Crack growth and high cycle fatigue behaviour of an AA6060 aluminium alloy after ECAP combined with a subsequent heat treatment Crack growth properties of the Al‐Mg‐Si alloy AA6060 as well as the high cycle fatigue behaviour have been investigated after equal‐channel angular pressing (ECAP). In our study, experiments have been conducted on different stages of microstructural breakdown and strain hardening of the material as they were present after different numbers of ECAP passes. A bimodal condition, obtained after two pressings, and a homogeneously ultrafine‐grained condition after eight repetitive pressings have been investigated. Furthermore, optimized conditions with an enhanced ductility, produced by ECAP processing combined with a following short‐time aging treatment were included into the study. Crack growth experiments have been conducted in the near‐threshold regime and the region of stable crack growth, covering a range of load ratios from R = 0.1 up to 0.7. It was found that the lowered fatigue threshold ΔKth of the as‐extruded material can be enhanced by the combination of ECAP and short‐time aging, owing to the increased ductility and strain hardening capability of this material. By means of SEM investigations and tensile tests, the crack growth properties of the different conditions were related to microstructural and mechanical features. In fatigue tests, load reversals up to failure and the fatigue limit for an as‐extruded condition and an optimized condition after two ECAP‐passes have been compared to the coarse grained initial condition and a remarkable increase in fatigue strength was noted.  相似文献

The microstructure, mechanical properties, fatigue life and fatigue crack propagation rate of Mg‐8Al‐0.5Zn‐0.3Mn (AZ80) magnesium alloy were investigated after extrusion and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). The highest ultimate and yield strengths and a large enhancement in the fatigue lifetime were obtained after two passes of ECAP. These were decreased with further pressing, although the grain size became finer. There was a correlation between the fatigue and ultimate strengths of AZ80 alloy. The transition from twinning to dislocation slip has also occurred at an average grain size of 7.9 μm. Simultaneous influences of the grain size and the yield strength caused an almost the same threshold of the stress intensity ratio for different process conditions. Moreover, the enhanced ductility of the ECAPed alloy resulted in an increase in the crack growth resistance because of its better ability to accommodate plastic strains during cycling.  相似文献

The fatigue cracks growth rate of a forged HSLA steel (AISI 4130) was investigated using thin single edge notch tensile specimen to simulate the crack development on a diesel train crankshafts. The effect of load ratio, R, was investigated at room temperature. Fatigue fracture surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy. An approach based on the crack tip opening displacement range (ΔCTOD) was proposed as fatigue crack propagation criterion. ΔCTOD measurements were carried out using 2D‐digital image correlation techniques. J‐integral values were estimated using ΔCTOD. Under test conditions investigated, it was found that the use of ΔCTOD as a fatigue crack growth driving force parameter is relevant and could describe the crack propagation behaviour, under different load ratio R.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth and the fracture resistance curve (R-curve) were investigated in a polycrystalline alumina (AD90) and a silicon carbide whisker-reinforced alumina composite (Al2O3-SiCw) at room temperature in air using a combined loading technique for stabilizing crack growth, and a surface film technique for monitoring crack length. Fatigue crack growth was evaluated successfully with those experimental techniques. Load shedding tests were performed until the crack became dormant, in order to determine the threshold stress intensity factor Kth. Subsequently, the specimens were used for quasi-static crack growth tests under a monotonic loading condition. The R-curves were determined in this experiment; however, fracture resistance did not increase markedly with crack growth. Detailed observations of the crack growth behaviour revealed that the flat R-curve was attributed to the shielding effect of the fatigue crack tip wake. Thus, the fatigue precrack introduced by the load shedding test was not regarded as an ideal crack for determining the R-curve. Fractographic observations were performed to investigate the mechanistic difference between fatigue and quasi-static crack growth. It was found that the cyclic loading produced fretting damage in the wake region and it reduced the shielding effect of the fatigue cracks. Based on the experimental results, the relationship between the fatigue crack growth and the R-curve is discussed as is the significance of Kth as a material parameter.  相似文献

