Securing the Cloud—Governance,Risk, and Compliance Issues Reign Supreme

While acknowledging the many benefits that cloud computing solutions bring to the world, it is important to note that recent research and studies of these technologies have identified a myriad of potential governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) issues. While industry clearly acknowledges their existence and seeks to them as much as possible, timing-wise it is still well before the legal framework has been put in place to adequately protect and adequately respond to these new and differing global challenges.

This paper seeks to inform the potential cloud adopter, not only of the perceived great technological benefit, but to also bring to light the potential security, privacy, and related GRC issues which will need to be prioritized, managed, and mitigated before full implementation occurs.     

Scholarly Communication in the Sciences—A Third World Perspective

ABSTRACT

A study was undertaken to assess the impact of the Internet on scientific communication among a group of scientists and information professionals from leading research institutions in India. The object of the study was to understand the information-seeking behavior of Indian scientists and information professionals and the use of the Internet in their work. In order to determine subject specific differences in Internet use, participants included physicists, mathematicians, chemists, biomedical scientists, and information professionals. This article also examines the perceptions of scientists on recent developments in scholarly communication and explores the role of Indian librarians and information professionals in the electronic environment.     

Reconstructing the World’s Museums

Virtual exploration tools for large indoor environments (e.g. museums) have so far been limited to either blueprint-style 2D maps that lack photo-realistic views of scenes, or ground-level image-to-image transitions, which are immersive but ill-suited for navigation. On the other hand, photorealistic aerial maps would be a useful navigational guide for large indoor environments, but it is impossible to directly acquire photographs covering a large indoor environment from aerial viewpoints. This paper presents a 3D reconstruction and visualization system for automatically producing clean and well-regularized texture-mapped 3D models for large indoor scenes, from ground-level photographs and 3D laser points. The key component is a new algorithm called “inverse constructive solid geometry (CSG)” for reconstructing a scene with a CSG representation consisting of volumetric primitives, which imposes powerful regularization constraints. We also propose several novel techniques to adjust the 3D model to make it suitable for rendering the 3D maps from aerial viewpoints. The visualization system enables users to easily browse a large-scale indoor environment from a bird’s-eye view, locate specific room interiors, fly into a place of interest, view immersive ground-level panorama views, and zoom out again, all with seamless 3D transitions. We demonstrate our system on various museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City—one of the largest art galleries in the world.

An analysis of the business characteristics of adopters and non‐adopters of World Wide Web technology

The World Wide Web has received considerable media attention in recent times. Little is known concerning the technology’s appeal for commercial applications, and the topic deserves investigation. This study aims to analyze the differences between adopter and non‐adopter businesses according to their organizational characteristics. Six characteristics consistently associated with the adoption of technology, business size, age, industry, use of an IT support unit and IT budget, and degree of technology experience, are selected from the literature. A sample of 245 adopter businesses is gathered using on‐line directories and “keyword” searches of the World Wide Web. A sample of 245 non‐adopter businesses is obtained from the state business telephone directory. The study finds a number of interesting associations. No significant relationship is found between business size and World Wide Web adoption. Adopters tend to be younger yet more experienced with technology than non‐adopters. Businesses that made use of IT budgets and IT support units also tended to be adopters, however adoption did not rely on the existence of these two factors. The study raises a number of additional findings that are of interest but are not directly related to this work. These findings merit further research. On Factorizing the Symbolic U-resultant — Application of the ddet operator —

This paper presents a new, practical, efficient algorithm for factorizing the U-resultant of a system of algebraic equations with finitely many solutions. Given a matrix whose determinant is the U-resultant, our algorithm obtains the true linear factors with exact multiplicities, directly from the matrix without expanding the multivariate determinant. The main focuses are laid upon the use of a new operator, which enables us to treat only matrices of univariate polynomial elements, and also upon the exact treatment of multiplicities, which is made possible by the symbolic representation of solutions in simple algebraic extensions of Q. The algorithm is probabilistic in the sense that there exists no deterministic method to give an appropriate parameterization. The efficiency of our algorithm will be demonstrated with some empirical problems.     

Learning in the “Real World”

In this paper we define and characterize the process of developing a real-world Machine Learning application, with its difficulties and relevant issues, distinguishing it from the popular practice of exploiting ready-to-use data sets. To this aim, we analyze and summarize the lessons learned from applying Machine Learning techniques to a variety of problems. We believe that these lessons, though primarily based on our personal experience, can be generalized to a wider range of situations and are supported by the reported experiences of other researchers.     

The continuous measurement of the temperature of the upper layer of the sea—a practical approach

A new instrument for the continuous direct measurement of temperature in the upper layer of the sea (within the first millimetre) is described. The technique makes use of a miniature thermistor in a surface-floating hydrophobic support. A wide range of possible applications in fields such as oceanography and climatology exist, and the method also provides a promising alternative to the conventional ‘bottle and reversing thermometers’ or ‘bucket’ methods currently used to provide in situ data for comparison with remote-sensing measurements.
