Economic model predictive control (EMPC) is a model-based control scheme that integrates process control and economic optimization, which can potentially allow for time-varying operating policies to maximize economic performance. The manner in which an EMPC operates a process to optimize economics depends on the process dynamics, which are fixed by the process design. This raises the question of how process and EMPC designs interact. Works which have addressed process and control design interactions for steady-state operation have sought to simultaneously develop process designs and control law parameters to find the most profitable way to operate a process that is able to prevent process constraints from being violated and to optimize capital costs in the presence of disturbances. Because EMPC has the potential to operate a process in a transient fashion, this work first focuses on how EMPC and process design interact in the absence of disturbances. Using small-scale process examples, we seek to understand the fundamental nature of the interactions between EMPC and process design, including how these interactions can impact computational complexity of the controller and the design procedure. We subsequently utilize the insights gained to suggest controller design variables which might be considered as decision variables for a simultaneous process and control design problem when disturbances are considered.

Business process design is an integral part of e-business engineering. Given that e-business models usually involve a wide
range of business processes across different business functions with complex activities, events, and documents, process design
for e-business is a very challenging task. Although various process reference models (PRMs) have been developed to provide
guidelines for process design, research on leveraging multiple PRMs to support process design for e-business has been scant.
In this paper, we demonstrate that the diverse process design requirements in e-business are best satisfied by utilizing multiple
PRMs via a case study. Then, we propose a collaborative approach grounded in knowledge management theory to integrating multiple
process reference models to better support process design in e-business. We equip the integrated process repository with a
set of novel features based on Web 2.0 technologies to enhance its utility, efficiency, and quality for process design support.
A prototype system is developed and user experiments are conducted to evaluate the system.

A new approach to process optimal design in non-isothermal, non-steady metal forming is presented. In this approach, an optimal design problem is formulated on the basis of an integrated thermo-mechanical finite element process model so as to treat diverse process parameters, either thermal or mechanical, as the design variables to be optimized, and a derivative based approach is adopted for conducting optimization. Described in detail are the integrated process model, a formulation for process optimal design, and the schemes for the evaluation of design sensitivity, in particular, a scheme for reflecting the effect of remeshing on design sensitivity. The validity of the schemes for the evaluation of design sensitivity is examined by performing a numerical test. Also examined is the integrated process model regarding its capability of predicting defect formation, through comparison with experimental observations. Then, the proposed optimal design technique is applied to process optimization in non-isothermal backward extrusion of a titanium alloy, with emphasis on preventing defect formation.

To support the design process fully from preliminary to detailed design stages in a natural way, a computer-integrated design system is needed. In early design stages more than one design alternatives are considered as possible solutions. The representation of design alternatives must be uniform and unbiased to be equally treated. In this study, an entity-based approach has been adopted to develop product and process models for representing design alternatives, which is more desirable for top–down design process because it allows high-level abstraction in representing design information and design activities. The entity-based approach has several benefits: (1) a unified representation of design alternatives; (2) a consistent development of product and process models based on the entity-based concepts; and (3) an easy integration of the product and process models. The work toward product and process models for structural design presented in this paper is a useful step toward integrated computer-aided design systems.

The design process that spans the gap between the requirements acquisition process and the implementation process, in which the basic architecture of a system is defined, and functions are allocated to software, hardware, and human agents. is studied. The authors call this process composite system design. The goal is an interactive model of composite system design incorporating deficiency-driven design, formal analysis, incremental design and rationalization, and design reuse. They discuss knowledge representations and reasoning techniques that support these goals for the product (composite system) that they are designing, and for the design process. To evaluate the model, the authors report on its use to reconstruct the design of two existing composite systems rationally

Process modeling is an important design practice in organizational improvement projects. In this paper, we examine the design of business process diagrams in contexts where novice analysts only have basic design tools such as paper and pencils available, and little to no understanding of formalized modeling approaches. Based on a quasi-experimental study with 89 BPM students, we identify five distinct process design archetypes ranging from textual to hybrid and graphical representation forms. We examine the quality of the designs and identify which representation formats enable an analyst to articulate business rules, states, events, activities, temporal and geospatial information in a process model. We found that the quality of the process designs decreases with the increased use of graphics and that hybrid designs featuring appropriate text labels and abstract graphical forms appear well-suited to describe business processes. We further examine how process design preferences predict formalized process modeling ability. Our research has implications for practical process design work in industry as well as for academic curricula on process design.