Tensile and fatigue crack growth tests of 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) were performed in laboratory air, gaseous hydrogen at 0.2 MPa and saturated H2S solution. The longitudinal specimen showed a lesser degradation of tensile properties than the transverse ones in saturated H2S solution. The orientation of specimens with respect to rolling direction had little influence on the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) of the alloy in air. Furthermore, 2205 duplex stainless steel was susceptible to hydrogen‐enhanced fatigue crack growth. Transmission electron micrographs, in addition to X‐ray diffraction, revealed that the strain‐induced austenite to martensite transformation occurred near the crack surface within a rather narrow depth. Fatigue fractography of the specimens tested in air showed mainly transgranular fatigue fracture with a small amount of flat facet fracture. Furthermore, extensive quasi‐cleavage fracture of 2205 duplex stainless steel was associated with the hydrogen‐enhanced crack growth.  相似文献

The effects of cryorolling (CR) on high cycle fatigue (HCF) and fatigue crack growth rate behaviour of Al 7075 alloy have been investigated in the present work. The Al 7075 alloy was rolled for different thickness reductions (40% and 70%) at cryogenic (liquid nitrogen) temperature and its tensile strength, fatigue life, and fatigue crack growth mechanism were studied by using tensile testing, constant amplitude stress controlled fatigue testing, and fatigue crack growth rate testing using load shedding (decreasing ΔK) technique. The microstructural characterization of the alloy was carried out by using Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The cryorolled Al alloy after 70% thickness reduction exhibits ultrafine grain (ufg) structure as observed from its FESEM micrographs. The cryorolled Al 7075 alloys showed improved mechanical properties (Y.S, U.T.S, Impact energy and Fracture toughness are 430 Mpa, 530 Mpa, 21 J, 24 Mpa m1/2 for 40CR alloy) as compared to the bulk 7075 Al alloy. It is due to suppression of dynamic recovery and accumulation of higher dislocations density in the cryorolled Al alloys. The cryorolled Al alloy investigated under HCF regime of intermediate to low plastic strain amplitudes has shown the significant enhancement in fatigue strength as compared to the coarse grained (CG) bulk alloy due to effective grain refinement. Fatigue crack growth (FCGR) resistance of the ufg Al alloy has been found be higher, especially at higher values of applied stress intensity factor ΔK The reasons behind such crack growth retardation is due to diffused crack branching mechanism, interaction between a propagating crack and the increased amount of grain boundaries (GB), and steps developed on the crack plane during crack-precipitate interaction at the GB due to ultrafine grain formation.  相似文献

In the present study, fatigue and fracture characteristics of sensitized marine grade Al‐Mg (AA 5754) alloy are experimentally evaluated. Received alloy is sensitized at temperatures of 150°C (SENS50) and 175°C (SENS75) for 100 hours. Fracture parameters, KIc and JIc, are experimentally evaluated. Slow strain rate tensile tests at a crosshead speed of 0.004, 0.006, and 0.01 mm/min; fatigue crack growth tests at load ratios (R = Pmin/Pmax) of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.5; and low cycle fatigue tests at four strain amplitudes of (0.3‐0.6)% are performed for SENS50 and SENS75 alloys. Relatively lower magnitude of fracture toughness values are observed for SENS75 specimen. Severe degradation in tensile properties, fatigue crack growth characteristics, and low cycle fatigue lives are observed for SENS75 samples. Extended finite element method is adopted to simulate the elasto‐plastic crack growth during fracture toughness evaluation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is used to understand the failure mechanism of sensitized alloys.  相似文献

The fatigue crack growth properties of friction stir welded joints of 2024‐T3 aluminium alloy have been studied under constant load amplitude (increasing‐ΔK), with special emphasis on the residual stress (inverse weight function) effects on longitudinal and transverse crack growth rate predictions (Glinka's method). In general, welded joints were more resistant to longitudinally growing fatigue cracks than the parent material at threshold ΔK values, when beneficial thermal residual stresses decelerated crack growth rate, while the opposite behaviour was observed next to KC instability, basically due to monotonic fracture modes intercepting fatigue crack growth in weld microstructures. As a result, fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) predictions were conservative at lower propagation rates and non‐conservative for faster cracks. Regarding transverse cracks, intense compressive residual stresses rendered welded plates more fatigue resistant than neat parent plate. However, once the crack tip entered the more brittle weld region substantial acceleration of FCGR occurred due to operative monotonic tensile modes of fracture, leading to non‐conservative crack growth rate predictions next to KC instability. At threshold ΔK values non‐conservative predictions values resulted from residual stress relaxation. Improvements on predicted FCGR values were strongly dependent on how the progressive plastic relaxation of the residual stress field was considered.  相似文献

