In the present paper, friction and wear behaviors of a carbon fiber reinforced carbon–silicon carbide–titanium silicon carbide (C-SiC–Ti3SiC2) hybrid matrix composites fabricated by slurry infiltration and liquid silicon infiltration were studied for potential application as brake materials. The properties were compared with those of C/C-SiC composites. The composites containing Ti3SiC2 had not only higher friction stability coefficient but also much higher wear resistance than C/C-SiC composites. At an initial braking speed of 28 m/s under 0.8 MPa pressure, the weight wear rate of the composites containing 5 vol% Ti3SiC2 was 5.55 mg/cycle, which was only one-third of C/C-SiC composites. Self-lubricious film-like debris was formed on the composites containing Ti3SiC2, leading to the improvement of friction and wear properties. The effect of braking speed and braking pressure on the tribological properties of modified composites were investigated. The average friction coefficient was significantly affected by braking speed and braking pressure, but the wear rate was less affected by braking pressure.  相似文献

The carbon fabric composites filled with the particulates of nano-SiO2, nano-TiO2, and nano-CaCO3, respectively, were prepared by dip-coating of the carbon fabric in a phenolic resin containing the particulates to be incorporated and the successive curing. The friction and wear behaviors of the resulting carbon fabric composites sliding against AISI-1045 steel in a pin-on-disc configuration were evaluated on a Xuanwu-III high temperature friction and wear tester. The tensile strength and adhesion strength of the filled carbon fabric composites were determined on a DY35 universal materials test machine. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the unfilled and filled carbon fabric composites and the transfer films on the counterpart steel pins were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy, and the elemental plane distributions on the transfer films were analyzed with an energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDAX). It was found that the nano-particles as the fillers contributed to significantly improve the mechanical properties and wear-resistance of the carbon fabric. Nano-CaCO3 as the filler was the most effective in increasing the wear-resistance, while nano-SiO2 was the most effective in increasing the friction-reducing ability and mechanical properties. This was because the nano-particulates as the fillers contributed to enhance the bonding strength between the carbon fabric and the adhesive resin. Moreover, the friction and wear properties of the carbon fabric composites were closely dependent on the characteristics of the transfer films formed on the counterpart steel pin surfaces and on the environmental temperature as well. Namely, the differences in the wear-resistance of various filled carbon fabric composites were related to the differences of their transfer films on the counterpart steel pin surface. The wear rates of the composites at elevated temperature above 180 °C were much larger than that below 180 °C, which was attributed to the degradation and decomposition of the adhesive resin at excessively elevated temperature.  相似文献

In the present work, we report the processing and properties of WC–6 wt.% ZrO2 composites, densified using the pressureless sintering route. The densification of the WC–ZrO2 composites was carried out in the temperature range of 1500–1700 °C with varying time (1–3 h) in vacuum. The experimental results indicate that significantly high hardness of 22–23 GPa and moderate fracture toughness of ∼5 MPa m1/2 can be obtained with 2 mol% Y-stabilized ZrO2 sinter-additive, sintered at 1600 °C for 3 h. Furthermore, the friction and wear behavior of optimized WC–ZrO2 composite is investigated on a fretting mode I wear tester. The tribological results reveal that a moderate coefficient of friction in the range from 0.15 to 0.5 can be achieved with the optimised composite. An important observation is that a transition in friction and wear with load is noted. The dominant mechanisms of material removal appear to be tribochemical wear and spalling of tribolayer.  相似文献

Sliding friction and wear characteristics of three-dimensional (3-D) braided carbon fabric reinforced epoxy resin (C3D/EP) composites were investigated. Tests were performed on a MM200 tester under normal loads of 50, 150, and 250 N and velocities of 0.42 and 0.84 m/s. A quenched medium carbon steel with a hardness of HRC 52 was used as the counterpart material. The specific wear rate and the coefficient of friction were examined as a function of testing conditions (load, velocity, and sliding distance) and material parameters (fiber volume fraction and fiber–matrix bonding). The results showed that the coefficient of friction and the specific wear rate changed considerably during the running-in period and reached stable values at the steady wear stage. Fiber volume fraction and testing conditions (load and velocity) affected the wear more significantly than the friction. It was also found that fiber–matrix bonding had an impact on the friction and wear of the 3-D composites. Furthermore, the specific wear rate decreased with the increase in the product of load and velocity. Worn surfaces and debris were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and wear mechanisms were discussed in this study.  相似文献

