Adhesive bonding of components has become more efficient in recent years due to the developments in adhesive technology, which has resulted in higher peel and shear strengths, and also in allowable ductility up to failure. As a result, fastening and riveting methods are being progressively replaced by adhesive bonding, allowing a big step towards stronger and lighter unions. However, single-lap bonded joints still generate substantial peel and shear stress concentrations at the overlap edges that can be harmful to the structure, especially when using brittle adhesives that do not allow plasticization in these regions. In this work, a numerical and experimental study is performed to evaluate the feasibility of bending the adherends at the ends of the overlap for the strength improvement of single-lap aluminium joints bonded with a brittle and a ductile adhesive. Different combinations of joint eccentricity were tested, including absence of eccentricity, allowing the optimization of the joint. A Finite Element stress and failure analysis in ABAQUS® was also carried out to provide a better understanding of the bent configuration. Results showed a major advantage of using the proposed modification for the brittle adhesive, but the joints with the ductile adhesive were not much affected by the bending technique.  相似文献

The emerging trends for joining of aircraft structural parts made up of different materials are essential for structural optimization. Adhesively bonded joints are widely used in the aircraft structural constructions for joining of the similar and dissimilar materials. The bond strength mainly depends on the type of adhesive and its properties. Dual adhesive bonded single lap joint concept is preferred where there is large difference in properties of the two dissimilar adherends and demanding environmental conditions. In this work, Araldite-2015 ductile and AV138 brittle adhesives have been used separately between the dissimilar adherends such as, CFRP and aluminium adherends. In the dual adhesive case, the ductile adhesive Araldite-2015 has been used at the ends of the overlap because of high shear and peel strength, whereas in the middle of the bonded region the brittle adhesive AV138 has been used at different dimensions. The bond strength and corresponding failure patterns have been evaluated. The Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method has been used to monitor the relative displacements between the dissimilar adherends. Finite element analysis (FEA) has been carried-out using ABAQUS software. The variation of peel and shear stresses along the single and dual adhesive bond length have been captured. Comparison of experimental and numerical studies have been carried-out and the results of numerical values are closely matching with the experimental values. From the studies it is found that, the use of dual adhesive helps in increasing the bond strength.  相似文献

Bi-adhesive joints are an alternative stress-reduction technique for adhesively bonded joints. The joints have two types of adhesives in the overlap region. The stiff adhesive should be located in the middle and the flexible adhesive at the ends. This study is the extension of our previous paper to the von Mises stress evaluation and discusses the values and importance of the von Mises stresses in the bi-adhesive single-lap joint. Both analytical and numerical analyses were performed using three different bi-adhesive bondline configurations. The Zhao’s closed form (analytic) solution used includes the bending moment effect. In the finite element models, overlap surfaces of the adherends and the adhesives were modeled using surface-to-surface contact elements. The contribution levels of the peel and shear stresses for producing a peak von Mises stress are also studied. It is concluded that the contribution level of the shear stress at where von Mises stress becomes peak is more than that of the peel stress. Joint strength analyses were performed based on the peak elastic von Mises stresses. It is seen that joint strength can be increased using bi-adhesive bondline. The analytical and numerical results show that the appropriate bond-length ratio must be used to obtain high joint strength.  相似文献

Generally, all failures in adhesively-bonded joints begin at the overlap ends because of the stress concentration occurring at the ends. The approach which reduces stress concentration at the overlap ends increases the load capacity and delays the failure. The lower the stiffness of the adhesive used, the lower the stress concentration, and the lower stress concentration gives rise to higher joint strength. In this work, the results of the application of two adhesives, one stiff and one flexible, with very different mechanical behaviors along the overlap length in double strap joints subjected to bending moment, were analyzed. A stiff adhesive was applied in the middle portion of overlap, while a flexible adhesive was applied towards the edges. The results show that the bi-adhesively-bonded joints carry more loads and have higher strength when compared with single-adhesively-bonded joints.  相似文献