The present investigation is aimed to evaluate fatigue crack growth parameters of gas tungsten arc, electron beam and laser beam welded Ti–6Al–4V titanium alloy for assessing the remaining service lives of existing structure by fracture mechanics approach. Center cracked tensile specimens were tested using a 100 kN servo hydraulic controlled fatigue testing machine under constant amplitude uniaxial tensile load. Crack growth curves were plotted and crack growth parameters (exponent and intercept) were evaluated. Fatigue crack growth behavior of welds was correlated with mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics of welds. Of the three joints, the joint fabricated by laser beam welding exhibited higher fatigue crack growth resistance due to the presence of fine lamellar microstructure in the weld metal.  相似文献

This work presents the experimental results of fatigue crack growth resistance of ultrafine-grained (UFG) copper. The UFG copper has a commercial purity level (99.90%) and an average grain size of 300 nm obtained by a 8-passes route Bc ECAP process. The fatigue propagation tests are conducted in air, at load ratios R = Kmin/Kmax varying from 0.1 to 0.7, on small Disk Shaped CT specimens. Both stage I and stage II regime of growth rate are explored. Results are partially in contrast with the few experimental data available in the technical literature, that are by the way about high purity UFG copper. In fact, the present material shows a relatively high fatigue crack resistance with respect to the unprocessed coarse-grained alloy, especially at high values of applied stress intensity factor ΔK. At higher R-ratio a smaller threshold intensity factor is found, together with a lower stage II fatigue crack growth rate. The explanation of such crack growth retardation is based on a diffuse branching mechanism observed especially at higher average ΔK.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth behaviours of the titanium alloy Ti‐6Al‐4V, with two different microstructures, at different maximum stresses were identified by digital image correlation technique. Full‐field strains were monitored around fatigue cracks after consecutive cycles in fatigue crack growth experiments. Results indicated that the Ti‐6Al‐4V alloy with a bi‐modal microstructure had a better fatigue resistance than that with a primary‐α microstructure. Typical behaviours of small cracks and the evolution of multi‐scale fatigue cracks were clarified. The strain accumulations around the micro‐notch and fatigue crack increased with increasing number of load cycles. On the basis of von Mises strain mapping, it was found that crack growth rate could be characterized by crack‐tip plastic zone size.  相似文献

Fatigue properties such as the fatigue strength, fatigue notch sensitivity, and fatigue crack propagation rate, of a modified Al-7075 + Sc aluminum alloy were investigated in this study. The effects of solution treatment on the fatigue performance of this alloy were also investigated. The ultimate tensile strength of the as-extruded sample was 705.5 MPa. The ultimate tensile strength decreased by 12% after solution treatment. The fatigue limit σe of the as-extruded sample decreased from 201.2 to 154.4 MPa after solution treatment. The fatigue notch sensitivity for the as-extruded and solution-treated (ST) samples was 0.97 and 0.64, respectively. The crack growth rate in the as-extruded sample with fine precipitates was clearly lower than that of the ST sample that had coarse precipitates at R = 0.1 when ΔK < 15 MPa?m \sqrt m . However, the growth rates of both the samples were approximately the same when ΔK > 15 MPa?m \sqrt m . The higher yield strength of the as-extruded sample led to a lower crack growth rate when compared to the ST sample.  相似文献

