A major factor limiting the use of ultrafiltration (UF) membrane in water treatment process is the membrane fouling by natural organic matter such as humic acid (HA). In this work, neat PVDF and PVDF/TiO2 mixed‐matrix membranes were prepared and compared in terms of their antifouling properties. Two commercial types of TiO2 namely PC‐20 and P25 were embedded to prepare the mixed matrix membranes via in situ colloidal precipitation method. The contact angles for the mixed‐matrix membranes were slightly reduced while the zeta potential was increased (more negatively charged) compared with the neat membrane. Filtration of HA with the presence of Ca2+ demonstrated that mixed‐matrix membrane could significantly mitigate the fouling tendency compared with the neat membrane with flux ratio (J/J0) of 0.65, 0.70, and 0.82 for neat PVDF membrane, PVDF/TiO2 mixed‐matrix membrane embedded with P25 and PC‐20, respectively. PC‐20 with higher anatase polymorphs exhibited better antifouling properties due to its hydrophilicity nature. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献

Immobilized titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles on flat sheet polymeric membranes have been found effective for fouling reduction in recent researches. The main challenge in this field is to obtain ultrafine and stable nanodispersions. In this study, composite polyvinylidene fluoride/TiO2 (PVDF/TiO2) ultrafiltration membranes were prepared via phase inversion and colloidal precipitation method. Stable TiO2 suspensions were prepared using sodium polymethacrylate as dispersant and sonication without altering of the coagulation bath pH. The effect of different concentrations of TiO2 nanoparticles in the coagulation bath was also investigated. The membrane morphology (distribution of nanoparticles on the membrane surface) was observed by scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. Properties of the neat and the composite membranes were also characterized using energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy and contact angle and membrane porosity measurements. The neat and the composite membranes were further investigated in terms of bovine serum albumin rejection and flux decline in cross flow filtration experiments. The results showed that the PVDF/TiO2 composite membrane using dimethylacetamide/triethyl phosphate as solvent and 0.05 g/L of TiO2 in the coagulation bath exhibits improved antifouling properties. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are widely used in drinking water and wastewater applications. These membranes are prone to fouling and membrane efficiency decreases with time under constant operation. Significant improvements/modifications are necessary to apply these polymers as sustainable membrane materials. In this study, PVDF and PAN UF membranes were modified through incorporation of nanoparticles (NPs) namely SiO2 and TiO2. PVDF and PAN UF membranes were prepared by phase inversion method from polymer solutions having dispersed SiO2 and TiO2 NPs in it. Membrane surface hydrophilicity, charge, roughness, and morphology were studied. Equilibrium water content and molecular weight cut-off of the membranes were also measured. Addition of NPs increased membrane surface hydrophilicity, equilibrium water content, and surface potential. NPs modified membranes exhibited better membrane flux (35–79% higher) and antifouling properties (flux recovery ratio values 28–41% higher) than the virgin membranes.  相似文献

