Corporations of varying sizes and operations within the construction industry acclaim the contribution of project management applications that assist in business and operational practices. An integrated intelligent construction management application that enables process modeling and algorithmic analysis of construction process planning, interacts with a mainframe-based automated relational database system, and drives the project sequencing, scheduling, decision making and change management processes can introduce dramatic speed, simplicity, accuracy, and collaboration into existing project planning practices. Several research organizations and academic fraternities in concert with industry participation are focusing on the development of such futuristic tools as described above. However, evidence of such computing applications being used by the industry is minimal and a number of reasons have been cited by researchers for this. This study, through a review of the genesis, evolution, and future of computing applications in construction followed by an industry-wide survey, aims to study whether or not concurrent research agendas in construction information technology are truly sustainable from the industry’s perspective.  相似文献

A longitudinal study compared the reactions of executive-level and middle managers prior to a large-scale downsizing, during initial and final phases, and following the downsizing. Compared with executives, middle managers perceived greater job insecurity, were more likely to use escape coping, and reported lower job performance and higher levels of health symptoms. Over time, both executives and middle managers reported a decline in perceived threat of job loss but an increase in sense of powerlessness, a decrease in the use of control-oriented coping strategies, and reduced job performance in the initial phase of downsizing. Although less so, executive-level managers were also adversely affected by the downsizing, suggesting that this group should be included in stress management interventions. Using behavioral competencies to influence human resource management decisions is gaining popularity in business organizations. This study identifies the core competencies associated with the construction management role and, further, develops a predictive model to inform human resource selection and development decisions within large construction organizations. A range of construction managers took part in behavioral event interviews where staff were asked to recount critical management incidents, decisions, and actions from which their key competencies could be identified. By delineating the sample according to their levels of performance measured against a range of role-specific performance criteria, the competencies defining superior management performance could be determined. These were then used to construct a logistic regression model from which a project manager’s performance can be predicated. The validated results reveal that “self-control” and “team leadership” are the most predictive behaviors of effective project management performance within the framework of the model. The paper explores the potential role and application of the framework to underpin human resource management decision making with regards to recruitment, performance management, succession planning, and resource allocation.  相似文献

Introduces this issues of Consulting Psychology Journal. As guest editor, I have invited contributors who are deeply involved in organizational change, some as consultants, others as educators and researchers. The articles in this issue present a broad range of perspectives, each offering some special insight to the issues at hand. Paul Winum and colleagues describe a model of organization change, along with suggestions and guidelines to facilitate this process. Daryl Conner and Linda Hoopes characterize the significance of "resilience" in individuals, teams, and organizations as they face constant change. Arthur Freedman, in contrast, captures the undiscussable side of transformation, how the congestion and compression of multiple changes can lead to resistance and limited impact. It is also essential that change management approaches be sensitive to the organization and the intervention. Robert Quinn and Lynda St. Clair, building on the competing values framework, present a contingency model of the organization that helps change agents recognize the appropriate types of interventions to consider. Ben Schneider, Karen Holcombe, and Susan White explain why some organizations develop a climate for service that gives them competitive advantage over others; they also provide some steps organizations need to take in order to change in this direction. Reviews the book, Technologies nouvelles et aspects psychologiques edited by Larocque, Boulard, Fabi, Larouche, and et Rondeau (1987). The following review is from a book including a few English chapters, but mostly written in French. The intention in publishing this English review by Natalie Kishchuk is to make French publications better known to readers of both languages. The book seems mistitled--only four chapters out of twelve touch more than very tangentially on new technologies (those by Larouche, Fischer, David-MacNeil, and Laville). Given that the book contains proceedings of the fourth annual conference of the Association de psychologie du travail de langue francaise, which had the theme "Les conflits générés par les environnements en évolution: aspects culturels et dynamiques," it is not surprising that most of the chapters in fact focus on organizational change processes. In sum, this book is probably best viewed as a collection of discrete readings loosely organized around some general organizational themes, rather than as a summary of the state of knowledge about the psychological implications of technological change. Although there are interesting and novel ideas contained in many of the chapters, the book as a whole, being such a mélange of styles and approaches, is less successful than one would have hoped. The author examined gender roles among midlife managers over a 4-year period and the effects of career experiences. The findings supported a conceptualization of personality as relatively enduring but still open to change. Masculinity and femininity demonstrated differential stability and absolute stability, except in the case of women's femininity. Its magnitude decreased. At the same time, income change, promotion, and having a protégé were associated with increased masculinity and income change with increased femininity. A new child also meant increased masculinity for men. Furthermore, income change, promotion, turnover, being mentored, and having a protégé affected the relative placements of managers' scores over time. Many of the effects were different for men and women. The findings have important implications for adult development in the workplace. This study examined the role of information, efficacy, and 3 stressors in predicting adjustment to organizational change. Participants were 589 government employees undergoing an 18-month process of regionalization. To examine if the predictor variables had long-term effects on adjustment, the authors assessed psychological well-being, client engagement, and job satisfaction again at a 2-year follow-up. At Time 1, there was evidence to suggest that information was indirectly related to psychological well-being, client engagement, and job satisfaction, via its positive relationship to efficacy. There also was evidence to suggest that efficacy was related to reduced stress appraisals, thereby heightening client engagement. Last, there was consistent support for the stress-buffering role of Time 1 self-efficacy in the prediction of Time 2 job satisfaction.
