In order to assess the fatigue behaviour of structural components under a complex (cyclic or random) multiaxial stress history, methods based on damage mechanics concepts can be employed. In this paper, a model for fatigue damage evaluation in the case of an arbitrary multiaxial loading history is proposed by using an endurance function which allows us to determine the damage accumulation up to the final failure of the material. By introducing an evolution equation for the endurance function, the final collapse can be assumed to occur when the damage D is complete, that is when D reaches the unity. The parameters of this model, which adopts the stress invariants and the deviatoric stress invariants to quantify the damage phenomenon, are determined through a Genetic Algorithm once experimental data on the fatigue behaviour of the material being examined are known for some complex stress histories. With respect to traditional approaches to multiaxial fatigue assessment, the proposed model presents the following advantages: (1) the evaluation of a critical plane is not necessary; (2) no cycle counting algorithm to determine the fatigue life is required, because it considers the progressive damage process during the fatigue load history; (3) the model can be applied to any kind of stress history (uniaxial cyclic loading, multiaxial in‐phase or out‐of‐phase cyclic loading, uniaxial or multiaxial random loading).  相似文献

A new computational methodology is proposed for fatigue life prediction of notched components subjected to variable amplitude multiaxial loading. In the proposed methodology, an estimation method of non‐proportionality factor (F) proposed by authors in the case of constant amplitude multiaxial loading is extended and applied to variable amplitude multiaxial loading by using Wang‐Brown's reversal counting approach. The pseudo stress correction method integrated with linear elastic finite element analysis is utilized to calculate the local elastic‐plastic stress and strain responses at the notch root. For whole local strain history, the plane with weight‐averaged maximum shear strain range is defined as the critical plane in this study. Based on the defined critical plane, a multiaxial fatigue damage model combined with Miner's linear cumulative damage law is used to predict fatigue life. The experimentally obtained fatigue data for 7050‐T7451 aluminium alloy notched shaft specimens under constant and variable amplitude multiaxial loadings are used to verify the proposed methodology and equivalent strain‐based methodology. The results show that the proposed methodology is superior to equivalent strain‐based methodology.  相似文献

A stress-based method to predict lifetime under multiaxial fatigue loadings   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper extends to low/medium‐cycle fatigue a stress‐based method recently proposed by the same authors for high‐cycle multiaxial fatigue assessments. By considering the plane of maximum shear stress amplitude coincident with the microcrack initiation plane, the method requires the calculation both of the maximum shear stress amplitude and the maximum normal stress relative to the same plane. Multiaxial fatigue life estimates are made by means of bi‐parametric modified Wöhler curves, which take into account the mean stress effect, the influence of the out‐of‐phase angle and the presence of notches by using a generalization to multiaxial fatigue of the fatigue strength reduction factor Kf. Approximately 700 experimental data taken from the literature are used to demonstrate that the method is a useful tool to summarize fatigue strength data of both smooth and notched components, subjected to either in‐phase or out‐of‐phase loads. Finally, a simple practical rule for the calculation of the multiaxial fatigue strength reduction factor is proposed.  相似文献

This paper summarizes an attempt at proposing a new engineering method suitable for estimating the fatigue lifetime of steel‐ and aluminium‐welded connections subjected to variable amplitude multiaxial fatigue loading. In particular, the proposed approach is based on the use of the so‐called Modified Wöhler Curve Method (MWCM), i.e. a bi‐parametrical critical plane approach, whose accuracy has been checked so far solely in addressing the constant amplitude multiaxial fatigue problem. In order to extend the use of our criterion to variable amplitude situations, the critical plane is suggested here as being determined by taking full advantage of the maximum variance concept, that is, such a plane is assumed to be the one containing the direction along which the variance of the resolved shear stress reaches its maximum value. The main advantage of such a strategy is that the cycle counting can directly be performed by considering the shear stress resolved along the maximum variance direction: by so doing, the problem is greatly simplified, allowing those well‐established cycle counting methods specifically devised to address the uniaxial variable amplitude problem to be extended to those situations involving multiaxial fatigue loading. The validity of the proposed methodology was checked by using two different datasets taken from the literature and generated by testing both steel and aluminium tube‐to‐plate welded connections subjected to in‐phase and 90° out‐of‐phase variable amplitude bending and torsion. This new fatigue life assessment technique was seen to be highly accurate allowing the estimates to fall within the calibration scatter bands not only when the constants in the governing equations were calculated by using the experimental uniaxial and torsional fully reversed fatigue curves, but also when they were determined by using the reference curves supplied, for the investigated geometry, by the available standard codes. These results seem to strongly support the idea that, thanks to its peculiar features, our method can be considered as an effective engineering approach capable of performing multiaxial fatigue assessment under variable amplitude loading which fully complies with the recommendations of the available standard codes.  相似文献