In this study, PVA‐SiO2 was synthesized by modifying silica (SiO2) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), then a novel polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was prepared by incorporating the prepared PVA‐SiO2 into membrane matrix using the non‐solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The effects of PVA‐SiO2 particle on the properties of the PVDF membrane were systematically studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), surface pore size, porosity, and water contact angle. The results indicated that with the addition of PVA‐SiO2 particles in the PVDF UF membranes, membrane mean pore size increased from 80.06 to 126.00 nm, porosity improved from 77.4% to 89.1%, and water contact angle decreased from 75.61° to 63.10°. Furthermore, ultrafiltration experiments were conducted in terms of pure water flux, bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection, and anti‐fouling performance. It indicated that with the addition of PVA‐SiO2 particles, pure water flux increased from 70 to 126 L/m2 h, BSA rejection increased from 67% to 86%, flux recovery ratio increased from 60% to 96%, total fouling ratio decreased from 50% to 18.7%, and irreversible fouling ratio decreased from 40% to 4%. Membrane anti‐fouling property was improved, and it can be expected that this work may provide some references to the improvement of the anti‐fouling performance of the PVDF ultrafiltration membrane. Membrane fouling problem is now limiting the rapid development of membrane technology. A newly synthesized cationic polyionic liquid (PIL) [P(PEGMA-co-BVIm-Br)] was blended with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to prepare antifouling PVDF membranes. The PVDF/P(PEGMA-co-BVIm-Br) exhibited an increased surface hydrophilicity, the water contact angle was reduced from 77.8° (pristine PVDF) to 57.9°. More porous membrane structure was obtained by adding PIL into the blending polymers, as high as 478.0 L/m2·h of pure water flux was detected for the blend PVDF membrane in comparison with pristine PVDF (17.2 L/m2·h). Blending of the cationic PIL with PVDF gave a more positive surface charge than pristine PVDF membrane. Blend membranes showed very high rejection rate (99.1%) and flux recovery rate (FRR, 83.0%) to the positive bovine serum albumin (BSA), due to the electrostatic repulsion between the membrane surface and proteins. After three repeated filtration cycles of positive BSA, the blend PVDF membranes demonstrated excellent antifouling performance, the permeation flux of the membranes was recovered very well after a simple deionized water washing, and as high as 70% of FRR was obtained, the water flux was maintained at above 350 L/m2·h. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, polysulfone (PSF) hollow fiber membranes with enhanced performance for humic acid removal were prepared from a dope solution containing PSF/DMAc/PVP/TiO2. The main reason for adding titanium oxide during dope solution preparation was to enhance the antifouling properties of membranes prepared. In the spinning process, air gap distance was varied in order to produce different properties of the hollow fiber membranes. Characterizations were conducted to determine membrane properties such as pure water flux, molecular weight cut off (MWCO), humic acid (HA) rejection and resistance to fouling tendency. The results indicated that the pure water flux and MWCO of membranes increased with an increase in air gap distance while HA retention decreased significantly with increasing air gap. Due to this, it is found that the PSF/TiO2 membrane spun at zero air gap was the best amongst the membranes produced and demonstrated > 90% HA rejection. Analytical results from FESEM and AFM also provided supporting evidence to the experimental results obtained. Based on the anti-fouling performance investigation, it was found that membranes with the addition of TiO2 were excellent in mitigating fouling particularly in reducing the fouling resistances due to concentration polarization, cake layer formation and absorption.  相似文献

This study aims to investigate polysulfone (PSF) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) properties containing zirconium-based and titanium-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). for hemodialysis application. The nanoparticles were synthesized, and the membranes were produced by the phase inversion method. Membrane characterization conducted by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), field emission Scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) confirmed the presence of MOF nanoparticles. Also, the evaluation of the specific surface area of nanoparticles was done by BET. The water contact angle reduced from 64.4° to 51.2°, indicating the hydrophilicity improvement, enhancing the pure water flux from 46.8 L/m2h for the pristine membrane to 76.7 L/m2h for the pristine membrane M4. The total fouling resistance decreased from 30% to 21%, and the bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption of modified membranes was lower than that of the pristine membrane. Urea and creatinine were cleared significantly for modified ones, up to 82.6% and 72.1%, respectively, and all membranes showed BSA retention of more than 93%. A comparison between MMMs that contained UIO-66-NH2 and MIL-125-NH2 showed that the former had a better effect on the performance. M4 had better results, indicating high water flux, the lowest fouling resistance, high porosity, lower BSA adsorption, proper clearance for urea and creatinine, and 94.2% BSA retention.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pore-forming hydrophilic additives on the porous asymmetric polyvinylideneflouride (PVDF) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane morphology and transport properties for refinery produced wastewater treatment. PVDF ultrafiltration membranes were prepared via a phase inversion method by dispersing lithium chloride monohydrate (LiCl·H2O) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles in the spinning dope. The morphological and performance tests were conducted on PVDF ultrafiltration membranes prepared from a different additive content. The top surface and cross-sectional area of the membranes were observed using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The surface wettability of porous membranes was determined by the measurement of a contact angle. The mean pore size and surface porosity were calculated based on the permeate flux. The results indicated that the PVDF/LiCl/TiO2 membranes with lower TiO2 nanoparticles loading possessed smaller mean pore size, more apertures inside the membrane with enhanced membrane hydrophilicity. LiCl·H2O has been employed particularly to reduce the thermodynamic miscibility of dope which resulted in increasing the rate of liquid–liquid demixing process. The maximum flux and rejection of refinery wastewater using PVDF ultrafiltration membrane achieved were 82.50 L/m2 h and 98.83% respectively at 1.95 wt.% TiO2 concentration.  相似文献

