In this paper we consider the problem of computing the connected components of the complement of a given graph. We describe a simple sequential algorithm for this problem, which works on the input graph and not on its complement, and which for a graph on n vertices and m edges runs in optimal O(n+m) time. Moreover, unlike previous linear co-connectivity algorithms, this algorithm admits efficient parallelization, leading to an optimal O(log n)-time and O((n+m)log n)-processor algorithm on the EREW PRAM model of computation. It is worth noting that, for the related problem of computing the connected components of a graph, no optimal deterministic parallel algorithm is currently available. The co-connectivity algorithms find applications in a number of problems. In fact, we also include a parallel recognition algorithm for weakly triangulated graphs, which takes advantage of the parallel co-connectivity algorithm and achieves an O(log2 n) time complexity using O((n+m2) log n) processors on the EREW PRAM model of computation.  相似文献

Abstract. We present an optimal parallel randomized algorithm for the Voronoi diagram of a set of n nonintersecting (except possibly at endpoints) line segments in the plane. Our algorithm runs in O(log n) time with high probability using O(n) processors on a CRCW PRAM. This algorithm is optimal in terms of work done since the sequential time bound for this problem is Ω(n log n) . Our algorithm improves by an O(log n) factor the previously best known deterministic parallel algorithm, given by Goodrich, ó'Dúnlaing, and Yap, which runs in O( log 2 n) time using O(n) processors. We obtain this result by using a new ``two-stage' random sampling technique. By choosing large samples in the first stage of the algorithm, we avoid the hurdle of problem-size ``blow-up' that is typical in recursive parallel geometric algorithms. We combine the two-stage sampling technique with efficient search and merge procedures to obtain an optimal algorithm. This technique gives an alternative optimal algorithm for the Voronoi diagram of points as well (all other optimal parallel algorithms for this problem use the transformation to three-dimensional half-space intersection).  相似文献

Given a set of n intervals representing an interval graph, the problem of finding a maximum matching between pairs of disjoint (nonintersecting) intervals has been considered in the sequential model. In this paper we present parallel algorithms for computing maximum cardinality matchings among pairs of disjoint intervals in interval graphs in the EREW PRAM and hypercube models. For the general case of the problem, our algorithms compute a maximum matching in O( log 3 n) time using O(n/ log 2 n) processors on the EREW PRAM and using n processors on the hypercubes. For the case of proper interval graphs, our algorithm runs in O( log n ) time using O(n) processors if the input intervals are not given already sorted and using O(n/ log n ) processors otherwise, on the EREW PRAM. On n -processor hypercubes, our algorithm for the proper interval case takes O( log n log log n ) time for unsorted input and O( log n ) time for sorted input. Our parallel results also lead to optimal sequential algorithms for computing maximum matchings among disjoint intervals. Abstract. Updating a minimum spanning tree (MST) is a basic problem for communication networks. In this paper we consider single node deletions in MSTs. Let G=(V,E) be an undirected graph with n nodes and m edges, and let T be the MST of G . For each node v in V , the node replacement for v is the minimum weight set of edges R(v) that connect the components of T-v . We present a sequential algorithm and a parallel algorithm that find R(v) for all V simultaneously. The sequential algorithm takes O(m log n) time, but only O(m α (m,n)) time when the edges of E are presorted by weight. The parallel algorithm takes O(log 2 n) time using m processors on a CREW PRAM.  相似文献

Abstract. In this paper two problems on the class of k -trees, a subclass of the class of chordal graphs, are considered: the fast reordering problem and the isomorphism problem. An O(log 2 n) time parallel algorithm for the fast reordering problem is described that uses O(nk(n-k)/\kern -1ptlog n) processors on a CRCW PRAM proving membership in the class NC for fixed k . An O(nk(k+1)!) time sequential algorithm for the isomorphism problem is obtained representing an improvement over the O(n 2 k(k+1)!) algorithm of Sekharan (the second author) [10]. A parallel version of this sequential algorithm is presented that runs in O(log 2 n) time using O((nk((k+1)!+n-k))/log n) processors improving on a parallel algorithm of Sekharan for the isomorphism problem [10]. The problem of merging k (k⩾2) sorted lists is considered. We give an optimal parallel algorithm which takes O((n log k/p)+log n) time using p processors on a parallel random access machine that allows concurrent reads and exclusive writes, where n is the total size of the input lists. This algorithm achieves O(log n) time using p=n log k/log n processors. Most of the previous log n research for this problem has been focused on the case when k=2. Very recently, parallel solutions for the case when k=2 have been reported. Our solution is the first logarithmic time optimal parallel algorithm for the problem when k⩾2. It can also be seen as a unified optimal parallel algorithm for sorting and merging. In order to support the algorithm, a new processor assignment strategy is also presented  相似文献

