This study presents an original control algorithm for a hybrid energy system with a renewable energy source, namely, a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and a photovoltaic (PV) array. A single storage device, i.e., a supercapacitor (ultracapacitor) module, is in the proposed structure. The main weak point of fuel cells (FCs) is slow dynamics because the power slope is limited to prevent fuel starvation problems, improve performance and increase lifetime. The very fast power response and high specific power of a supercapacitor complements the slower power output of the main source to produce the compatibility and performance characteristics needed in a load. The energy in the system is balanced by d.c.-bus energy regulation (or indirect voltage regulation). A supercapacitor module functions by supplying energy to regulate the d.c.-bus energy. The fuel cell, as a slow dynamic source in this system, supplies energy to the supercapacitor module in order to keep it charged. The photovoltaic array assists the fuel cell during daytime. To verify the proposed principle, a hardware system is realized with analog circuits for the fuel cell, solar cell and supercapacitor current control loops, and with numerical calculation (dSPACE) for the energy control loops. Experimental results with small-scale devices, namely, a PEMFC (1200 W, 46 A) manufactured by the Ballard Power System Company, a photovoltaic array (800 W, 31 A) manufactured by the Ekarat Solar Company and a supercapacitor module (100 F, 32 V) manufactured by the Maxwell Technologies Company, illustrate the excellent energy-management scheme during load cycles.  相似文献

This paper reports on medium term tests of anode-supported five-cell short stacks, as well as on some separate anode development. Two stacks were operated under steady-state conditions: one with unprotected metal interconnects, H2 fuel and 0.35 A cm−2 (40% fuel utilisation) polarisation current showed an average cell voltage degradation of 56 mV per 1000 h for 2750 h; one with coated metal interconnects, synthetic reformate fuel and 0.5 A cm−2 (60% fuel utilisation) polarisation current showed an averaged cell voltage degradation slope of 6.6 mV per 1000 h for 800 h before a power cut prematurely interrupted the test. A third stack was subjected to 13 complete thermal cycles over 1000 h, average cell voltage degradation was evaluated to −2 mV per cycle for operation at 0.3 A cm−2, open circuit voltage (OCV) remained stable, whereas area specific resistance (ASR) increase amounted on average to 0.008 Ω cm2 per cycle.  相似文献

This paper proposes a perfect energy source supplied by a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) as a main power source and storage devices: battery and supercapacitor, for modern distributed generation system, particularly for future fuel cell vehicle applications. The energy in hybrid system is balanced by the dc bus voltage regulation. A supercapacitor module, as a high dynamic and high power density device, functions for supplying energy to regulate a dc bus voltage. A battery module, as a high energy density device, operates for supplying energy to a supercapacitor bank to keep it charged. A FC, as a slowest dynamic source in this system, functions to supply energy to a battery bank in order to keep it charged. Therefore, there are three voltage control loops: dc bus voltage regulated by a supercapacitor bank, supercapacitor voltage regulated by a battery bank, and battery voltage regulated by a FC. To authenticate the proposed control algorithm, a hardware system in our laboratory is realized by analog circuits and numerical calculation by dSPACE. Experimental results with small-scale devices (a PEMFC: 500-W, 50-A; a battery bank: 68-Ah, 24-V; and a supercapacitor bank: 292-F, 30-V, 500-A) corroborate the excellent control principle during motor drive cycle.  相似文献

A photo-rechargeable supercapacitor (photo-supercapacitor, or PSC) is studied using a N3-dye adsorbed TiO2 photoelectrode and PProDOT-Et2 poly(3,3-diethyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-thieno-[3,4-b][1,4]dioxepine) polymer films as supercapacitor materials for electron storage. The PSC device, comprising a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) and a supercapacitor (SC), can store the photo-to-electric energy. The PProDOT-Et2 films are potentiostatically electropolymerized to form thick films (ca. 0.5 mm) with a specific capacitance of ca. 6.5 F cm−2. A symmetrical (p/p) supercapacitor, with PProDOT-Et2 coated on both electrodes, is also characterized before fabricating the three-electrode PSC. The PSC is tested under light illumination of 100 mW cm−2, and attaining a photocharged voltage of 0.75 V and a discharged energy density of 21.3 μWh cm−2.  相似文献

