A series of search experiments tested detection of targets distinguished from the distractors by differences on a single dimension. Our aim was to use the pattern of search latencies to infer which features are coded automatically in early vision. For each of 12 different dimensions, one or more pairs of contrasting stimuli were tested. Each member of a pair played the role of target in one condition and the role of distractor in the other condition. Targets defined by larger values on the quantitative dimensions of length, number, and contrast, by line curvature, by misaligned orientation, and by values that deviated from a standard or prototypical color or shape were detected easily, whereas targets defined by smaller values on the quantitative dimensions, by straightness, by frame-aligned orientation, and by prototypical colors or shapes required slow and apparently serial search. We interpret the results as evidence that focused attention to single items or to groups is required to reduce background activity when the Weber fraction distinguishing the pooled feature activity with displays containing a target and with displays containing only distractors is too small to allow reliable discrimination. The perception and discrimination of rapidly changing texture stimuli by pigeons was examined in a target localization task. Five experienced pigeons were rewarded for finding and pecking at a randomly placed odd target block of small repeated elements embedded in a larger rectangular array of contrasting distractor elements. On dynamic color test trials, the color of the target, distractor, or both of these regions changed at rates of 100, 250, 500, or 1000 ms per frame. The number of colors appearing within such trials also varied. Pigeons performed well above chance in all test conditions, with target-associated changes producing the best discrimination. The results suggest: (a) global relational information can exclusively guide target localization behavior, (b) pigeons can perceptually group and segregate colored textured differences quite rapidly (< or = 100 ms), and (c) pigeons may possess automatic search control processes that can be captured by stimulus-driven changes in the display.  相似文献

Two experiments investigated texture discrimination in pigeons. In a simultaneous conditional-discrimination procedure, pigeons were reinforced for pecking at a small target region of identically colored form elements embedded in a larger region of distractor elements. These regions differed in either color or shape or differed redundantly in both dimensions. Pigeons readily acquired these discriminations and showed substantial positive discrimination transfer to new displays composed from novel recombinations of training colors and shapes, novel colors and shapes, and novel spatial organizations. The global organization of these displays appeared to be chief property mediating performance. This suggests that pigeons have mechanisms for perceptually grouping regions of similar colors and shapes, and these mechanisms may be similar to the preattentive visual mechanisms proposed for human texture segregation. In 5 experiments the authors examine the role of object-based grouping on negative priming. The experiments used a letter-matching task with multiple letters presented in temporally separated prime and probe displays. On mismatch trials, distractor letters in primes were repeated as targets in probes, or distractor and target letters were completely different. Negative priming was shown by slowed responses when distractors were repeated as targets relative to when the stimuli differed. This occurred both when only letters were presented (Experiments 1 and 4) and when letters were surrounded by boxes (Experiment 5). Experiments 2, 3, and 4 showed that negative priming was affected by the grouping of target and distractor letters in prime displays. Negative priming was reduced when 1 of the distractor letters was placed in the target box and 1 was left outside the box; facilitatory priming was observed when both distractor letters appeared in the target box. The data were accounted for in terms of there being (a) object-based competition for visual selection, (b) inhibition of distractor objects that compete for selection with target objects, and (c) activation or inhibition of the identities of all component elements within target or distractor objects.  相似文献

Humans have a remarkable capability to respond efficiently to a stimulus of interest despite other stimuli competing for neural resources. The current study investigated how the human system copes with distracting stimuli. During each trial, participants viewed 2 sequential stimuli that were each associated with a specific action based on an arbitrary mapping. The 1st stimulus served as a distractor, and the 2nd stimulus required a response (target). When the distractor preceded the target by more than a few hundred milliseconds, response latencies were slower when the 2 stimuli were associated with the same response. The authors propose that this negative compatibility effect stemmed from an inhibitory mechanism that the human system utilizes to prevent the distractor from eliciting an unwanted response. Three pigeons searched for a unique target among 31 identical distractors, and search reaction time (RT) was measured. Within experiments, target and distractor on each trial were drawn from the same small set of forms that differed from each other by simple features. Correlations across sessions among RTs to the various form pairs were analyzed. Exp 1 indicated drifts of attention between the top of the forms, where a gap might appear, and the bottom, where a line might appear, and also suggested drifts of attention to the line as a target feature. Exp 2 indicated similar drifts between the top and bottom of the forms and between small differences and large differences in target features. Attention to intraform location appeared relatively independent of attention to target features. The method provides a new way to identify functionally separate aspects of stimulus processing and to describe their temporal properties. Age differences in a semantic category visual search task were investigated to determine whether the age effects were due to target learning deficits, distractor learning deficits, or a combination thereof. 12 young (mean age 20 yrs) and 12 older adults (mean age 70 yrs) received 2,400 trials each in consistent and varied versions of the search task. Following training, a series of transfer–reversal manipulations allowed the assessment of target learning and distractor learning both in isolation and in combination. The pattern of data suggests that older adults have a deficit in their ability to increase the attention–attraction strength of targets and to decrease the attention–attraction strength of distractors. The results are interpreted in terms of a strength-based framework of visual search performance. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The DIN color chart was developed in the 1950s by Manfred Richter using of classical psychophysical scaling techniques. It is based upon the idea that colors are ordered along three subjective dimensions, i.e. hue, saturation, and brightness. Furthermore, it is assumed that the colors of the DIN color chart fulfill the principle of specific equidistancy. The main aim of this study was to investigate this claim empirically. More specifically, it was tested whether colors of the same hue and brightness are equally spaced along the dimension of subjective saturation. The data were collected in three paired comparisons experiments and were analyzed using multidimensional scaling. According to the results, the psychological properties of the DIN color system can be replicated approximately. In addition to a confirmation of the postulate of equidistancy this research contributes to the understanding of the convergence of different scaling methods.  相似文献

