ABSTRACT

The traditional text-based password has been the default security medium for years; however, the difficulty of memorizing secure strong passwords often leads to insecure practices. A possible alternative solution is graphical authentication, which is motivated by the fact that the capability of humans’ memory for images is superior to text, which helps to improve password usability and security. Recently, some implementations of graphical authentication techniques have been deployed in practice. This paper introduces a new hybrid graphical authentication, “GOTPass,” that authenticates by means of a one-time numerical code that needs to be typed in based on a sequence of secret images and a prechosen input format. An important focus for this paper was the security aspects of the graphical password scheme. This paper reports an in-depth analysis of the security evaluation and shows a high resistance capability of GOTPass against common graphical password attacks. Three attacks were simulated (Guessing, Intersection, and Shoulder-surfing), and the results showed that nearly 98% of the 690 attempts failed to compromise the system.  相似文献

Password-based authentication is frequently criticised on the basis of the ways in which the approach can be compromised by end-users. However, a fundamental point in the defence of many users is that they may not know any better, and lack appropriate guidance and support when choosing their passwords and subsequently attempting to manage them. Given that such support could reasonably be expected to come from the systems upon which the passwords are used, this paper presents an assessment of password practices on 10 popular websites, examining the extent to which they provide guidance for password selection, enforce restrictions on password choices, and support easy and effective recovery or reset if passwords are forgotten. The findings reveal that the situation is extremely variable, with none of the assessed sites performing ideally across all of the assessed criteria. Better efforts are consequently required if password practices amongst the general populous are expected to improve.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Graphical password composition is an important part of graphical user authentication which affects the strength of the chosen password. Considering that graphical authentication is associated with visual search, perception, and information retrieval, in this paper we report on an eye-tracking study (N = 109) that aimed to investigate the effects of users’ cognitive styles toward the strength of the created passwords and shed light into whether and how the visual strategy of the users during graphical password composition is associated with the passwords’ strength. For doing so, we adopted Witkin’s Field Dependence-Independence theory, which underpins individual differences in visual information and cognitive processing, as graphical password composition tasks are associated with visual search. The analysis revealed that users with different cognitive processing characteristics followed different patterns of visual behavior during password composition which affected the strength of the created passwords. The findings underpin the need of considering human-cognitive characteristics as a design factor in graphical password schemes. The paper concludes by discussing implications for improving recognition-based graphical passwords through adaptation and personalization techniques based on individual cognitive characteristics.

This study investigates the efficacy of using a restrictive password composition policy. The primary function of access controls is to restrict the use of information systems and other computer resources to authorised users only. Although more secure alternatives exist, password-based systems remain the predominant method of user authentication. Prior research shows that password security is often compromised by users who adopt inadequate password composition and management practices. One particularly under-researched area is whether restrictive password composition policies actually change user behaviours in significant ways. The results of this study show that a password composition policy reduces the similarity of passwords to dictionary words. However, in this case the regime did not reduce the use of meaningful information in passwords such as names and birth dates, nor did it reduce password recycling.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Complying with a security policy often requires users to create long and complex passwords to protect their accounts. However, remembering such passwords is difficult for many and may lead to insecure practices, such as choosing weak passwords or writing them down. In addition, they are vulnerable to various types of attacks, such as shoulder surfing, replay, and keylogger attacks (Gupta, Sahni, Sabbu, Varma, & Gangashetty, 2012) One-Time Passwords (OTPs) aim to overcome such problems (Gupta et al., 2012); however, most implemented OTP techniques require special hardware, which not only adds cost, but there are also issues regarding its availability (Brostoff, Inglesant, & Sasse, 2010). In contrast, the use of graphical passwords is an alternative authentication mechanism designed to aid memorability and ease of use, often forming part of a multifactor authentication process. This article is complementary to the earlier work that introduced and evaluated the security of the new hybrid user-authentication approach: Graphical One-Time Password (GOTPass) (Alsaiari et al., 2015). The scheme aims to combine the usability of recognition-based and draw-based graphical passwords with the security of OTP. The article presents the results of an empirical user study that investigates the usability features of the proposed approach, as well as pretest and posttest questionnaires. The experiment was conducted during three separate sessions, which took place over five weeks, to measure the efficiency, effectiveness, memorability, and user satisfaction of the new scheme. The results showed that users were able to easily create and enter their credentials as well as remember them over time. Participants carried out a total of 1,302 login attempts with a 93% success rate and an average login time of 24.5 s.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Many systems rely on password composition rules to force users to choose more secure passwords. The findings discussed here are from a study on the enforcement of good password practice in the form of password composition rules. The results show that the enforcement of password composition rules does not discourage users from using meaningful information in passwords. While composition rules reduce password reuse, the overall incidence remains high. Passwords created under these conditions are also perceived to be more difficult to remember. Nevertheless, the enforcement of password composition rules does significantly improve protection against dictionary-based attack.  相似文献

