Structural acrylic adhesives are of special interest because those adhesives are cured at room temperature and can be bonded to oily substrates. To use those adhesives widely for structural bonding, it is necessary to clarify the methodology for predicting strengths of bonding structures with those adhesives. Recently, cohesive zone models (CZMs) have been receiving intensive attentions for simulation of fracture strengths of adhesive joints, especially when bonded with ductile adhesives. The traction-separation laws under mode I and mode II loadings require to estimate fracture toughness of adhesively bonded joints. In this paper, the traction-separation laws of an acrylic adhesive in mode I and mode II were directly obtained from experiments using Arcan type adhesively bonded specimens. The traction-separation laws were determined by simultaneously recording the J-integral and the opening displacements in the directions normal and tangential to the adhesive layer, respectively.  相似文献

A continuum damage model for simulating damage propagation of bonded joints is presented, introducing a linear softening damage process for the adhesive agent. Material models simulating anisotropic non-linear elastic behavior and distributed damage accumulation were used for the composite adherends as well. The proposed modeling procedure was applied to a series of lap joints accounting for adhesion either by means of secondary bonding or co-bonding. Stress analysis was performed using plane strain elements of a commercial finite element code allowing implementation of user defined constitutive equations. Numerical results for the different overlap lengths under investigation were in good agreement with experimental data in terms of joint strength and overall structural behavior.  相似文献

An experimental and numerical investigation into the shear strength behaviour of adhesive single lap joints (SLJs) was carried out in order to understand the effect of temperature on the joint strength. The adherend material used for the experimental tests was an aluminium alloy in the form of thin sheets, and the adhesive used was a high-strength high temperature epoxy. Tensile tests as a function of temperature were performed and numerical predictions based on the use of a bilinear cohesive damage model were obtained. It is shown that at temperatures below Tg, the lap shear strength of SLJs increased, while at temperatures above Tg, a drastic drop in the lap shear strength was observed. Comparison between the experimental and numerical maximum loads representing the strength of the joints shows a reasonably good agreement.  相似文献

This paper outlines an experimental study on the shear behaviour of structural silicone adhesively bonded steel-glass orthogonal lap joints. In the combination of steel plate and glass panel to form a hybrid structural glazing system, bonded joints with structural silicones can provide certain flexibility which relieves stress peaks at critical points of glass panel. The cohesive failure and its related fracture pattern of test joints with varied geometries of adhesives are examined experimentally. It is shown that the presence of two failure modes as discrete voids and macro cracks is closely related to the adhesive thickness. The effects of geometric parameters of adhesives on the joint shear strength are examined. It is demonstrated that the joint shear strengths are increased with increased individual overlap length, reduced adhesive thickness or increased adhesive width while the shear deformation corresponding to maximum shear force is mostly influenced by adhesive thickness. Mechanical contributions for those effects are analyzed accordingly. Finally, an analytical formula allowing for the equilibrium of strain and force on the adhesive and adherend is proposed for the analysis of shear strength. It is demonstrated that calculated normalized shear force ratios predicted by proposed formula agree well with those from experimental results.  相似文献

The strength and interfacial behavior of single lap joints with graded adherends subjected to uniaxial tensile loading are investigated in the present paper. A bilinear cohesive zone model coupled with the finite element method is adopted to describe the damage and failure process of the adhesive layer. The peak loading, the rotation angle between the overlap of the joint and the horizontal direction, as well as the failure energy are investigated comprehensively. It is interesting to find that adopting different variation law in the graded adherends may result in varying strength of adhesive joints. By means of choosing proper material and geometry parameters of adhesive joints, the peak loading, the rotation angle and the failure energy of joints can be greatly improved. What is more, the strength of the SLJ is found to depend much more on the property of the soft part near the adhesive layer. The results should be helpful to guide the design of novel structures of adhesive joints in present and potential applications.  相似文献

To predict the failure of adhesively bonded CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics)-aluminum alloy joints applied to High Speed EMU (Electric Multiple Units) more accurately with consideration of temperature influence, a combined experimental-numerical approach is developed in this study. Bulk specimens and adhesive joints, including thick-adherend shear joints(TSJ), scarf joints(SJ) with scarf angle 30°(SJ30°), 45°(SJ45°), and 60°(SJ60°), as well as butt joints(BJ), were manufactured and tested at 23°C (room temperature, RT), 80°C (high temperature, HT) and ?40°C (low temperature, LT). Quadratic stress criteria built at different temperatures were introduced in the cohesive zone mode (CZM) to conduct a simulation analysis. Test results suggest that the effects of HT on mechanical properties of adhesive are more obvious than the effects of LT. It is also found that TSJ show the greatest improvements in failure strengths at LT due to the occurrence of cohesive failure, while SJ and BJ tend to develop fiber tears due to the presence of normal stress. Stress distributions of adhesive layer are found to be symmetrical except for the normal stress of SJ. This simulation analysis shows that the prediction accuracy is related to quadratic stress criteria applied, and that the relative errors of prediction results are less than 7.5% for engineering applications.  相似文献

