Proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and liquid hydrogen are gaining attention as a power generation system and alternative fuel of ship. This study proposes a novel PEMFC system, integrated with the organic Rankine cycle–direct expansion cycle (ORC-DEC), which exploits cold exergy from liquid hydrogen and low temperature waste heat generated by the PEMFC for application in a liquid hydrogen fueled ship. A thermodynamic model of each subsystem was established and analyzed from the economic, energy, and exergy viewpoints. Moreover, parametric analysis was performed to identify the effects of certain key parameters, such as the working fluid in the ORC, pressure exerted by the fuel pump, cooling water temperature of the PEMFC, and the stack current density on the system performance. The results showed that the proposed system could generate 221 kW of additional power. The overall system achieved an exergy and energy efficiency of 43.52 and 40.45%, respectively. The PEMFC system had the largest exergy destruction, followed by the cryogenic heat exchanger. Propane showed the best performance among the several investigated ORC working fluids and the system performance improved with the increase in the cooling water temperature of the PEMFC. The economic analysis showed that the average payback time of ORC-DEC was 11.2 years and the average net present value (NPV) was $295,268 at liquid hydrogen costing $3 to $7, showing the potential viability of the system.  相似文献

The proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell (PEMFC) is equipped with a series of auxiliary components which consume considerable amount of energy. It is necessary to investigate the design and operation of the PEMFC power system for better system performance. In this study, a typical PEMFC power system is developed, and a thermodynamic model of the system is established. Simulation is carried out, and the power distribution of each auxiliary component in the system, the net power and power efficiency of the system are obtained. This power system uses cooling water for preheating inlet gases, and its energy-saving effect is also verified by the simulation. On this basis, the exergy analysis is applied on the system, and the indexes of the system exergy loss, exergy efficiency and ecological function are proposed to evaluate the system performance. The results show that fuel cell stack and heat exchanger are the two components that cause the most exergy loss. Furthermore, the system performance under various stack inlet temperatures and current densities is also analyzed. It is found that the net power, energy efficiency and exergy efficiency of the system reach the maximum when the stack inlet temperature is about 348.15 K. The ecological function is maintained at a high level when the stack inlet temperature is around 338.15 K. Lower current density increases the system ecological function and the power and exergy efficiencies, and also helps decrease the system exergy loss, but it decreases the system net power.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to simulate a proton-electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system, namely a PEMFC stack, an anode gas supply subsystem, an anode gas-recovery subsystem, a cathode gas supply subsystem, and a tail gas exhaustion subsystem. In addition, this paper presents an analysis of the efficiency of combined heat and power (CHP) systems. MATLAB and Simulink were employed for dynamic simulation and statistical analysis. The rates of active and the passive anode hydrogen recirculation were considered to elucidate the mechanism of hydrogen circulation. When recovery involved diverse recovery mechanisms, the recirculation rate was affected by the pressure at the hydrogen outlet of the PEMFC system. The greater the pressure was at that outlet, the higher the recovery rate was. In the hydrogen recovery system, when the temperature of the hydrogen supply end remained the same, increasing the temperature of the gas supply end increased the efficiency of the fuel cells; fixing the flow of the hydrogen supply end and increasing the temperature of the hydrogen supply end increased the efficiency of the PEMFC system. A calculation of the efficiency of the recovery system indicated that the thermal efficiency of the fuel cells exceeded 35%, the power generation efficiency exceeded 45%, and the efficiency of the CHP system exceeded 80%.  相似文献

In front of the opportunity of the rapid development of renewable energy power generation, energy storage is playing a more important role in improving its utilization efficiency. In this paper, a hybrid energy system based on combination of hydrogen fueled compressed air energy storage system and water electrolysis hydrogen generator is proposed. The superfluous renewable energy power is charged by compressing the air and/or producing hydrogen through water electrolysis. A hydrogen combustor is introduced to raise the air temperature in the discharging process. A thermodynamic model of the proposed system is built. Energy and exergy analysis found that under the design condition, the proposed system can achieve a round trip efficiency of 65.11%, an exergy efficiency of 79.23%, and an energy storage density of 5.85 kWh/m3. The exergy loss of water electrolysis hydrogen generator and hydrogen combustor rank in the top two of all components. Sensitivity analysis indicates that the outlet temperature of hydrogen combustor and specific energy consumption of water electrolysis hydrogen generator are the crucial influencing factor of system performance.  相似文献

