In contemporary construction environments, construction organizations measure their performance against a set of predefined performance measures. These performance measures are governed by the ability of the organization to maintain necessary sets of “competencies” that assist in the successful execution of its construction projects. Competencies are often difficult to define and measure due to the multidimensional and subjective nature of their assessment. This paper identifies 41 project competencies with a total of 248 criteria for evaluating the different project competencies. This paper also identifies seven performance categories with 46 project key performance indicators. A systematic framework and methodology are presented in this paper to measure project competencies and project key performance indicators. A new modeling approach considering prioritized fuzzy aggregation, factor analysis, and fuzzy neural networks is presented to identify the relationship between project competencies and project key performance indicators. Data collected from seven construction projects are first aggregated using prioritized fuzzy aggregation to measure the different construction project competencies. The different project competencies are then analyzed using factor analysis. The factor analysis results are used with the prioritized fuzzy aggregation results to calculate inputs for the fuzzy neural networks. The fuzzy neural networks are then trained and tested using the data collected from the seven construction projects to identify and quantify the relationship between the different project competencies and project key performance indicators. This paper contributes to the current body of knowledge in project competencies and performance by establishing a standardized framework and methodology for evaluating the impact of construction project competencies on project key performance indicators. Furthermore, this paper incorporates advanced modeling techniques through the application of fuzzy set theory and neural networks to identify the relationship between the different project competencies and project key performance indicators. Identifying the relationship between construction project competencies and project key performance indicators allows construction organizations to improve their overall construction project performance by enhancing their projects competencies.  相似文献

Agency theory offers a foundation for explaining the impact of project monitoring on project success. This study applied agency theory to survey 428 information systems project managers concerning their project monitoring, shirking by systems developers, and project success. Greater project monitoring via planning and meetings predicted less shirking, while greater monitoring via responsibilities and comparison did not. Less shirking via poor focus predicted increased project success, while less shirking via loafing did not. Education and training within the USA in the project management field is described. This is intended to: improve understanding and acceptance of project management principles and practices; develop specific planning and control skills, including the use of particular computer software packages; and improve the success rate for project planning and execution. Training and education has traditionally been directed toward project managers and the specialists in project planning and control whose jobs are to support the project manager and the project team. Emotional intelligence is considered to be important for project managers to affect project performance, but emotional intelligence does not always play an effective role. Based on conservation of resource theory, this article explores the impact of project managers’ emotional intelligence on project performance. The results show that the emotional intelligence of project managers affects project performance through the mediating effect of project commitment, and project complexity negatively moderates the impact of project managers’ emotional intelligence on project commitment. This article provides practical guidance on how project managers can handle emotional intelligence in different complex situations and serves as a reference for the selection and appointment of project managers in complex projects.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to explore the causal impact of project management effort on project profitability (i.e., profit on sales) for varying degrees of project complexity in an engineer-to-order (ETO) project setting. We use a sample of 917 projects’ status reports of a large firm that offers ETO products coupled with a control function approach to empirically investigate the causal effect of project management effort on projects’ profitability. Furthermore, we investigate the marginal impact of project management effort and its effect for different degrees of project complexity. Our results reveal a positive but diminishing impact of project management effort on project profitability. Furthermore, we find that higher project complexity jeopardizes project profitability. However, project management's marginal impact increases with increasing project complexity, ultimately leading to higher returns of more complex projects. While previous research provided correlational evidence between project management and project success, this study is, to the best of our knowledge, the first to demonstrate a causal impact of project management on profitability. The results offer unique insights into the economic benefits of project management while taking into account the complexity of the projects. The study confirms the benefits of project management efforts regarding project profitability and underlines the high relevance of project management for complex projects, thereby underlining the importance of contingency theory. It shows that firms can compensate higher ETO customization and higher project complexity through higher project management effort.  相似文献
