Pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) which is rich in cellulose, relatively inexpensive, and abundantly available has the potential for polymer reinforcement. The present study investigated the tensile, flexural, and impact behavior of PALF-reinforced polyester composites as a function of fiber loading, fiber length, and fiber surface modification. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composites were found to increase with fiber content in accordance with the rule of mixtures. The elongation at break of the composites exhibits an increase by the introduction of fiber. The mechanical properties are optimum at a fiber length of 30 mm. The flexural stiffness and flexural strength of the composites with a 30% fiber weight fraction are 2.76 GPa and 80.2 MPa, respectively. The specific flexural stiffness of the composite is about 2.3 times greater than that of neat polyester resin. The work of fracture (impact strength) of the composite with 30% fiber content was found to be 24 kJ m−2. Significant improvement in the tensile strength was observed for composites with silane A172-treated fibers. Scanning electron microscopic studies were carried out to understand the fiber-matrix adhesion, fiber breakage, and failure topography. The PALF polyester composites possess superior mechanical properties compared to other cellulose-based natural fiber composites. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Green composites, a bio‐based polymer matrix is reinforced by natural fibers, are special class of bio‐composites. Interest about green composites is continuously growing because they are environment‐friendly. This study describes the preparation and mechanical characterization of green composites using polylactic acid (PLA) matrix including chicken feather fiber (CFF) as reinforcement. Extrusion and an injection molding process were used to prepare CFF/PLA composites at a controlled temperature range. CFF/PLA composites with fiber mass content of 2%, 5%, and 10% were manufactured. The effects of fiber concentration and fiber length on mechanical properties of CFF/PLA composites have been studied. Mechanical properties of composites were investigated by tensile, compression, bending, hardness, and Izod impact testing. The results of experiments indicated that Young's modulus, compressive strength, flexural modulus, and hardness of the PLA reinforced CFF composites are higher but tensile strength, elongation at break, bending strength and impact strength of them are lower than pure PLA. The results indicate that these types of composites can be used for various applications. POLYM. COMPOS., 38:837–845, 2017. © 2015 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Biocomposites are prepared from a cheap, renewable natural fiber, coir (coconut fiber) as reinforcement with a biodegradable polyester amide (BAK 1095) matrix. In order to have better fiber‐matrix interaction the fibers are surface modified through alkali treatment, cyanoethylation, bleaching and vinyl grafting. The effects of different fiber surface treatments and fiber amounts on the performance of resulting bio‐composites are investigated. Among all modifications, cyanoethylated coir‐BAK composites show better tensile strength (35.50 MPa) whereas 7% methyl methacrylate grafted coir‐BAK composites show significant improvement in flexural strength (87.36 MPa). The remarkable achievement of the present investigation is that a low strength coir fiber, through optimal surface modifications, on reinforcement with BAK show an encouraging level of mechanical properties. Moreover, the elongation at break of BAK polymer is considerably reduced by the incorporation of coir fibers from nearly 400% (percent elongation of pure BAK) to 16‐24% (coir‐BAK biocomposites). SEM investigations show that surface modifications improve the fiber‐matrix adhesion. From biodegradation studies we find that after 52 days of soil burial, alkali treated and bleached coir‐BAK composites show significant weight loss. More than 70% decrease in flexural strength is observed for alkali treated coir‐BAK composites after 35 days of soil burial. The loss of weight and the decrease of flexural strength of degraded composites are more or less directly related.  相似文献

The natural fiber reinforced biodegradable polymer composites were prepared with short jute fiber as reinforcement in PLA (Poly lactic acid) matrix. The short jute fiber is successively treated with NaOH at various concentrations (5%, 10%, and 15%) and H2O2. The composites were prepared with untreated and treated short jute fibers at different weight proportions (up to 25%) in PLA and investigated for mechanical properties. The results showed that the composite with successive alkali treated jute fiber at 10% NaOH and H2O2 with 20% fiber loading has shown 18% higher flexural strength than neat PLA and untreated jute/PLA composite. The flexural modulus of the composite at 25% fiber loading was 125% and 110% higher than that of composites with untreated fibers