Hollow core mesoporous shell (HCMS) carbon has been explored for the first time as a cathode catalyst support in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). The HCMS carbon consisting of discrete spherical particles possesses unique structural characteristics including large specific surface area and mesoporous volume and well-developed interconnected void structure, which are highly desired for a cathode catalyst support in low temperature fuel cells. Significant enhancement in the electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction has been achieved by the HCMS carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles compared with carbon black Vulcan XC-72-supported ones in the DMFC. In addition, much higher power was delivered by the Pt/HCMS catalysts (i.e., corresponding to an enhancement of ca. 91–128% in power density compared with that of Pt/Vulcan), suggesting that HCMS carbon is a unique cathode catalyst support in direct methanol fuel cell. 相似文献

Membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) were prepared using PtRu black and 60 wt.% carbon-supported platinum (Pt/C) as their anode and cathode catalysts, respectively. The cathode catalyst layers were fabricated using various amounts of Pt (0.5 mg cm−2, 1.0 mg cm−2, 2.0 mg cm−2, and 3.0 mg cm−2). To study the effect of carbon support on performance, a MEA in which Pt black was used as the cathode catalyst was fabricated. In addition, the effect of methanol crossover on the Pt/C on the cathode side of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was investigated. The performance of the single cell that used Pt/C as the cathode catalyst was higher than single cell that used Pt black and this result was pronounced when highly concentrated methanol (above 2.0 M) was used as the fuel. 相似文献

LaNi0.9Ru0.1O3 as cathode catalyst for a direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) was synthesized and investigated for the first time. The electrochemical experiments indicated that perovskite-type oxide LaNi0.9Ru0.1O3 exhibited higher electrochemical performance compared with LaNiO3, which suggested incorporation of element Ru into LaNiO3 could further improve the catalytic ability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline solution. LaNi0.9Ru0.1O3 catalyst was found to have good tolerance of BH4−. Meanwhile the maximum power density of 171 mW cm−2 was obtained at 65 °C without using any precious ion exchange membrane. A life test indicated that the DBFC displayed no significant degradation for about 70 h testing. The electrochemical data suggested that LaNi0.9Ru0.1O3, which provided a simple way to construct DBFCs without using any ion exchange membrane, might be promising cathode catalyst with high performance and low cost for DBFCs. 相似文献

The cathode degradation of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was investigated after a 240 h discontinuous galvostatic operation at 80 °C. The catalyst coated membrane (CCM) and the cathode diffusion layer were not combined so as to isolate electrochemical and mass transport processes. It was indicated by the EDS and SEM tests that the loss of the cathode electrochemical surface area (ESA) was associated with the decays of the Pt/C catalyst and the interfacial contact. Furthermore, Ru crossover and higher methanol crossover resulting from the anode failure aggravated the degradation of the cathode. On the other hand, the change of the pore structure led to a higher wettability of the cathode microporous layer. Therefore, the oxygen transport was suppressed due to the decrease of hydrophobic passages. 相似文献

This work reports on the oxygen reduction activity of several non-precious metal (non-PGM) catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the fuel cell cathode, including pyrolyzed CoTPP, FeTPP, H2TMPP, and CoTMPP. Of the studied catalysts, pyrolyzed CoTMPP (Co-tetramethoxyphenylporphyrin) was found to perform significantly better than other materials. The catalyst underwent a thorough testing in both hydrogen-air polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) and direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). It was found that CoTMPP cathode can sustain currents that are only 2-3 times lower than those obtained with a conventional Pt-black cathode in an H2-air PEFC. DMFC experiments, including methanol crossover and methanol tolerance measurements, indicate high ORR selectivity of the CoTMPP catalyst. Based on results obtained to date, the CoTMPP-based catalyst offers promise for the use in conventional and mixed-reactant DMFCs operating with concentrated methanol feeds. However, hydrogen-air fuel cell life data, consisting of over 800 h of continuous cell operation, indicate that improvement to long-term stability of the CoTMPP catalyst will be required to make it practical. 相似文献

