A new kind of pyridine‐containing aromatic diamine monomer, 4‐phenyl‐2,6‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]‐pyridine (PAPP), was successfully synthesized by a modified chichibabin reaction of benzaldehyde and a substituted acetophenone, 4‐(4‐nitrophenoxy)‐acetophenone (NPAP), followed by a reduction of the resulting dinitro compound 4‐phenyl‐2,6‐bis[4‐(4‐nitrophenoxy)phenyl]‐pyridine (PNPP) with Pd/C and hydrazine monohydrate. The aromatic diamine was employed to synthesize a series of new pyridine‐containing polyimides by polycondensation with various aromatic dianhydrides in N‐methy‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) via the conventional two‐step method, i.e., ring‐opening polycondensation forming the poly (amic acid)s and further thermal or chemical imidization forming polyimides. The inherent viscosities of the resulting polyimides were in the range of 0.79–1.13 dL/g, and most of them were soluble in common organic solvents such as N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc), NMP, and tetrahydrofuran (THF), etc. Meanwhile, strong and flexible polyimide films were obtained, which had good thermal stability, with the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of 268–338°C and the temperature at 5% weight loss of 521–548°C in air atmosphere, as well as outstanding mechanical properties with tensile strengths of 89.2–112.1 MPa and elongations at break of 9.5–15.4%. The polyimides also were found to possess low dielectric constants ranging from 2.53 to 3.11. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 104: 212–219, 2007  相似文献

A new trifluoromethylated bis(ether amine) monomer, 9,9‐bis[4‐(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenyl]xanthene (BATFPX), was prepared through the nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of 2‐chloro‐5‐nitrobenzotrifluoride and 9,9‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)xanthene in the presence of potassium carbonate, followed by catalytic reduction with hydrazine and Pd/C in ethanol. A series of novel fluorinated polyimides were synthesized from BATFPX with various commercially available aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydrides by one‐step polycondensation in m‐cresol. The resulting polyimides were readily soluble in many organic solvents such as N,N‐dimethylacetamide and tetrahydrofuran, and afforded transparent, flexible and strong films with low moisture absorption (0.28–0.51%), low dielectric constant (2.85–3.26 at 1 MHz) and good optical transparency with UV‐visible absorption cut‐off wavelengths at 352–410 nm. All the polyimides were amorphous and exhibited high thermal stability, with glass transition temperatures of 282–330 °C, 5% weight loss temperatures above 520 °C in nitrogen or air and char yields higher than 55% at 800 °C in nitrogen. Also, these polyimides had good mechanical properties with tensile strengths of 93–118 MPa, elongations at break of 9–16% and initial moduli of 2.07–2.58 GPa. A novel bis(ether amine) monomer, 5,5′‐bis[4‐(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenyl]‐4,7‐methanohexahydroindan ( 2 ), was synthesized through the nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of 5,5′‐bis‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐4,7‐methanohexahydroindan with 2‐chloro‐5‐nitrobenzotrifluoride to yield the intermediate dinitro compound, followed by catalytic reduction with hydrazine and Pd/C. A series of polyimides were synthesized from 2 and various aromatic dianhydrides using a standard two‐stage process with chemical or thermal imidization of poly(amic acid). All of these polymer films were soluble in amide‐type solvents above 10% w/v, had tensile strengths of 97–117 MPa, and the 10% weight loss temperature was above 464 °C with their residues exceeding 46% at 800 °C in nitrogen. Compared with the non‐fluorinated polyimides, the fluorinated series were observed to have lower dielectric constants (2.92–3.28 at 1 MHz) and lower moisture absorptions (0.15–0.43 wt%) as well as lower color intensity and better solubility. A novel fluorinated diamine monomer, 2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenyl]propane (2), was prepared through the nucleophilic substitution reaction of 2‐chloro‐5‐nitrobenzotrifluoride with 2,2‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)propane in the presence of potassium carbonate, followed by catalytic reduction with hydrazine and Pd/C. Polyimides were synthesized from diamine 2 and various aromatic dianhydrides 3a–f via thermal imidization. These polymers had inherent viscosities ranging from 0.73 to 1.29 dL/g. Polyimides 5a–f were soluble in amide polar solvents and even in less polar solvents. These films had tensile strengths of 87–100 MPa, elongations to break of 8–29%, and initial moduli of 1.7–2.2 GPa. