A 3D CFD model of the agglomeration of droplets and particles in a counter-current spray-drying process was developed and verified. An original discrete phase model was elaborated, with an agglomeration module taking into account hydrodynamic segregation of particles, droplet coalescence, and droplet shrinkage for accurate calculations of mass balance of the discrete phase. The characteristic drying curves were applied to the model of particle moisture evaporation, which included the coupling of particle agglomeration with heat, mass, and momentum transfer between the discrete and continuous phases. Two agglomeration zones were observed in the tower: wet particle agglomeration in the atomization zone, and “dry agglomeration” above the air inlets, due to the intensive mixing of particle streams. A comparison of the calculated particle size distributions and experimental data obtained from particle dynamics analysis (PDA) measurements proves the accuracy of the developed methodology. The elaborated model allows the final PSD of the powder in the spray towers to be predicted.  相似文献

A steady-state, three-dimensional, multiphase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of a pilot-plant countercurrent spray drying tower is carried out to study the drying behavior of detergent slurry droplets. The software package ANSYS Fluent is employed to solve the heat, mass, and momentum transfer between the hot gas and the polydispersed droplets/particles using the Eulerian–Lagrangian approach. The continuous-phase turbulence is modeled using the differential Reynolds stress model. The drying kinetics is modeled using a single-droplet drying model, which is incorporated into the CFD code using user-defined functions (UDFs). Heat loss from the insulated tower wall to the surrounding is modeled by considering thermal resistances due to deposits on the inside surface, wall, insulation, and outside convective film. For the particle–wall interaction, the restitution coefficient is specified as a constant value as well as a function of particle moisture content. It is found that the variation in the value of restitution coefficient with moisture causes significant changes in the velocity, temperature, and moisture profiles of the gas as well as the particles. Overall, a reasonably good agreement is obtained between the measured and predicted powder temperature, moisture content, and gas temperature at the bottom and top outlets of the tower; considering the complexity of the spray drying process, simplifying assumptions made in both the CFD and droplet drying models and the errors associated with the measurements.  相似文献

Spray drying is an extensively used technology in process engineering for receiving small particles by rapid moisture evaporation from a spray of droplets. This contribution summarizes achievements and results of the comprehensive scientific research on multi-scale multiphase modeling of transport phenomena in spray-drying processes undertaken by our research group: (1) study of particle formation on the scale of an individual droplet; (2) modeling and simulation of droplet–droplet and particle–particle collisions in a spray; (3) study of gas-spray mixing; (4) 2D and 3D study of spray drying by an innovative multi-scale simulation tool coupled to a commercial CFD software. The proposed multi-scale multiphase model of transport phenomena in a spray-drying process has been developed based on a thorough analysis of previously published experimental and theoretical works. The content of this paper will be useful for both academia and industry; e.g., pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, ceramics, materials, nutrition, and other applications of spray drying.  相似文献

The paper presents concluding results of extensive experimental and theoretical research on confident CFD modeling of spray drying. An earlier developed experimental method to determine spray-drying kinetics in a lab scale allowed us to find a critical material moisture content and to determine generalized spray-drying curves. The generalized drying curves, identical in shape in the laboratory and pilot plant units, were used in the CFD model of spray drying process. Extensive simulations for spray drying of 10, 30, and 50% of initial solid content of maltodextrin proved high accuracy of the predictions of discrete (particle size distribution, particle moisture content, particle velocity, spray temperature) and continuous-phase parameters (gas temperature and humidity). Maximum error of the predictions of discrete-phase parameters was on the level of 20%, which is probably close to the current capacity of the CFD technique for modeling of spray-drying process. Comparison of experimental measurements and theoretical results shows that incorporation of realistic spray-drying kinetics into the CFD model and correct definition of initial drying and atomization parameters enable reliable simulations of spray-drying process.  相似文献