The influence of diameter and content of Al2O3 particles on the tribological behaviors under fretting wear mode was investigated. The surface of PEEK composite and steel ball were examined by SEM and EDS, to identify the topography of wear scar and analyze the distribution of chemical elements in the friction counterparts, respectively. It can be found that the filling of Al2O3 powder improves the fretting wear resistance of PEEK composite. With the increase of Al2O3 diameter, the area of wear scar on specimen increases first and decreases afterward. However, the wear of composites increases monotonically with increasing Al2O3 content. Although the filling of 10 wt.% and 200 nm PTFE powder in PEEK makes the lowest wear of all specimens, no synergistic effect was found when Al2O3 and PTFE were filled into PEEK composite together. For the friction pair of PEEK composite and steel ball, abrasive wear and adhesive wear dominate the fretting wear mechanism during fretting. Thermal effect plays a very important role during fretting; thus the property of temperature resistance for polymer material would affect the wear degree on the surface of wear scar.  相似文献

Oxidation treatment with concentrated HNO3 was employed to the carbon fabric (CF) for various time intervals (30–180 min) to observe the effect of treatment on two simultaneous processes involved viz. improvement in its adhesion with the matrix and reduction of fiber strength which in turn is responsible for change in the performance properties of composites. Seven composites with untreated and acid treated CF were developed based on the polyetherimide (PEI) matrix and evaluated for adhesive wear properties under various loads (200–600 N) against mild steel disc. 90 min treated CF composite indicated the best tribological properties and showed 30% reduction in specific wear rate (K0) and 23% in coefficient of friction (μ) respectively at 600 N load. Treatment beyond this time proved detrimental for improvement in properties. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) showed increase in roughness with treatment time, while atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies indicated substantial increase in roughness value. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of worn surfaces supported the wear mechanisms and improvement in adhesion between fiber and matrix.  相似文献

Hierarchical porous PEEK self-lubricating composites were prepared by mold-leaching and vacuum melting process under high temperature. The tribological behaviors were investigated for the porous PEEK composite and the porous composite after incorporating micro-porogen (NaCl) and mesoporous titanium oxide whiskers. If only micro-porogen was incorporated, the lowest steady state specific wear rate was observed for PEEK composites filled with 30% NaCl. Based on this porous PEEK composite, the effects of mesoporous titanium oxide whiskers and non-perforated titanium oxide whiskers on the friction and wear properties of PEEK composites were studied. Results showed that nano-micro porous PEEK composites with 30 wt% micro-porogen and 5 wt% mesoporous titanium oxide whiskers reached the lowest friction coefficient and specific wear rate, which were recorded as 0.0194 and 2.135×10–16 m3/Nm under the load of 200 N. Compared with 15 wt% carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK composite which is widely used in industry, the wear resistance of the designed hierarchical porous PEEK composite increased by 41 times, showing outstanding wear resistance.  相似文献

Past studies with PTFE nanocomposites showed up to 600× improvements in wear resistance over unfilled PTFE with the addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles. Irregular shaped nanoparticles are used in this study to increase the mechanical entanglement of PTFE fibrils with the filler. The tribological properties of 1, 2, 5 and 10 wt.% filled samples are evaluated under a normal pressure and sliding speed of 6.3 MPa and 50.8 mm/s, respectively. The wear resistance was found to improve 3000× over unfilled PTFE with the addition of 1 wt.% nanoparticles. The 5 wt.% sample had the lowest steady state wear rate of K = 1.3 × 10−7 mm3/N m and the lowest steady friction coefficient with μ = 0.21.  相似文献

The friction and wear of short glass fiber reinforced polyamide 12 (PA12) were investigated. The behavior of the fibers on a sliding surface and their effect on the friction and wear were studied in terms of the amount and orientation of the fibers in the composite. Results showed that the friction level and wear resistance were strongly affected by the fiber content, and glass fiber patches produced on the sliding surface played important roles in the wear resistance of the composite. The optimum fiber content for the best wear resistance of the PA12 composite was approximately 30 wt.% and higher fiber contents had no added effect on the wear amount. The applied load also strongly affected the wear resistance due to the increase in temperature at the sliding interface, and an increase in rapid wear was observed when the interface temperature increased above the glass transition temperature of PA12. On the other hand, the fiber orientation had less effect on the friction and wear of the composite compared to the fiber content and applied load. Based on the behavior of glass fibers on the sliding surface and wear debris analysis, the wear mechanism of the PA12 composite is discussed.  相似文献