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of 5a–f were in the range of 222–271°C, and the 10% weight loss temperatures (T10) of them were all above 493°C. Compared with polyimides 6 series based on 2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane (BAPP) and polyimides 7 based on 2,2‐Bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane (6FBAPP), the 5 series showed better solubility and lower color intensity, dielectric constant, and lower moisture absorption. Their films had cutoff wavelengths between 363 and 404 nm, b* values ranging from 8 to 62, dielectric constants of 2.68–3.16 (1 MHz), and moisture absorptions in the range of 0.04–0.35 wt %. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel fluorinated bis(ether amine) monomer, 2,6‐bis(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy) naphthalene, was prepared through the nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of 2‐chloro‐5‐nitrobenzotrifluoride and 2,6‐dihydroxynaphthalene in the presence of potassium carbonate, followed by catalytic reduction with hydrazine and Pd/C in ethanol. A series of novel trifluoromethylated polyimides were synthesized from the diamine with various commercially available aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydrides using a two‐stage process with thermal imidization of poly(amic acid) films. Most of the resulting polyimides were highly soluble in a variety of organic solvents and could afford transparent and tough films via solution casting. These polyimides exhibited moderately high glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of 249–311 °C, high thermal stability and good mechanical properties. Low moisture (0.19–0.85 %), low dielectric constants (2.49–3.59 at 10 kHz), and low color intensity were also observed. For a comparative study, a series of analogous polyimides based on 2,6‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)naphthalene were also prepared and characterized. Copyright © 2005 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A polyfluorinated aromatic diamine, 3,3′, 5,5′‐tetrafluoro‐4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane (TFDAM), was synthesized and characterized. A series of polyimides, PI‐1–PI‐4, were prepared by reacting the diamine with four aromatic dianhydrides via a one‐step high‐temperature polycondensation procedure. The obtained polyimide resin had moderate inherent viscosity (0.56–0.68 dL/g) and excellent solubility in common organic solvents. The polyimide films exhibited good thermal stability, with an initial thermal decomposition temperature of 555°C–621°C, a 10% weight loss temperature of 560°C–636°C, and a glass‐transition temperature of 280°C–326°C. Flexible and tough polyimide films showed good tensile properties, with tensile strength of 121–138 MPa, elongation at break of 9%–12%, and tensile modulus of 2.2–2.9 GPa. The polyimide films were good dielectric materials, and surface and volume resistance were on the order of a magnitude of 1014 and 1015 Ω cm, respectively. The dielectric constant of the films was below 3.0 at 1 MHz. The polyfluorinated films showed good transparency in the visible‐light region, with a cutoff wavelength as low as 302 nm and transmittance higher than 70% at 450 nm. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel diamine, 1,4‐bis [3‐oxy‐(N‐aminophthalimide)] benzene (BOAPIB), was synthesized from 1,4‐bis [3‐oxy‐(N‐phenylphthalimide)] benzene and hydrazine. Its structure was determined via IR, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis. A series of five‐member ring, hydrazine‐based polyimides were prepared from this diamine and various aromatic dianhydrides via one‐step polycondensation in p‐chlorophenol. The inherent viscosities of these polyimides were in the range of 0.17–0.61 dL/g. These polymers were soluble in polar aprotic solvents and phenols at room temperature. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the 5% weight‐loss temperatures of the polyimides were near 450°C in air and 500°C in nitrogen. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) indicated that the glass‐transition temperatures (Tgs) of these polymers were in the range of 265–360°C. The wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction showed that all the polyimides were amorphous. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