Pd-Co alloy has been recently proposed as a catalyst for the cathode of direct methanol fuel cells with both excellent oxygen reduction activity and methanol tolerance, hence electrodeposition of this alloy is an attractive approach for synthesizing porous metal electrodes with high methanol tolerance in direct methanol fuel cells. In this study, we electrodeposited two types of Pd-Co films onto Au substrates by applying different current density (−10 or −200 mA cm−2); and then characterized them in terms of morphology, composition, crystal structure, and catalytic activity. Pd-Co deposited at −10 mA cm−2 was smooth and possessed smaller particles (ca. 10 nm), while that at −200 mA cm−2 was dendritic (or rough) and possessed larger particles (ca. 50 nm). Both the Pd-Co alloys were found to be almost the same structure, i.e. a solid solution of ca. Pd7Co3 with Pd-skin, and also confirmed to possess comparable activity in oxygen reduction to Pt (potential difference at 1.0 μA cm−2 was 0.05 V). As for methanol tolerance, cell-voltage was not influenced by addition of 1 mol dm−3 methanol to the oxidant solution. Our approach provides fundamental technique for synthesizing Pd-Co porous metal electrodes by electrodeposition. 相似文献

The cathode catalyst layer (CL) in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) has been optimized through a balance of ionomer and porosity distributions, both playing important roles in affecting proton conduction and oxygen transport through a thick CL of DMFC. The effects of fabrication procedure, ionomer content, and Pt distribution on the microstructure and performance of a cathode CL under low air flowrate are investigated. Electrochemical methods, including electrochemical impedance, cyclic votammetry and polarization curves, are used in conjunction with surface morphology characterization to correlate electrochemical characteristics with CL microstructure. CLs in the form of catalyst-coated membrane (CCM) have higher cell open circuit voltages (OCVs) and higher limiting current density; while catalyzed-diffusion-media (CDM) CLs display better performance in the moderate current density region. The CL with a composite structure, consisting both CCM and CDM, shows better performance in both kinetic and mass-transport limitation region, due to a suitable ionomer distribution across the CL. This composite cathode is further evaluated in a full DMFC and the cathode performance loss due to methanol crossover is discussed. 相似文献

A 500 h life-test of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was conducted in a single cell. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that after life-test, the particle size of electrocatalysts increased both in anode and cathode, and the degree is higher in cathode. Electrochemical areas (ECAs) of anode and cathode catalyst were evaluated by CO-stripping and hydrogen-desorption test, respectively. It was found that the ECA loss is higher than the specific surface area (SSA) loss (determined by XRD) that merely due to the sintering of the electrocatalyst particles. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) revealed a crossover of ruthenium from the anode side to the cathode side in the cell. 相似文献

In this work, high-surface supported PtRu/C were prepared with Ru(NO)(NO3)3 and [Pt(H2NCH2CH2NH2)2]Cl2 as the precursors and hydrogen as a reducing agent. XRD and TEM analyses showed that the PtRu/C catalysts with different loadings possessed small and homogeneous metal particles. Even at high metal loading (40 wt.% Pt, 20 wt.% Ru) the mean metal particle size is less than 4 nm. Meanwhile, the calculated Pt crystalline lattice parameter and Pt (2 2 0) peak position indicated that the geometric structure of Pt was modified by Ru atoms. Among the prepared catalysts, the lattice parameter of 40-20 wt.% PtRu/C contract most. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA), CO stripping and single direct methanol fuel cell tests jointly suggested that the 40-20 wt.% PtRu/C catalyst has the highest electrochemical activity for methanol oxidation. 相似文献

The cathode catalyst layer in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) features a large thickness and mass transport loss due to higher Pt loading, and therefore must be carefully designed to increase the performance. In this work, the effects of Nafion loading, porosity distribution, and macro-pores on electrochemical characteristics of a DMFC cathode CL have been studied with a macro-homogeneous model, to theoretically interpret the related experimental results. Transport properties in the cathode catalyst layers are correlated to both the composition and microstructure. The optimized ionomer weight fraction (22%) is found to be much smaller than that in H2 polymer electrolyte fuel cells, as a result of an optimum balance of proton transport and oxygen diffusion. Different porosity distributions in the cathode CLs are investigated and a stepwise distribution is found to give the best performance and oxygen concentration profile. Influence of pore defects in the CLs is discussed and the location of macro-pores is found to play a dual role in affecting both oxygen transport and proton conduction, hence the performance. The reaction zone is extended toward the membrane side and the proton conduction is facilitated when the macro-pores are near the gas diffusion layer. 相似文献

The electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied at Pt and Pt alloyed with 30 atom% Ni in 1 M H2SO4 and in 1 M H2SO4/0.5 M CH3OH by means of rotating disc electrode. In pure sulphuric acid, the overpotential of ORR at 1 mA cm−2 is about 80 mV lower at Pt70Ni30 than at pure Pt. It was found that in methanol containing electrolyte solution the onset potential for oxygen reduction at PtNi is shifted to more positive potentials and the alloy catalyst has an 11 times higher limiting current density for oxygen reduction than Pt. Thus, PtNi as cathode catalyst should have a higher methanol tolerance for fuel cell applications. On the other hand, no significant differences in the methanol oxidation on both electrodes was found using cycling voltammetry, especially regarding the onset potential for methanol oxidation. During all the measurements no significant electrochemical activity loss was observed at Pt0.7Ni0.3. Ex-situ XPS investigations before and after the electrochemical experiments have revealed Pt enrichment in the first surface layers of the PtNi. 相似文献

This research is aimed to improve the utilization and activity of anodic catalysts, thus to lower the contents of noble metals loading in anodes for methanol electro-oxidation. The direct methanol fuel cell anodic catalysts, Pt-Ru-Ni/C and Pt-Ru/C, were prepared by chemical reduction method. Their performances were tested by using a glassy carbon working electrode through cyclic voltammetric curves, chronoamperometric curves and half-cell measurement in a solution of 0.5 mol/L CH3OH and 0.5 mol/L H2SO4. The composition of the Pt-Ru-Ni and Pt-Ru surface particles were determined by EDAX analysis. The particle size and lattice parameter of the catalysts were determined by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD analysis showed that both of the catalysts exhibited face-centered cubic structures and had smaller lattice parameters than Pt-alone catalyst. Their sizes are small, about 4.5 nm. No significant differences in the methanol electro-oxidation on both electrodes were found by using cyclic voltammetry, especially regarding the onset potential for methanol electro-oxidation. The electrochemically active-specific areas of the Pt-Ru-Ni/C and Pt-Ru/C catalysts are almost the same. But, the catalytic activity of the Pt-Ru-Ni/C catalyst is higher for methanol electro-oxidation than that of the Pt-Ru/C catalyst. Its tolerance performance to CO formed as one of the intermediates of methanol electro-oxidation is better than that of the Pt-Ru/C catalyst. 相似文献

Pt/TiOx/C nanocomposites have been synthesized by depositing hydrated titanium oxide on carbon-supported Pt (Pt/C), reducing H2PtCl6 with sodium formate on carbon-supported hydrated titanium oxide (TiO2/C), and simultaneously depositing hydrated titanium oxide and reducing H2PtCl6 with formate on carbon support, followed by heat treatment at 500 and 900 °C in 90% Ar-10% H2 mixture. The catalytic activity for oxygen reduction was evaluated in half cells with sulfuric acid electrolyte and in single direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). Tolerance to methanol was studied with half cells containing sulfuric acid mixed with methanol. Charge transfer resistance and electrochemical active surface area of the Pt/TiOx/C catalysts were studied with impedance and cyclic voltammetry measurements. Both the synthesis methods and heat treatments influence the catalytic activity, and some of the Pt/TiOx/C composites exhibit higher catalytic activity than Pt/C. The Pt/TiOx/C catalysts also exhibit better methanol tolerance than Pt/C. The mechanism for the enhanced catalytic activity of Pt/TiOx/C is discussed. 相似文献

The electrocatalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction on carbon supported Pt and Pt–Co (Pt/C and Pt–Co/C) alloy electrocatalysts was investigated in sulphuric acid (both in the absence and in the presence of methanol) and in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). In pure sulphuric acid Pt–Co/C alloys showed improved specific activity towards the oxygen reduction compared to pure platinum. In the methanol containing electrolyte a higher methanol tolerance of the binary electrocatalysts than Pt/C was observed. The onset potential for methanol oxidation at Pt–Co/C was shifted to more positive potentials. Accordingly, Pt–Co/C electrocatalyts showed an improved performance as cathode materials in DMFCs. 相似文献