This article discusses the mechanical performance of alumina nanoparticles and randomly distributed short glass/carbon fiber-reinforced hybrid composites through microhardness and wear test. The open mold casting method was adapted to prepare the test coupons. The wear and friction behavior of composites sliding against hardened ground EN 32 steel in a pin-on-disc configuration is evaluated on a wear and friction tester. The microhardness properties of the neat epoxy, alumina nanoparticles, and alumina nanoparticle–embedded glass/carbon fiber–reinforced hybrid composites were determined. The morphology of the worn composites was analyzed with a scanning electron microscope. It was found that the particles as fillers contributed significantly to improve the mechanical properties and wear resistance of the polymer composites. This is because the fillers contributed to enhance the bonding strength between the fiber and the epoxy resin. Moreover, the wear and friction resistance of the glass/carbon fiber composites was increased by increasing the filler weight in the composite materials.  相似文献

Resistance to wear is an important factor in design and selection of structural components in relative motion against a mating surface. The present work deals with studies on fretting wear behavior of in situ nano-Al3Ti reinforced Al–Ti–Si amorphous/nanocrystalline matrix composite, processed by high pressure (8 GPa) sintering at room temperature, 350, 400 or 450 °C. The wear experiments were carried out in gross slip fretting regime to investigate the performance of this composite against Al2O3 at ambient temperature (22–25 °C) and humidity (50–55%). The highest resistance to fretting wear has been observed in the composites sintered at 400 °C. The fretting wear involves oxidation of Al3Ti particles in the composite. A continuous, smooth and protective tribolayer is formed on the worn surface of the composite sintered at 400 °C, while fragmentation and spallation leads to a rougher surface and greater wear in the composite sintered at 450 °C.  相似文献

The non-lubricated, sliding friction and wear behavior of Ti3Si(Al)C2 and SiC-reinforced Ti3Si(Al)C2 composites against AISI 52100 bearing steel ball were investigated using a ball-on-flat, reciprocating tribometer at room temperature. The contact load was varied from 5 to 20 N. For monolithic Ti3Si(Al)C2, high friction coefficients between 0.61 and 0.90 and wear rates between 1.79 × 10−3 and 2.68 × 10−3 mm3 (N m)−1 were measured. With increasing SiC content in the composites, both the friction coefficients and the wear rates were significantly decreased. The friction coefficients reduced to a value between 0.38 and 0.50, and the wear rates to between 2.64 × 10−4 and 1.93 × 10−5 mm3 (N m)−1 when the SiC content ranged from 10 to 30 vol.%. The enhanced wear resistance of Ti3Si(Al)C2 is mainly attributed to the facts that the hard SiC particles inhibit the plastic deformation and fracture of the soft matrix, the oxide debris lubricate the counterpair, and the wear mode converts from adhesive wear to abrasive wear during dry sliding.  相似文献

Aluminium alloys, reinforced with ceramic particles or fibres, are desired materials in high performance applications due to their superior properties. In this paper, gel-cast Al2O3 foams were pressurelessly infiltrated using an Al–8 wt.% Mg alloy. The wear rates of the alloy and the Al(Mg)/Al2O3 interpenetrating composites were tested under dry sliding conditions; effects of Al2O3 foam density and cell size on the composite wear resistance under different loads and sliding distances were investigated. A ‘ploughing’ mechanism was observed in all the composites after an initial 250 m sliding distance, whilst the composites with the higher foam density show a ‘two-stage’ wear with sliding distance. The decrease in the wear rate in the second stage in the latter is attributed to an Al2O3 network protruding out of the worn surface, which protects the direct wear of the Al(Mg) alloy by the counter ball. Within the range studied, a larger cell size is preferred for better wear resistance.  相似文献

Dry sliding wear of Al–4Cu–xTiB2 (x = 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 wt.%) in situ composites have been studied in the peak-aged condition using a pin-on-disc wear testing machine at different loads. The composites were prepared by the reaction of a mixture of K2TiF6 and KBF4 salts with molten alloy. The results indicate that TiB2 particles markedly improve the wear performance of the Al–4Cu alloy. The wear resistance increases with increase in the amount of TiB2. The load bearing capacity of the alloy during wear increases in presence of TiB2 particles. Study of the wear surfaces and debris of both alloy and composites using the scanning electron microscope suggests that the improvement in wear resistance is mainly due to the formation of finer debris.  相似文献

