Selective emitters for thermophotovoltaic systems consisting of directionally solidified Al2O3-ME3Al5O12 (ME: Y, Er and Yb) eutectic coatings on Al2O3 substrates were produced and characterizated. Coatings were deposited by dip-coating on cylindrical substrates. After sintering, a continuous-wave CO2 laser was used to produce the surface resolidification. The optimization of the processing parameters yielded dense eutectic coatings with good adhesion to the substrate and with 90–200 µm in thickness. All coatings were free of voids and showed a eutectic microstructure consisting of a three dimensional interpenetrated network of Al2O3 and ME3Al5O12. The mechanical properties of the coatings (hardness and fracture toughness) were evaluated by indentation techniques. Thermal emission was studied by heating the rods with a CO2 laser at temperatures between 1000 and 1400 °C. Selective emission was observed in Er3+ and Yb3+ based coatings and attributed to the electronic transitions of the rare earth ions. Er3+-coatings showed the best emission properties as selective emitters for thermophotovoltaic converters.  相似文献

Si3N4 ceramics were prepared by hot pressing (HP) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) methods using low content (5 mol%) Al2O3–RE2O3(RE = Y, Yb, and La)–SiO2/TiN as sintering additives/secondary additives. The effects of sintering additives and sintering methods on the composition, microstructures, and mechanical properties (hardness and fracture toughness) were investigated. The results show that fully density Si3N4 ceramics could be fabricated by rational tailoring of sintering additives and sintering method, and TiN secondary additive could promote the density during HP and SPS. Besides, SN-AYS-SPS possesses the most competitive mechanical properties among all the as-prepared ceramics with the Vickers hardness as 17.31 ± .43 GPa and fracture toughness as 11.07 ± .48 MPa m1/2.  相似文献

In the present work, microstructural refinement and mechanical response of Al2O3–ZrO2 eutectics fabricated by a pulse discharge plasma assisted melting (PDPAM) method were investigated. The solidified microstructure evolves from polygonal eutectic colonies into irregular cellular colonies with increasing the superheating temperature of the melt from 1820 °C to 1900 °C. The average eutectic spacing inside the colonies decreases from 1.80 ± 0.10 μm to 0.25 ± 0.06 μm, and the coarse inter-colonial structure is refined, which is attributed to the increase in undercooling temperature. High-temperature microstructural stability of Al2O3–ZrO2 eutectics is improved significantly as contrasted with the as-sintered ceramics. Besides, the load dependence of Vickers hardness for Al2O3–ZrO2 eutectics is investigated.  相似文献

Directionally solidified Al2O3/GdAlO3 eutectic ceramic rods with high densities and low solidification defects are prepared by laser floating zone melting at solidification rate from 2 to 200 μm/s. The microstructure evolution, eutectic growth behavior and mechanical properties are investigated. At low solidification rates (<30 μm/s), the eutectic rods present a homogeneous irregular eutectic microstructure, whereas cellular microstructure containing regular lamella/rod structure is developed at higher solidification rates. The relationship is established between the eutectic interphase spacing and solidification rate, which follows the Magnin-Kurz eutectic model. The Vickers hardness (15.9–17.3 GPa) increases slightly with decreasing interphase spacing, but the fracture toughness (4.08 MPa m1/2) shows little dependence with the solidification rate. Different crack propagation mechanisms are revealed among the indentation cracks. The flexural strength at ambient temperature reaches up to 1.14 GPa for the eutectic grown at 100 μm/s. The fracture surface analysis indicates that the surface defects are the main crack source.  相似文献

It has been reported that solidification of the Al2O3–YAG equilibrium eutectic structure follows melting of the Al2O3–YAP metastable eutectic structure. Since the exothermic heat due to solidification was consumed by the endothermic heat due to melting, a fine and uniform eutectic structure was obtained. However, the composition of the Al2O3–YAG eutectic structure is restricted to the metastable eutectic composition. In this paper, Al2O3–YAG eutectic compacts with an off-metastable eutectic composition were prepared by the addition of Al2O3 particles to Al2O3–YAP eutectic particles with diameters less than 20 μm. In compositions ranging from 18.5 mol%Y2O3 to 13.5 mol%Y2O3, dense Al2O3–YAG eutectic compacts were formed without any Al2O3 segregation. The flexural strength and the fracture toughness remained almost unchanged with the increase in the Al2O3 phase. The addition of Al2O3 particles to the Al2O3–YAP eutectic particles enabled the matrix phase to change from the YAG phase to the Al2O3 phase.  相似文献

