Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology is being touted as a “silver bullet” solution that will enable a host of new and advanced multimedia services seamlessly across both local and wide area networks. While it appears likely that ATM will have a genuine impact on the future of business communications, a major hurdle that needs to be overcome before this happens lies with the semantic gap that exists between the ATM technology development and marketing community and the prospective customer base which stands to benefit from the technology. The work described in this paper represents our attempt to help close this gap through an examination of the kinds of multimedia business applications we believe ATM technology will provide its end users. We describe sample demonstration applications developed at GTE Laboratories that help to explain how ATM can impact business communications from the desktop. A further theme of the work described concerns our efforts to take best advantage of key features of ATM to assist ongoing investigation of multimedia application concepts and their implementation.  相似文献

There is increasing interest in deploying ATM technology in local or campus networks. ATM is an ideal technology to overcome many of the limitations of today's LAN technologies. This article focuses on the application of ATM in the LAN environment to interconnect high-end host computers, and on the interworking of ATM-based LANs with legacy LANs. The authors describe the architecture of an experimental research prototype application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designed to serve as a generic building block of the future broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN). The chip performs common asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) layer functions such as cell assembly and cell disassembly. A new media access control (MAC) protocol developed for a broadband customer premises network is also integrated in the chip. The chip interfaces to the B-ISDN through a synchronous optical network (SONET) synchronous transmission signal-3c (STS-3c) framer chip. The ATM layer chip has been designed using 1.2 μm CMOS technology with a die area of 5.4×5.4 mm2 and approximately 27000 transistors. Experimental results are described. At the user network interface, the chip can be used to implement broadband terminal adaptors and the network termination. At the broadband local exchange, the chip can be used in the implementation of ATM statistical multiplexers, ATM switch port controllers, etc  相似文献
