Information processing is essential in manufacturing, where products are produced based on available information from various sources. A number of techniques and methodologies have been developed and utilised to achieve efficient exchange of information, such as the adoption of turnkey systems, neutral standards, e.g. PDES, STEP (ISO-10303). In recent years, the Internet has become the worldwide information platform for the sharing of all kinds of information, and Intranet, which is based on Internet technology but is used within an organisation, has become a preferred platform for data sharing. This change provides a new role of Intranet/Internet technology for manufacturing, particularly for those companies struggling to gain a competitive edge in the global manufacturing area. This paper describes how an Intranet can be established within an organisation, and analyses the future role of this new technology in the manufacturing community.  相似文献

A PDES/STEP-based information model for computer-aided process planning   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
Computer Aided Process Planning (CAPP) constitutes one of the most essential elements in Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). Although many CAPP systems have been reported in literature during the last two decades, few of them are compatible enough to integrate easily with other systems in the CIM environment. One major reason is the lack of an effective method to represent the information required by CAPP, and to unify such information with the information of other systems in the CIM environment. Indeed, this problem has received relatively inadequate attention in the recent research of CAPP systems. In this paper, an information model for CAPP is developed by using the object-oriented modeling and the Product Data Exchange Step/STandard of Exchange Product data (PDES/STEP) techniques. The model consists of the part information model, the process plan information model, and the production resource information model. The EXPRESS language or the EXPRESS-G diagram is used to represent these models. Indeed, the proposed information model will greatly improve the CAPP system's capability of effective integration with other systems in the CIM environment, and, ultimately, to facilitate the implementation of the whole CIM strategy in manufacturing enterprises.  相似文献

We describe a test system in which we used a data management system and delta files to communicate engineering changes between two modeling systems: an ACIS-based solid modeling system running on a Sun Sparc workstation to create a part, and a CATIA system running on an IBM RS/6000 to design a fixture for it. The test system communicates the first version of the MBB part between the two engineers as a PDES/STEP (Product Data Exchange Standard/Standard for the Exchange of Product-Model Data) exchange file. The ACIS engineer then makes an engineering change to the part, thus creating, the second version (V2) of it, and a delta file communicates the V2 changes to the CATIA engineer. The CATIA engineer can use this delta file to highlight the changes to the part between the two versions. Although our test system/scenario is simple, it demonstrates the advantages of delta files. It also helped us identify several important issues for developing the method further. We first outline the STEP standard and how we used it to implement data exchange in our test system, then we discuss delta files and describe how we implemented them. We conclude with a discussion of the lessons learned from the test system and scenario  相似文献

Research efforts in two separate areas, intelligent user interfaces and product data models have in the past been carried out almost totally independently from each other. It would, however, seem that product models could be integrated into Intelligent Front-Ends and that results from Intelligent Front-End research could be used for building the user interfaces to database information stored according to product model schemas.The paper starts with an introduction to data base theory and then moves on to present general features of product models. The presentation is on a general level but the examples are picked from the building domain. The international effort to define a standardized basic product model framework, the PDES/STEP project, and the data modeling methods used in it are also described. Work with prototype interfaces to product data models for the building domain is described as an example of the role Intelligent Front-Ends could play in product model based applications. The paper ends with a short discussion of the role product models could have in Intelligent Front-Ends.  相似文献