ABSTRACT We examine micromechanisms of fatigue crack initiation and growth in a cast AM60B magnesium alloy by relating dendrite cell size and porosity under different strain amplitudes in high cycle fatigue conditions. Fatigue cracks formed at casting pores within the specimen and near the surface, depending on the relative pore sizes. When the pore that initiated the fatigue crack decreased from approximately 110 µm to 80 µm, the fatigue life increased two times. After initiation, the fatigue cracks grew through two distinct stages before final overload specimen failure. At low maximum crack tip driving forces (Kmax < 2.3 MPa√m), the fatigue crack propagated preferentially through the α‐Mg dendrite cells. At high maximum crack tip driving forces (Kmax > 2.3 MPa√m), the fatigue crack propagated primarily through the β‐Al12Mg17 particle laden interdendritic regions. Based on these observations, any proposed mechanism‐based fatigue model for cast Mg alloys must incorporate the change in growth mechanisms for different applied maximum stress intensity factors, in addition to the effect of pore size on the propensity to form a fatigue crack.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth behaviours in different welding zones of laser beam welded specimens were investigated using central crack tension specimens for 6156 aluminium alloy under constant amplitude loading at nominal applied stress ratio R = 0.5, 0.06, ?1. The experimental results showed that base metal (BM) exhibited superior fatigue crack resistance compared to weld metal (WM) and heat‐affected zone (HAZ). Crack growth resistance of WM was the lowest. The exponent m values for BM and HAZ at different stress ratios are close and around 2.6, while m for WM at different stress ratio is around 4.7. The discrepancy between crack growth rates for WM and BM is more evident with increasing stress ratio, while it is a little change for HAZ and BM. Change of the microstructure in WM deteriorates the resistance of fatigue crack growth compared to BM. It was mainly due to grain boundary liquation and dissolving of second‐phase particles in the weld region. It was also found that the variety of fatigue crack resistance for different welding zones is in conformity with the change of hardness. BM with the highest hardness exhibited the maximum resistance for fatigue crack, and WM with the lowest hardness exhibited the minimum fatigue crack resistance.  相似文献

Previous papers have shown ΔKRP to be a useful parameter describing fatigue crack propagation behavior, where ΔKRP is an effective stress intensity factor range corresponding to the excess RPG load (re-tensile plastic zone's generated load) in which the retensile plastic zone appears under the loading process. In this paper, the relationship between ΔKRP and the zone size ( ) (which is smaller between the tensile plastic zone at maximum load and the compressive plastic zone at minimum load) was investigated using a crack opening/closing simulation model so as to consider a physical meaning of ΔKRP. As a result, it becomes clear that ΔKRP dominates the zone size where fatigue damage mostly occurs. This result supports the following crack propagation equation
where C and m are material constants.Simulation and fatigue crack propagation tests were then carried out for compact tension (CT), center cracked tension (CCT) and four points bend (4PB) specimens under constant amplitude loading to obtain C and m values for HT-50 steel. Fatigue crack propagation tests were also carried out under constant amplitude loading using CCT specimens with residual stress distribution due to flame gas heating at the center line or edge lines. The T specimen introduced tensile residual stress at the tip of a notch, and the C specimen introduced compressive residual stress. It therefore becomes clear that tensile residual stress leads to a decrease in RPG load, while compressive residual stress leads to increase in RPG load, and that the simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental RPG load. It also becomes clear that simulated crack growth curve using the simulated and the above equation is in good agreement with the experimental curve. It is understood that tensile residual stress creates only a slight increase in crack propagation rate and compressive residual stress create a big decrease a crack propagation rate.  相似文献

Abstract A method for the analysis of two-step fatigue level sequences is proposed and compared with experimental results. Two-step loading tests of the aluminum alloy 2017-T4 in 3% sodium chloride solution have been carried out in conjunction with a replica technique used to monitor the growth of fatigue cracks. Fatigue cracks were nucleated at corrosion pits 10–15 μm in size, and crack growth rather than crack initiation was found to take up the major portion of the fatigue lifetime in these tests. The results could therefore be analyzed on the basis of the following constitutive relation for fatigue crack growth. da/dN=AKeffKeffth)2 This analysis was simplified since the influence of transients in the crack growth rate induced upon change in load level was found to be minimal. The approach provides a rational basis for dealing with load-sequence effects.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The biaxial fatigue of a steel plate (JIS SM400B) having a box‐welded (wrap‐around) joint was experimentally studied. Special concerns were focused on the effects of the biaxial load range ratio and compressive cyclic loading in the lateral direction. The direction of fatigue crack propagation under biaxial cyclic tensile loading, which has a phase difference of π, changed according to the biaxial load range ratio, Rxy = ΔPxPy. When Rxy was less than 0.56, fatigue cracks propagated along the toe of the weld in the x‐direction because the principal tensile stress range Δσy at that location exceeded the orthogonal value Δσx at the box‐weld toe. The fatigue lives in biaxial tests related well to the data from uniaxial tests when invoking the Δσ5 criterion. However, the location and direction of Δσ5 should be chosen according to the Rxy value and the failure crack direction. An increase in Δσ5, as induced by the Poisson's ratio effect from either the out‐of‐phase tensile loading or the in‐phase compressive loading in the y‐direction, leads to an increase in fatigue damage (decrease in fatigue resistance or specifically a faster crack propagation rate), and this effect can be successfully estimated from uniaxial fatigue test data.  相似文献