This report details development of an air-breathing direct methanol alkaline fuel cell with an anion-exchange membrane. The commercially available anion-exchange membrane used in the fuel cell was first electrochemically characterized by measuring its ionic conductivity, and showed a promising result of 1.0 × 10−1 S cm−1 in a 5 M KOH solution. A laboratory-scale direct methanol fuel cell using the alkaline membrane was then assembled to demonstrate the feasibility of the system. A high open-circuit voltage of 700 mV was obtained for the air-breathing alkaline membrane direct methanol fuel cell (AMDMFC), a result about 100 mV higher than that obtained for the air-breathing DMFC using a proton exchange membrane. Polarization measurement revealed that the power densities for the AMDMFC are strongly dependent on the methanol concentration and reach a maximum value of 12.8 mW cm−2 at 0.3 V with a 7 M methanol concentration. A durability test for the air-breathing AMDMFC was performed in chronoamperometry mode (0.3 V), and the decay rate was approximately 0.056 mA cm−2 h−1 over 160 h of operation. The cell area resistance for the air-breathing AMDMFC was around 1.3 Ω cm2 in the open-circuit voltage (OCV) mode and then is stably supported around 0.8 Ω cm2 in constant voltage (0.3 V) mode.  相似文献

For the clarification of water transport mechanisms in operating fuel cells, synchrotron radiation computed tomography (SR-CT) was applied. A novel fuel cell has been designed that exposes the entire active area (7 mm2) to the SR beam while at the same time allowing for full fuel cell operation during the imaging experiment. This micro fuel cell has been qualified successfully prior to the SR imaging experiments. The cell voltage was 600 mV at 0.2 A cm−2 (open circuit voltage, OCV > 950 mV) and the operation was stable for hours. However, under SR beam exposition for in situ imaging, severe cell performance degradation within minutes has been reproducibly observed. Even after the SR beam had been switched-off cell operation remained irreversibly degraded whilst OCV could be recovered. Preliminary results indicate a higher degradation sensitivity of the cathode side of the cell. Apparently, the unique setup of the experiment which exposes an operating fuel cell with the entire active area to the SR beam reveals otherwise unnoticeable degradation mechanisms. It may have to be concluded that the very same materials degrade heavily during beam exposure that are subject of the imaging investigation. Consequently, the applicability of SR imaging to study water transport in porous fuel cell materials has to be revisited critically. This publication describes the observations made during fuel cell operation under SR beam exposure and discuss potential mechanisms that may cause beam-induced performance degradation.  相似文献

Co based catalyst were evaluated for oxygen reduction (ORR) in liquid KOH and alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AAEMFCs). In liquid KOH solution the catalyst exhibited good performance with an onset potential 120 mV more negative than platinum and a Tafel slope of ca. 120 mV dec−1. The hydrogen peroxide generated, increased from 5 to 50% as the electrode potential decreased from 175 to −300 mV vs. SHE.In an AAEMFC environment, one catalyst (GP2) showed promising performance for ORR, i.e. at 50 mA cm−2 the differences in cell potential between the stable performance for platinum (more positive) and cobalt cathodes with air and oxygen, were only 45 and 67 mV respectively. The second catalyst (GP4) achieved the same stable power density as with platinum, of 200 and 145 mW cm−2, with air at 1 bar (gauge) pressure and air (atm) cathode feed (60 °C), respectively. However the efficiency was lower (i.e. cell voltage was lower) i.e. 40% in comparison to platinum 47.5%.  相似文献

The segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cell comprising fuel channel, anode, cathode and electrolyte layers has been evaluated by developing a two-dimensional model, in which the equations have been solved numerically through finite element methods. The results indicate that the voltage of each membrane electrode assembly (MEA) exhibits a parabola-like curve and is higher than the appointed voltage of unit cell (0.7 V). From fuel inlet to outlet, the voltage of each MEA deceases due to the decreasing local H2 concentration. When both the interconnector and electrolyte gap lengths are fixed, the cell module with 5 mm long anode gives the maximal power density for the SS-SOFC. Higher power densities can be achieved through increasing the cathode thickness.  相似文献

This paper presents the utilization of a supercapacitor (SC) as an auxiliary power source in an electric vehicle (EV), composed of a proton electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) as the main energy source. The main weak point of PEMFC is slow dynamics because one must limit the fuel cell current slope in order to prevent fuel starvation problems, to improve its performance and lifetime. The very fast power response and high specific power of a supercapacitor can complement the slower power output of the main source to produce the compatibility and performance characteristics needed in a propulsion system. DC-DC converters connected to the hybrid source ensure a constant voltage value in inverters inputs. After an architecture presentation of the hybrid energy source, two parallel-type configurations are explored in more detail. For each of them, the energy flow control and management, validated simulation shows the performance obtained in this configuration. The hybrid source management is based primarily on the intervention of the supercapacitor in fugitives' schemes such as slopes, different speeds and rapid acceleration. Secondly, the PEMFC intervenes to guarantee the power in permanent regime. Finally, simulation results considering energy management are presented and illustrated the hybrid energy source benefits.  相似文献

Effects of reverse voltage and frozen fuel cell startup on the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) were investigated for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). A single cell was started from a subzero temperature by applying reverse voltage. The voltages applied to the cell were 0.8 and 1.2 V. The fuel cell performance was measured with a polarization curve and by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS), linear scan voltammetry (LSV) after each experiment. From the results, it was concluded that the catalyst activity, electrochemical active surface area (ECA) and the membrane were not damaged by the reverse voltage if the voltage was below 0.85 V. In contrast, a reverse voltage improved cell performance slightly. If the reverse voltage was larger than 0.85 V, the cell performance degraded. Another single cell with an active area of 128 cm2 was started up at −15 °C by applying reverse voltage. The cell performance and MEA physical characteristic were tested before and after the freeze startup. From the results, the cell performance decayed MEA delamination was observed and the pore size distribution of the MEA changed.  相似文献

This study presents the development of a novel inverse dynamic analysis-maximum power point tracking (IDA-MPPT) scheme in a hybrid energy harvesting system between thermoelectric module (TEM) and solar array (SA). The proposed method initially changes the harvested voltage response from both sources to be the third-order exponential function. This input function selection is based on the capability of this function to stabilize the initial response system and maintain its final position despite a prolonged response time. The mV voltage value from TEM is easily boosted up to nearly 5 V using this method. With this hybridization, the total obtained voltage is doubled to become 9.7 V, which results in a total power of 0.722 W. Furthermore, the method also allows for a fast tracking system, which enables faster voltage boosting and supercapacitor charging. The supercapacitor only requires less than 5 min to complete charging and boost the voltage to almost 5 V. Thus, a satisfactory value is obtained as compared with that of the TEM system with a chosen MPPC board.  相似文献

This study focuses on the use of the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) hybrid system, which consists of a generator, a supercapacitor, and a battery, to obtain regenerative energy. The fuel cell is a Nexa™ Power Module of Ballard Power Systems Inc., and the battery is a Ni-MH battery of Global Battery Co., Ltd. The supercapacitor, which features an excellent power density and capacity of 30 V and 100F, can minimize its power consumption via a cell balancing circuit. This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of regenerative energy and suggest solutions to increase regenerative energy using a vehicle simulation.  相似文献