AgNPs/PMA hybrid nanocomposite materials with different Ag loadings have been synthesized using a simple chemical route assisted by UV irradiation. The hybrid composites were characterized by means of SEM and TEM, UV–vis spectroscopy and XPS. The as synthesized hybrid samples, composed of small Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) embedded within the PMA (poly-methacrylic-acid) matrix, have been used to modify the working electrode of disposable screen printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs). It has been observed that hybrid composite with the lowest Ag loading forms dendritic silver structures on the surface of working electrode, whereas at higher loadings massive structures were formed. The electrocatalytic properties of the AgNPs/PMA/SPCEs were investigated toward the reduction of nitrate at neutral pH. Based on these modified electrodes, both voltammetric and amperometric sensors were developed for the electrochemical sensing of nitrate. Voltammetric sensor showed a wide linear range (0–20 mM) and high sensitivity (130 μA mM−1 cm−2).  相似文献

Nanometre SiO2 filled-polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composite blocks with different filler proportions were prepared by compression moulding. Their friction and wear properties were investigated on a block-on-ring machine by running a plain carbon steel (AISI 1045 steel) ring against the composite block. The morphologies of the wear traces and the transfer film were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that nanometre SiO2 filled-PEEK exhibited considerably lower friction coefficient and wear rate in comparison with pure PEEK. The lowest wear rate was obtained with the composite containing 7.5 wt.% SiO2. The SEM pictures of the wear traces indicated that with the frictional couple of carbon steel ring/composite block (fillec with 7.5 wt.% filler), a thin, uniform, and tenacious transfer film was formed on the ring surface. It was inferred that the transfer film contributed largely to the decreased friction coefficient and wear rate of the filled PEEK composites.  相似文献

NiAl, NiAl–Cr–Mo alloy and NiAl matrix composites with addition of oxides (ZnO/CuO) were fabricated by powder metallurgy route. It was found that some new phases (such as NiZn3, Cu0.81Ni0.19 and Al2O3) are formed during the fabrication process due to a high-temperature solid state reaction. Tribological behavior was studied from room temperature to 1000 °C on an HT-1000 ball-on-disk high temperature tribometer. The results indicated that NiAl had high friction coefficient and wear rate at elevated temperatures, while incorporation of Cr(Mo) not only enhanced mechanical properties evidently but also improved high temperature tribological properties. Among the sintered materials, NiAl matrix composite with addition of ZnO showed the lowest wear rate at 1000 °C, while CuO addition into NiAl matrix composite exhibited the self-lubricating performance and the best tribological properties at 800 °C.  相似文献

A new type Cu–La2O3 composite was fabricated by internal oxidation method using powder metallurgy. Sliding wear behavior of the Cu–La2O3 composites was studied by using a pin-on-disk wear tester under dry sliding conditions with or without electrical current, rubbing against GCr15 type bearing steel disk at a constant sliding speed of 20 m/s. The influence of varying applied load and electrical current was investigated. The worn surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to determine the wear mechanisms. The results showed the Cu–La2O3 composites had an electrical conductivity of 81.9% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard, 100% IACS = 58 MS/m) and a hardness of HV105. The wear rate of the Cu–La2O3 composite pins increased with the increase in the electrical current at high sliding speed. The main wear mechanisms of the Cu–La2O3 composites were found to be adhesive wear, abrasive wear and arc erosion.  相似文献

The tribological properties of NiCr-40 wt% Al2O3 (NC40A) cermet-based composites containing SrSO4 and other lubricant (graphite, MoS2 and Ag) against alumina ball were evaluated to identify their self-lubrication mechanisms from room temperature to 800 °C. The composites demonstrated distinct improvements in effectively reducing friction and wear, as compared to NC40A cermet. The best results were observed for NC40A–10SrSO4–10Ag composite, which exhibited satisfactory reproducibility of friction coefficient over a wide temperature range (200–800 °C) through high temperature cyclic friction tests due to the formation of synergistic lubricating films SrAl4O7, NiCr2O4 and Ag on the contact surface.  相似文献

Dry sliding wear behaviour of A356–TiB2 composites in T6 condition was tested using a pin-on-disc wear testing machine. The composites were prepared by the reaction of a mixture of K2TiF6 and KBF4 salts with molten alloy. The wear tests were conducted at normal loads of 19.6–78.4 N and a sliding speed of 1 ms?1. A detailed SEM study of wear surface and debris was carried out to substantiate the wear results. The results indicate that wear rate of the composites is a strong function of TiB2 content rather than overall hardness of the composite. The role of Si and TiB2 particles towards the overall mechanism has been discussed.  相似文献
