The World Wide Web (WWW) has become, next to electronic mail, the most popular Internet application. It has been a major contributor in turning the Internet into a household word. The WWW allows users to retrieve text and multimedia objects from servers located throughout the world, with objects connected by hypermedia links. The author presents a snapshot of the WWW after about half a decade, and speculates about where this young medium might be improved and which directions it might take from a technical perspective. The article discusses the World Wide Web (Internet), focusing on using the WWW to support commerce-electronic marketing and digital publishing. Businesses are increasingly using the Web for advertising and electronic catalog based retail sales. The increasing demand for World Wide Web (WWW) services has made document caching a necessity to decrease download times and reduce Internet traffic. To make effective use of caching, an informative decision has to be made as to which documents are to be evicted from the cache in case of cache saturation. This is particularly important in a wireless network, where the size of the client cache at the mobile terminal (MT) is small. Several types of caching are used over the Internet, including client caching, server caching, and more recently, proxy caching. In this article we review some of the well known proxy-caching policies for the Web. We describe these policies, show how they operate, and discuss the main traffic properties they incorporate in their design. We argue that a good caching policy adapts itself to changes in Web workload characteristics. We make a qualitative comparison between these policies after classifying them according to the traffic properties they consider in their designs. Furthermore, we compare a selected subset of these policies using trace-driven simulations.  相似文献

Based on an analysis of Internet protocols for data communication, we propose a simple model for future data traffic in wireless radio networks. Model parameters are selected so as to resemble traffic from the Worldwide Web (WWW) access and from distributed file systems. By changing a single parameter, the model can be switched between resembling up- or down-link traffic. 3D modeling and visualization of the cochlea using the World Wide Web (WWW) is an effective way of sharing anatomic information for cochlear implantation over the Internet, particularly for morphometry-based research and resident training in otolaryngology and neuroradiology. In this paper, 3D modeling, visualization and animation techniques are integrated in an interactive and platform-independent manner and implemented over the WWW. L.T. Cohen et al.'s (1996) template shape with mean cross-sectional areas of the human cochlea is extended into a 3D geometrical model. Also, spiral computer tomography data of a patient's cochlea is digitally segmented and geometrically represented. The cochlear electrode array is synthesized according to its specification. Then, cochlear implantation is animated with both idealized and real cochlear models. The insertion length, angular position and characteristic frequency of individual electrodes are estimated online during the virtual insertion. The optimization of the processing parameters is done to demonstrate the feasibility of this technology for clinical applications  相似文献

UMTS can be connected to data networks. So Internet traffic services such as WWW browsing, email, ftp, SMTP, etc should be handled by UMTS. Each of the traffic services has some specific properties but all of them obey a basic ON/OFF model. For a traffic service there is some unused (OFF) times between their transmitted packets which we may use them for other services to increase the traffic capacity of the network. In this paper we propose a new method on the Internet traffic evaluation in an interference limited UMTS-WCDMA system. In this method first we calculate ON and OFF time durations of the above traffic services based on the model presented in 3GPP then their activity factors. Secondly we introduce new capacity curves such as The Number of Web browsing users/Email users/ftp users/Telnet users and Fax users versus voice users. These are applicable in traffic planning for wireless systems.  相似文献

We examine alternative architectures for a client-server model of speech-enabled applications over the World Wide Web (WWW). We compare a server-only processing model where the client encodes and transmits the speech signal to the server, to a model where the recognition front end runs locally at the client and encodes and transmits the cepstral coefficients to the recognition server over the Internet. We follow a novel encoding paradigm, trying to maximize recognition performance instead of perceptual reproduction, and we find that by transmitting the cepstral coefficients we can achieve significantly higher recognition performance at a fraction of the bit rate required when encoding the speech signal directly. We find that the required bit rate to achieve the recognition performance of high-quality unquantized speech is just 2000 bits per second  相似文献