Four experiments investigated whether a highly salient color singleton can be ignored during serial search. Observers searched for a target letter among nontarget letters and were instructed to ignore an irrelevant, highly salient color singleton that was either compatible or incompatible with the response to the target letter. The results indicate that it was possible to prevent attentional capture by the irrelevant singleton only when both the target and the distractor color were known. When either the color of the target or the color of the to-be-ignored singleton were varied over trials, the irrelevant singleton captured attention. The ability to selectively filter singleton distractors during serial search depends on the presence of an attentional set for a specific feature value of both target and distractor. In the absence of a consistently predictable feature value of both target and distractor, top-down control is not possible.  相似文献

Attentional control within 3-D space   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Four experiments investigated whether directing attention to a particular plane in depth enables observers to filter out information from another depth plane. Observers viewed stereoscopic displays and searched for a red line segment among green line segments. The results showed that directing attention to a particular depth plane cannot prevent attentional capture from another depth plane when the colors of the target and distractor are identical. However, it can prevent attentional capture by a singleton from another depth plane when the colors of the target and distractor are different. These results indicate that only when both color and depth information are selective in guiding attention to the target singleton can attentional capture by irrelevant singletons be prevented. The results also suggest that retinal disparity does not have the same special status as location information in two dimensions and should be considered as just another feature along which selection may occur.  相似文献