The joints are usually the weakest part of the engineering structures. In this study, the employment of wavy edges for increasing the adhesive joint load-bearing capacity is considered. The effects of geometric parameters of the wavy edges on the strength of the adhesive joints were investigated, experimentally. Two different adhesives, Araldite 2015 and Epoxy RL440/HY441 as ductile and brittle adhesives were used, respectively. The finite element model was also developed for more investigation. The joint stress distributions were used successfully to explain the experimental observations. For the appropriate wavy joint configuration, compressive peel stress on the both ends of the adhesive led to a considerable delay in damage initiation and consequently increased the joint strength. The effects of geometrical parameters of the wavy edge on the joint strength were also examined. For the optimum configuration, the joint with wavy edge offered 32% more strength than the flat single lap joint.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to better understand the effect of the change in the geometry of the adherend corners on the stress distribution in single lap joints and, therefore, on the joint strength. Various degrees of rounding were studied and two different types of adhesives were used: one very brittle and another which had a large plastic deformation. Experimental results on the strength of joints with different degrees of rounding are presented. For joints bonded with brittle adhesives, the effect of the rounded adherend corners is larger than that with ductile adhesives. The strength of joints with brittle adhesives with a large radius adherend corner increases by about 40% compared to that with a sharp adherend corner. It is shown that for joints bonded with brittle adhesives, crack propagation occurs for a short period before it grows into catastrophic failure. However, for ductile adhesives, there is large adhesive yielding and small crack propagation before final failure. Another important feature of joints bonded with ductile adhesives is that there may be more than one crack in the adhesive layer before failure. This makes strength predictions more difficult. The second part of the paper presents an approximate method for predicting the strength of joints bonded with brittle and ductile adhesives, with and without adherend corner rounding. The predictions, based on an average value around the singularity, compare well with the experimental results, especially for joints bonded with ductile adhesives.  相似文献

In this work, elasto-plastic stress analysis of single lap joints with and without protrusion in adhesive bondline subjected to tension and bending was carried out using 2D non-linear finite element analysis and confirmed experimentally. AA 2024-T3 aluminum adherends were bonded with SBT 9244 film adhesive. The protrusion was obtained by extending the adhesive film by 2?mm from the overlap length at both overlap ends. Three different adherend thicknesses and overlap lengths for each loading and bondline type were used. The joints with and without protrusion, for comparison, were loaded with the same load for each adherend thickness and overlap length. Finally, it was observed that the protrusion reduces the strength in the joint under tension, while the protrusion increases the strength in the joint under bending.  相似文献

The main objective of the present study was to use a functionally modified adhesive in order to have an adhesive with properties that vary gradually along the overlap, allowing a uniform stress distribution along the overlap. This allows for a stronger and more efficient adhesive joint. It is possible to work with much smaller areas, reducing considerably the weight of the structure and obtaining more reliable joints. The adhesive stiffness would vary along the overlap, being maximum in the middle and minimum at the ends of the overlap. The processes tested in this work were dielectric heating using a domestic microwave oven and conventional oven heating. Different amounts of carbon black were used and functionally dispersed along the bondline length in order to obtain a functionally graded joint. The functionally graded joints were found to have a higher joint strength compared to the cases where the carbon black was dispersed uniformly along the overlap or where the adhesive was used without carbon black. An analytical model was used to assist with the prediction and the assessment of the possible effectiveness of a graded joint concept.  相似文献