A novel, highly integrated tubular SOFC system intended for small-scale power is characterized through a series of sensitivity analyses and parametric studies using a previously developed high-fidelity simulation tool. The high-fidelity tubular SOFC system modeling tool is utilized to simulate system-wide performance and capture the thermofluidic coupling between system components. Stack performance prediction is based on 66 anode-supported tubular cells individually evaluated with a 1-D electrochemical cell model coupled to a 3-D computational fluid dynamics model of the cell surroundings. Radiation is the dominate stack cooling mechanism accounting for 66-92% of total heat loss at the outer surface of all cells at baseline conditions. An average temperature difference of nearly 125 °C provides a large driving force for radiation heat transfer from the stack to the cylindrical enclosure surrounding the tube bundle. Consequently, cell power and voltage disparities within the stack are largely a function of the radiation view factor from an individual tube to the surrounding stack can wall. The cells which are connected in electrical series, vary in power from 7.6 to 10.8 W (with a standard deviation, σ = 1.2 W) and cell voltage varies from 0.52 to 0.73 V (with σ = 81 mV) at the simulation baseline conditions. It is observed that high cell voltage and power outputs directly correspond to tubular cells with the smallest radiation view factor to the enclosure wall, and vice versa for tubes exhibiting low performance. Results also reveal effective control variables and operating strategies along with an improved understanding of the effect that design modifications have on system performance. By decreasing the air flowrate into the system by 10%, the stack can wall temperature increases by about 6% which increases the minimum cell voltage to 0.62 V and reduces deviations in cell power and voltage by 31%. A low baseline fuel utilization is increased by decreasing the fuel flowrate and by increasing the stack current demand. Simulation results reveal fuel flow as a poor control variable because excessive tail-gas combustor temperatures limit fuel flow to below 110% of the baseline flowrate. Additionally, system efficiency becomes inversely proportional to fuel utilization over the practical fuel flow range. Stack current is found to be an effective control variable in this type of system because system efficiency becomes directly proportional to fuel utilization. Further, the integrated system acts to dampen temperature spikes when fuel utilization is altered by varying current demand. Radiation remains the dominate heat transfer mechanism within the stack even if stack surfaces are polished lowering emissivities to 0.2. Furthermore, the sensitivity studies point to an optimal system insulation thickness that balances the overall system volume and total conductive heat loss.  相似文献

Photo-biologically produced hydrogen by Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is integrated with a proton exchange (PEM) fuel cell for online electricity generation. To investigate the fuel cell efficiency, the effect of hydrogen production on the open circuit fuel cell voltage is monitored during 27 days of batch culture. Values of volumetric hydrogen production, monitored by the help of the calibrated water columns, are related with the open circuit voltage changes of the fuel cell. From the analysis of this relation a dead end configuration is selected to use the fuel cell in its best potential. After the open circuit experiments external loads are tested for their effects on the fuel cell voltage and current generation. According to the results two external loads are selected for the direct usage of the fuel cell incorporating with the photobioreactors (PBR). Experiments with the PEM fuel cell generate a current density of 1.81 mA cm−2 for about 50 h with 10 Ω load and 0.23 mA cm−2 for about 80 h with 100 Ω load.  相似文献

In this work, we reported an asymmetric supercapacitor in which active carbon (AC) was used as a positive electrode and carbon-coated LiTi2(PO4)3 as a negative electrode in 1 M Li2SO4 aqueous electrolyte. The LiTi2(PO4)3/AC hybrid supercapacitor showed a sloping voltage profile from 0.3 to 1.5 V, at an average voltage near 0.9 V, and delivered a capacity of 30 mAh g−1 and an energy density of 27 Wh kg−1 based on the total weight of the active electrode materials. It exhibited a desirable profile and maintained over 85% of its initial energy density after 1000 cycles. The hybrid supercapacitor also exhibited an excellent rate capability, even at a power density of 1000 W kg−1, it had a specific energy 15 Wh kg−1 compared with 24 Wh kg−1 at the power density about 200 W kg−1.  相似文献