In the present paper, the fatigue lifetime of metallic structural components subjected to variable amplitude loading is evaluated by applying 2 different multiaxial high‐cycle fatigue criteria. Such criteria, proposed by some of the present authors, are based on the critical plane approach and aim at reducing a given multiaxial stress state to an equivalent uniaxial stress condition. In particular, the procedure employed by both criteria consists of the following 3 steps: (1) definition of the critical plane; (2) counting of loading cycles; and (3) estimation of fatigue damage. Finally, the previous criteria are validated by comparing the theoretical results with experimental data related to smooth metallic specimens subjected to uniaxial and multiaxial variable amplitude loading.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with an experimental and numerical study of the fatigue behaviour of tubular AlMgSi welded specimens subjected to biaxial loading. In‐phase torsion–bending fatigue tests under constant amplitude loading were performed in a standard servo‐hydraulic machine with a suitable gripping system. Some tests in pure rotating bending with and without steady torsion were also performed. The influence of stress ratio R and bending–torsion stress ratio were analysed. Correlation of the fatigue lives was done using the distortion energy hypothesis (DEH), based on the local stresses and strains. The applicability of the local strain approach method to the prediction of the fatigue life of the welded tubular specimens was also investigated. Static torsion has only a slight detrimental influence on fatigue strength. The DEH (von Mises criterion) based on local stresses in the weld toes was shown to satisfactorily correlate fatigue lives for in‐phase multiaxial stress–strain states. The stress–strain field intensity predictions were shown to have less scatter and are in better agreement with the experimental results than the equivalent strain energy density approach.  相似文献

Based on Wang and Brown's reversal counting method, a new approach to the determination of the critical plane is proposed by the defined plane with a weight‐averaged maximum shear strain range under multiaxial variable amplitude loading. According to the determined critical plane, a detailed procedure of multiaxial fatigue life prediction is introduced to predict lives in the low‐cycle multiaxial fatigue regime. The proposed approach is verified by two multiaxial fatigue damage models and Miner's linear cumulative damage law. The results showed that the proposed approach can effectively predict the orientation of the failure plane under multiaxial variable amplitude loading and give a satisfactory life prediction.  相似文献

In order to study the use of a local approach to predict crack‐initiation life on notches in mechanical components under multiaxial fatigue conditions, the study of the local cyclic elasto‐plastic behaviour and the selection of an appropriate multiaxial fatigue model are essential steps in fatigue‐life prediction. The evolution of stress–strain fields from the initial state to the stabilized state depends on the material type, loading amplitude and loading paths. A series of biaxial tension–compression tests with static or cyclic torsion were carried out on a biaxial servo‐hydraulic testing machine. Specimens were made of an alloy steel 42CrMo4 quenched and tempered. The shear stress relaxations of the cyclic tension–compression with a steady torsion angle were observed for various loading levels. Finite element analyses were used to simulate the cyclic behaviour and good agreement was found. Based on the local stabilized cyclic elastic–plastic stress–strain responses, the strain‐based multiaxial fatigue damage parameters were applied and correlated with the experimentally obtained lives. As a comparison, a stress‐invariant‐based approach with the minimum circumscribed ellipse (MCE) approach for evaluating the effective shear stress amplitude was also applied for fatigue life prediction. The comparison showed that both the equivalent strain range and the stress‐invariant parameter with non‐proportional factors correlated well with the experimental results obtained in this study.  相似文献

A multiaxial fatigue criterion for random loading   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
ABSTRACT A multiaxial fatigue criterion for random loading is proposed. Firstly, the orientation of the critical plane, where fatigue life estimation is carried out, is determined from the weighted mean position of the principal stress directions. Then, the scalar value of the normal stress vector N (t) perpendicular to the critical plane is taken as the cycle counting variable since the direction of such a vector is fixed with respect to time (conversely to the time‐varying direction of the shear stress vector C (t)), and a nonlinear combination of normal and shear stress components acting on the critical plane is used to define an equivalent stress amplitude. Finally, a damage accumulation model is employed to process such an equivalent stress amplitude and to determine fatigue endurance. This criterion is herein applied to some relevant random fatigue tests (proportional bending and torsion).  相似文献