Experimental tests and finite element method (FEM) simulation were implemented to investigate T700/TDE86 composite laminate single-lap joints with different adhesive overlap areas and adherend laminate thickness. Three-dimensional finite element models of the joints having various overlap experimental parameters have been established. The damage initiation and progressive evolution of the laminates were predicted based on Hashin criterion and continuum damage mechanics. The delamination of the laminates and the failure of the adhesive were simulated by cohesive zone model. The simulation results agree well with the experimental results, proving the applicability of FEM. Damage contours and stress distribution analysis of the joints show that the failure modes of single-lap joints are related to various adhesive areas and adherend thickness. The minimum strength of the lap with defective adhesive layer was obtained, but the influence of the adhesive with defect zone on lap strength was not decisive. Moreover, the adhesive with spew-fillets can enhance the lap strength of joint. The shear and normal stress concentrations are severe at the ends of single-lap joints, and are the initiation of the failure. Analysis of the stress distribution of SL-2-0.2-P/D/S joints indicates that the maximum normal and shear stresses of the adhesive layer emerge on the overlap ends along the adhesive length. However, for the SL-2-0.2-D joint, the maximum normal stress emerges at the adjacent middle position of the defect zone along the adhesive width; for the SL-2-0.2-S joint, the maximum normal stress and shear stress emerge on both edges along the adhesive width.  相似文献

Hybrid-adhesive joints are an alternative stress reduction technique for adhesively bonded joints. The joints have two types of adhesives in the overlap region. The stiff adhesive should be located in the middle and flexible adhesive at the ends. In this study, the effect of the hybrid-adhesive bondline on the shear and peeling stresses of a double lap joint were investigated using a three-dimensional finite element model. We developed a three dimensional model of the double lap joint based on solid and contact elements. Contact problem is considered to model the interface as two surfaces belonging to adherend and adhesive. Finite element analyses were performed for four different bond-length ratios (0.2,0.4,0.7 and 1.3). The results show that the stress components can be optimized using appropriate bond-length ratios. To validate the finite element analysis results, comparisons were made with available closed-form solutions. The numerical results were found in good agreement with the analytical solutions.  相似文献

Nowadays, there is a strong trend towards the use of functionally graded materials, with particular importance for the functionally graded joints. The main objective of this work was to study a functionally modified adhesive in order to have mechanical properties that vary gradually along the overlap of a joint, allowing a uniform stress distribution along the overlap. This allows for a stronger and more efficient adhesive joint and would permit to work with much smaller areas, reducing considerably the weight of the structure which is a key factor in the transport industry. In the proposed joint, the adhesive stiffness varies along the overlap, being maximum in the middle and minimum at the ends of the overlap. The functionally graded joint was found to have a higher joint strength compared to the cases where the adhesive has homogeneous properties along the overlap. A simple analytical model to study the performance of the functionally graded joints was developed. The differential equation of this model was solved by a power series. Numerical modelling by finite element analysis was performed to validate the analytical model developed.  相似文献

One of the major difficulties in designing adhesive lap joints is the stress singularity present at the adherend corners at the ends of the overlap. One way to overcome this problem is to assume that the corners have a certain degree of rounding. The objective of the present study was to better understand the effect of the change in the geometry of the adherend corners on the stress distribution and, therefore, on the joint strength. Various degrees of rounding were studied and two different types of adhesives were used, one very brittle and another which could sustain a large plastic deformation. The study gives a detailed stress and strain distribution around the rounded adherends using the finite element method. The major finding is that the stresses or strains in the adhesive layer of a joint with rounded adherend corners are finite. In real joints, adherends generally have small rounded corners. Consequently, the model with small radius corners may be used to represent real adherends.  相似文献

The need of joining methods that best meet the design requirements has led to the increased use of adhesive joints at the expense of welding, fastening and riveting. Hybrid weld-bonded joints are obtained by combining adhesive bonding with a welded joint, providing superior strength and stiffness, and higher resistance to peeling and fatigue. In the present work, an experimental and numerical study of welded, adhesive and hybrid (weld-bonded) T-peel joints under peeling loads is presented. The brittle Araldite® AV138, the moderately ductile Araldite® 2015 and the ductile Sikaforce® 7752 were the considered adhesives. An analysis of the experimental values and a comparison of these values with Finite Element Method (FEM) results in Abaqus® were carried out, which included a stress analysis in the adhesive and strength prediction by Cohesive Zone Models (CZM) considering failure simulation of both the adhesive layer and weld-nugget. It was found that the Sikaforce® 7752 performs best in the bonded and hybrid configurations. The good agreement between the experimental and numerical results enabled the validation of CZM to predict the strength of adhesive and hybrid T-peel joints, giving a basis for reducing the design time and enabling the optimization of these joints.  相似文献

