 1 Jersey herd) over a 6-wk period. All calf birth weights were collected less than 2 h after birth. A total of 872 calves were weighed by a spring scale and their weight was also estimated using a hoof circumference tape, with both weights and sex recorded. The general linear models procedure (PROC GLM; SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC) was used to estimate least squares means for spring scale birth weight along with sex of the calf and dairy. Calf spring scale versus hoof circumference-estimated birth weight was compared using the regression procedure (PROC REG; SAS Institute Inc.). Calf birth weight was also broken down into increments, and spring scale versus hoof circumference-estimated birth weight was compared by t-test. Bull calves had a heavier birth weight compared with heifer calves [36.7 ± 0.4 kg (n = 450) vs. 34.6 ± 0.4 kg (n = 422), respectively]. The dairy on which calves were born had a significant effect on calf birth weight [dairy 1: 36.8 ± 0.4 kg (n = 204); dairy 2: 39.5 ± 0.2 kg (n = 463); dairy 3: 25.9 ± 0.4 kg (n = 205)]. When the spring scale calf birth weight was linearly regressed by hoof circumference-estimated birth weight, a significant relationship was observed, with an R2 value of 0.91. For calves weighing less than 31.3 kg, the hoof circumference tape overestimated calf birth weight compared with the spring scale. However, for calves that weighed between 31.3 and 44.9 kg, no significant difference was observed between spring scale and hoof circumference tape-estimated birth weight. For calves weighing greater than 44.9 kg, the hoof circumference tape underestimated birth weight compared with the spring scale. Collection of calf BW by spring scale or estimated by hoof circumference tape appeared to be comparable for most calves because most calves weighed between 31 and 45 kg, but caution should be used for calves with a light or heavy birth weight.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate effects of transport age of calves (14 vs. 28 d), and of calf and dam characteristics, on immunoglobulin titers and hematological variables of veal calves. Calves (n = 683) were transported to a veal farm at 14 or 28 d of age. Natural antibodies N-IgG, N-IgM, and N-IgA against phosphorylcholine conjugated to bovine serum albumin (PC-BSA) were measured in serum of the dams 1 wk before calving and in first colostrum. These antibodies were also measured in serum of calves 1 wk after birth, 1 d before transport, and in wk 2 and 10 posttransport at the veal farm. Hematological variables were assessed in calves 1 d before transport and in wk 2 posttransport. One day before transport, titers of N-IgG, N-IgM, N-IgA, and neutrophil counts were higher, and lymphocyte counts were lower in 14-d-old calves compared with 28-d-old calves. In wk 2 at the veal farm, calves transported at 14 d of age had higher N-IgG titers and neutrophil counts, but lower N-IgM and N-IgA titers, and lymphocyte counts than calves transported at 28 d. In wk 1 and 1 d before transport, N-Ig in calves were positively related to N-Ig in colostrum. In wk 2 and 10 at the veal farm, N-IgG in calves was positively related to N-IgG in colostrum. The N-IgG titers in calves at the dairy farm were negatively related to the likelihood of being individually treated with antibiotics or other medicines at the veal farm. Our results suggest that calves transported to the veal farm at 28 d of age showed a more advanced development of their adaptive immunity than calves transported at 14 d of age. Quality of colostrum might have long-term consequences for N-IgG titers and immunity in veal calves.  相似文献