Even though the measured open-circuit voltage in a H2-O2 PEM fuel cell is invariably about 200-250 mV lower than that predicted from thermodynamics (1.229 V at 25 °C), there is no unequivocal explanation of this phenomenon available in the literature, although several hypotheses exist. Based on a theoretical model of mixed potential with a priori parameters, it is shown here that this voltage loss under open-circuit conditions can be attributed exclusively to hydrogen crossover and the resulting oxygen reduction reaction overpotential at the cathode. The analytical model predictions agree well with available experimental results.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental assessment of fuel cell hybrid propulsion systems for scooters based on a modular 1.2 kW PEM fuel cell. The tests of the hybrid system are carried out using a programmable electronic load. Different configurations of the fuel cell/battery and the fuel cell/supercapacitor hybrid systems are explored. Both systems demonstrate their ability to deliver the requested load satisfactorily. The distributions of the fuel cell power delivery, although different between the two systems, are within the region where the fuel cell efficiency is approximately constant. As a result, the rates of fuel consumption show no discernable difference between the two systems for all three driving cycles considered. In addition to the fuel consumption, considerations including bus voltage, cost and packaging issues suggest that the supercapacitor has advantages over the battery for the use as secondary energy storage in fuel cell hybrid propulsion system for scooters.  相似文献

A single alkaline direct ethanol fuel cell (alkaline DEFC) with an anion-exchange membrane and non-platinum (non-Pt) catalysts is designed, fabricated, and tested. Particular attention is paid to investigating the effects of different operating parameters, including the cell operating temperature, concentrations of both ethanol and the added electrolyte (KOH) solution, as well as the mass flow rates of the reactants. The alkaline DEFC yields a maximum power density of 60 mW cm−2, a limiting current density of about 550 mA cm−2, and an open-circuit voltage of about 900 mV at 40 °C. The experimental results show that the cell performance is improved on increasing the operating temperature, but there exists an optimum ethanol concentration under which the fuel cell has the best performance. In addition, cell performance increases monotonically with increasing KOH concentration in the region of low current density, while in the region of high current density, there exists an optimum KOH concentration in terms of cell performance. The effect of flow rate of the fuel solution is negligible when the ethanol concentration is higher than 1.0 M, although the cell performance improves on increasing the oxygen flow rate.  相似文献

The nano-sized columned β-FeOOH was prepared by the hydrolysis process and its electrochemical capacitance performance was evaluated for the first time in Li2SO4 solution. A hybrid supercapacitor based on MnO2 positive electrode and FeOOH negative electrode in Li2SO4 electrolyte solution was designed. The electrochemical tests demonstrated that the hybrid supercapacitor has a energy density of 12 Wh kg−1 and a power density of 3700 W kg−1 based on the total weight of the electrode active materials with a voltage range 0–1.85 V. This hybrid supercapacitor also exhibits a good cycling performance and keeps 85% of initial capacity over 2000 cycles.  相似文献

Electrochemical power sources that offer high energy and power densities and, can also withstand a harsh temperature range have become extremely desirable in applications ranging from civilian portable electronic devices to military weapons. In this report, we demonstrated a wide temperature withstanding supercapacitor which can be operated from 100 °C to −40 °C within a voltage window from −2 V to 2 V. The performance of the supercapacitor coin cells, assembled with nanostructured activated carbon fabric (ACF) as the electrode material and 1 M tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TEABF4) in polypropylene carbonate (PC) solution as the electrolyte, was systematically studied within the set temperature window. The ACF supercapacitor yielded ideal rectangular shapes in cyclic voltammograms within 0-100 °C with an average mass capacitance of 90 F g−1 and, 60 F g−1 at −25 °C. The capacitance was still over 20 F g−1 at the extremely low temperature of −40 °C. Another exciting feature of the ACF supercapacitors was that they resumed their room temperature capacitance when cooled from 100 °C and defrosted from −40 °C, demonstrating an excellent repeatability and stability. The charge-discharge behavior of the ACF supercapacitors showed long-cycle stability at extreme temperatures. These high electrochemical performances make this type of supercapacitors very promising in many practical applications.  相似文献