Abstract

Adhesive bonding is the best alternative to riveting in aircraft structures but the strength of the adhesive bonded joint is low and is limited by strength of adhesive. Strengthening of adhesive bonding is an important requirement. In this work, an attempt has been made to strengthen the adhesive bonding by mixing different quantities of brittle adhesive in the ductile adhesive and vice-versa. Two different adhesives, one brittle (AV138) and another ductile (Araldite-2015) adhesive have been considered. Initially single lap joint has been constructed between the CFRP and aluminium with individual adhesives, then the mixture of adhesives have been used in the bonded region in varied proportions. The X-ray radiography and ultrasonic testing have been performed to check the quality of bonding. Uniaxial tensile tests have been conducted on the lap joints along with Digital Image Correlations (DIC) to obtain the individual and mixed adhesive bond strength. The failure patterns have been identified using optical and scanning electron microscope. These studies indicate that strengthening of the adhesive bonding achieved by mixing of two adhesives and highest bond strength obtained when the mixture of AV138 and Araldite-2015 adhesives are used in equal proportions.  相似文献

In this paper, environmental strength degradation of 180 different adhesive single lap joints (SLJ), including mono-adhesive Araldite 2015, mono-adhesive Araldite AV138, and a mixed-adhesive of Araldite 2015 and Araldite AV138 subjected to moist conditions are experimentally studied. Four different moist conditions, i.e. dry, 75.3, 84.2 RH% and immersion in tap water, have been taken into consideration and the specimens are tested after exposing to these environments at room temperature for 0, 35, 80 and 270 days. The specimens have been tested in two different strain rate, i.e. 1 mm/min and 100 mm/min. The results reveal that although, in a dry environment, mixed-adhesive joints have higher failure loads in comparison to mono-adhesive SLJs, in a moist environment, they have the highest reduction in static failure load with regard to the mono-adhesive ones. Moreover, despite the finally brittle trend in failure load, mixed-adhesives manifest a behavior very similar to ductile mono-adhesives regarding elongation. Analytical predictions of failure load are also consistent with the experimental observations in dry condition.  相似文献

Four-point bend tests were performed on single lap joints with hard steel adherends and a structural epoxy adhesive. The effect of the overlap, the adherend thickness and the adhesive thickness was studied. It was found that the length of the overlap has no significant effect on the strength of the joints. This is because the load transfer is occurring in a very localised area around the edges of the overlap, being the failure governed by peel mechanisms. The thickness of the adherends strongly affects the strength of the joints. The thicker the adherend, the stronger is the joint. The experimental results are compared with a finite element model and reinforce the fact that the failure takes place due to local strains at the ends of the overlap in tension. An analytical model is also given to predict in a simple but effective way the joint strength and its dependence on the adherend thickness.  相似文献

Adhesively bonded joints are widely used in a variety of industrial and engineering activities. Their overall strength is dependent on the properties of the adhesives. In the present research, assessments of adhesive properties were performed systematically through defining both strength mixity and energy rate mixity and using them to characterize the overall strength of metallic single lap joints. By means of the cohesive zone model, the adhesive strength mixity was defined as the ratio of the shear and tensile separation strength, and the energy rate mixity was defined as the ratio of the area below the shear cohesive curve and the area below the tensile cohesive curve. For each specified group of mixity parameters, corresponding to the properties of a specified adhesive, the overall strengths and the critical displacements of bonded joints were characterized. A series of strength and energy rate mixities were taken into account in the present calculations. A comparison of the present calculations with some existing experiments was carried out for both brittle and ductile adhesives. Finally, in the calculations presented here, damage initiation and evolution of the adhesive layer were also undertaken. The results showed that the overall strength of the joints was significantly depended on the adhesive properties, which were characterized by the strength and energy rate mixities of the adhesive. Furthermore, the shear adhesive stress components played a dominate role in both the damage initiation and evolution in the adhesives, which were also affected by the overlap length of the joints.  相似文献