In this study, exergoeconomic and environmental impact analyses, through energy, exergy, and sustainability assessment methods, are performed to investigate a hybrid version renewable energy (including wind and solar) based hydrogen and electricity production system. The dead state temperatures considered here are 10 °C, 20 °C and 30 °C to undertake a parametric study. An electrolyzer and a metal hydride tank are used for hydrogen production and hydrogen storage, respectively. Also, the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) and battery options are utilized for electricity generation and storage, respectively. As a result, the energy and exergy efficiencies and the sustainability index for the wind turbine are found to be higher than the ones for solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Also, the overall exergy efficiency of the system is found to be higher than the corresponding overall energy efficiency. Furthermore, for this system, it can be concluded that wind turbine with 60 gCO2/month is more environmentally-benign than the solar PV system with 75 gCO2/month. Finally, the total exergoeconomic parameter is found to be 0.26 W/$, when the energy loss is considered, while it is 0.41 W/$, when the total of exergy loss and destruction rates are taken into account.  相似文献

A micro-combined cooling heating and power (CCHP) system integrated with geothermal-assisted methanol reforming and incorporating a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack is presented. The novel CCHP system consists of a geothermal-based methanol steam reforming subsystem, PEMFC, micro gas turbine and lithium bromide (LiBr) absorption chiller. Geothermal energy is used as a heat source to drive methanol steam reforming to produce hydrogen. The unreacted methanol and hydrogen are efficiently utilized via the gas turbine and PEMFC to generate electricity, respectively. For thermodynamic and economic analysis, the effects of the thermodynamic parameters (geothermal temperature and molar ratio of water to methanol) and economic factors (such as methanol price, hydrogen price and service life) on the proposed system performance are investigated. The results indicate that the ExUF (exergy utilization factor the exergy utilization factor), TPES (trigeneration primary energy saving) and energy efficiency of the novel system can be reached at 8.8%, 47.24% and 66.3%, respectively; the levelized cost of energy is 0.0422 $/kWh, and the annual total cost saving ratio can be reached at 20.9%, compared with the conventional system. The novel system achieves thermodynamic and economic potential, and provides an alternative and promising way for efficiently utilizing abundant geothermal energy and methanol resources.  相似文献

In the present research, a commercial battery-powered pure electric vehicle was suitably modified to convert it into a hybrid one integrating a PEMFC stack. The hydrogen supply system to the stack included a passive recirculation system based on a Ventury-type ejector. Besides, in order to achieve an optimum operation of the PEMFC stack, a discrete state machine model was considered in its control system. The inclusion of a rehabilitation operating mode prevented the stack from possible failures, increasing its lifetime. It was verified that for the rated operating point when supplying power to the vehicle (2.5 kW) the hydrogen consumption decreased, and the actual efficiency (47.9%) PEMFC was increased close to 1%. Field tests performed demonstrate that the range of the hybrid electric vehicle was increased by 78% when compared to the one of the original battery electric car. Also, under the tested experimental conditions in hybrid mode, 34% of the total energy demanded by the electric machine of the vehicle was supplied by the PEMFC stack.  相似文献

As a high-efficiency and eco-friendly way of energy conversion, fuel cell has received much attention in recent years. A novel residential combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) system, consisting of a biomass gasifier, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack, an absorption chiller and auxiliary equipment, is proposed. Based on the established thermodynamic models, the effects of operating parameters, biomass materials type and moisture content on the system performance are closely investigated. Overall system performance is then compared under four different operating modes. From the viewpoints of energy utilization and CO2 emissions, the CCHP mode has the best performance with corresponding energy efficiency of 57.41% and CO2 emission index of 0.516 ton/MWh. Exergy analysis results suggest that the optimization and transformation on the gasifier and PEMFC stack should be encouraged. Energy and exergy assessments in this research provide pragmatic guidance to the performance improvement of the integrated CCHP systems with PEMFC. This research also achieves a reasonable combination of efficient cogeneration, green hydrogen production and full recovery of low grade waste heat.  相似文献

This paper investigates the performance of a high temperature Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer integrated with concentrating solar power (CSP) plant and thermal energy storage (TES) to produce hydrogen and electricity, concurrently. A finite-time-thermodynamic analysis is conducted to evaluate the performance of a PEM system integrated with a Rankine cycle based on the concept of exergy. The effects of solar intensity, electrolyzer current density and working temperature on the performance of the overall system are identified. A TES subsystem is utilized to facilitate continuous generation of hydrogen and electricity. The hydrogen and electricity generation efficiency and the exergy efficiency of the integrated system are 20.1% and 41.25%, respectively. When TES system supplies the required energy, the overall energy and exergy efficiencies decrease to 23.1% and 45%, respectively. The integration of PEM electrolyzer enhances the exergy efficiency of the Rankine cycle, considerably. However, it causes almost 5% exergy destruction in the integrated system due to conversion of electrical energy to hydrogen energy. Also, it is concluded that increase of working pressure and membrane thickness leads to higher cell voltage and lower electrolyzer efficiency. The results indicate that the integrated system is a promising technology to enhance the performance of concentrating solar power plants.  相似文献