To investigate the CF3 group affecting the coloration and solubility of polyimides (PI), a novel fluorinated diamine 1,1‐bis[4‐(4‐amino‐2‐ trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenyl]‐1‐phenylethane (2) was prepared from 1,1‐ bis(4‐hydrophenyl)‐1‐phenylethan and 2‐chloro‐5‐nitrobenzotrifluoride. A series of light‐colored and soluble PI 5 were synthesized from 2 and various aromatic dianhydrides 3a–f using a standard two‐stage process with thermal 5a– f(H) and chemical 5a–f(C) imidization of poly(amic acid). The 5 series had inherent viscosities ranging from 0.55 to 0.98 dL/g. Most of 5a–f(H) were soluble in amide‐type solvents, such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP), N,N‐ dimethylacetamide (DMAc), and N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF), and even soluble in less polar solvents, such as m‐Cresol, Py, Dioxane, THF, and CH2Cl2, and the 5(C) series was soluble in all solvents. The GPC data of the 5a–f(C) indicated that the Mn and Mw values were in the range of 5.5–8.7 × 104 and 8.5–10.6 × 104, respectively, and the polydispersity index (PDI) Mw /Mn values were 1.2–1.5. The PI 5 series had excellent mechanical properties. The glass transition temperatures of the 5 series were in the range of 232–276°C, and the 10% weight loss temperatures were at 505–548 °C in nitrogen and 508–532 °C in air, respectively. They left more than 56% char yield at 800°C in nitrogen. These films had cutoff wavelengths between 356.5–411.5 nm, the b* values ranged from 5.0–71.1, the dielectric constants, were 3.11–3.43 (1MHz) and the moisture absorptions were in the range of 011–0.40%. Comparing 5 containing the analogous PI 6 series based on 1,1‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]‐1‐ phenylethane (BAPPE), the 5 series with the CF3 group showed lower color intensity, dielectric constants, and better solubility. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel aromatic polyimides were synthesized from N,N‐di(4‐aminophenyl)‐N′,N′‐diphenyl‐4,4′‐oxydianiline and aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydrides through a conventional two‐step procedure. Most of the polyimides exhibited reasonable solubility in organic solvents and could afford robust films via solution casting. The polyimides exhibited high thermal stability, with glass transition temperatures in the range 227–273 °C and 10% weight‐loss temperatures in excess of 550 °C. All the polyimide films showed ambipolar redox and multi‐electrochromic behaviors. They exhibited two reversible oxidation redox couples at 0.94–0.98 and 1.09–1.12 V versus Ag/AgCl in acetonitrile solution. A coupling reaction between the radical cations of the pendent triphenylamine units occurred during the oxidative process forming a tetraphenylbenzidine structure which resulted in an additional redox state and color change. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A novel dianhydride, trans‐1,2‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxyphenoxy)cyclohexane dianhydride (1,2‐CHDPA), was prepared through aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction of 4‐nitrophthalonitrile with trans‐cyclohexane‐1,2‐diol followed by hydrolysis and dehydration. A series of polyimides (PIs) were synthesized from one‐step polycondensation of 1,2‐CHDPA with several aromatic diamines, such as 2,2′‐bis(trifluoromethyl)biphenyl‐4,4′‐diamine (TFDB), bis(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenyl)ether (TFODA), 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA), 1,4‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)benzene (TPEQ), 4,4′‐(1,3‐phenylenedioxy)dianiline (TPER), 2,2′‐bis[4‐(3‐aminodiphenoxy)phenyl]sulfone (m‐BAPS), and 2,2′‐bis[4‐(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenyl]sulfone (6F‐BAPS). The glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of the polymers were higher than 198°C, and the 5% weight loss temperatures (Td5%s) were in the range of 424–445°C in nitrogen and 415–430°C in air, respectively. All the PIs were endowed with high solubility in common organic solvents and could be cast into tough and flexible films, which exhibited good mechanical properties with tensile strengths of 76–105 MPa, elongations at break of 4.7–7.6%, and tensile moduli of 1.9–2.6 GPa. In particular, the PI films showed excellent optical transparency in the visible region with the cut‐off wavelengths of 369–375 nm owing to the introduction of trans‐1,2‐cyclohexane moiety into the main chain. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis and properties of soluble, high Tg and transparent aromatic polyimides containing 4,5‐diazafluorene and trifluoromethyl units in the polymer backbone on the basis of a novel diamine monomer, 9,9‐di[4‐(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethyl phenoxy)phenylene]‐4,5‐diazafluorene, are described. Incorporation of 4,5‐diazafluorene and trifluoromethyl groups into rigid polyimides improves their solubility and transparency without decreasing their physical properties. All of the thermal imidization polyimides are soluble at room temperature in aprotic and protic polar solvents such as N,N‐dimethylacetamide, N,N′‐dimethylformamide, dimethylsulfoxide, pyridine and m‐cresol and can be solution cast into transparent, flexible and tough films. These films have a UV–visible absorption cutoff wavelength at 386–407 nm and light transparencies of 73%–84% at a wavelength of 550 nm. In addition, the polymers exhibit high thermal stability with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 305 to 362 °C and 5% weight loss at temperatures ranging from 525 to 543 °C in nitrogen and from 521 to 538 °C in air. The polyimide films possess tensile strengths in the range 79 ? 113 MPa, a tensile modulus of 1.75 – 2.10 GPa and elongations at break of 7% ? 16%. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A novel, asymmetric diamine, 3‐(4‐aminophenylthio)‐N‐aminophthalimide, was prepared from 3‐chloro‐N‐aminophthalimide and 4‐aminobenzenethiol. The structure of the diamine was determined via IR and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. A series of polyimides were synthesized from 3‐(4‐aminophenylthio)‐N‐aminophthalimide and aromatic dianhydrides by a conventional two‐step method in N,N‐dimethylacetamide and by a one‐step method in phenols. These polyimides showed good solubility in 1‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone, m‐cresol, and p‐chlorophenol, except polyimide from pyromellitic dianhydride, which was only soluble in p‐chlorophenol. The 5% weight loss temperatures of these polyimides ranged from 460 to 498°C in air. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis indicated that the glass‐transition temperatures of the polyimides were in the range 278–395°C. The tensile strengths at break, moduli, and elongations of these polyimides were 146–178 MPa, 1.95–2.58 GPa, and 9.1–13.3%, respectively. Compared with corresponding polyimides from 4,4′‐diamiodiphenyl ether, these polymers showed enhanced solubility and higher glass‐transition temperatures. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel aromatic diamine, 1,1‐bis(4‐amino‐3,5‐dimethylphenyl)‐1‐(3,4,5‐trifluorophenyl)‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethane, containing a pendant polyfluorinated phenyl group, a trifluoromethyl group, and methyl groups ortho‐substituted to the amino groups in the structure was synthesized and characterized. The diamine was polymerized with several aromatic dianhydrides, including 3,3′,4,4′‐biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride, 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride, 4,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride, and 4,4′‐hexafluoroisopropylidene diphthalic anhydride, via a high‐temperature one‐step procedure to afford four polyimides (PIs) with inherent viscosities of 0.47–0.70 dL/g. The PIs exhibited excellent solubilities in a variety of organic solvents. They were soluble not only in polar aprotic solvents but in many common solvents, such as cyclopentanone, tetrahydrofuran, and even toluene at room temperature. The tough and flexible PI films cast from the PI solutions exhibited good thermal stabilities and