This paper describes a two-part investigation into the effect of local geometry changes at the edges of the overlap in single lap joints. In the first part, finite element analysis has been used to model the effects on the stress distribution of geometry changes which are small in relation to the dimensions of the local geometry, in order to provide an improved model for failure prediction. The model used is that of an adhesive around a rigid corner, and the effect of rounding the corner has been considered.The second part deals with local geometry changes of the same order of magnitude as the dimensions of the geometry and their effect on joint strength. Three types of joint — one with a square-edged adhesive layer, one with a fillet of adhesive and one with an adhesive fillet plus a radiused adherend — were manufactured, tested and analysed. Improvements to the finite element models were also made following the results of part 1.It is found that finite element analysis is capable of predicting the significant strength increases that may be achieved in single lap joints by filleting the adhesive at the edges of the overlap and rounding the ends of the adherends.  相似文献

The single lap joint is the most studied type of adhesive joint in the literature. However, the joint strength prediction of such joints is still a controversial issue as it involves a lot of factors that are difficult to quantify such as the overlap length, the yielding of the adherend, the plasticity of the adhesive and the bondline thickness. The most complicated case is that where the adhesive is brittle and the overlap long. In any case, there is still a problem that is even more difficult to take into account which is the durability. There is a lack of experimental data and design criteria when the joint is subjected to high, low or variable temperature and/or humidity. The objective of this work is to carry out and quantify the various variables affecting the strength of single lap joints in long term, especially the effect of the surface preparation. The Taguchi method is used to decrease the number of experimental tests. The effect of material, geometry, surface treatment and environment is studied and it is shown that the main effect is that of the overlap length.In order to quantify the influence of the adhesive (toughness and thickness), the adherend (yield strength and thickness), the overlap, the test speed, the surface preparation and durability on the lap shear strength, the experimental design technique of Taguchi was used in the present study. An experimental matrix of 18 tests was designed and each test was repeated three times. The influence of the eight previously-mentioned variables could be assessed using the statistical software Statview®. In this paper a simple predictive equation is proposed for the design of single lap joints.  相似文献

Bonded unions are gaining importance in many fields of manufacturing owing to a significant number of advantages to the traditional fastening, riveting, bolting and welding techniques. Between the available bonding configurations, the single-lap joint is the most commonly used and studied by the scientific community due to its simplicity, although it endures significant bending due to the non-collinear load path, which negatively affects its load bearing capabilities. The use of material or geometric changes in single-lap joints is widely documented in the literature to reduce this handicap, acting by reduction of peel and shear peak stresses at the damage initiation sites in structures or alterations of the failure mechanism emerging from local modifications. In this work, the effect of hole drilling at the overlap on the strength of single-lap joints was analyzed experimentally with two main purposes: (1) to check whether or not the anchorage effect of the adhesive within the holes is more preponderant than the stress concentrations near the holes, arising from the sharp edges, and modification of the joints straining behaviour (strength improvement or reduction, respectively) and (2) picturing a real scenario on which the components to be bonded are modified by some external factor (e.g. retrofitting of decaying/old-fashioned fastened unions). Tests were made with two adhesives (a brittle and a ductile one) varying the adherend thickness and the number, layout and diameter of the holes. Experimental testing showed that the joints strength never increases from the un-modified condition, showing a varying degree of weakening, depending on the selected adhesive and hole drilling configuration.  相似文献
