Exp I, with 12 male hooded rats, demonstrated that Ss with caudate-putamen lesions exhibited an impairment in the acquisition and reversal of a spatial maze task when compared with unoperated control Ss. Exp II, with 24 Ss, investigated leverpress responding supported by a VI schedule in 3 groups of Ss: a group with caudate-putamen lesions, a group with lesions of the posterior cortex, and an unoperated control group. The presentation of a 0.5-sec, response-contingent light correlated with reinforcement generated an elevated response rate in the 2 operated groups but tended to suppress responding in the control group, perhaps by overshadowing the response–reinforcer relation. Only the group with cortical lesions maintained the elevated rate when the light was uncorrelated with food delivery. Exp III confirmed for these same Ss that caudate-putamen lesions produced a spatial learning deficit. No deficit was observed in the posterior cortex group. It is suggested that caudate-putamen lesions disrupt the mechanism underlying the response–reinforcer association on which spatial maze learning and free operant responding in part depend. Attempted to replicate previous demonstrations of classical conditioning of morphine analgesic tolerance and to determine whether stimulus overshadowing effects might explain previous conflicting findings. In Exp I, 8 groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats received a series of 10 morphine (5 mg/kg) and/or saline injections, differing only with respect to the contingency between a compound visual-auditory CS and the substance injected. When tested for analgesic responding to morphine in the presence of the compound CS, only those groups for which the CS and morphine injections were paired during the acquisition sequence evidenced tolerance. In Exp II, tolerant Ss were tested in the presence of 1 component of the compound CS. When a loud tone (85 db) was used in the compound, less analgesic tolerance was elicited later by the weaker visual stimulus alone. This differential stimulus control of the analgesic response suggests that overshadowing may contribute to failures to replicate conditioned morphine tolerance. Three conditioned lever-press suppression experiments with rats investigated the interaction between overshadowing and outcome-alone exposure effects. Experiment 1 found in first-order conditioning that combined overshadowing and outcome-preexposure treatments attenuate the response deficit produced by either treatment alone. Experiments 2 and 3 investigated the interaction between overshadowing and outcome pre- and postexposure effects in sensory preconditioning, varying retention intervals to engage recency and primacy effects with respect to treatment order. Contrary to when a solitary cue is conditioned, responding to a cue conditioned in compound appeared positively correlated with the context's associative status. These findings suggested that some of the basic laws of learning applicable to cues conditioned alone do not similarly apply to a component of a compound cue. Three appetitive Pavlovian conditioning experiments with rats examined the associability of stimuli A and B that had a history of compound conditioning (AB+), relative to stimuli X and Y that had a history of conditioning in isolation (X+, Y+). Following this training, Experiment 1 revealed that conditioned responding was higher to X and Y than to A and B (overshadowing). In a subsequent AY+, AX?, BY? test discrimination, the AY/BY discrimination was solved more readily than the AY/AX discrimination. In Experiment 2, following AB+, X+, Y+ training, A and Y were presented as a compound and signaled the availability of reinforcement upon the performance of an instrumental response. Test trials in which A and Y were presented alone, and in extinction, revealed that A acquired greater control of instrumental responding than Y. Experiment 3 revealed that following AB+, X+, Y+ training, A and B served as more effective discriminative stimuli for instrumental responding than X and Y. Overall, these results imply that the associability of stimuli conditioned in compound is higher than stimuli conditioned in isolation. To determine the contribution of the hippocampus in the processing of a configural positive patterning discrimination (PPD) task, discrimination between reinforced presentations of a tone plus light compound stimulus and nonreinforced presentations of each of its components (TL+/T-,L-) was examined using a conditioned-suppression paradigm. In the first experiment, rats demonstrated a rapid acquisition of the PPD with an appropriate discriminative responding. Rats submitted to posttraining hippocampal lesions (using multiple injections of ibotenic acid) were no longer able to master correctly the previously solved discrimination, demonstrating significant differences in their response rates during the 2 never-reinforced elemental stimulus presentations. In Experiment II, lesioned rats were not able to correctly learn the PPD, demonstrating the same pattern of responding as in Experiment I. These rats were also severely disrupted in a radial maze elimination task. Experiment IIIa indicated that, in a simple conditioning task (T+, L+), normal rats acquired a rapid conditioned suppression for both stimuli, with the tone being slightly more susceptible to conditioning