Password reuse – using the same password for multiple accounts – is a prevalent phenomenon that can make even the most secure systems vulnerable. When passwords are reused across multiple systems, hackers may compromise accounts by stealing passwords from low-security sites to access sites with higher security. Password reuse can be particularly threatening to users in developing countries in which cybersecurity training is limited, law enforcement of cybersecurity is non-existent, or in which programs to secure cyberspace are limited. This article proposes a two-pronged solution for reducing password reuse through detection and mitigation. First, based on the theories of routine, cognitive load and motor movement, we hypothesize that password reuse can be detected by monitoring characteristics of users' typing behavior (i.e. keystroke dynamics). Second, based on protection motivation theory, we hypothesize that providing just-in-time fear appeals when a violation is detected will decrease password reuse. We tested our hypotheses in an experiment and found that users' keystroke dynamics are diagnostic of password reuse. By analyzing changes in typing patterns, we were able to detect password reuse with 81.71% accuracy. We also found that just-in-time fear appeals decrease password reuse; 88.41% of users who received a fear appeal subsequently created unique passwords, whereas only 4.45% of users who did not receive a fear appeal created unique passwords. Our results suggest that future research should continue to examine keystroke dynamics as an indicator of cybersecurity behaviors and use just-in-time fear appeals as a method for reducing non-secure behavior. The findings of our research provide a practical and cost-effective solution to bolster cybersecurity through discouraging password reuse.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Authentication using images (i.e., graphical passwords) is claimed to be one of the alternatives for overcoming weaknesses in the traditional username and password authentication. This paper reports on the study to explore the feasibility of combining two graphical password methods for better security. A graphical password prototype scheme, the Enhanced Graphical Authentication System (EGAS), was developed (which combines the methods of clicking on the image (i.e., click-based) and selecting a series of images (i.e., choice-based). The EGAS was tested by 30 participants randomly chosen from the authors’ university and two evaluations were made; namely user performance of the combined method and the feasibility of authentication strategies toward the introduced method itself. From both evaluations, it is found that positive results have been obtained, which suggest that these methods could be combined together effectively without giving impediment to users.  相似文献

Security issues in text-based password authentication are rarely caused by technical issues, but rather by the limitations of human memory, and human perceptions together with their consequential responses. This study introduces a new user-friendly guideline approach to password creation, including persuasive messages that motivate and influence users to select more secure and memorable text passwords without overburdening their memory. From a broad understanding of human factors-caused security problems, we offer a reliable solution by encouraging users to create their own formula to compose passwords. A study has been conducted to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed password guidelines. Its results suggest that the password creation methods and persuasive message provided to users convinced them to create cryptographically strong and memorable passwords. Participants were divided into two groups in the study. The participants in the experimental group who were given several password creation methods along with a persuasive message created more secure and memorable passwords than the participants in the control group who were asked to comply with the usual strict password creation rules. The study also suggests that our password creation methods are much more efficient than strict password policy rules. The security and usability evaluation of the proposed password guideline showed that simple improvements such as adding persuasive text to the usual password guidelines consisting of several password restriction rules make significant changes to the strength and memorability of passwords. The proposed password guidelines are a low-cost solution to the problem of improving the security and usability of text-based passwords.

User authentication such as password setting has become increasingly important for the secure management of the information stored in mobile devices. However, in the password authentication schemes used in mobile devices, enhancing security reduces their usability, and passwords become hard to memorize. In addition, enhancing their usability makes them vulnerable to shoulder-surfing or recording attacks involving stealing a glance at the authentication process through the system interface. In this paper, we propose a password authentication scheme that uses a virtual scroll wheel, called WheelLock, to ensure appropriate usability and prevent brute force, shoulder-surfing, and recording attacks.  相似文献

Password guessers are instrumental for assessing the strength of passwords. Despite their diversity and abundance, comparisons between password guessers are limited to simple success rates. Thus, little is known on how password guessers can best be combined with or complement each other. To extend analyses beyond success rates, we devise an analytical framework to compare the types of passwords that guessers generate. Using our framework, we show that different guessers often produce dissimilar passwords, even when trained on the same data. We leverage this result to show that combinations of computationally cheap guessers are as effective in guessing passwords as computationally intensive guessers, but more efficient. Our framework can be used to identify combinations of guessers that will best complement each other. To improve the success rate of any guesser, we also show how an effective training dataset can be identified for a given target password dataset, even when the target dataset is hashed. Our insights allow us to provide a concrete set of practical recommendations for password checking to effectively and efficiently measure password strength.