In 1992 F. K. Hwang and J. F. Weng published an O(n 2 ) time algorithm for computing the shortest network under a given full Steiner topology interconnecting n fixed points in the Euclidean plane. The Hwang—Weng algorithm can be used to improve substantially existing algorithms for the Steiner minimum tree problem because it reduces the number of different Steiner topologies to be considered dramatically. In this paper we present an improved Hwang—Weng algorithm. While the worst-case time complexity of our algorithm is still O(n 2 ) , its average time complexity over all the full Steiner topologies interconnecting n fixed points is O (n log n ). Relational Coarsest Partition Problems (RCPPs) play a vital role in verifying concurrent systems. It is known that RCPPs are P-complete and hence it may not be possible to design polylog time parallel algorithms for these problems. In this paper, we present two efficient parallel algorithms for RCPP in which its associated label transition system is assumed to have m transitions and n states. The first algorithm runs in O(n1+ϵ) time using m/nϵ CREW PRAM processors, for any fixed ϵ<1. This algorithm is analogous to and optimal with respect to the sequential algorithm of P.C. Kanellakis and S.A. Smolka (1990). The second algorithm runs in O(n log n) time using m/n CREW PRAM processors. This algorithm is analogous to and nearly optimal with respect to the sequential algorithm of R. Paige and R.E. Tarjan (1987)  相似文献

An O(n^2) time approximation algorithm for the minimum rectilinear Steiner tree is proposed.The approximation ratio of the algorithm is strictly less than 1.5.The computing performances show the costs of the spanning trees produced by the algorithm are only 0.8% away from the optimal ones.  相似文献