A one-dimensional numerical model for a detergent slurry drying process in a counter-current spray drying tower is developed for the prediction of the gas and droplet/particle temperature profiles within the tower. The model accommodates droplets/particles over a range of sizes. A semi-empirical slurry droplet drying model is integrated with a counter-current tower simulation based on mass, energy and particulate phase momentum balances in order to calculate the drying rate and the particle residence time within the tower. The coupled first order ordinary differential equations for the two phases are solved numerically using the iterative shooting method in an algorithm developed within MATLAB. The predictions of the numerical model are compared with industrial pilot plant data. The results are found to vary significantly with the specified size distribution of the droplets. Despite the simplicity of the model in ignoring the coalescence, agglomeration, wall deposition and re-entrainment, the model gives reasonable agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

Advances in the study of the rate processes in spray drying have helped improve product quality. Single droplet drying (SDD) is an established method for monitoring the drying kinetics and morphological changes of an isolated droplet under a controlled drying environment, mimicking the droplet convective drying process in spray drying. To enhance particle quality requires understanding of both the particle formation process and knowledge of how different particle properties are affected by the drying conditions used. The latest development in the SDD technique enables evaluation of these aspects by incorporating a dissolution test in the drying experiment. The experiment is realized by attaching a solvent droplet to a dried/semi-dried single particle in situ and then video-recording the resultant morphological changes. Some of the particle (e.g., crystallinity) properties obtained under different drying conditions can be modelled using the measured droplet drying kinetics. This paper reviews the applications of SDD experiments in measuring the drying kinetics and monitoring the droplet morphological changes during drying. Some examples of extending the glass filament SDD technique to examine particle functionalities are discussed. SDD experiments are shown to be a powerful tool for particle engineering due to its ability to study both the external convective transport process of a single droplet and to understand the different particle functionalities of the resultant single dried particle.  相似文献

CFD simulation is used to study wall deposition and agglomeration phenomena commonly encountered in industrial spray dryers. This paper initially provides a comparison of two drying kinetics models: Characteristic Drying Curve (CDC) and Reaction Engineering Approach (REA). Comparisons are made with experimental data with application to carbohydrate droplet drying obtained from past workers. These models were then extrapolated to actual drying conditions to assess their performance. The REA model predicts the progressive reduction in drying rate better than the CDC model for the carbohydrate droplets. A modified CDC model incorporating a convex falling rate produced better agreement than the conventional linear falling rate model. Further analysis showed that the REA model can be extended to simulate the particle surface moisture which may affect the agglomeration process. The proposed concept was compared with reported simulation results from a diffusion model which showed reasonable fit with data.  相似文献

A model for the drying of a single solution droplet into a solid, dense particle is presented and simulations are made to achieve a more fundamental understanding of the single droplet drying process relevant in connection with spray drying processes. Model predictions of drying behaviour are compared to data for the drying of aqueous solutions of maltodextrin DE 15 and trehalose from experiments conducted using an ultrasonic levitator. Model predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data, indicating that the model describes the most important physical phenomena of the process.  相似文献

利用群体粒数衡算(population balance,PB)计算机模拟和实验研究了甘露醇水溶液的喷雾干燥过程中液滴的粒度分布的变化规律。液滴干燥过程中的颗粒粒度的萎缩速率,在群体粒数衡算模型中描述为液滴的逆(或负)生长项,通过单个液滴反应动力学方法(reaction engineering approach,REA)获得。基于单个液滴干燥的反应工程方法模型REA和群体粒数衡算模型PB集成建立了PBREA模型。PBREA 模型的求解是通过高分辨率数值方法。本文模拟研究了不同工况下,不同粒径液滴的干燥时间、液滴平均含湿量以及液滴粒度分布随时间的变化。结果显示,液滴粒径越大,干燥时间越长,模型预测的颗粒平均粒径为实验值的1.0~1.5倍,粒度分布跨度是实验值的0.61~0.89倍。模拟误差主要来源于液滴及颗粒粒径分布统计精度、单个静止液滴与群体运动液滴干燥的差异、热导率及扩散系数是经验值3个方面。在使用Buchi 290 小型喷雾干燥仪进行的实验中,使用了图像采集和分析方法得到了液滴及颗粒的数密度分布,并和模拟结果做了对比。结果表明该模型可以有效地预测喷雾干燥过程中干燥颗粒的平均粒度及分布跨度。  相似文献

