Most of the literature on innovation management highlights the fundamental role played by people in the innovation process and the need to fully develop the creative and innovative potential of organizations' members. This article offers the result of extensive research carried out among some of the most innovative companies in the Basque Country, a highly innovative region located in the north of Spain. It draws interesting conclusions about how these innovative companies combine strong leadership, human resource practices, and an organizational culture that enhances innovation capabilities among the company's employees. More specifically, it answers questions such as the following: Are human resources policies, leadership, and innovation culture implemented equally in Basque innovative companies? Do companies make the same effort in deploying these elements or routines and practices related to them? PurposeManaging processed food products’ safety and recall is a challenge for industry and governments. Contaminated food items can create a significant public health hazard with potential for acute and chronic food borne illnesses. This industry study examines the challenges companies face while managing a processed food recall situation and devise a responsive and reliable knowledge management framework for product safety and recall supply chain for the focal global manufacturing and distribution enterprise.MethodDrawing upon the knowledge management and product safety and recall literature and reliability engineering theory, this study uses a holistic single case based approach to develop a knowledge management framework with Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) decision model. This knowledge management decision framework facilitates analysis of the root causes for each potential major recall issue and assesses the reliability of the product safety and recall supply chain system and its critical components.ResultsThe main reasons highlighted for a recall and associated failure modes in a knowledge management framework are to devise appropriate deployment of resources, technology and procedures to recall supply chain. This study underscores specific information described by managers of a global processed food manufacturer and their perspectives about the product safety and recall process, and its complexities. Full scale implementation of product safety and recall supply chain in the proposed knowledge management framework after the current pilot study will be carried out eventually through expert systems. This operational system when fully implemented will capture the essence of decision making environments comprising goals and objectives, courses of action, resources, constraints, technology and procedures.ImplicationsThe study recognizes the significance of communication, integration, failsafe knowledge management process design framework, leveraging technology such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) within all levels of supply chain for product traceability and the proactive steps to help companies successfully manage a recall process and also reestablish trust among the consumers. The proposed knowledge management framework can also preempt product recall by acting as an early warning system. A formal knowledge management framework will enable a company’s knowledge be cumulative for product safety and recall and serve as an important integrating and coordinating role for the organization.  相似文献

In the knowledge and information society, the value of utilizing ICT technology in companies is being newly interpreted upon the convergence of business and information technology of companies. Accordingly, companies are ensuring corporate competitiveness by improving product productivity and reducing the consumption of human/physical resources through the change of strategic management environment using ICT technology. On the other hand, companies’ core information is being leaked outside of company from the convergence with ICT technology and its scale is increasing each year. Accordingly, the need for improving the level of security according to companies’ informatization level is increasing. However, studies are lacking on the composition of security strategy in suitable forms according to the scale of company and level of retaining resources. Today's highly competitive business environment forces the managers to continuously make the best decisions in the shortest possible time. The ability to provide concurrency among manufacturing functions is a critical need for modern organizations as, especially, distributed environment requires synchronization of manufacturing functions. Moreover, manufacturing companies need to have strong capability of adaptation (agility) mainly because of the dynamic relationships that must be established between manufacturing units. To achieve these, there is a need for an integrated manufacturing system that will handle all interactions and interrelationships which will then be affected by the changes and create maximum gain under limited resources. In order to create and effectively manage such an integrated manufacturing system there is a need for a reference model. In this paper, such a reference model called REference Model for intelligent Integrated Manufacturing System (REMIMS) is introduced. REMIMS has hierarchical architecture with several agents responsible for different manufacturing functions. To facilitate REMIMS and allow interaction among the agents to share their knowledge, a specific knowledge exchange protocol in a knowledge network is being developed.  相似文献

Innovation is a critical factor in the success of industrial companies, and just as important is the need to get innovative products to the market quickly. Therefore, it is important to talk about ‘management of product development time’ because, under this new paradigm, companies able of ‘mastering’ the development time will launch the product into the market just spending the planned time and resources and at the real moment. This will give back to the company higher market share and faster market penetration. The main objective of the project Acceleration of Innovative Ideas into the Market (AIM) is to provide the means of stimulating the creation of innovative ideas in general, and specifically on potential product/process improvements and on problem solving. Abstract