The goal of this research was to experimentally demonstrate the correlations between processing variables (adhesive type, bondline thickness, adherend thickness, surface pretreatment, overflow fillet) and effective strength in adhesively bonded single lap joints. While generalizations between effective strength and individual joint design parameters have been assumed for decades, the multifaceted interplay between parameters is complex and remains difficult to understand. Traditionally reported studies of the adhesive bond strength of single lap joints are often limited in the sample size populations needed to statistically probe concurrent design variables. To overcome sample size limitations a test matrix of 1200 single lap joints, partitioned by 96 unique fabrication conditions, was processed and tested using a workflow protocol orchestrated through a relational database. The enhanced pedigree and integrity enabled by using a relational database centered workflow allowed for multivariate principal component analysis of the joint design parameters, with all experimental data input available for peer audit. The results of this study revealed that the adhesive type biases the remaining joint configuration variables towards more influence with respect to either mechanical load or displacement to failure.  相似文献

Non-linear finite element methods are applied in the analysis of single lap joints between fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP) and metals. The importance of allowing for both geometric and material non-linearities is shown. The optimization of single lap joints is done by modifying the geometry of the joint ends. Different shapes of adhesive fillet, reverse tapering of the adherend, rounded edges and denting are applied in order to increase the joint strength. The influence of the joint-end geometry is shown for different metal adherend/FRP adherend/adhesive combinations. The results of the numerical predictions suggest that with a careful joint-end design the strength of the joints can be increased by 90–150%.  相似文献

In this study, a method has been proposed to obtain the failure envelope of brittle adhesives using the experimental failure loads of precracked single lap joints (SLJs). The proposed technique is based on the principles of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), on J-integral relations, and on results of a numerical analysis. Compared to the previous approaches, the introduced experimental method has some advantages such as low manufacturing costs and simpler test procedure. The proposed method can also provide a wide range of mode mix ratios without the need of an additional apparatus. The fracture envelope obtained from the proposed method was then verified by performing some fracture tests including double cantilever beam (DCB), end-notched flexure (ENF), and single leg bending (SLB) specimens. Good correlation was seen between the fracture envelopes of the proposed method and the ones obtained from the fracture mechanics experiments.  相似文献

Multi-Walled Carbon NanoTubes (MWCNT) are ideally suited to be used for damage sensing in fiber reinforced composite materials, and are used for structural health monitoring in adhesive joints. In this work, the capability of MWCNTs for condition monitoring of a single lap Al-Al adhesive joints (SLJ) under shear load is studied using impedance measurements. Different weight percent of MWCNT, i.e. 2.5, 6 and 9 wt.% are added to epoxy adhesive. Epoxy adhesive containing 9 wt.% MWCNT is identified during shear loading to have the highest ultimate strength among the considered specimens and provide the best sensory properties. To provide a more concise evaluation of the damage progression in the adhesive layer under shear stress, artificial defects are inserted into the SLJ specimens. The effects of square and circular defects on the damage progression in the adhesive layer are studied. The results show that primary microcracks are initiated at and consequently develop from the defect boundary in the adhesive joints with larger size of defect. It was found that the shape of the defect does not have a significant effect on the impedance response and sharp resistance changes for specimens with circular and square defect areas of 70% overlap area were about 4.55 and 4.2% respectively. Additionally, when the crack grows entirely through the adhesive layer, a nonzero slope of the resistance change resulted even for low levels of shear displacement.  相似文献

One major characteristic of bonded structures is the highly localised nature of deformation near sharp corners, ply-terminations, and ends of joints where load transfer occurs. This paper presents an investigation of the use of a cohesive zone model in predicting the strong effects of stress concentration due to varying adherend thickness on the pull-off strength measured by the Pneumatic Adhesion Tensile Testing Instrument. A comparison is made with the point-strain-at-a-distance criterion, where the plastic deformation of the adhesive is analysed using a modified Drücker–Prager/cap plasticity material model. The fracture properties of the cohesive zone model were determined using double-cantilever and end-notch flexural specimens, and the cohesive strengths were measured using tensile and lap shear tests. Comparisons with experimental results reveal that the cohesive zone model with perfectly plastic (or non-strain-softening) cohesive law provides accurate predictions of joint strengths.  相似文献

The paper presents a comparison of the cohesive zone model (CZM) and the continuum damage mechanics approach in predicting the static failure of a single lap joint (SLJ). The effect of mesh size and viscosity were studied to give more understanding on the failure load and computational time. Both the load–displacement response and the backface strain technique were utilised to compare the validity of predictions. Peel and shear stress and damage distributions along with the damage progression are compared to understand the behaviour of the models in predicting the static failure response. In general, both approaches show good accuracy in predicting the failure load; however, the cohesive zone approach requires shorter computation time than the continuum damage approach. The continuum damage approach shows some mesh-dependency particularly for elements with high aspect ratios, whereas the cohesive zone approach is not. The continuum damage approach is less sensitive than the cohesive zone approach to the artificial damping required to achieve convergence. Another interesting finding is using the same ultimate stress level of damage in the continuum damage approach at the peak load is much lower than that in the cohesive approach; but the failure process in this approach is faster.  相似文献