This article presents the findings of a numerical simulation model of the spray-drying process in a two-stage horizontal chamber design with the aid of a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model. The model describes heat, mass, and momentum transfer between two phases; namely, a continuous gas phase and a discrete phase of droplets (or particles), using the finite volume method. In this study, a new two-dimensional horizontal spray dryer (HSD) geometry is considered as a pilot study into the spray-drying process in this novel chamber configuration. The tested model is able to predict some important features of the spray-drying process, such as air flow patterns indicating recirculation zones and particle trajectory plots. Some performance parameters for spray drying, such as the rate of evaporation, average volumetric heat and mass transfer rates, etc., are calculated and discussed. This two-stage drying process especially applicable for the horizontal spray dryer (HSD) model is investigated and modeled. The bottom wall of the HSD is assumed to be a shallow fluid bed used for second stage drying. In this article, the fluid bed drying conditions are changed and compared. The drying within the fluid bed itself is not modeled in this study, however. It is shown that the particle residence time is higher when the fluid bed is included. The drying performance of this two-stage horizontal spray dryer is expected to be better than that of a single-stage dryer.  相似文献

Abstract

The article presents the results of the experiments of gas-admixing foam spray drying microencapsulation of oil in co-current spray drying tower. The introduction of a foaming gas resulted in a decrease of encapsulation efficiency: for high foaming gas/liquid ratio (GLR) 6.43·10?3 kg/kg and Tair,0=215?°C by over 50% relative to the non-foaming process due to damage of the microcapsule structure and leakage of the oil phase to the particle surface. For moderate drying temperatures and GLR, 80% of microencapsulation efficiency might be achieved with simultaneous control of selected product properties like apparent and bulk density or angle of repose. Many studies have been carried out on using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to explore spray-drying phenomena. However, due to the complexity of the drying process in a conventional spray dryer, including the wide droplet size distribution, complicated particle trajectory, and difficulty in taking online measurements, validation of the computational codes or the models remains a challenging task. In this study, experimental conditions employed in a more defined spray-drying condition, published recently on the spray drying of mono-disperse skim milk droplets in a vertical cylindrical chamber, are simulated using ANSYS FLUENT. We have examined the effects of droplet-dispersion patterns on the drying results and found ways to incorporate more practical shrinkage models into the code to make simulations more realistic. Through a comparison with the relevant experimental results on 10~50 wt% skim milk published recently by the same group, we have identified a few areas that urgently need more detailed research. Using the revised sets of codes established here, we simulated skim milk droplets (with a uniform size between 180 μm to 220 μm) spray dried by 90°C to 180°C hot-air streams. The quantitative drying history data predicted by our new model would help ensure better understanding of the system.  相似文献

Mono-disperse droplet generation and subsequent drying in a spray-drying chamber, i.e., mono-disperse droplet spray dryer (MDDSD), provides a better-defined “flight experience” for liquid droplets. The related particle formation can be investigated more easily than that in the usual poly-disperse droplet spray dryer (PDDSD). Previously, skim milk, which is of high protein and high lactose content and is one of the two main dairy fluids that are processed into powder form for consumer markets, was subjected to this kind of investigation in Australia. Here, whole milk, which is the other main dairy fluid, has been spray-dried in a MDDSD set-up at Xiamen University (China). Because the initial droplet size is uniform, measurable, and the particle morphology after drying is consistent, it was possible to investigate the initial solids content effect upon shrinkage and inlet air temperature effect upon shrinkage. In contrast to what had been found for skim milk particles, the formation of the fat-containing (whole milk) particles does not follow the perfect shrinkage model as the skim milk does. This work has improved our quantitative understanding of the whole milk drying process. A fundamental analysis invoked with a modified one-dimensional modeling of spray drying has been given that has shown some further insight about the process.  相似文献

