A non-lithographic process of rapidly fabricating metallic micromold masters for the manufacture of disposable polymer microfluidic devices is presented in this paper. The developed technique exploits the precision material removal capabilities of industrial lasers to cut accurate profiles of microfeatures (e.g., liquid flow microchannels, reservoirs, passive micromixers) from thin metallic sheets. The machined micropatterns are then laser welded onto a metal substrate to form the final functional mold master. Multiple versions of the functional device are replicated from the assembled master by either soft molding polydimethylsiloxane or hot embossing polymethyl methacrylate. Several metallic micromold masters and polymer replicas are tested for dimensional accuracy and surface roughness to verify the developed microfabrication process. 相似文献

The miniaturization of parts and components plays an important role in today’s economy, enabling the design and production of new and highly sophisticated technology in various industrial fields, such as medical, bio-chemistry, automotive, and telecommunications. Nowadays, production technology faces the challenge to manufacture small components within tight tolerances, yet, which still remain economical in large lots. In order to successfully harness this task, separating processes have been fitted to suit the needs for micro mold manufacturing and were combined with a subsequent injection-molding process to satisfy the need for large-scale production with a vast variety of possible materials. Hereafter, the scope lies on the production technology for micro mold manufacturing, namely, micro milling, micro electro discharge machining (micro EDM), and micro laser ablation. Micro electro discharge machining (micro EDM) is a feasible way to manufacture micro structures and has potential application in advanced industrial fields. For the realization of micro EDM, it is necessary to pay careful attention to its equipment design and the development of process techniques. The present status of research and development of micro EDM equipment and process techniques is overviewed. A micro electro discharge machine incorporated with an inchworm type of micro feed mechanism is introduced, and a micro electro discharge machine for drilling micro holes suitable to industrial use is also introduced. Some of the machining experiments carried out on the micro EDM prototypes are shown and the feasibility of the micro EDM technology to practical use is discussed. 相似文献