Highly densified Al4SiC4 ceramics with a relative density of 96.1% were prepared by pressureless sintering using 2 wt% Y2O3 as additives. The densification mechanism, phase composition, microstructures and mechanical properties of Al4SiC4 ceramics were investigated. Y2O3 in-situ reacted with the oxygen impurities in Al4SiC4 powder to form a yttrium aluminate liquid phase during sintering, which promoted the densification and anisotropic grain growth. The final Al4SiC4 ceramics were composed of equiaxed grains and columnar grains, and presented a bimodal grain distribution. The mechanical properties of the pressureless sintered Al4SiC4 ceramics were better than those reported for hot pressed Al4SiC4, including a flexural strength of 369 ± 24 MPa, fracture toughness of 4.8 ± 0.1 MPa m1/2 and Vickers hardness of 11.3 ± 0.2 GPa. Pressureless sintering of Al4SiC4 ceramics is of great significance for the development and practical application of Al4SiC4 ceramic parts, especially with big size and complex shape.  相似文献

Directionally solidified eutectic oxide ceramics are very promising as a next-generation structural material for ultrahigh-temperature applications, above 1600?°C, owing to their outstanding properties of high corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, high fracture strength and toughness, and high hardness. Herein, Al2O3/GdAlO3 eutectic ceramic was prepared with horizontal high-frequency induction zone melting (HIZM), and the effects of the processing parameters on the eutectic microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The results indicated that the directionally solidified Al2O3/GdAlO3 eutectic ceramic was composed only of the Al2O3 phase and GdAlO3 phase penetrating mutually, and the Al2O3 phase was the substrate in which the GdAlO3 phase was embedded. As the solidification rate increased from 1 to 5?mm/h, the eutectic microstructure underwent a transformation from an irregular pattern to a relatively regular “rod” or “lamellar” pattern, and the eutectic spacing constantly decreased, reaching a minimum value of 0.5?μm. The eutectic ceramic hardness and fracture toughness at room temperature increased continuously, reaching 23.36?GPa and 3.12?MPa?m1/2, which were 2.3 times and 2.5 times those of the sintered ceramic with the same composition, respectively. Compared with the samples obtained from vertical high-frequency induction zone melting, the orientation of eutectic phases along the growth direction decreased significantly, and the size uniformity of the GdAlO3 phase became poorer in the samples prepared with HIZM at the same solidification rate; nevertheless, the hardness and fracture toughness of the samples increased by 11% and 63%, respectively.  相似文献

Microstructure control and competitive growth of Al2O3/Er3Al5O12 eutectic/off-eutectics are explored over wide ranges of solidification rates and compositions. Gradual transformation phenomenon of microstructure morphology from complete eutectic to eutectic + coarse Er3Al5O12 phase and to eutectic + Er3Al5O12 dendrite is observed and the corresponding influence factors are evaluated. Competitive growth between single-phase Al2O3 (or Er3Al5O12) dendrite and eutectic is analyzed and coupled growth zone is mapped through comparing interface temperatures of different patterns of microstructures. The complete eutectic microstructure could be obtained at Al2O3/Er3Al5O12 hypoeutectic (Al2O3-17.5 mol% Er2O3) under fast solidification rate and the onset growth rate (?0.94 × 104 μm/s) estimated from the measured eutectic spacing (?150 nm) fits well with the result calculated on the basis of competitive growth (?1.27 × 104 μm/s). Transformation of microstructure from irregular eutectic to regular eutectic and probable adjustment mechanism of eutectic spacings are discussed when the eutectic spacings refined from micron-scale (<10 μm) to nano-scale (?20 nm).  相似文献

Al2O3/Y3Al5O12/ZrO2 directionally solidified ceramic has been considered as a promising candidate for ultrahigh temperature structural materials due to its excellent performance even close to its melting point. In this work, laser floating zone (LFZ) solidification experiments were performed on Al2O3/Y3Al5O12/ZrO2 hypereutectic with the solidification rates between 2 μm/s and 30 μm/s. The full eutectic lamellar microstructure is obtained with hypereutectic composition. The solid/liquid interface morphology is investigated. The microstructure characteristic is discussed based on the solid/liquid interface. The variation of lamellar spacing with different compositions and solidification rates was reported and discussed by considering an irregular eutectic growth model. The maximum hardness and fracture toughness are 19.06 GPa and 3.8 MPa m1/2, respectively. The toughening mechanism of ZrO2 is discussed based on the scenario of the crack propagation pattern.  相似文献