Low‐cycle fatigue data of type 304 stainless steel obtained under axial‐torsional loading of variable amplitudes are analyzed using four multiaxial fatigue parameters: SWT, KBM, FS and LKN. Rainflow cycle counting and Morrow's plastic work interaction rule are used to calculate fatigue damage. The performance of a fatigue model is dependent on the fatigue parameter, the critical plane and the damage accumulation rule employed in the model. The conservatism and non‐conservatism of predicted lives are examined for some combinations of these variables. A new critical plane called the weight function‐critical plane is introduced for variable amplitude loading. This approach is found to improve the KBM‐based life predictions.  相似文献

A new calculation approach is suggested to the fatigue life evaluation of notched specimens under multiaxial variable amplitude loading. Within this suggested approach, if the computed uniaxial fatigue damage by the pure torsional loading path is larger than that by the axial tension–compression loading path, a shear strain‐based multiaxial fatigue damage parameter is assigned to calculate multiaxial fatigue damage; otherwise, an axial strain‐based multiaxial fatigue damage parameter is assigned to calculate multiaxial fatigue damage. Furthermore, the presented method employs shear strain‐based and axial strain‐based multiaxial fatigue damage parameters in substitution of equivalent strain amplitude to consider the influence of nonproportional additional hardening. The experimental data of GH4169 superalloy and 7050‐T7451 aluminium alloy notched components are used to illustrate the presented multiaxial fatigue lifetime estimation approach for notched components, and the results reveal that estimations are accurate.  相似文献

This paper presents analytical and experimental investigations for fatigue lives of structures under uniaxial, torsional, multiaxial proportional, and non‐proportional loading conditions. It is known that the rotation of principal stress/strain axes and material additional hardening due to non‐proportionality of cycle loading are the 2 main causes resulting in shorter fatigue lives compared with those under proportional loading. This paper treats these 2 causes as independent factors influencing multiaxial fatigue damage and proposes a new non‐proportional influencing parameter to consider their combined effects on the fatigue lives of structures. A critical plane model for multiaxial fatigue lives prediction is also proposed by using the proposed non‐proportional influencing factor to modify the Fatemi‐Socie model. The comparison between experiment results and theoretical evaluation shows that the proposed model can effectively predict the fatigue life due to multiaxial non‐proportional loading.  相似文献

About the Influence of Residual Stresses, Weld Geometry and Multiaxial Stress States on the Oprational Fatigue Strength of Welded Constructions from Structural Steels For a fatigue design of welded structures among other influences also the influence of residual stresses, weld geometries and multiaxial stresses must be taken into account. Knowledge about the influence of residual stresses in the high-cycle fatigue region cannot be transformed unconditionally to the behaviour in the finite-fatigue life region or to variable amplitude loading with exceedances of the endurance limit, because the fatigue behaviour depends also on the stress concentration in the weld toe and the related stress relief. Principally, the fatigue strength is improved by a better weld geometry, e.g. by TIG-dressing, by introduction of radii which are big enough. In order to transform data obtained on specimens to components of bigger size criteria like structural or local equivalent stress, first technically detectable crack and size effects must be considered. For a fatigue life calculation for structures under variable amplitude loading a damage sum of D = 0.5 is recommended. While for the evaluation of multiaxial stress states with constant principle stress directions the von Mises criterion can be applied satisfactorily using structural or local stresses in the weld toe. However, conventional hypotheses fail by an overestimation of fatigue life, when the principle stress directions change, e.g. due to a phase difference between normal and shear stresses. Presently, in such cases only an experimental proof of the fatigue behaviour can be performed.  相似文献

In this paper, based on the process of the fatigue crack initiation and the critical plane theory, a continuous stress parameter was proposed to quantify the driving force of the fatigue crack initiation for the fully reversed multiaxial fatigue loading. In this stress parameter, the shear stress amplitude and normal stress amplitude on the critical plane were combined with the variable coefficients which were affected by the normalized fatigue life and the loading non‐proportionality. Owing to these coefficients, for the multiaxial loadings with different non‐proportionalities, the driving force of the fatigue crack initiation during the whole life could be described. After that, a novel accumulative fatigue damage model was established for the multiaxial two‐stage step spectrum. In this model, the accumulative damage was calculated according to the variation of the proposed stress parameter on the critical plane. Considering the directionality of the multiaxial fatigue damage, for the spectrum in which the loading path was variable, the damage accumulation was carried out on the critical planes of the both loadings, and the larger one was chosen as the final accumulative fatigue damage. In order to verify the new model, up to 41 different multiaxial two‐stage step spectrum loading tests on 2024‐T4 aluminium alloy were collected. The new model, as well as other five commonly used models, was applied to calculate the accumulative fatigue damage. The final results showed that, compared with other commonly used models, the new model had the most accurate results with the smallest scatters.  相似文献