Cellulose acetate butyrate/TiO2 hybrid membranes were prepared via phase inversion by dispersing the TiO2 nanoparticles in casting solutions. The influence of TiO2 nanoparticles on the morphology and performance of membranes was investigated. The scanning electron microscope images and experiments of membrane performance showed that the membrane thickness and pure water flux were first increased by adding the TiO2 nanoparticles to the casting solution up to 4 wt% and then decreased with the addition of further nanoparticles to it. The obtained results indicated that the addition of TiO2 in the casting solution enhanced the rejection and permeate flux in filtration of bovine serum albumin solution. Furthermore, increasing the TiO2 nanoparticle concentration in the casting solution increased the flux recovery and consequently decreased the fouling of membrane.  相似文献

With its ability to purify water and treat wastewater, photocatalytic membranes have become a promising solution. The membrane's unique properties allow for the separation of solid compounds and the degradation of organic materials through photocatalytic and antibacterial means. Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/titanium oxide (PVDF/TiO2) composite remain the materials of choice for making these membranes due to their economy, effectiveness, safety, and durability. In this work a photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR) system was developed using PVDF/TiO2 membranes fabricated by the solution blow spinning (SBS) process. Obtaining photocatalytic membranes using this method is an efficient and ecological route that overcomes the disadvantage of separating the photocatalyst after the treatment is complete. The results of PMR system showed that the PVDF/TiO2 membrane could effectively remove total coliforms and E. coli from polluted water. After 10 min of contaminated water circulation through the PMR system, the presence of pathogens was not detected, indicating the efficiency of the obtained membranes.  相似文献

A comparison of the morphology and performance of virgin poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane, and PVDF-composite membranes with low content of two different SiO2 (N-SiO2 and M-SiO2 particles) was carried out. Cross-sectional area and surface morphology of the membranes were observed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Surface hydrophilicity of the porous membranes was determined through the measurement of a contact angle. Performance tests were conducted on the composite membranes through water flux and bovine serum albumin (BSA) retention. Average pore size and surface porosity were calculated based on the permeate flux. Thermal stability and mechanical stability were determined by thermogravimetric analysis and tensile stress tests. The results indicate that N-SiO2/PVDF (P-N) membranes possessed larger average pore size and porosity, which led to higher water flux and a slight decline in BSA retention. On the other hand, M-SiO2/PVDF (P-M) membranes had better mechanical stability and anti-fouling performance with enhanced membrane hydrophilicity and decreased membrane surface roughness. Both of the P-N and P-M membranes exhibited typical asymmetric morphology and improved thermal stability.  相似文献