A number of authors and multi‐national organizations have suggested that providing information services, and in particular software engineering and programming services, for export afford an important economic opportunity for poor countries. Throughout the world, developing countries have acted on this advice. This paper will argue that the opportunities for software engineering services in particular are limited, at least for small developing economies. The main argument is that software engineering and programming are labor‐intensive activities and that small developing countries simply do not have the required resources to acquire or train a sufficient number of software engineers and programmers. Any development policy that blindly follows the tenet that small developing countries can improve their economic position through the provision of information services for export is therefore bound to fail. Hence, more sophisticated policies are called for. This paper will also examine a number of such policy options, including an innovative human resource development policy being developed in Jamaica. ABSTRACT

Working with Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) is challenging, especially for learners, as ICT control most of their work environment. These learners need to be supported with solutions that are up-to-date with the technological challenges, and can keep up with the fast-paced evolving ICT. Acquiring new knowledge is important for the progress of learners, but it is getting harder to obtain with the overwhelming amount of resources produced by many Information Systems (ISs) in the learning environment. In order to help learners manage resources, we are following the approach of System of Information Systems (SoIS) to support learners. The SoIS gives the opportunity to explore how individual and organisational learning can be enhanced through a combination of different ISs in the learning environment. In this context, we look into the orchestration of SoIS that can provide the ability to index, share, annotate, and recommend important resources in the learning environment. In that sense, this paper presents the approach of SoIS to support learners with a case study at the University of Technology of Compiègne.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The HTTP protocol is designed for stateless transactions, but many Web applications require a session to be maintained between a Web browser and a server creating a stateful environment. Each Web application decides how its session is managed and needs to be able to trust the session identifier. However, it is possible for sessions to be hijacked, and an intruder can gain unauthorized access to the hijacked session. The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis of current session management mechanisms and examine various hijacking techniques. The primary issues that will be addressed pertain to session management and the importance of securing the creation, deletion, and transmission of a session token. We provide a broader view of the session hijacking threat environment by analyzing existing Web application implementations to help demonstrate the need for session hijacking prevention. We will identify the session management areas that are targeted by attackers and will identify and examine various attacks that can lead to a session being hijacked.  相似文献

Abstract

In this age of increasing electronic instruction in academic libraries, the University of Toledo's Carlson Library, like many other academic libraries, is trying to come of age. The library's instruction program has traditionally used a paper-based instructional format. However, with the introduction of the library's OPAC, CD-ROMs, the Internet, and OhioLINK in recent years, we are faced with a number of challenges which this paper will discuss. The main challenge is that we are trying to teach electronic resources without a mediated classroom in the library. We need to bridge the gap between the paper-based instruction program and electronic resources because our current teaching methods do not always allow for patron interaction with the technology. Increasingly, instruction is having to take place at the Information Desk, where there are time constraints and library users are unclear about the kinds of information they want or which electronic resources they need. Adapting to these new and growing resources and developing the skills needed to teach them are among the important challenges librarians at Carlson Library face.  相似文献

ContextAgile software development changes the nature of collaboration, coordination, and communication in software projects.ObjectiveOur objective was to understand the challenges of shared decision-making in agile software development teams.MethodWe designed a multiple case study consisting of four projects in two software product companies that recently adopted Scrum. We collected data in semi-structured interviews, through participant observations, and from process artifacts.ResultsWe identified three main challenges to shared decision-making in agile software development: alignment of strategic product plans with iteration plans, allocation of development resources, and performing development and maintenance tasks in teams.ConclusionAgile software development requires alignment of decisions on the strategic, tactical, and operational levels in order to overcome these challenges. Agile development also requires a transition from specialized skills to redundancy of functions and from rational to naturalistic decision-making. This takes time; the case companies needed from one to two years to change from traditional, hierarchical decision-making to shared decision-making in software development projects.  相似文献