and neat PLA, respectively. The impact strength of composite with untreated fibers at higher fiber weight fraction was 23% high as compared to neat PLA and 26% high compared to composite with treated fibers. The water absorption was more for untreated jute/PLA composite at 25% fiber loading than all other composites. The composite with untreated fibers has high thermal degradation compared with treated fibers but lower than that of pure PLA matrix. The enzymatic environment has increased the rate of degradation of composites as compared to soil burial. Surface morphology of biodegraded surfaces of the composites were studied using SEM method. Natural fibers, such as Flax, Sisal, Hibiscus Sabdariffa, and Grewia optiva (GO) possess good reinforcing capability when properly compounded with polymers. These fibers are relatively inexpensive, easily available from renewable resources, and possess favorable values of specific strength and specific modulus. The mechanical performance of natural fiber‐reinforced polymers (FRPs) is often limited owing to a weak fiber‐ matrix interface. In contrast, urea–formaldehyde (UF) resins are well known to have a strong adhesion to most cellulose‐containing materials. This article deals with the synthesis of short G. optiva fiber‐reinforced UF polymer matrix‐based composites. G. optiva fiber‐reinforced UF composites processed by compression molding have been studied by evaluating their mechanical, physical, and chemical properties. This work reveals that mechanical properties such as: tensile strength, compressive strength, flexural strength, and wear resistance of the UF matrix increase up to 30% fiber loading and then decreases for higher loading when fibers are incorporated into the polymer matrix. Morphological and thermal studies of the matrix, fiber, and short FRP composites have also been carried out. The swelling, moisture absorbance, chemical resistance, and water uptake behavior of these composites have also been carried out at different intervals. The results obtained lay emphasis on the utilization of these fibers, as potential reinforcing materials in bio‐based polymer composites. POLYM. Fiber reinforced polymer composites has been used in a variety of application because of their many advantages such as relatively low cost of production, easy to fabricate, and superior strength compare to neat polymer resins. Reinforcement in polymer is either synthetic or natural. Synthetic fiber such as glass, carbon, etc. has high specific strength but their fields of application are limited due to higher cost of production. Recently there is an increase interest in natural composites which are made by reinforcement of natural fiber. In this connection, an investigation has been carried out to make better utilization of coconut coir fiber for making value added products. The objective of the present research work is to study the physical, mechanical, and water absorption behavior of coir/glass fiber reinforced epoxy based hybrid composites. The effect of fiber loading and length on mechanical properties like tensile strength, flexural strength, and hardness of composites is studied. The experimental results reveal that the maximum strength properties is observed for the composite with 10 wt% fiber loading at 15 mm length. The maximum flexural strength of 63 MPa is observed for composites with 10 wt% fiber loading at 15 mm fiber length. Similarly, the maximum hardness value of 21.3 Hv is obtained for composites with 10 wt% fiber loading at 20 mm fiber length. Also, the surface morphology of fractured surfaces after tensile testing is examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM). POLYM. This study is aimed at the potential use of a new natural fiber in polymer based composites (Eulaliopsis binata fiber) as a reinforcing material whose potential for tribological applications is still an unexposed area of research. The characterization studies of the fiber has been carried out with XRD, EDS, and Scanning electron microscope (SEM). Different weight percentages (10, 20, 30, and 40%) of short fiber were taken as reinforcement with epoxy polymer resin and hardener to study the tensile, flexural, and impact strength as well as the abrasive wear behavior of the developed composites. The experimental results indicate significant improvement in the mechanical and wear properties of epoxy with the incorporation of Eulaliopsis binata (EB) fiber. The composites containing 30 and 20 weight fraction of Eulaliopsis binata fiber exhibit optimum mechanical properties and abrasion resistance, respectively. The fractured and worn surfaces of the composites were studied under SEM to find out the failure mechanisms.  相似文献