It is easy to adsorb the pollutants from water owning to the hydrophobicity of the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane. To improve the hydrophilicity of the PVDF UF membrane, a novel amphiphilic copolymer PVDF-g-poly-N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)methacrylamide] (PDMAPMA) was developed. The amphiphilic PVDF-g-PDMAPMA was synthesized with PVDF and N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)methacrylamide (DMAPMA) via free-radical polymerization, and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance. The scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to characterize the structure morphologies and elementals of the blend PVDF membranes, respectively. The pure water flux (PWF), molecular weight cutoff, and bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution filtration experiments were tested to evaluate the permeation performance and antifouling properties of the membranes. The experimental results showed that the PWF was 263.1 L m−2 h−1, BSA rejection rate was 98.1% and flux recovery rate was 95.1% of the prepared blend membrane which had obvious improvement compared with the pristine PVDF membrane (17.3 L m−2 h−1, 91.0, and 83.8%, respectively). The antibacterial activity test showed the prepared blend membrane had good potency against microorganisms. A novel hydrophilic PVDF membrane with good antibacterial properties was developed and would be promising for wastewater treatment. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide (N–TiO2) was prepared and supported on a novel copolymer grafted membrane matrix to avoid the problems associated with the removal of spent photocatalyst from treated water. Membranes of poly (methacrylic acid) grafted onto poly (vinylidene difluoride) and blended with poly (acrylonitrile) (PMAA-g-PVDF/PAN) were prepared through a dry–wet phase inversion technique. Methacrylic acid side chains were grafted onto an activated PVDF backbone by the method of reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization and then the novel photocatalytic asymmetric membranes of N–TiO2–PMAA-g-PVDF/PAN were prepared. The casting solutions were blended with 1–5 % N–TiO2 before immersion into the coagulation bath. PVDF and PAN offer several advantages which include: mechanical strength and toughness, chemical resistance, unaffected by long-term exposure to UV radiation, low weight, and thermal stability. N–TiO2 was prepared through sol-gel synthesis. The photocatalytic membranes were evaluated by degradation process of herbicide bentazon in water. Photodegradation studies revealed that the optimum photocatalyst loading was 3 % N–TiO2 and the optimum pH was 7 for the degradation of bentazon in water. UV–Vis, TOC and LC–MS analyses confirmed the successful photodegradation of bentazon. A bentazon removal efficiency of 90.1 % was achieved at pH 7. N–TiO2–PMAA-g-PVDF/PAN membranes were successfully prepared and characterized. These photocatalytic membranes showed great potential as a technology for the effective removal of pesticides from water. According to literature, N–TiO2–PMAA-g-PVDF/PAN asymmetric photocatalytic membranes have not been prepared before for the purpose of treating agricultural wastewater.  相似文献

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) was blended with a new amphiphilic copolymer, poly(tetrafluoroethylene‐co‐vinyl alcohol) [poly(TFE‐VA)], via non‐solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method to make membranes with superior antifouling properties. The effects of the VA/TFE segment ratio of the copolymer and the copolymer/PVDF blend ratio on the properties of the prepared membranes were studied. Membranes with similar water permeabilities, surface pore sizes, and rejection properties were prepared and used in bovine serum albumin (BSA) filtrations with the same initial water flux and almost the same operating pressure, to evaluate the sole effect of membrane material on fouling propensity. While the VA/TFE segment ratio strongly affected the membrane antifouling properties, the effects of the copolymer/PVDF blending ratio were not so drastic. Membrane surface hydrophilicity increased, and BSA adsorption and fouling decreased upon blending a small amount of amphiphilic copolymer with a high VA/TFE segment ratio with PVDF (copolymer/PVDF blending ratio 1:5). © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated using Fe3O4, and Al2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) were added to the polysulfone (PSf) and N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) solution. The nanocomposite membranes were fabricated using the NIPS (non-solvent induced phase separation) method. In order to create preferential permeation pathways for water across the MMMs, membrane formation is accomplished with an external magnetic field. Using magnetic casting cause the targeted placement of NPs in the best location and orientation. The performance of the prepared membranes was examined in terms of pure water flux and fouling parameters. Magnetic casting considerably increased pure water flux and decreased the total resistance of the optimum mixed matrix membrane, which contains 0.2% wt. of Fe3O4 NPs to 1175 L/m2h and 13.4 * 1011 (m−1), respectively. This is explained by the ordering of magnetic nanoparticles on the membrane sub-layer cast under the magnetic field of 500 mT, which changed the sub-layer structure. Less rough membrane surface of the mixed matrix membranes offered preferable anti-fouling properties against fouling by BSA proteins. The characterization of fabricated membranes was carried out using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and water contact angle measurement methods.  相似文献