This paper proposes a system modeling and performance analysis of a renewable hydrogen energy hub (RHEH) connected to an ac/dc hybrid microgrid (MG). The proposed RHEH comprises a photovoltaic (PV)-based renewable energy source (RES) as the primary source, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) as the secondary power source, and a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer (PEMELZ) that can generate and store hydrogen in a hydrogen tank. All these resources are directly connected at the dc bus of the ac/dc microgrids. The PEMFC operates and utilizes the hydrogen from the hydrogen tank when the energy generated by RES cannot meet the load demand. A coordinated power flow control approach has been developed for the RHEH to mitigate the mismatch between generation and demand in the ac/dc microgrid and produce renewable hydrogen when renewable power is in excess. The paper also proposes a modified hybrid Perturb & Observe-Particle Swarm Optimization (Hybrid PO-PSO) algorithm to ensure the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) operation of the PV and the PEMFC. The operation of the proposed RHEH is validated through simulations under various critical conditions. The results show that the proposed RHEH is effective to maintain the system power balance and can provide power-to-hydrogen and hydrogen-to-power when required.  相似文献

Hydrogen production using thermal energy, derived from nuclear reactor, can achieve large-scale hydrogen production and solve various energy problems. The concept of hydrogen and electricity cogeneration can realize the cascade and efficient utilization of high-temperature heat derive for very high temperature gas-cooled reactors (VHTRs). High-quality heat is used for the high-temperature processes of hydrogen production, and low-quality heat is used for the low-temperature processes of hydrogen production and power generation. In this study, two hydrogen and electricity cogeneration schemes (S1 and S2), based on the iodine-sulfur process, were proposed for a VHTR with the reactor outlet temperature of 950 °C. The thermodynamic analysis model was established for the hydrogen and electricity cogeneration. The energy and exergy analysis were conducted on two cogeneration systems. The energy analysis can reflect the overall performance of the systems, and the exergy analysis can reveal the weak parts of the systems. The analysis results show that the overall hydrogen and electricity efficiency of S1 is higher than that of S2, which are 43.6% and 39.2% at the hydrogen production rate of 100 mol/s, respectively. The steam generators is the components with the highest exergy loss coefficient, which are the key components for improving the system performance. This study presents a theoretical foundation for the subsequent optimization of hydrogen and electricity cogeneration coupled with VHTRs.  相似文献

The development of fuel cells is promised to enable the distributed generation of electricity in the near future. However, the infrastructure for production and distribution of hydrogen, the fuel of choice for fuel cells, is currently lacking. Efficient production of hydrogen from fuels that have existing infrastructure (e.g., natural gas, gasoline or LPG) would remove a major drawback to use fuel cells for distributed power generation. The aim of this paper is to define the better operating conditions of an innovative hydrogen generation system (the fuel processing system, FP) based on LPG steam reforming, equipped with a membrane shift reactor, and integrated with a PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) stack of 5 kWel.With respect to the conventional hydrogen generation systems, the use of membrane reactors (MRs) technology allows to increase the hydrogen generation and to simplify the FP-PEMFC plant, because the CO removal system, needed to reduce the CO content at levels required by the PEMFC, is avoided. Therefore, in order to identify the optimal operating conditions of the FP-PEMFC system, a sensitivity analysis on the fuel processing system has been carried out by varying the main operating parameters of both the reforming reactor and the membrane water gas shift reactor. The sensitivity analysis has been performed by means of a thermochemical model properly developed. Results show that the thermal efficiency of the fuel processing system is maximize (82.4%, referred to the HHV of fuels) at a reforming temperature of 800 °C, a reforming pressure of 8 bar, and an S/C molar ratio equal to 6. In the nominal operating condition of the PEMFC stack, the FP-PEMFC system efficiency is 36.1% (39.0% respect to the LHV).  相似文献

In this paper, a novel poly-generation system for olefin and power production from natural gas is proposed, which integrates hydrocarbon production and the combined cycle power generation. Economic and technological evaluation based on the internal rate of return (IRR) and exergy efficiency is performed. The energy integration results in the proposed poly-generation system for simultaneous production of chemical products (ethylene and propylene) and electricity being more thermodynamically efficient and economically viable than single purpose power generation and chemical products production plants. IRR and exergy efficiency of the proposed poly-generation system are higher than that of natural gas methanol to olefin (NGMTO) system, 18.9% and 49.9%, respectively. The biggest exergy destruction segments, their causes, and possible measures for improvement are investigated simulation and thermodynamic analysis. To analyze the effect of unreacted syngas recycle on the exergy efficiency and economic gains from the proposed poly-generation system, its thermoeconomic optimization model is built by combining economic with thermodynamic analysis. Optimization analysis shows that when 78% of the unreacted syngas is recycled back to the reactor in the methanol synthesization process, the thermoeconomic performance of the poly-generation system is at its optimum.  相似文献