acceptable tensile properties. The glass‐transition temperatures were in the range 312–365°C, and the 5% weight loss temperatures were all higher than 480°C in nitrogen. The films had tensile strengths in the range 76–99 MPa, tensile moduli of 2.2–2.8 GPa, and elongations at break of 5–8%. In addition, the PI films exhibited excellent transparency in the visible light region with cutoff wavelength as low as 302 nm and transmittance higher than 88% at the wavelength of 450 nm. The PI films showed low dielectric constants ranging from 2.50–2.68 and low moisture absorptions of less than 0.56%. The good combined properties of the PIs mainly resulted from the synergic effects of the different substituents. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

A series of polyimides were prepared from 2,3,2′,3′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride (3,3′‐ODPA) with various aromatic diamines via three different synthetic procedures. The one‐step and two‐step methods with the thermal imidization of poly(amic acids) (PAAs) yielded polyimides with a relatively low inherent viscosity; these produced brittle films. The polyimides prepared by the two‐step method via the chemical imidization of PAA precursors exhibited a higher inherent viscosity and afforded tough and creaseable films. All the 3,3′‐ODPA based polyimides had a significantly higher solubility than the corresponding polyimides from 3,4,3′,4′‐oxydiphthalic anhydride. The films cast from 3,3′‐ODPA polyimides also showed high optical transparencies and less color, with an ultraviolet–visible absorption edge of 370–397 nm and low yellowness index values of 11.3–29.8. These polyimides exhibited glass‐transition temperatures in the range 211–289°C and showed no significant decomposition below 500°C under nitrogen or air atmospheres. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel trifluoromethyl‐containing aromatic diamine monomer, 2,5‐bis (4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)biphenyl (2), was prepared through the nucleophilic substitution reaction of 2‐chloro‐5‐nitrobenzotrifluoride and phenylhydroquinone in the presence of potassium carbonate to yield the intermediate dinitro compound (1), followed by catalytic reduction with hydrazine and Pd/C. A series of fluorinated polyimides (code 5a–f) were synthesized from diamine (2) with six commercially available aromatic dianhydrides using a standard two‐stage process with thermal or chemical imidization of poly(amic acid). Most of fluorinated polyimides showed good solubility at a concentration of 5–10 wt % and even in pyridine and dioxane. For improving solubility of 5c, copolyimides (5c/a–f) were also prepared from 2 and a pair of dianhydrides (3c/a–f), which were mixed in the molar ratio 1:1. All the polyimide films had a tensile strength in the range from 73 to 112 MPa, an elongation at break within a range of 9–23%, and an initial modulus in the range of 1.6–2.2 GPa. These polyimides exhibited glass transition temperatures of 220–267°C and showed no significant decomposition below 500°C under either nitrogen or air atmosphere. In comparison with the analogous nonfluorinated polyimides based on 2,5‐bis (4‐aminophenoxy) biphenyl (2′), the fluorinated polyimides showed better solubility as well as reduced color intensity, lower dielectric constant, and moisture absorption. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fluorinated polyimides IVa–e were synthesized from the diamine mentioned above via a two‐step method (thermal and chemical imidization). Polyimides IVa–e have inherent viscosities in the range 0.65–1.06 dL g?1 (thermal imidization) and 0.82–1.56 dL g?1 (chemical imidization). The polyimides prepared by chemical imidization exhibit excellent solubility. Polyimide films exhibit tensile strength, elongation and tensile modulus in the ranges 96–106 MPa, 9–13% and 1.1–1.7 GPa, respectively. A series of novel homo‐ and copolyimides containing pyridine units were prepared from the heteroaromatic diamines, 2,5‐bis (4‐aminophenyl) pyridine and 2‐(4‐aminophenyl)‐5‐aminopyridine, with pyromelltic dianhydride (PMDA), and 3,3′, 4,4′‐biphenyl tertracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) via a conventional two‐step thermal imidizaton method. The poly(amic acid) precursors have inherent viscosities of 1.60–9.64 dL/g (c = 0.5 g/dL in DMAC, 