Sulfated zirconia supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes as new supports of Pt catalyst (Pt–S-ZrO2/MWCNT) was synthesized with aims to enhance electron and proton conductivity and also catalytic activity of Pt electrocatalyst in terms of larger concentrations of ionizable OH groups on surfaces. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis shows that the sample surfaces were modified with sulfate. Transmission electron microscopy results show that the Pt and sulfated ZrO2 particles dispersed relatively uniformly on the surface of the multi-walled carbon nanotube. X-ray diffraction shows that S-ZrO2 and Pt coexist in the Pt–S-ZrO2/MWCNT composites and S-ZrO2 has no effect on the crystalline lattice of Pt. Pt–S-ZrO2/MWCNT catalyst was evaluated in terms of the electrochemical activity for methanol electro-oxidation using cyclic voltammetry, steady-state polarization experiments and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique at room temperature. Pt–S-ZrO2/MWCNT catalyst show higher catalytic activity for methanol electro-oxidation compared with Pt catalyst on non-sulfated ZrO2/MWCNT support and commercial Pt/C (E-TEK). 相似文献

Sulfonated polyimide (SPI) membranes have been evaluated as electrolyte membranes in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). The membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) was made by hot-pressing the membrane, an anode and a cathode, catalyzed with PtRu/CB (PtRu dispersed on carbon black) and Pt/CB bound with Nafion® ionomer, respectively. The performance of the cell based on SPI was compared with that of Nafion® 112 in various operation conditions such as cell temperature (Tcell), cathode relative humidity (RH), and methanol concentration (CMeOH). The methanol crossover at the cell based on SPI was a half of Nafion® 112, resulting in the improved cell efficiency. Advantage of the use of SPI became much distinctive from the conventional Nafion® 112 when the DMFC was operated at a higher Tcell or a higher CMeOH. 相似文献

Carbon-supported platinum–iron catalysts were fabricated and characterised by means of scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive
X-ray system and X-ray diffraction. The catalysts were tested in electrochemical half cells for oxygen reduction using voltammetry
and steady-state polarisation measurements and in direct methanol fuel cells. Use of PtFe/C cathodes, instead of a Pt/C cathode,
partially suppressed methanol oxidation and led to higher net oxygen reduction currents in the presence of methanol. Consequently,
an increase in power density up to 30% was achieved in direct methanol fuel cells with PtFe/C cathodes, compared to that with
Pt/C cathode. The influence of alloy composition and operation conditions on the cell performance has been investigated. 相似文献

The electrodes prepared by a sputtering method were evaluated as the cathodes for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Pt loading below 0.25 mg cm−2 achieved higher mass activities than that of 0.5 mg cm−2 prepared by the paste method, which was general conventional method. However, an increase in Pt loading reduced the catalyst activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This result may suggest an increase in only electrochemically inactive Pt. Pt utilization efficiency can be found about ten times higher at Pt loading of 0.04 mg cm−2. Moreover, addition of Nafion to sputter-deposited Pt cathodes is found possible to improve the catalyst activity for the ORR, but the excess Nafion over the optimum condition reduces the active sites. 相似文献

A highly efficient synthesis approach of urea-assisted homogeneous deposition (HD) coupled with H2 reduction has been employed to synthesize carbon-supported Pt-Ru catalyst with high metal loading of 60 wt%. The urea-assisted HD method permits in situ gradual and homogeneous generation of hydroxide ions, resulting in smaller Pt-Ru nanaoparticles deposited on the carbon support along with better particle size distribution compared with the catalyst prepared by the conventional impregnation-NaBH4 reduction. The Pt-Ru catalyst prepared by the HD-H2 method has demonstrated greatly enhanced catalytic activity towards methanol oxidation and much improved fuel cell performance compared with the one prepared by impregnation-NaBH4 reduction. HD-H2 method is simple with mild synthesis condition, but provides very efficient approach for the preparation of Pt-based catalysts for fuel cells. 相似文献

In order to develop a cheaper and durable catalyst for methanol electrooxidation reaction, ceria (CeO2) as a co-catalytic material with Pt on carbon was investigated with an aim of replacing Ru in PtRu/C which is considered as prominent anode catalyst till date. A series of Pt-CeO2/C catalysts with various compositions of ceria, viz. 40 wt% Pt-3–12 wt% CeO2/C and PtRu/C were synthesized by wet impregnation method. Electrocatalytic activities of these catalysts for methanol oxidation were examined by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry techniques and it is found that 40 wt% Pt-9 wt% CeO2/C catalyst exhibited a better activity and stability than did the unmodified Pt/C catalyst. Hence, we explore the possibility of employing Pt-CeO2 as an electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation. The physicochemical characterizations of the catalysts were carried out by using Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) surface area and pore size distribution (PSD) measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. A tentative mechanism is proposed for a possible role of ceria as a co-catalyst in Pt/C system for methanol electrooxidation. 相似文献