Electrochemical hydrogen compression (EHC) is a promising alternative to conventional compressors for hydrogen storage at high pressure, because it has a simple structure, low cost of hydrogen delivery, and high efficiency. In this study, the performance of an EHC is evaluated using a three-dimensional numerical model and finite volume method. The results of numerical analysis for a single cell of EHC are extended to a full stack of EHC. In addition, exergy and exergoeconomic analyses are carried out based on the numerical data. The effects of operating temperature, pressure, and gas diffusion layer (GDL) thickness on the energy and exergy efficiencies and the exergy cost of hydrogen are examined. The motivation of this study is to examine the performance of the EHC at different working conditions and also to determine the exergy cost of hydrogen. The results reveal that the energy and exergy efficiency of EHC stack improve by almost 3.1% when operating temperature increases from 363 K to 393 K and the exergy cost of hydrogen decreases by 0.5% at current density of 5000 A m−2. It is concluded that energy and exergy efficiency of EHC stack decrease by 25% and 5.4% when the cathode pressure increases from 1 bar to 30 bar, respectively. Moreover, it is realized that the GDL thickness has a considerable effect on the EHC performance. The exergy cost of hydrogen decreases by 53% when the GDL thickness decreases from 0.5 mm to 0.2 mm at current density of 5000 A m−2.  相似文献

In this paper, a fuel cell power generation system fed by hydrogen is analyzed by different performance criteria over the entire range of potential operating conditions. First law efficiency and net power output are considered for conventional energetic indices of performance, and exergy destruction rate is taken into consideration as an exergetic performance criteria. A new exergetic criterion called the exergetic performance coefficient (EPC) is introduced and is applied to the system model based on zero-dimensional approach. The system model consists of the following components: fuel cell stack, afterburner, fuel and air compressors, and heat exchangers. The effects of the operating conditions on the system performance are studied parametrically. The obtained results based on the exergetic performance coefficient criterion are compared with first law efficiency, power output and exergy destruction rate. Results show that design insights of fuel cell systems can be considerably improved when conventional energetic analyses are supplemented with EPC criterion.  相似文献

In recent years micro-cogeneration systems (μ-CHPs), based on fuel cells technology, have received increasing attention because, by providing both useful electricity and heat with high efficiency, even at partial loads, they can have a strategic role in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. For residential applications, the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), is considered the most promising, since it offers many advantages such as high power density, low operating temperature, and fast start-up and shutdown. In this paper the electrical and thermal behaviors of a PEMFC stack, suitable for μ-CHP applications, have been investigated through experimental and numerical activity. The experimental activity has been carried out in a test station in which several measurement instruments and controlling devices are installed to define the behavior of a water-cooled PEMFC stack. The test station is equipped by a National Instruments Compact DAQ real-time data acquisition and control system running Labview™ software. The numerical activity has been conducted by using a model, properly developed by the authors, based on both electrochemical and thermal analysis. The experimental data have been used to validate the numerical model, which can support and address the experimental activity and can allow to forecast the behavior and the performance of the stack when it is a component in a more complex energy conversion system.  相似文献

PEMFC system is a complex new clean power system. Based on MATLAB/Simulink, this paper develops a system-level dynamic model of PEMFC, including the gas supply system, hydrogen supply system, hydrothermal management system, and electric stack. The neural network fits the electric stack model to the simulation data. The effects of different operating conditions on the PEMFC stack power and system efficiency are analyzed. Combining the power of the reactor and the system efficiency to define the integrated performance index, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is introduced to optimize the power density and system efficiency of the PEMFC with multiple objectives. The final optimal operating point increases the power density and system efficiency by 1.33% and 12.8%, respectively, which maximizes the output performance and reduces the parasitic power.  相似文献

This study deals with the energy and exergy analysis of a molten carbonate fuel cell hybrid system to determine the efficiencies, irreversibilities and performance of the system. The analysis includes the operation of each component of the system by mass, energy and exergy balance equations. A parametric study is performed to examine the effect of varying operating pressure, temperature and current density on the performance of the system. Furthermore, thermodynamic irreversibilities in each component of the system are determined. An overall energy efficiency of 57.4%, exergy efficiency of 56.2%, bottoming cycle energy efficiency of 24.7% and stack energy efficiency of 43.4% are achieved. The results demonstrate that increasing the stack pressure decreases the overpotential losses and, therefore, increases the stack efficiency. However, this increase is limited by the remaining operating conditions and the material selection of the stack. The fuel cell and the other components in which chemical reactions occur, show the highest exergy destruction in this system. The compressor and turbine on the other hand, have the lowest entropy generation and, thus, the lowest exergy destruction.  相似文献