Participants are usually able to search rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) streams and report a single target, given that RSVP distractors do not typically deplete attention required for target identification. Here, participants performed single target search, but the target was preceded by a to-be-ignored distractor varying in valence and arousal. When the critical distractor was a sexual word, lower target accuracy was observed, particularly at short distractor-target stimulus onset asynchronies, even when participants were shown the critical distractors beforehand and told to ignore them. No reduction in target accuracy was evidenced when the critical distractor was negative, positive, threatening, or emotionally neutral. Target accuracy was predicted by participants' arousal ratings to the critical distractor words and by their memory for them, but not by their valence ratings. Memory for critical distractors mediated the relationship between arousal and target accuracy. The results provide evidence that arousing sexual words involuntarily capture attention and enter awareness at the expense of goal-driven targets, at least in the context of laboratory experiments performed by young university participants for whom sexual material might have high impact and relevance. Pigeons searched arrays of small forms displayed on computer monitors. On each trial, a single target form appeared together with two or more identical distractor forms. A set of six different forms was used in each of three experiments. All possible combinations of these forms, paired as target and distractor, appeared in each experimental session. Both the accuracy and speed of search increased with the number of distractors displayed. When both targets and distractors were new, accuracy was above chance only for the large (24-item) display, where transfer was highly significant. The experiments do not support the attribution to pigeons of a general "oddity concept." Rather, the results suggest that odd-item performance depends in part on a perceptual isolation of the target and in part on familiarity with target-distractor combinations. The authors investigated whether effects of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) are influenced by salience asymmetries, independent of associations. Two series of experiments analyzed unique effects of salience by using nonassociated, neutral categories that differed in salience. In a 3rd series, salience asymmetries were manipulated experimentally while holding associations between categories constant. In a 4th series, valent associations of the target categories were manipulated experimentally while holding salience asymmetries constant. Throughout, IAT effects were found to depend on salience asymmetries. Additionally, salience asymmetries between categories were assessed directly with a visual search task to tionally, provide an independent criterion of salience asymmetries. Salience asymmetries corresponded to IAT effects and also accounted for common variance in IAT effects and explicit measures of attitudes or the self-concept. Conjunctive visual search is most difficult when distractor types are in equal proportions and gets easier as the proportions diverge (e.g., E. Zohary & S. Hochstein, 1989). This may reflect restriction of search to the feature shared by the target and the less-frequent distractor. Alternatively, such effects could reflect target salience, which varies with distractor ratio. In 2 experiments, 60 participants searched 64-element displays for a conjunctive target among distractors of 2 types in various proportions. Participants were correctly informed (Experiment 1) or misinformed (Experiment 2) about which distractor type would be less frequent on most trials. In both experiments, the distractor-ratio effect was significantly influenced by the information provided to participants. These findings demonstrate the efficacy of top-down information in guiding attention and show that it can be applied flexibly, weighted toward particular target features. Patients with unilateral neglect following right hemisphere damage may have difficulty in moving towards contralesional targets. To test the hypothesis that this impairment arises from competing motor programs triggered by irrelevant ipsilesional stimuli, we examined 16 right hemisphere patients, eight with left visual neglect and eight without, in addition to eight healthy control subjects. In experiment 1 subjects performed sequences of movements using their right hand to targets on the contralesional or ipsilesional side of the responding limb. The locations of successive targets in each sequence were either predictable or unpredictable. In separate blocks of trials, targets appeared either alone or with a simultaneous distractor located at the immediately preceding target location. Neglect patients were significantly slower to execute movements to contralesional targets, but only for unpredictable movements and in the presence of a concurrent ipsilesional distractor. In contrast, healthy controls and right hemisphere patients without neglect showed no directional asymmetries of movement execution. In experiment 2 subjects were required to interrupt a predictable, reciprocating sequence of leftward and rightward movements in order to move to an occasional, unpredictable target that occurred either in the direction opposite to that expected, or in the same direction but twice the extent. Neglect patients were significantly slower in reprogramming the direction and extent of movements towards contralesional versus ipsilesional targets, and they also made significantly more errors when executing such movements. Right hemisphere patients without neglect showed a similar bias in reprogramming direction (but not extent) for contralesional targets, whereas healthy controls showed no directional asymmetry in either condition. On the basis of these findings we propose that neglect involves a competitive bias in favour of motor programs for actions directed towards ipsilesional versus contralesional events. We suggest that programming errors and increased latencies for contralesional movements arise because the damaged right hemisphere can no longer effectively inhibit the release of inappropriate motor programs towards ipsilesional events.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether costs invoked by the presence of an irrelevant singleton distractor in a visual search task are due to attentional capture by the irrelevant singleton or spatially unrelated filtering costs. Measures of spatial effects were based on distance effects, compatibility effects, and differences between singleton and nonsingleton target trials. The results show that the distractor only regularly captures attention when it is nonpredictive of the target position and unpredictably changes its features. When the distractor is antipredictive of the target position and the irrelevant features of target and distractor remain constant throughout the experiment, spatially unrelated filtering costs prevail. Further experiments showed that filtering costs accrue from distractor inhibition or target activation processes, which in turn can be modeled as instances of priming of pop-out. The present study thus clarifies the notion of filtering costs and modifies present accounts of the distraction effect. Moreover, the results also relate to research of intertrial priming by showing that priming affects the stage of attentional selection and depends on top-down attentional control settings. The synthetic-analytic listening task (SALT) developed by Dye and colleagues [Dye et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 96, 2720-2731 (1994)] was applied to a task in which an amplitude-modulated tonal carrier was presented as a target during the standard stimulus. The standard stimulus was followed by a test stimulus in which the target along with another amplitude-modulated carrier (the distractor) was presented. The listener determined if in the test stimulus, the target (which was presented along with the distractor) was higher or lower in modulation depth than when the target was presented alone as the standard stimulus. The target and distractor were either 1- or 4-kHz carriers modulated at one of ten depths of modulation during the test stimulus at modulation rates ranging from 4 to 64 Hz. SALT was used to estimate the relative weight listeners assigned to the target and distractor as a function of the difference between their modulation rates, both for target carrier frequencies above and for target carrier frequencies below the distractor carrier frequency. When the target and distractor were modulated at the same rate, the target and distractor weights were equal, indicating synthetic listening. When the target and distractor differed in modulation rate, the listener gave more weight to the target suggesting a form of analytic listening. The result demonstrate the applicability of SALT to studies of modulation and reinforce the claim that different spectral components modulated with the same modulation pattern are processed synthetically.  相似文献

Six experiments were conducted to determine the circumstances under which an irrelevant singleton captures attention. Subjects searched for a target while ignoring a salient distractor that appeared at different stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) prior to each search display. Spatial congruency and interference effects were measured. The strategies available to find the target were controlled (only singleton-detection mode, only feature-search mode, or both search strategies available). An irrelevant abrupt onset captured attention in search for a color target, across SOAs, whatever strategies were available. In contrast, in search for a shape target, an irrelevant color singleton captured attention in the singleton-detection condition but delayed response at its location in the feature-search condition, across SOAs. When both strategies were available, capture was short lived (50- to 100-msec SOAs). The theoretical implications of these findings in relation to current views on attentional capture are discussed. We investigated the attentional capture effect of emotional faces under sufficient or restricted attentional conditions. In a modified visual search paradigm, three kinds of schematic faces (angry, happy, and neutral) served as stimuli. Participants were instructed to search for a target face indicated by a dot and to respond to the dot's position. In this design, the emotional content of the face is task-irrelevant and does not need to be attended. The results of Experiment 1 demonstrate that having an angry face as the target face elicited a faster response than did the neutral target face, and when the angry face is used as a distractor, the response to the target was delayed compared to the response with no such distractor. Experiment 2 included inverted faces to decrease emotional content; results showed that inversion of the faces reduced the effect of angry faces on the search performance. When attention was cued to a specific area in Experiment 3, the effect of angry faces outside of the cued area became weaker. In conclusion, the results indicate that a task-irrelevant angry face can capture attention beyond top-down control, but this effect is modulated by the availability of attentional resources.