This article covers the subject of the practical application of the principles of open innovation in Dutch industry. Open innovation is considered to be the third stage in evolving systems for innovation management. The results of the study showed that innovative Dutch companies have successfully adopted the principles of open innovation regarding open innovation culture and importing mechanisms. Some challenges are found in the use of exporting mechanisms; but the biggest challenges for innovative Dutch companies lie in the flexible and open way of handling their business models.  相似文献

PurposeThe purpose of this research is to present a case-based analytic method for a service-oriented value chain and a sustainable network design considering customer, environmental and social values. Enterprises can enhance competitive advantage by providing more values to all stakeholders in the network.Design/methodology/approachOur model employs a stylized database to identify successful cases of value chain application under similar company marketing conditions, illustrating potential value chains and sustainable networks as references. This work first identifies economic benefits, environmental friendliness and social contribution values based on prior studies. Next, a search engine which is developed based on the rough set theory will search and map similarities to find similar or parallel cases in the database. Finally, a visualized network mapping will be automatically generated to possible value chains.FindingsThis study applies a case-based methodology to assist enterprises in developing a service-oriented value chain design. For decision makers, this can reduce survey time and inspire innovative works based on previous successful experience. Besides, successful ideas from prior cases can be reused. In addition to customer values, this methodology incorporates environment and social values that may encourage a company to build their value chain in a more comprehensive and sustainable manner.Research implicationsThis is a pilot study which attempts to utilize computer-aided methodology to assist in service or value-related design. The pertinent existing solutions can be filtered from an array of cases to engage the advantages from both product-oriented and service-oriented companies. Finally, the visualized display of value network is formed to illustrate the results.Practical implicationsA customized service-oriented value chains which incorporates environment and social values can be designed according to different conditions. Also, this system engages the advantages from both product-oriented and service-oriented companies to build a more comprehensive value network. Apart from this, the system can be utilized as a benchmarking tool, and it could remind the decision makers to consider potential value from a more multifaceted perspective.Originality/valueThis is the first paper that applied a computer-aided method to design service-oriented value chains. This work also can serve as a decision support and benchmarking system because decision makers can develop different value networks according to various emphasized values. Abstract

Industrial innovation often involves human rather than technical problems. Such problems can be particularly acute when embedded within organizational structures and when allied to mechanisms, such as control systems, which reinforce the status quo. Management accountancy systems often play this role, being crucially involved in the process of evaluating innovative investments against performance criteria. and indeed are an element within a range of options available in the organizational design process. Yet often in practice such systems and their designers are too far removed from where the innovation occurs: being seen incorrectly as an adjunct of senior management, and as an appraisal and control mechanism, rather than an enabler of change and improvement. This is a symptom of a wider problem of separation between the sites of innovation and production. These issues arc explored and some strategic design criteria developed in the context of MRP2/JIT production management systems.  相似文献

Abstract

The interest of the pioneers of cybernetics and systems theory in psycho-pathology is noted. Alcoholism is cited as an example of the application of cybernetic and systems concepts to psychopathology. The paper argues that conventional medical and learning theory models of alcoholism are erroneous in that they do not take account of cybernetic and systems views, Empirical evidence is reviewed which supports the subsuming of the interactionist perspective by General Behavior Systems Theory. The importance of homeostatic mechanisms is discussed. It is concluded that progress in the management of alcoholism is dependent on the adoption of an epis-temology consistent with that of cybernetics.  相似文献