than the light stimulus. In Experiment IIIb, conditioning to the compound tone plus light stimulus led to a clear conditioning to the tone and almost no conditioning to the light, suggesting an overshadowing from the tone to the light. Similar results were obtained in rats with hippocampal lesions. These results strongly suggest that the disruption showed by rats with hippocampal lesions in the PPD task cannot be due to an alteration of the relative salience of the stimulus. The inability of rats with hippocampal lesions to solve correctly the PPD is due to difficulties in eliminating responding to some unimportant events of the situation, reflecting a deficit in selective attention processes rather than in an ability to process configural stimuli. Three experiments were conducted to determine whether attention-related changes in luminance detectability reflect a modulation of early sensory processing. Exps 1 and 2 used peripheral cues to direct attention and found substantial effects of cue validity on target detectability; these effects were consistent with a sensory-level locus of selection but not with certain memory- or decision-level mechanisms. In Exp 3, event-related brain potentials were recorded in a similar paradigm using central cues, and attention was found to produce changes in sensory-evoked brain activity beginning within the 1st 1 msec of stimulus processing. These changes included both an enhancement of sensory responses to attended stimuli and a suppression of sensory responses to unattended stimuli; the enhancement and suppression effects were isolated to different neural responses, indicating that they may arise from independent attentional mechanisms. Investigated the relationship between preconditioning exposure to a stimulus later employed in conditioning as a CS and suppression of a licking response in the presence of that stimulus, in 2 experiments with a total of 216 male albino Sprague-Dawley rats. In Exp. I, a direct relationship was found between intensity of preconditioning stimulus and magnitude of suppression reduction. There was also evidence for the effects of stimulus intensity during conditioning and the operation of generalization decrement when conditioning and test stimulus intensities were not the same. Exp. II showed that preconditioning CS exposure reduced suppression to the test CS on the 1st test trial, regardless of interval between preconditioning exposures or preexposure and conditioning. In Exp I fear was classically conditioned in a total of 240 female hooded and Sprague-Dawley rats with a discrete conditioned stimulus (CS) at intertrial intervals (ITIs) of 15, 45, 75, 105, 165, or 225 sec and in Exp II, with an additional 144 Ss, with or without a discrete CS at ITIs of 165, 225, or 285 sec. The amount of fear conditioned to situational cues and to the discrete CS plus situational cues was then measured by the learning of a hurdle-jumping response which allowed escape from the fear-eliciting stimuli. Results suggest that as ITI was lengthened fear conditioned to situational cues alone and to the discrete CS increased. However, following conditioning with a discrete CS, fear elicited by situational cues increased with ITI but then decreased, presumably because a discrimination had been formed between the situational cues and the compound of CS plus situational cues. The comparator hypothesis is a response rule stating that responding to a Pavlovian conditioned stimulus/stimuli (CS) reflects the associative strength of the CS relative to that of other cues (comparator stimuli) that were present during CS training. Thus, modulation of the associative strength of a CS's comparator stimulus should alter responding to that CS. These studies examined the stimulus specificity of this effect using within-Ss designs. Rats were trained on 2 CSs, each with a unique comparator stimulus, to determine the degree to which posttraining extinction of the comparator stimulus for one CS influences responding to the other CS. Using negative contingency (Exps 1 and 2), overshadowing (Exp 3), and local context (Exp 4) preparations, stimulus specificity was observed. In each case, posttraining extinction of the comparator stimulus for one CS had greater impact on responding to that CS than on responding to the alternate CS. The effects of ibotenic acid lesions of the hippocampus on overshadowing and blocking were examined in a Pavlovian appetitive conditioning experiment with rats. In a standard test of performance to the overshadowed or blocked target stimulus, sham-lesioned rats displayed both of these stimulus-selection phenomena. Rats with hippocampal lesions showed normal blocking, but no overshadowing. Subsequent inhibitory learning about the target stimulus was slower after overshadowing or blocking procedures than after a control procedure in sham-lesioned rats, but not in lesioned rats. These results suggest that exposure to these procedures can induce hippocampally mediated losses in conditioned stimulus associability (learning rate parameter), even when those losses are not a major determinant of the stimulus-selection effects themselves. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) has been implicated in various attentional functions. This experiment examined the involvement of mPFC subregions in the allocation of attention in learning and action as a function of the predictive accuracy of cues. Rats with dorsal (encompassing anterior cingulate, prelimbic, and infralimbic cortices) or ventral (encompassing mainly infralimbic and dorsopeduncular cortices and tenia tecta) mPFC lesions were trained in a multiple-choice discrimination task in which operant nosepoke responses to some visual cues were consistently (100%) reinforced (CRF) with food, whereas responses to other visual cues were partially (50%) reinforced (PRF). In challenge tests designed to assess attention in the control of action, responding was directed more to CRF cues than to PRF cues in sham and dorsal mPFC-lesioned rats, but ventral mPFC-lesioned rats showed similar levels of responding to both CRF and PRF cues. Nevertheless, when given a choice between simultaneously presented CRF and PRF cues in a cue competition test, all groups responded more to CRF cues. In a subsequent Pavlovian overshadowing phase designed to assess attention in the acquisition of new learning, previously trained CRF cues overshadowed conditioning to novel auditory cues more than did PRF cues in dorsal mPFC-lesioned rats, whereas the opposite pattern was observed in sham and ventral mPFC-lesioned rats. These results suggest a dissociation within the mPFC in the use of reinforcement prediction information to allocate attention for new learning and for the control of action. Participants in Experiments 1 and 2 performed a discrimination and counting task to assess the effect of lead stimulus modality on attentional modification of the acoustic startle reflex. Modality of the discrimination stimuli was changed across subjects. Electrodermal responses were larger during task-relevant stimuli than during task-irrelevant stimuli in all conditions. Larger blink magnitude facilitation was found during auditory and visual task-relevant stimuli, but not for tactile stimuli. Experiment 3 used acoustic, visual, and tactile conditioned stimuli (CSs) in differential conditioning with an aversive unconditioned stimulus (US). Startle magnitude facilitation and electrodermal responses were larger during a CS that preceded the US than during a CS that was presented alone regardless of lead stimulus modality. Although not unequivocal, the present data pose problems for attentional accounts of blink modification that emphasize the importance of lead stimulus modality.  相似文献

The effects of lesions of the cerebellum on the acquisition of heart rate (HR) conditioned responses (CRs) were examined in rats. Large lesions of the cerebellar vermis severely attenuated the acquisition of differentially conditioned bradycardic responses in restrained rats without affecting unconditioned HR responses to the tone conditioned stimuli (CSs) or the shock unconditioned stimulus/stimuli (UCS). In Exp 2, Ss were trained unrestrained, and under these conditions the CR was tachycardia in control Ss. Lesions of the vermis again severely attenuated acquisition of this CR without affecting unconditioned response (UCR) to the CSs or UCS. Bilateral lesions of the cerebellar hemispheres did not affect HR conditioning in either test procedure. The vermis of the cerebellum is an essential component of an HR conditioning circuit in the rat. The cerebellar hemispheres, which are involved in some discrete somatomotor CRs, have no essential functional contribution to HR conditioning. Results are discussed in relation to contributions from a forebrain system involved in HR conditioning and in relation to lateral cerebellar contributions to discrete somatomotor CRs. Following 100 or 300 avoidance training trials in Exp I, a total of 60 Holtzman male albino rats and their yoked Pavlovian counterparts were tested for generalization of lick suppression along the frequency dimension of the avoidance conditioned stimulus. Gradients of stimulus control were evident after 300 instrumental avoidance training trials, and additional intradimensional Pavlovian discrimination training further sharpened the gradients. After 100 trials, the yoked Pavlovian Ss suppressed more than their instrumental counterparts. However, with increased Pavlovian training, flatter gradients with decreased suppression were obtained. Results from Exp II, using 12 Ss, revealed that, whereas Pavlovian experience decreased suppression to the tone, Ss suppressed drinking in the presence of static, environmental cues. In Exp. I, rats with hippocampal lesions were severely impaired in learning a fixed response sequence in a complex maze. Following subsequent manipulations, it was found that hippocampally damaged rats could learn the sequence as well as cortical and operated control Ss in the presence of highly conspicuous cues. Performance of hippocampally damaged Ss, unlike that of the control groups, deteriorated following removal of the cue used in original learning. In Exp. V, Ss with medial thalamic lesions also exhibited maze-learning impairment, but they benefited less than the hippocampal groups from an enhancement of cue conditions. The hippocampus is discussed in terms of its importance in processing relevant stimulus cues and in the organization of appropriate response strategies. (24 ref.) Two experiments, with 15 male albino rats, investigated whether discrete auditory conditioned stimulus/stimuli (CS) that signal the availability or onset of taste unconditioned stimulus/stimuli (UCS) (sucrose, quinine) can control orofacial responses in the absence of those UCSs. In Exp I, one auditory stimulus (CS+) was paired with the delivery of a sucrose solution to the magazine floor, and another auditory stimulus (CS–) was never followed by sucrose. Following conditioning, oral infusions of water that were preceded by the CS+ were found to elicit more ingestive (sucrose-typical) orofacial responses than did water alone or water preceded by the CS–. In Exp II, the conditioned ingestive reactions to a signal for sucrose observed in Exp I again occurred, and conditioned aversive (quinine-typical) orofacial responses occurred in response to water infusions preceded by a former signal for quinine. Data suggest that perceived palatability may be influenced by Pavlovian associations involving exteroceptive CSs and illustrate the importance of supporting stimuli in modulating the effects of Pavlovian associations on behavior. Three experiments showed that phonological recoding of visual stimuli in short-term memory affects coding in long-term memory (LTM) and therefore performance on tasks involving generation and manipulation of visual images of the stimuli. An image transformation task was devised. It consists of mentally subtracting a part of an image to discover in the remainder another object. In Exp 1, Ss were required to learn a set of easily nameable visual stimuli and then perform the subtraction task on images retrieved from LTM. Performance was significantly better when initial learning was accompanied by articulatory suppression (AS). Exp 2 confirmed that AS had no effect when the task was performed on an image of a just-presented stimulus. In Exp 3, the nameability of the stimuli was manipulated. The results replicated the effect of AS for items that were easy to name but showed no effect of AS for stimuli that were difficult to name. Schizophrenic patients reportedly have a deficit in the control of sensitivity to auditory stimuli as shown by the P50 auditory evoked potential wave in a conditioning-testing paradigm that measures suppression of response to a repeated stimulus. Although this finding has been replicated by several US laboratories, one European group has not found differences between schizophrenic patients and normal control subjects. In the present study, investigators in the Schizophrenia Research Center at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, Australia, selected 22 normal control subjects, 11 acutely ill schizophrenic inpatients, and 11 clinically stable schizophrenic outpatients. Both schizophrenic groups were treated with similar doses of classical neuroleptic medications. Evoked potentials were recorded by an investigator from the US laboratory that initially reported the difference; five averages, each the response to 32 stimulus pairs, were recorded from each subject. The normal control subjects demonstrated significantly more suppression of the P50 response to the repeated stimuli than the schizophrenic groups, as previously reported. There were no significant changes in the suppression measure over the five trials. The suppression of the P50 wave by schizophrenic outpatients was somewhat greater than that by schizophrenic inpatients, but both schizophrenic groups had decreased suppression, compared with the normal subjects. The mean P50 suppression for five averages was successfully used in a logistic regression to classify subjects as normal or schizophrenic. This method was more accurate than attempts to classify subjects with only one average. The mean amplitude of the initial conditioning response did not differ between groups. Schizophrenic patients had slightly shorter mean latencies. There was no direct relationship of P50 suppression to measures of clinical psychopathology.  相似文献

Investigated 40 3-mo-old infants' discrimination of simple visual arrangements of discrete elements, using an operant high-amplitude sucking technique in a stimulus familiarization–novelty paradigm. In Exp I, response recovery was found following changes in the arrangement of 3-dot patterns. To rule out contour density and position as possible cues, Ss were familiarized in Exp II with sets of stimuli varying in size and position but of constant arrangements. Response recovery was found following new arrangements of similar size and position, but Ss failed to recover to the familiarized arrangement presented in novel sizes and positions. Results of Exp III indicate the ability of infants to discriminate changes in size and position similar to the variations received during familiarization in Exp II. Honeybees were classically conditioned with odor as conditioned stimulus/stimuli (CS), sucrose as unconditioned stimulus/stimuli (UCS), and proboscis extension as response. The purpose of Exp 1 (Ns?=?26 and 27) was to look for facilitation of forward conditioning by CS–UCS overlap, but rapid conditioning without overlap left little room for improvement. In 2 further experiments, CS and UCS were simultaneous, and response to odor alone was measured in subsequent tests. In Exp 2, a simultaneous group (N?=?25) responded more to the training odor than did an unpaired control group (N?=?25). In Exp 3, a differentially conditioned simultaneous group (N?=?29) responded more to an odor paired with sucrose in training (S+) than to an odor presented alone (S–).