Directionally solidified Al2O3/(Y0.2Er0.2Yb0.2Ho0.2Lu0.2)3Al5O12 eutectic high-entropy oxide ceramics (HEOCs) were successfully prepared with an optical floating zone furnace. The Al2O3/(Y0.2Er0.2Yb0.2Ho0.2Lu0.2)3Al5O12 eutectic HEOCs were pure phases with uniform distribution of rare-earth elements. The preferred growth orientation relationships were <10−10 > {0001}Al2O3 // <110 > {211}(Y0.2Er0.2Yb0.2Ho0.2Lu0.2)3Al5O12. The indentation fracture toughness and Vickers hardness were 6.8 ± 0.9 MPa·m1/2 and 16.1 ± 0.3 GPa, which were higher than that of Al2O3/Y3Al5O12 eutectic ceramics. The room temperature bending strength was 333 ± 42 MPa. Crack bridging, deflection and bifurcation were the main toughening mechanism. Hardness and reduced modulus mapping results illustrated that the hardness of (Y0.2Er0.2Yb0.2Ho0.2Lu0.2)3Al5O12 was close to that of Al2O3. Thermal expansion coefficient of Al2O3/(Y0.2Er0.2Yb0.2Ho0.2Lu0.2)3Al5O12 eutectic HEOCs was very similar to that of Al2O3/Y3Al5O12 but thermal conductivity was as low as 4.9 Wm−1 K−1 due to strong lattice distortion. These results suggest that high-entropy Al2O3/(Y0.2Er0.2Yb0.2Ho0.2Lu0.2)3Al5O12 eutectic ceramics are promising candidates for structural components application in gas turbine engines.  相似文献

Silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics doped with two different sintering additive systems (Al2O3–Y2O3 and Al2O3–Yb2O3) were prepared by hot-pressing sintering at 1800℃ for 2 h and 30 MPa. The microstructures, nano-indentation test, and mechanical properties of the as-prepared Si3N4 ceramics were systematically investigated. The X-ray diffraction analyses of the as-prepared Si3N4 ceramics doped with the two sintering additives showed a large number of phase transformations of α-Si3N4 to β-Si3N4. Grain size distributions and aspect ratios as well as their effects on mechanical properties are presented in this study. The specimen doped with the Al2O3–Yb2O3 sintering additive has a larger aspect ratio and higher fracture toughness, while the Vickers hardness is relatively lower. It can be seen from the nano-indentation tests that the stronger the elastic deformation ability of the specimens, the higher the fracture toughness. At the same time, the mechanical properties are greatly enhanced by specific interlocking microstructures formed by the high aspect ratio β-Si3N4 grains. In addition, the density, relative density, and flexural strength of the as-prepared Si3N4 ceramics doped with Al2O3–Y2O3 were 3.25 g/cm3, 99.9%, and 1053 ± 53 MPa, respectively. When Al2O3–Yb2O3 additives were introduced, the above properties reached 3.33 g/cm3, 99.9%, and 1150 ± 106 MPa, respectively. It reveals that microstructure control and mechanical property optimization for Si3N4 ceramics are feasible by tailoring sintering additives.  相似文献

An Al2O3–GdAlO3 (GAP) composite with a fine eutectic microstructure was obtained through local melting and rapid solidification during a flash event. An AC field of 1 kV/cm at a frequency of 1 kHz was applied to a calcined Al2O3–GAP body at a furnace temperature of 1400°C to induce the flash event. The Al2O3–GAP body exhibited local melting through the current path. Solidification proceeded with the maximum cooling rate of about 140°C/s just after the power supply was turned off. Using this flash treatment, a refined eutectic structure with rodlike GAP phases in the Al2O3 matrix was obtained within 1 min. The interphase spacing of the obtained structure was approximately 170 nm, comparable with the finest Al2O3–GAP eutectic material obtained in previous studies. A flash event and subsequent rapid cooling can contribute to forming fine eutectic ceramics with a relatively low furnace temperature and short processing time.  相似文献

Owing to their remarkable higher creep resistance, some oxides eutectic composites those fabricated by unidirectional solidification are prime candidates for structural components used in a severe corrosive environment at high temperatures. In this paper, the possibility of an Al2O3/YAG eutectic composite for high-temperature application, where the materials would be exposed to combustion gases, was investigated. The Al2O3/YAG eutectic composite was stable at 1700 °C in an atmosphere of oxygen/water vapor (O2/H2O), showing only slight changes in microstructure, volume and flexural strength after an exposure for 200 h. Thus, Al2O3/YAG eutectic composite is among the most promising ceramics for structural applications at high temperatures.  相似文献