In this study, a novel sampling method was established to study changes in the activity of lactic acid bacteria during spray drying. Before spray drying, a sampling device with a refrigerant and a magnet was pre-cooled and positioned in a spray-drying tower. Carbonyl iron powder (CIP) was added to the drying media to increase the sampling mass by the magnetic effect. During drying, a temperature sensor measured the particle contact temperature. After drying, the sample in the sampling device was taken out to analyze the characteristics, including the mass, water content, and bacteria livability in the sample. The sampling device and method were optimized with a sampling cup with a depth of 3.5?cm (for contact temperatures below 79.1°C) or 5?cm (for contact temperatures below 89.1°C). The ratio of CIP to reconstituted skim milk (RSM) was 1:10, and RSM concentration was not lower than 20% (w/w). This method was then applied to spray drying of Lactobacillus bulgaricus sp1.1. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that 2?mL of sterile water placed in the sampling cup prior to drying resulted in a more accurate measurement of cell viability. This sampling method can be used in practical spray drying applications for biological materials without using a special instrument or drying tower.  相似文献

均一粒径液滴喷雾干燥塔(MDSD)在生产均匀尺寸颗粒产品中发挥着较大优势,进一步优化其干燥过程操作尤为重要。集成离散相(DPM)和反应工程法(REA)干燥方法,通过耦合分散室和主干燥室模型,本研究开发了完整的MDSD三维计算流体力学模型。并系统探究了在干燥过程中分散气旋流、热空气旋流以及二者共同旋流对颗粒运动和最终干燥效果的影响。模拟结果表明,在30°入射角下加入旋流效果最优。同时引入分散室和干燥室旋流后发现,同向旋流比反向旋流带来的干燥效果提升2%,更比无旋流操作下的干燥效果提升30%。欲达到同样的干燥效果,引入同向旋流,塔身可缩短近12%。  相似文献

This work investigates the effect of maltodextrin addition on the drying kinetics and the stickiness during spray drying of tomato pulp in dehumidified air. A pilot-scale spray dryer was employed for the spray-drying process. The modification made to the original design consisted in connecting the spray dryer inlet air intake to an absorption air dryer. Twenty-seven different experiments were conducted varying the dextrose equivalent (DE) of the maltodextrin, the ratio (tomato pulp solids)/(maltodextrin solids), and the inlet air temperature. Data for the residue remaining on the walls were gathered. Furthermore, the effect of maltodextrin addition on the drying kinetics and the stickiness of the product was investigated using a numerical simulation of the spray-drying process modeled with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Fluent. The code was used to determine the droplet moisture content and temperature profiles during the spray-drying experiments conducted in this work. The stickiness was determined by comparing the droplet temperature with its surface layer glass transition temperature (Tg ). The Tg was determined using a weighted mean rule based on the moisture content profiles calculated by the CFD code and the experimental data of Tg , which were obtained for the different tomato pulp and maltodextrin samples and fitted to the Gordon and Taylor model.  相似文献

Spray‐dried mannitol is a potential lactose replacement in pharmaceutical formulations, yet the drying behavior of individual mannitol droplets within the spray chamber has not been fully understood. This work explored the drying characteristics of mannitol by employing the reaction engineering approach (REA) in data analysis. A glass filament single droplet drying technique was used to monitor the changes in droplet temperature, mass, and diameter. The drying kinetics data obtained clearly demonstrated the droplet “wet‐bulb” period, the crust formation, and the crystallization phenomena. The master activation‐energy curves developed from REA modeling responded sensitively to varying drying temperatures, which could have led to different crystallization events. The deviation of these plots from the expected norms that do not encounter a phase change was used effectively to discern the physics involved. Spray drying is the primary method for manufacturing of food powders from liquids. Optimal design and optimization of spray drying operations at the fundamental level require both modeling of the drying characteristics of a single droplet and dryer wide simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). An accurate yet simple model for drying of a single droplet, which does not require solution of partial differential equation, is ideal input for CFD simulations. The reaction engineering approach (REA) is shown to be appropriate in this regard. It has been successfully used for prediction of skim and whole milk droplet drying behavior under various drying conditions. In this study, an aqueous lactose solution was dried in droplet form and the appropriate REA model parameters obtained. The change of diameter of the droplet during drying was measured experimentally and compared with the model results.  相似文献