The analysis of fatigue behavior under multiaxial variable amplitude stress states, despite its wide applicability, has not been fully studied. Issues such as varying degrees of nonproportionality of the load history, cycle counting, damage accumulation, failure behavior of the material, and mean stress fluctuations which can significantly affect the results of these analyses have not been well understood. In this study, a methodology for the analysis of fatigue behavior under multiaxial variable amplitude loading conditions is employed which accounts for the aforementioned issues. At its core, the applied methodology uses critical plane analysis based on the failure behavior of each material to assess the fatigue damage. In order to evaluate the performance of the analysis method, axial, torsional, and combined axial‐torsional variable amplitude tests were performed on one ductile and one brittle behaving steel. The applied methodology resulted in close estimation of the experimental fatigue life for both ductile and brittle behaving steels.  相似文献

Fatigue failure, ratcheting behaviour and influence of pre‐fatigue on fatigue behaviour were investigated under uniaxial cyclic loading for CK45 steel at room temperature. The fatigue life was recorded for various stress ratios, and then, three mean stress models were considered. The Walker model showed an acceptable accuracy in comparison with Smith–Watson–Topper and Park et al. models. The ratcheting strains were measured for various loading conditions in order to evaluate the impact of mean stress, stress amplitude and stress ratio on ratcheting behaviour. The experimental results showed that the ratcheting strain increased with increasing mean stress, stress amplitude and stress ratio. In addition, the results of the post‐ratcheting‐fatigue tests showed that although the fatigue life decreased with increasing pre‐ratcheting strain (the ratcheting strain that is accumulated in pre‐fatigue), the loading condition that pre‐fatigue experiments were conducted has a significant effect on subsequent fatigue behaviour.  相似文献

This paper proposed a simple life prediction model for assessing fatigue lives of metallic materials subjected to multiaxial low‐cycle fatigue (LCF) loading. This proposed model consists of the maximum shear strain range, the normal strain range and the maximum normal stress on the maximum shear strain range plane. Additional cyclic hardening developed during non‐proportional loading is included in the normal stress and strain terms. A computer‐based procedure for multiaxial fatigue life prediction incorporating critical plane damage parameters is presented as well. The accuracy and reliability of the proposed model are systematically checked by using about 300 test data through testing nine kinds of material under both zero and non‐zero mean stress multiaxial loading paths.  相似文献

A new creep–fatigue damage cumulative model is proposed under multiaxial thermomechanical random loading, in which the damage at high temperature can be divided into the pure fatigue damage and the equivalent fatigue damage from creep. During the damage accumulation process, the elementary percentage of the equivalent fatigue damage increment is proportional to that of the creep damage increment, and the creep damage is converted to the equivalent fatigue damage. Moreover, combined with a multiaxial cyclic counting method, a life prediction method is developed based on the proposed creep–fatigue damage cumulative model. In the developed life prediction method, the effects of nonproportional hardening on the fatigue and creep damages are considered, and the influence of mean stress on damage is also taken into account. The thermomechanical fatigue experimental data for thin‐walled tubular specimen of superalloy GH4169 under multiaxial constant amplitude and variable amplitude loadings were used to verify the proposed model. The results showed that the proposed method can obtain satisfactory life prediction results.  相似文献

A short crack model originally proposed for multiaxial constant amplitude loading is extended and applied to multiaxial variable amplitude loading. Load sequences have a significant influence on variable amplitude life; they are taken into account using algorithms originally proposed only for uniaxial loading. The estimated fatigue lives of unnotched tubular specimens and notched shafts under different in- and out-of-phase multiaxial constant and variable amplitude load histories are compared with the experimental results. The comparison reveals that the proposed short crack approach enables sufficiently accurate estimation. Moreover, the estimated critical planes, i.e., the planes of maximum crack growth rate or minimum life, are in good agreement with the experimental observations.  相似文献
