In 2001, architect Diébédo Francis Kéré completed the design and construction of a primary school for his home village of Gando in Burkina Faso. Raising funds through an organisation in Berlin, he applied the knowledge gained through his architectural education and associates in Germany to design the school in local sustainable materials. For its realisation, he drew on valuable village resources, with the on-site labour being undertaken by the hands of the men, women and children of Gando.  相似文献

Frank Lloyd Wright's Smith House is located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. It was designed in 1946 for Melvyn Maxwell Smith and Sarah Smith. Melvyn Smith was a high school social studies teacher. Sarah Smith, now retired, was an elementary school teacher. Melvyn Smith first learned about Frank Lloyd Wright's work in an art and architecture survey course he took when he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit. The Smiths visited Taliesin for the first time during a vacation trip in 1941. At Taliesin, they discussed with Wright the possibility of his designing a house for them. The outbreak of World War II forced postponement of any further discussions until Melvyn Smith's return from the service in 1946. This interview is an edited version of John Donoian's research project for a seminar devoted to Frank Lloyd Wright and taught by Dennis Doordan at Tulane University.  相似文献

W.B. Yeats' restoration and recreation of Ballylee Castle in the west of Ireland from 1916 as ‘Thoor Ballylee’ saw it become the symbol and metaphor of his work as a poet. With the help of the architect, William Scott, an exponent of the English Arts and Crafts school, Yeats placed the tower and its landscape at the centre of his vision of the Irish past. The Arts and Crafts aesthetic that underpinned Yeats' idealisation of Irish society opposed and decried the modernisation of rural Ireland, attempting to preserve it as an idyll for the urban intelligentsia. In his appropriation and reconstruction of Ballylee Castle Yeats sought both to locate himself amongst the peasantry of the west of Ireland whom he idealised in his work and to reassert his own roots amongst the dying colonial order. This paper explores the ambivalence of Yeats' cultural nationalism against the backdrop of republican violence and the emergence of the Free State.  相似文献