Design and Implementation of a Practical Parallel Delaunay Algorithm   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper describes the design and implementation of a practical parallel algorithm for Delaunay triangulation that works well on general distributions. Although there have been many theoretical parallel algorithms for the problem, and some implementations based on bucketing that work well for uniform distributions, there has been little work on implementations for general distributions. We use the well known reduction of 2D Delaunay triangulation to find the 3D convex hull of points on a paraboloid. Based on this reduction we developed a variant of the Edelsbrunner and Shi 3D convex hull algorithm, specialized for the case when the point set lies on a paraboloid. This simplification reduces the work required by the algorithm (number of operations) from O(n log 2 n) to O(n log n) . The depth (parallel time) is O( log 3 n) on a CREW PRAM. The algorithm is simpler than previous O(n log n) work parallel algorithms leading to smaller constants. Initial experiments using a variety of distributions showed that our parallel algorithm was within a factor of 2 in work from the best sequential algorithm. Based on these promising results, the algorithm was implemented using C and an MPI-based toolkit. Compared with previous work, the resulting implementation achieves significantly better speedups over good sequential code, does not assume a uniform distribution of points, and is widely portable due to its use of MPI as a communication mechanism. The problem of finding a sublogarithmic time optimal parallel algorithm for 3 -colouring rooted forests has been open for long. We settle this problem by obtaining an O(( log log n) log * ( log * n)) time optimal parallel algorithm on a TOLERANT Concurrent Read Concurrent Write (CRCW) Parallel Random Access Machine (PRAM). Furthermore, we show that if f(n) is the running time of the best known algorithm for 3 -colouring a rooted forest on a COMMON or TOLERANT CRCW PRAM, a fractional independent set of the rooted forest can be found in O(f(n)) time with the same number of processors, on the same model. Using these results, it is shown that decomposable top-down algebraic computation and, hence, depth computation (ranking), 2 -colouring and prefix summation on rooted forests can be done in O( log n) optimal time on a TOLERANT CRCW PRAM. These algorithms have been obtained by proving a result of independent interest, one concerning the self-simulation property of TOLERANT: an N -processor TOLERANT CRCW PRAM that uses an address space of size O(N) only, can be simulated on an n -processor TOLERANT PRAM in O(N/n) time, with no asymptotic increase in space or cost, when n=O(N/ log log N) . We study a bottleneck Steiner tree problem: given a set P={p1,p2,…,pn} of n terminals in the Euclidean plane and a positive integer k, find a Steiner tree with at most k Steiner points such that the length of the longest edges in the tree is minimized. Abstract. Let P = {p 1 , p 2 , \ldots, p n } be a set of n {\lilsf terminal points} in the Euclidean plane, where point p i has a {\lilsf service request of grade} g(p i ) ∈ {1, 2, \ldots, n} . Let 0 < c(1) < c(2) < ⋅s < c(n) be n real numbers. The {\lilsf Grade of Service Steiner Minimum Tree (GOSST)} problem asks for a minimum cost network interconnecting point set P and some {\lilsf Steiner points} with a service request of grade 0 such that (1) between each pair of terminal points p i and p j there is a path whose minimum grade of service is at least as large as \min(g(p i ), g(p j )) ; and (2) the cost of the network is minimum among all interconnecting networks satisfying (1), where the cost of an edge with service of grade g is the product of the Euclidean length of the edge with c(g) . The GOSST problem is a generalization of the Euclidean Steiner minimum tree problem where all terminal points have the same grade of service request. When there are only two (three, respectively) different grades of service request by the terminal points, we present a polynomial time approximation algorithm with performance ratio \frac 4 3 ρ (((5+4\sqrt 2 )/7)ρ , respectively), where ρ is the performance ratio achieved by an approximation algorithm for the Euclidean Steiner minimum tree problem. For the general case, we prove that there exists a GOSST that is the minimum cost network under a full Steiner topology or its degeneracies. A powerful interior-point algorithm is used to find a (1+ε) -approximation to the minimum cost network under a given topology or its degeneracies in O(n 1.5 (log n + log (1/ε))) time. We also prove a lower bound theorem which enables effective pruning in a branch-and-bound method that partially enumerates the full Steiner topologies in search for a GOSST. We then present a k -optimal heuristic algorithm to compute good solutions when the problem size is too large for the branch-and-bound algorithm. We present a class of O(n log n) heuristics for the Steiner tree problem in the Euclidean plane. These heuristics identify a small number of subsets with few, geometrically close, terminals using minimum spanning trees and other well-known structures from computational geometry: Delaunay triangulations, Gabriel graphs, relative neighborhood graphs, and higher-order Voronoi diagrams. Full Steiner trees of all these subsets are sorted according to some appropriately chosen measure of quality. A tree spanning all terminals is constructed using greedy concatenation. New heuristics are compared with each other and with heuristics from the literature by performing extensive computational experiments on both randomly generated and library problem instances. Previous research on developing parallel triangulation algorithms concentrated on triangulating planar point sets.O(log3 n) running time algorithms usingO(n) processors have been developed in Refs. 1 and 2. Atallah and Goodrich(3) presented a data structure that can be viewed as a parallel analogue of the sequential plane-sweeping paradigm, which can be used to triangulate a planar point set inO(logn loglogn) time usingO(n) processors. Recently Merks(4) described an algorithm for triangulating point sets which runs inO(logn) time usingO(n) processors, and is thus optimal. In this paper we develop a parallel algorithm for triangulating simplicial point sets in arbitrary dimensions based on the idea of the sequential algorithm presented in Ref. 5. The algorithm runs inO(log2 n) time usingO(n/logn) processors. The algorithm hasO(n logn) as the product of the running time and the number of processors; i.e., an optimal speed-up.  相似文献

The terminal Steiner tree problem is a special version of the Steiner tree problem, where a Steiner minimum tree has to be found in which all terminals are leaves. We prove that no polynomial time approximation algorithm for the terminal Steiner tree problem can achieve an approximation ratio less than (1−o(1))lnn unless NP has slightly superpolynomial time algorithms. Moreover, we present a polynomial time approximation algorithm for the metric version of this problem with a performance ratio of 2ρ, where ρ denotes the best known approximation ratio for the Steiner tree problem. This improves the previously best known approximation ratio for the metric terminal Steiner tree problem of ρ+2.  相似文献
