The jump phenomena

Model accuracy is the foundation for the transient behavior analysis of any power system. For a three-phase shell transformer, the most important part of the modeling is the nonlinear inductor of the core and the coupling between the inner two phases. According to the field data, a mathematical model for a three-phase shell transformer was created, and it was combined into distribution feeder model for system transient analysis. This model was tested, and the results were verified against those of [8]. The model response to the singlephase switching operation confirms that a three-phase shell transformer can be driven into saturation with a cable capacitance in series with it. According to the simulation, the overvoltage condition experienced by the local utility is due to the ferroresonance initiated by the single-phase switching operation on Phase C at the riser pole connected with the threephase shell transformer by a 182-ft long underground cable. The switching and system configuration have driven the transformer into saturation region and set a stage for ferroresonance. Models presented in this article can be useful in analyzing the occurrence of ferroresonance in other systems without disturbing them from their current state of operation. This can help utilities, facilities, and distribution companies to take preventive action.