Natural fiber‐based thermoplastic composites are generally lower in strength performance compared to thermoset composites. However, they have the advantage of design flexibility and recycling possibilities. Hybridization with small amounts of synthetic fibers makes these natural fiber composites more suitable for technical applications such as automotive interior parts. Hemp fiber is one of the important lignocellulosic bast fiber and has been used as reinforcement for industrial applications. This study focused on the performance of injection‐molded short hemp fiber and hemp/glass fiber hybrid polypropylene composites. Results showed that hybridization with glass fiber enhanced the performance properties. A value of 101 MPa for flexural strength and 5.5 GPa for the flexural modulus is achieved from a hybrid composite containing 25 wt % of hemp and 15 wt % of glass. Notched Izod impact strength of the hybrid composites exhibited great enhancement (34%). Analysis of fiber length distribution in the composite and fracture surface was performed to study the fiber breakage and fracture mechanism. Thermal properties and resistance to water absorption properties of the hemp fiber composites were improved by hybridization with glass fibers. Overall studies indicated that the short hemp/glass fiber hybrid polypropylene composites are promising candidates for structural applications where high stiffness and thermal resistance is required. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Lightweight composites are preferred for automotive applications due to the weight restrictions and also due to the presence of inherent voids that can enhance the sound absorption of these composites. The density of the reinforcing materials plays a crucial role in such lightweight composites. Milkweed is a unique natural cellulose fiber that has a completely hollow center and low density (0.9 g cm?3) unlike any other natural cellulose fiber. The low density of milkweed fibers will allow the incorporation of higher amounts of fiber per unit weight of a composite, which is expected to lead to lightweight composites with better properties. Polypropylene (PP) composites reinforced with milkweed fibers have much better flexural and tensile properties than similar PP composites reinforced with kenaf fibers. Milkweed fiber‐reinforced composites have much higher strength but are stiffer than kenaf fiber‐reinforced PP composites. Increasing the proportion of milkweed in the composites from 35 to 50% increases the flexural strength but decreases the tensile strength. The low density of milkweed fibers allows the incorporation of higher amounts of fibers per unit weight of the composites and hence provides better properties compared to composites reinforced with common cellulose fibers with relatively high density. This research shows that low‐density reinforcing materials can more efficiently reinforce lightweight composites. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Triglyceride oils derived from plants have been used to synthesize several different monomers for use in structural applications. These monomers have been found to form polymers with a wide range of physical properties. They exhibit tensile moduli in the 1–2 GPa range and glass transition temperatures in the range 70–120 °C, depending on the particular monomer and the resin composition. Composite materials were manufactured utilizing these resins and produced a variety of durable and strong materials. At low glass fiber content (35 wt %), composites produced from acrylated epoxidized soybean oil by resin transfer molding displayed a tensile modulus of 5.2 GPa, a flexural modulus of 9 GPa, a tensile strength of 129 MPa, and flexural strength of 206 MPa. At higher fiber contents (50 wt %) composites produced from acrylated epoxidized soybean oil displayed tensile and compression moduli of 24.8 GPa each, and tensile and compressive strengths of 463.2 and 302.6 MPa, respectively. In addition to glass fibers, natural fibers such as flax and hemp were used. Hemp composites of 20% fiber content displayed a tensile strength of 35 MPa and a tensile modulus of 4.4 GPa. The flexural modulus was ∼2.6 GPa and the flexural strength was in the range 35.7–51.3 MPa, depending on the test conditions. The flax composite materials had tensile and flexural strengths in the ranges 20–30 and 45–65 MPa, respectively. The properties exhibited by both the natural- and synthetic fiber-reinforced composites can be combined through the production of “hybrid” composites. These materials combine the low cost of natural fibers with the high performance of synthetic fibers. Their properties lie between those displayed by the all-glass and all-natural composites. Characterization of the polymer properties also presents opportunities for improvement through genetic engineering technology. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The results of an experimental investigation to study the effects of replacement of cement (by mass) with three percentages of fly ash and the effects of addition of natural san fibers on the slump, Vebe time, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength of fly ash concrete are presented. San fibers belong to the category of “natural bast fibers.” It is also known as “sunn hemp.” Its scientific (botanical) name is Crotalaria juncea. It is mostly grown in the Indian subcontinent, Brazil, eastern and southern Africa and some parts of the United States (Hawaii and Florida). A control mixture of proportions 1:1.4:2.19 with W/Cm of 0.47 and superplasticizer/cementitious ratio of 0.015 was designed. Cement was replaced with three percentages (35%, 45% and 55%) of class F fly ash. Three percentages of san fibers (0.25%, 0.50% and 0.75%) having 25-mm length were used. The test results indicated that the replacement of cement with fly ash increased the workability (slump and Vebe time), decreased compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength and had no significant effect on the impact strength of plain (control) concrete. Addition of san fibers reduced the workability, did not significantly affect the compressive strength, increased the splitting tensile strength and flexural strength and tremendously enhanced the impact strength of fly ash concrete as the percentage of fibers increased.  相似文献

The use of inorganic (glass) fiber reinforcement to enhance the mechanical properties and reduce the anisotropy of in situ composites based on blends of liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) with polyetherimide (PEI) is discussed. It was found that the tensile and flexural moduli are increased and the anisotropy is reduced with increasing grass content (when compared at equivalent LCP weight fractions). The creep compliance of the PEI/LCP composites is reduced upon the addition of glass fibers. However, the disadvantage is that the processability worsens upon addition of glass fibers to the PEI/LCP in situ composites. The effect of adding glass reinforcement on the ultimate tensile strength is less clear, because the data do not show any consistent trend. Similarly, the elongation at break and toughness do not show any consistent improvement upon addition of glass reinforcement. Morphological studies show that there is considerable difference between the size and texture of the reinforcing glass fibers and LCP microfibrils.  相似文献

This study focuses on the performance characteristics of wood/short carbon fiber hybrid biopolyamide11 (PA11) composites. The composites were produced by melt‐compounding of the fibers with the polyamide via extrusion and injection molding. The results showed that mechanical properties, such as tensile and flexural strength and modulus of the wood fiber composites were significantly higher than the PA11 and hybridization with carbon fiber further enhanced the performance properties, as well as the thermal resistance of the composites. Compared to wood fiber composites (30% wood fiber), hybridization with carbon fiber (10% wood fiber and 20% carbon fiber) increased the tensile and flexural modulus by 168% and 142%, respectively. Izod impact strength of the hybrid composites exhibited a good improvement compared to wood fiber composites. Thermal properties and resistance to water absorption of the composites were improved by hybridization with carbon fiber. In overall, the study indicated that the developed hybrid composites are promising candidates for high performance applications, where high stiffness and thermal resistance are required. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A type of new fiber-reinforced geopolymeric composites was developed by combining metakaolin and polyacetal (POM) fibers. High-strength POM fibers were first prepared through melt spinning followed by a hot-drawing procedure, and then a series of metakaolin-based geopolymeric composites with different contents of POM fibers were synthesized. The mechanical and tribological properties of the resulting composites were evaluated, and the morphology and microstructure were investigated. The POM fibers provided significant mechanical reinforcement for the metakaolin-based geopolymer. The composites were optimized for flexural and compressive strength with respect to fiber content and fiber length. Compared to unreinforced geopolymer, the composites obtained an optimum improvement by approximate 150% in flexural strength and by almost 26% in compressive strength. Moreover, the longer POM fibers exhibit a better reinforcement effect on the geopolymer, resulting in a lower optimal fiber content for the composites to achieve the maximum mechanical data. The reinforcing mechanisms were discussed on the basis of morphological investigation and considered as a cumulative energy-dissipating effect by fiber pullout and orientation, fiber rupture, fiber debonding from the matrix, and fiber bridging within cracks. The geopolymeric composites also achieved a considerable reduction in friction coefficient and abrasion loss rate in the presence of POM fibers. Such an enhancement of tribological performance is ascribed to the formation of self-lubricating transfer films between the contact surfaces of composites against the steel counterpart.  相似文献