30°C) and all of them can be cast and thermally converted into flexible and tough polyimide films. All of the polyimides show excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties. The polyimides have 10% weight loss temperature in the range of 548–598°C in air. The glass transition temperatures of the PMDA‐based samples are in the range of 395–438°C, while the BPDA‐based polyimides show two glass transition temperatures (Tg1 and Tg2), ranging from 268 to 353°C and from 395 to 418°C, respectively. The flexible films possess tensile modulus in the range of 3.42–6.39 GPa, strength in the range of 112–363 MPa and an elongation at break in the range of 1.2–69%. The strong reflection peaks in the wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction patterns indicate that the polyimides have a high packing density and crystallinity. The polymer films are insoluble in common organic solvents exhibiting high chemical resistance. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 102: 1844–1851, 2006  相似文献

A series of novel ternary‐copolymer of fluorinated polyimides (PIs) were prepared from 1,4‐bis(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)benzene (pBATB), commercially available aromatic dianhydrides, and aromatic diamines via a conventional two‐step thermal or chemical imidization method. The structures of all the obtained PIs were characterized with FTIR, 1H‐NMR, and element analysis. Besides, the solubility, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and moisture uptakes of the PIs were investigated. The weight‐average molecular weight (Mw) and the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) of the PIs were determined using gel‐permeation chromatography (GPC). The PIs were readily dissolved not only in polar solvents such as DMF, DMAc, and NMP, but also in some common organic solvents, such as acetic ester, chloroform, and acetone. The glass transition temperatures of these PIs ranged from 201 to 234°C and the 10% weight loss temperatures ranged from 507 to 541°C in nitrogen. Meanwhile, all the PIs left around 50% residual even at 800°C in nitrogen. The GPC results indicated that the PIs possessed moderate‐to‐high number‐average molecular weight (Mn), ranging from 9609 to 17,628. Moreover, the polymer films exhibited good mechanical properties, with elongations at break of 8–21%, tensile strength of 66.5–89.8 MPa, and Young's modulus of 1.04–1.27 GPa, and low moisture uptakes of 0.54–1.13%. These excellent combination properties ensure that the polymer could be considered as potential candidates for photoelectric and microelectronic applications. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Two new aromatic diamines, 2,2′‐dibromo‐4,4′‐oxydianiline (DB‐ODA 4 ) and 2,2′,6,6′‐tetrabromo‐4,4′‐oxydianiline (TB‐ODA 5 ), have been synthesized by oxidation, bromination, and reduction of 4,4′‐oxydianiline (4,4′‐ODA). Novel polyimides 6a–f and 7a–f were prepared by reacting DB‐ODA ( 4 ) and TB‐ODA ( 5 ) with several dianhydrides by one‐step method, respectively. The inherent viscosities of these polyimides ranged from 0.31 to 0.99 dL/g (0.5 g/dL, in NMP at 30°C). These polyimides showed enhanced solubilities compared to those derived from 4,4′‐oxydianiline and corresponding dianhydrides. Especially, polyimides 7a , derived from rigid PMDA and TB‐ODA ( 5 ) can also be soluble in THF, DMF, DMAc, DMSO, and NMP. These polyimides also exhibited good thermal stability. Their glass transition temperatures measured by thermal mechanical analysis (TMA) ranged from 251 to 328°C. When the same dianhydrides were used, polyimides 7 containing four bromide substituents had higher glass transition temperatures than polyimides 6 containing two bromide substituents. The effects of incorporating more polarizable bromides on the refractive indices of polyimides were also investigated. The average refractive indices (nav) measured at 633 nm were from 1.6088 to 1.7072, and the in‐plane/out‐of‐plane birefringences (Δn) were from 0.0098 to 0.0445. It was found that the refractive indices are slightly higher when polyimides contain more bromides. However, this effect is not very obvious. It might be due to loose chain packing resulted from bromide substituents at the 2,2′ and 2,2′,6,6′ positions of the oxydiphenylene moieties. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