Cloud manufacturing is emerging as a novel business paradigm for the manufacturing industry, in which dynamically scalable and virtualised resources are provided as consumable services over the Internet. A handful of cloud manufacturing systems are proposed for different business scenarios, most of which fall into one of three deployment modes, i.e. private cloud, community cloud, and public cloud. One of the challenges in the existing solutions is that few of them are capable of adapting to changes in the business environment. In fact, different companies may have different cloud requirements in different business situations; even a company at different business stages may need different cloud modes. Nevertheless, there is limited support on migrating to different cloud modes in existing solutions. This paper proposes a Hybrid Manufacturing Cloud that allows companies to deploy different cloud modes for their periodic business goals. Three typical cloud modes, i.e. private cloud, community cloud and public cloud are supported in the system. Furthermore, it enables companies to set self-defined access rules for each resource so that unauthorised companies will not have access to the resource. This self-managed mechanism gives companies full control of their businesses and boosts their trust with enhanced privacy protection. A unified ontology is developed to enhance semantic interoperability throughout the whole process of service provision in the clouds. A Cloud Management Engine is developed to manage all the user-defined clouds, in which Semantic Web technologies are used as the main toolkit. The feasibility of this approach is verified through a group of companies, each of which has complex access requirements for their resources. In addition, a use case is carried out between customers and service providers. This way, optimal service is delivered through the proposed system.  相似文献

The migration of information resources and library use from predominantly print/on-site use to electronic/online use has created a fragmented set of systems for libraries and users. In addition, the growing complications associated with doing research in libraries as compared to the ease of use of Web-based search engines is causing libraries to review system design and review their approach to the provision of information and services. Popular trends including information portals, federated/meta-search systems, and link resolvers are being used in attempts to re-integrate library systems and provide better search interfaces. Despite their advantages, each of these applications falls short of creating the seamless experience that patrons are becoming used to finding on the Web. ContextTraditionally, Embedded Systems (ES) are tightly linked to physical products, and closed both for communication to the surrounding world and to additions or modifications by third parties. New technical solutions are however emerging that allow addition of plug-in software, as well as external communication for both software installation and data exchange. These mechanisms in combination will allow for the construction of Federated Embedded Systems (FES). Expected benefits include the possibility of third-party actors developing add-on functionality; a shorter time to market for new functions; and the ability to upgrade existing products in the field. This will however require not only new technical solutions, but also a transformation of the software ecosystems for ES.ObjectiveThis paper aims at providing an initial characterization of the mechanisms that need to be present to make a FES ecosystem successful. This includes identification of the actors, the possible business models, the effects on product development processes, methods and tools, as well as on the product architecture.MethodThe research was carried out as an explorative case study based on interviews with 15 senior staff members at 9 companies related to ES that represent different roles in a future ecosystem for FES. The interview data was analyzed and the findings were mapped according to the Business Model Canvas (BMC).ResultsThe findings from the study describe the main characteristics of a FES ecosystem, and identify the challenges for future research and practice.ConclusionsThe case study indicates that new actors exist in the FES ecosystem compared to a traditional supply chain, and that their roles and relations are redefined. The business models include new revenue streams and services, but also create the need for trade-offs between, e.g., openness and dependability in the architecture, as well as new ways of working.  相似文献

ContextQuality assurance effort, especially testing effort, is frequently a major cost factor during software development. Consequently, one major goal is often to reduce testing effort. One promising way to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of software quality assurance is the use of data from early defect detection activities to provide a software testing focus. Studies indicate that using a combination of early defect data and other product data to focus testing activities outperforms the use of other product data only. One of the key challenges is that the use of data from early defect detection activities (such as inspections) to focus testing requires a thorough understanding of the relationships between these early defect detection activities and testing. An aggravating factor is that these relationships are highly context-specific and need to be evaluated for concrete environments.ObjectiveThe underlying goal of this paper is to help companies get a better understanding of these relationships for their own environment, and to provide them with a methodology for finding relationships in their own environments.MethodThis article compares three different strategies for evaluating assumed relationships between inspections and testing. We compare a confidence counter, different quality classes, and the F-measure including precision and recall.ResultsOne result of this case-study-based comparison is that evaluations based on the aggregated F-measures are more suitable for industry environments than evaluations based on a confidence counter. Moreover, they provide more detailed insights about the validity of the relationships.ConclusionWe have confirmed that inspection results are suitable data for controlling testing activities. Evaluated knowledge about relationships between inspections and testing can be used in the integrated inspection and testing approach In2Test to focus testing activities.