This article mainly investigated the length distributions of the alkali‐free short glass fibers in specimens and their effect on the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites. The results show that the initial length, addition level and feed way of the fibers have obvious effects on the length distributions of fibers in specimens, and thereby the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites. The main‐direction feed way has an intense shear action on the fibers in specimens. With the increase of the fiber content, the reinforcing effect of fibers on the tensile strength, flexural strength and flexural modulus of the composites is increased, while the impact strength is decreased first and then tends to be stable, and the strength factor (F) of the tensile strength to weld line is significantly reduced. The longer the fiber lengths in specimens are, the more obvious the reinforcing and toughening effects are. To some extent, with the increase of the fiber content, the storage modulus (E′) and loss modulus (E′′) of the specimens are increased, but the loss factor (Tan δ) is reduced. The effect of the fiber initial lengths on the heat‐degradation of composites is smaller than that of the fiber content. Meanwhile, adding fibers can improve the thermal stability of the composites, and this law is also confirmed by the heat deflection temperature (HDT) test. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Biodegradable composites of poly(butylene succinate‐co‐butylene adipate) (PBSA) reinforced by poly(lactic acid) (PLA) fibers were developed by hot compression and characterized by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analyzer, and tensile testing. The results show that PBSA and PLA are immiscible, but their interface can be improved by processing conditions. In particular, their interface and the resulting mechanical properties strongly depend on processing temperature. When the temperature is below 120 °C, the bound between PBSA and PLA fiber is weak, which results in lower tensile modulus and strength. When the processing temperature is higher (greater than 160 °C), the relaxation of polymer chain destroyed the molecular orientation microstructure of the PLA fiber, which results in weakening mechanical properties of the fiber then weakening reinforcement function. Both tensile modulus and strength of the composites increased significantly, in particular for the materials reinforced by long fiber. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this study, engineering thermoplastic composites were prepared from natural fiber blend–filled nylon 6. Natural fiber blend from a mixture of kenaf, flax, and hemp fibers were added to nylon 6 using melt mixing to produce compounded pellets. The natural fibers/ nylon6 composites with varying concentrations of natural fibers (from 5 to 20 wt%) were prepared by injection molding. The tensile and flexural properties of the nylon 6 composites were increased significantly with the addition of the natural fiber blend. The maximum strength and modulus of elasticity for the nylon 6 composites were achieved at a natural fiber blend weight fraction of 20%. The Izod impact strength of composites decreased with the incorporation of natural fibers without any surface treatments and coupling agent. The melt flow index (MFI) also decreased with increasing natural fiber blend loading. The results of tensile and flexural modulus of elasticity (FMOE) are in accordance with the rheological data from the MFI measurements. The increase in the tensile and flexural properties indicated that efficient bonding occurred between the natural fibers and nylon 6. No fiber pullout was observed during the scanning electron microscopic analysis of the fracture surfaces. The higher mechanical results with lower density demonstrate that a natural fiber blend can be used as a sufficient reinforcing material for low‐cost, eco‐friendly composites in the automotive industry and in other applications such as the building and construction industries, packaging, consumer products, etc.POLYM. Propropylene was reinforced with various concentrations of glass fiber (0, 10, 20, 28, and 35 percent by weight) and standard test samples were prepared by injection molding under identical conditions. The influence of fiber concentration on the morphology and mechanical properties was investigated using polarizing microscope, scanning electron microscope, Instron universal testing machine, etc. Tensile strength, tensile modulus, and flexural strength were found to increase with glass fiber content, while impact strength was reduced. These observed changes in mechanical properties were explained in terms of alterations in skin-core morphology, spherulite size, transcrystallinity, etc. The efficiency of reinforcement factor (K) was calculated for all the composites. It was found that K decreases with the increase of fiber concentration. This study attempts to correlate fiber concentration and polymer morphology with mechanical properties and the overall efficiency of reinforcement. This would help in optimizing the fiber content to prepare molded composites with desired mechanical properties.  相似文献