The composite membranes of PVDF/TiO2 were prepared by a phase-inversion technique. Different amounts of TiO2 with respect to the weight of the polymer were incorporated in the casting solution to study qualitatively and quantitatively the antifouling property of the membrane. The membrane morphology was studied using a high-resolution scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, whereas the crystalline nature was studied using X-ray diffraction method. The interfacial interactions between foulants and TiO2 immobilized membranes were also evaluated using the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (XDLVO) approach. The XDLVO theory revealed an increase in repulsive interactive energy barrier with an increase in TiO2 loading, thus causing to improve the antifouling property of the membrane. Intercalation of TiO2 nanoparticles efficiently improved the porosity and wettability of the polymeric membranes, which could be confirmed by the contact angle analyzer analysis. The modified PVDF membranes exhibited excellent antimicrobial properties against Gram-negative Escherichia coli as confirmed from the halo zone and activity test. The permeation experimental results also showed high protein rejection of bovine serum albumin and humic acid (foulant) for membranes with optimum TiO2 loading of 0.01 g/g of PVDF polymer. However, at a concentration of 0.02 g TiO2/g of PVDF a negative effect on the membrane property was observed due to the former non-uniform distribution.

A photocatalytic activity ultrafiltration membrane (UFM) was prepared by the blending of a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer with mesoporous titanium dioxide (M‐TiO2) particles via the phase‐inversion method. The microstructure of the membrane and Ti element distribution were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy. Their properties were also determined by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, tensile stress tests, contact angle tests, bovine serum albumin retention, water flux, and permeation flux. When the M‐TiO2 concentration reached 1 wt %, the thermal stability, mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, flux, and antifouling performance of the M‐TiO2/PVDF UFM were improved to an optimal value with the M‐TiO2 particles successfully entrapped and evenly distributed throughout the PVDF polymer matrix. Compared with the P25‐modified PVDF UFM (1 wt %), the M‐TiO2‐modified PVDF UFM (1 wt %) exhibited better photocatalytic activity and wonderful stability in the UV photocatalytic degradation of the organic dye Rhodamine B. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel polycarbonate (PC) membrane was modified with titanium dioxide via nonsolvent-induced phase separation method to improve its hydrophilicity and antifouling properties in a submerged membrane system for the removal of humic acid (HA) both with and without polyaluminum chloride (PAC) coagulant. The effect of TiO2 additive on the morphology and performance of the nanocomposite membranes was studied by atomic force microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, mechanical properties, water contact angle, porosity, pure water flux, rejection tests, and antifouling parameters. The obtained results revealed that a higher critical flux was achieved by the PC/TiO2 nanocomposite membrane. The flux recovery ratio of the neat PC membrane increased with the addition of TiO2 nanoparticles and without PAC coagulant. HA removal for the PC nanocomposite membrane was higher than that of the neat PC membrane with and without PAC coagulant.  相似文献

Novel polyethersulfone (PES)/poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/titanium dioxide (TiO2) composite nanofiltration membranes were prepared by dip-coating of PES membrane in PVA and TiO2 nanoparticles aqueous solution. Glutaraldehyde (GA) was used as a cross-linker for the composite polymer membrane in order to enhance the chemical, thermal as well as mechanical stabilities. TiO2 nanoparticles with different concentrations (0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5 wt.%) were coated on the surface of PVA/PES composite membrane. The morphological study was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning surface microscopy (SEM) and along with X-ray diffraction (XRD). In addition, the membranes performances, in terms of permeate flux, ion rejection and swelling factor were also investigated. It was found that the increase in TiO2 solution concentration can highly affect the surface morphology and filtration performance of coated membranes. The contact angle measurement and XRD studies indicated that the TiO2 nanoparticles successfully were coated on the surface of PVA/PES composite membranes. However, rougher surface was obtained for membranes by TiO2 coating. The filtration performance data showed that the 0.1 wt.% TiO2-modified membrane presents higher performance in terms of flux and NaCl salt rejection. Finally, TiO2 modified membranes demonstrated the lower degree of swelling.  相似文献