We report on how the mechanical properties of sintered ceramics (i.e., a random mixture of equiaxed grains) with the Al2O3–Y2O3–ZrO2 eutectic composition compare with those of rapidly or directionally solidified Al2O3–Y2O3–ZrO2 eutectic melts. Ceramic microcomposites with the Al2O3–Y2O3–ZrO2 eutectic composition were fabricated by sintering in air at 1400–1500 °C, or hot pressing at 1300–1400 °C. Fully dense, three phase composites of Al2O3, Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 and YAG with grain sizes ranging from 0.4 to 0.8 μm were obtained. The grain size of the three phases was controlled by the size of the initial powders. Annealing at 1500 °C for 96 h resulted in grain sizes of 0.5–1.8 μm. The finest scale microcomposite had a maximum hardness of 19 GPa and a four-point bend strength of 282 MPa. The fracture toughness, as determined by Vickers indentation and indented four-point bending methods, ranged from 2.3 to 4.7 MPa m1/2. Although strengths and fracture toughnesses are lower than some directionally or rapidly solidified eutectic composites, the intergranular fracture patterns in the sintered ceramic suggest that ceramic microcomposites have the potential to be tailored to yield stronger, tougher composites that may be comparable with melt solidified eutectic composites.  相似文献

Directionally solidified Al2O3–Er3Al5O12–ZrO2 eutectic rods were processed using the laser floating zone method at growth rates of 25, 350 and 750 mm/h to obtain microstructures with different domain size. The mechanical properties were investigated as a function of the processing rate. The hardness, ∼15.6 GPa, and the fracture toughness, ∼4 MPa m1/2, obtained from Vickers indentation at room temperature were practically independent of the size of the eutectic phases. However, the flexural strength increased as the domain size decreased, reaching outstanding strength values close to 3 GPa in the samples grown at 750 mm/h. A high retention of the flexural strength was observed up to 1500 K in the materials processed at 25 and 350 mm/h, while superplastic behaviour was observed at 1700 K in the eutectic rods solidified at the highest rate of 750 mm/h.  相似文献

The mechanical properties and thermal stability of the Al2O3/Er3Al5O12 (EAG) eutectic ceramics have been investigated at very high temperature. The emissive properties of this eutectic ceramics have also been measured and its possibilities of application to an emitter have been discussed. The present eutectic ceramic has excellent high-temperature strength characteristics, showing that tensile yielding stress is approximately 300 MPa at 1650 °C and superior thermal stability at 1700 °C in an air atmosphere. The present material shows strong selective emission bands at wavelength 1.5 μm due to Er3+ ion. The emission bands of this material are nearly coincident with the sensitive region of GaSb PV cell, therefore, the Al2O3/EAG eutectic ceramic can be regarded as one of the promising emitter materials in TPV systems.  相似文献

In this paper, BNNSs/Al2O3 composite powder was prepared by in-situ reaction using borate nitridation method and BNNSs/Al2O3 composite ceramics were prepared by hot-pressing sintering. This method achieves uniform mixing of BNNSs and Al2O3 ceramic matrix and reduces the introduction of impurities in the processing process. The BNNSs/Al2O3 composite ceramics have excellent bending strength (549.4 MPa), fracture toughness (5.18 MPa m1/2) and hardness (21.3 GPa). The high hardness of composite ceramics is attributed to high grain boundary strength and density. The reinforcing mechanisms of ceramics include BNNSs pull-out, BNNSs bridging, crack deflection as well as the transgranular fracture and intergranular fracture of Al2O3 matrix.  相似文献

Directionally solidified microstructures of Al2O3-Er3Al5O12 eutectic and off-eutectic in situ composite ceramics were explored under abrupt-change pulling rate conditions. Corresponding temperature distributions and interface locations were studied. In eutectic composition, fluctuation of eutectic spacing occurred when the pulling rate increased abruptly. A gradually increase or abrupt increase in eutectic spacing was observed when the pulling rate decreased abruptly. In hypoeutectic and hypereutectic compositions, formation of the primary phases were suppressed when the pulling rate increased abruptly from 10?µm/s to 100?µm/s, while primary phases precipitated when the pulling rate decreased abruptly from 100?µm/s to 10?µm/s. The interface altitude decreased after the pulling rate increased abruptly, but increased after the pulling rate decreased abruptly. The liquid composition restriction (around the eutectic composition) at the eutectic interface plays an important role in the suppression of the primary dendrite and coupled eutectic oxides can be obtained in off-eutectic compositions even under higher solidification rate conditions.  相似文献