Security policies are required that protect information from unauthorised access, and also respect challenges users face in creating, and particularly managing, increasing numbers of passwords. This paper investigates real password use in the context of daily life. It presents the results of an empirical study where participants completed a password diary over 7 days, followed by debrief interviews to gain further knowledge and understanding of user behaviour. The results reported relate to how many passwords are in use, the types of passwords participants created, the relationships between different passwords and to sensitive services, how participants retrieved their passwords and finally, the different strategies adopted by users in their management of passwords. The paper concludes by providing a high level set of password guidelines, along with suggestions for mechanisms to support creating, encoding, retrieving and executing multiple passwords.  相似文献

Modern organizations rely on passwords for preventing illicit access to valuable data and resources. A well designed password policy helps users create and manage more effective passwords. This paper offers a novel model and tool for understanding, creating, and testing password policies. We present a password policy simulation model which incorporates such factors as simulated users, accounts, and services. This model and its implementation enable administrators responsible for creating and managing password policies to test them before giving them to actual users. It also allows researchers to test how different password policy factors impact security, without the time and expense of actual human studies. We begin by presenting our password policy simulation model. We next discuss prior work and validate the model by showing how it is consistent with previous research conducted on human users. We then present and discuss experimental results derived using the model.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

There are many secure authentication schemes that are secure but difficult to use. Most existing network applications authenticate users with a username and password pair. Such systems using the reusable passwords are susceptible to attacks based on the theft of password. Each scheme has its merits and drawbacks (Misbahuddin, Aijaz Ahmed, & Shastri, 2006 Misbahuddin, M., Aijaz Ahmed, M. and Shastri, M. H. 2006. A simple and efficient solution to remote user authentication using smart cards. Proceedings of IEEE Conference on Innovations in Information Technology, : 15.  [Google Scholar]). To overcome the susceptibility in the existing applications, there is an authentication mechanism known as Two-Factor Authentication. Two-Factor Authentication is a process used to authenticate or verify the identity of a person or other entity requesting access under security constraints. It is a system wherein two different factors are used in conjunction to authenticate. Using two factors as opposed to one factor generally delivers a higher level of authentication assurance. The proposed scheme allows users to freely choose their PassFile (file password) instead of remembering the password, eliminating the problem of entering the reusable password and remembering the password. In this scheme, we proposed an efficient scheme for remote user authentication. It does not maintain verifier table and allows the user to freely choose and change their passwords. The proposed scheme provides best usability for the user in terms of PassFile without changing the existing protocol. This approach uses a smart card and is secure against identity theft, guessing attack, insider attack, stolen verifier attack, replay attack, impersonation attack, and reflection attack. The proposed achieves the mutual authentication essential for many applications.  相似文献

Information security has been a critical issue in the field of information systems. One of the key factors in the security of a computer system is how to identify the authorization of users. Password-based user authentication is widely used to authenticate a legitimate user in the current system. In conventional password-based user authentication schemes, a system has to maintain a password table or verification table which stores the information of users IDs and passwords. Although the one-way hash functions and encryption algorithms are applied to prevent the passwords from being disclosed, the password table or verification table is still vulnerable. In order to solve this problem, in this paper, we apply the technique of back-propagation network instead of the functions of the password table and verification table. Our proposed scheme is useful in solving the security problems that occurred in systems using the password table and verification table. Furthermore, our scheme also allows each user to select a username and password of his/her choice.  相似文献

Password authentication is vulnerable to dictionary attacks.Password strength measurement helps users to choose hard-to-guess passwords and enhance the security of systems based on password authentication.Although there are many password strength metrics and tools, none of them produces an objective measurement with inconsistent policies and different dictionaries. In this work,we analyzed the password policies and checkers of top 100 popular websites that are selected from Alexa rankings. The checkers are inconsistent and thus they may label the same password as different strength labels, because each checker is sensitive to its configuration,e.g.,the algorithm used and the training data.Attackers are empowered to exploit the above vulnerabilities to crack the protected systems more easily. As such, single metrics or local training data are not enough to build a robust and secure password checker.Based on these observations,we proposed Hybritus that integrates different websites'strategies and views into a global and robust model of the attackers with multiple layer perceptron(MLP)neural networks. Our data set is comprised of more than 3.3 million passwords taken from the leaked, transformed and randomly generated dictionaries. The data set were sent to 10 website checkers to get the feedbacks on the strength of passwords labeled as strong, medium and weak. Then we used the features of passwords generated by term frequency-inverse document frequency to train and test Hybritus. The experimental results show that the accuracy of passwords strength checking can be as high as 97.7%and over 94%even if it was trained with only ten thousand passwords.User study shows that Hybritus is usable as well as secure.  相似文献