A method for improving the mechanical behavior of adhesive joints is embedding metal macrofibers to the adhesive layer. The effect of the orientation of metal macrofibers laid across the length and width of the joint (longitudinal and transversal directions) on the strength and elongation at failure of single lap joints (SLJs) was investigated experimentally by testing SLJs reinforced with metal macrofibers laid in different orientations. The experimental results indicated that increasing the number of metal macrofibers in the longitudinal direction improved the shear strength and elongation at failure of SLJs. However, the improvements were found to be dependent on the normalized horizontal distance between the metal macrofibers for which a proper value of 1 was determined. While embedding metal macrofibers in the transversal direction degraded the mechanical properties of SLJs. Finite element analyses were undertaken to investigate the effects of fibers orientation and horizontal distance on the adhesive peel and shear stress distributions. The results revealed that decreasing the horizontal distance between the metal macrofibers laid in the longitudinal direction decreased the adhesive shear stress values indicating improvement of the joint strength, while in SLJs reinforced with metal macrofibers laid in the transversal direction decreasing the fibers distance increased the adhesive peel stress values resulting in joint strength reduction.  相似文献

Adhesives have become the method of choice for many structural joining applications. Therefore, there is a need for improved understanding of adhesive joint performance, especially their failure, under a variety of loading conditions. Various numerical methods have been proposed to predict the failure of adhesive bonded material systems. These methods generally use a cohesive zone model (CZM) to analyze crack initiation and failure loci. The CZM incorporates a traction–separation law which relates the jump in surface tractions with the jump in displacements of abutting nodes of the cohesive segment; the area under the curve relating these jumps equals the energy release rate which is determined from experimental data. Values of parameters in the CZM are usually obtained through the comparison of results of numerical simulations with the experimental data for pure mode I and mode II deformations. Here a numerical approach to simulate crack initiation and propagation has been developed by implementing CZM in the meshless method using the symmetric smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SSPH) basis functions, and using the design of experiments technique to find optimal values of CZM parameters for mode I failure. Unlike in the finite element method where a crack generally follows a path between element boundaries, in the meshless method a crack can follow the path dictated by the physics of the problem. The numerical technique has been used to study the initiation and propagation of a crack in a double cantilever beam under mode I and mixed mode in-plane loadings. Computed results are found to agree well with the corresponding experimental findings. Significant contributions of the work include the determination of optimum values of CZM parameters, and simulating mode I, mode II and mixed mode failures using a meshless method with the SSPH basis functions.  相似文献

A damage zone model for the failure analysis of adhesively bonded joints   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The design of structural adhesively bonded joints is complicated by the presence of singularities at the ends of the joint and the lack of suitable failure criteria. Literature reviews indicate that bonded joint failure typically occurs after a damage zone at the end of the joint reaches a critical size. In this paper, a damage zone model based on a critical damage zone size and strain-based failure criteria is proposed to predict the failure load of adhesively bonded joints. The proposed damage zone model correctly predicts the joint failure locus and appears to be relatively insensitive to finite element mesh refinement. Results from experimental testing of various composite and aluminium lap joints have been obtained and compared with numerical analysis. Initial numerical predictions indicate that by using the proposed damage zone model, good correlation with experimental results can be achieved. A modified version of the damage zone model is also proposed which allows the model to be implemented in a practical engineering analysis environment. It is concluded that the damage zone model can be successfully applied across a broad range of joint configurations and loading conditions.  相似文献

The results of a limited experimental study are presented in which the effect of changing the stacking sequence in O±45° lay-up carbon fibre-reinforced plastic adherends on the joint strength of bonded single lap joints was investigated. It is found that both lay-up and stacking sequence influence strength. Correlation between experiment and predictions from simple theory is fair for 8-ply laminates but no correlation is found for 6-ply laminates. The need for a more detailed theoretical model is indicated.  相似文献

In this in vitro study, the effects of different surface preparations and resins on the strength and durability of adhesively bonded joints were evaluated. Disk-shaped cobalt-chromium substrate samples of the first group were treated by the Silicoater MD® system. Samples of the two subgroups were bonded with two different bisphenol-A glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA) adhesives. Samples of the second group were treated by the Rocatec®) system and bonded with a Bis-GMA adhesive. Alumina-blasted samples of the third group were bonded with two different types of Bis-GMA adhesive modified with a phosphate monomer. Samples were stored in water for 3 days, or thermocycled and stored in water for 6 months. The joint samples were then tested for tensile bond strength. When the alumina-blasted samples were bonded with Panavia Ex® or Panavia 21® adhesive the highest bond strength was obtained, regardless of the storage conditions. The Silicoater MD method in combination with the Bis-GMA adhesive yielded high initial bond strengths comparable to those obtained with the Panavia systems, but also recorded the highest drops in bond strengths with both types of adhesive after thermal stressing and water storage. The Rocatec system in combination with Nimetic Grip adhesive produced a low but stable bond strength even after thermocycling and water storage.  相似文献