Crack growth behaviour of ultrafine-grained AA6063, processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) via route E at room temperature, was evaluated with special emphasis on the effect of grain size distribution and work hardening. A bimodal, two times ECAPed condition and a monomodal ultrafine-grained condition after eight ECAP passes are compared with the coarse grained peak aged material. Depending on their microstructure, the ECAPed materials show significantly lower fatigue threshold values (ΔK th) and higher crack growth rates (da/dN) than their coarse grained counterparts. Micrographs of the crack propagation surfaces reveal the reduced grain size as major key to increased crack growth rates of the ECAPed material, as it influences roughness-induced crack closure and crack deflections. Furthermore, the effects of other features, such as ductility, work hardening capability and grain boundary characteristics, are discussed.  相似文献

To clarify vacuum effects on fatigue crack growth in freestanding metallic thin films, experiments were conducted on approximately 500‐nm‐thick copper films inside a field emission scanning electron microscope. Fatigue crack growth accompanied by intrusion/extrusion formation occurred in vacuum, and da/dN was smaller than in air in the middle‐ΔK region (ΔK ≈ 1.7‐3.1 MPam1/2). Conversely, in the low‐ΔK region (ΔK ? 1.7 MPam1/2), da/dN was larger in vacuum than in air. Further, fatigue crack growth in vacuum occurred below the fatigue threshold in air (ΔKth,air). A nonpropagating crack after reaching ΔKth,air continued to propagate in vacuum when the environment changed from air to vacuum. This indicates that fatigue crack growth resistance is smaller in vacuum than in air under the same effective driving force. The fatigue damage area near the crack paths in vacuum in the low‐ΔK region became wider, suggesting that the nucleation of fatigue damage was enhanced in vacuum.  相似文献

Quasi-static tensile tests in air and slow strain rate tests (SSRTs) in a 3.5% NaCl solution were conducted in an ultra-high-strength P/M Al–Zn–Mg alloy fabricated through powder metallurgy. Attention is also paid to fatigue strength and fatigue crack growth behavior in laboratory air and in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The alloy has extremely high strength of about 800 MPa. However, elongation at break remains small, at about 1.3%. The final fracture occurs by a macroscopically flat crack normal to the tensile axis, with little reduction in area and little shear lip on the periphery of a smooth sample. However, it fails microscopically in a ductile manner, with dimples. Dimple size is less than 1 μm, because the grain size of the alloy is extremely small. Strengthening mechanisms operating in the alloy are: small grains, sufficient metastable η′ phase in a matrix, and intermetallic compound acting as a fiber reinforcement. The SSRT strength in a 3.5% NaCl solution decreases slightly at a very low strain rate, that is smaller than those observed in aluminum alloys sensitive to stress corrosion. This means that the crack initiation resistance to stress corrosion is superior. However, under cyclic loading, the corrosion fatigue strength becomes lower than that conducted in air, because pitting corrosion on a sample surface acts as a stress concentrator. Crack initiation site of quasi-static and fatigue failure of the alloy is at inclusions, and hence, it is essential to decrease inclusions in the alloy for the improvement of the mechanical properties. Fatigue crack resistance of the alloy is inferior to conventional Al–Zn–Mg alloys fabricated by ingot metallurgy, because the fatigue fracture toughness, or ductility, of the alloy is inferior to other Al alloys, and intergranular cracking promotes crack growth. However, no influence of 3.5% NaCl solution on corrosion fatigue crack growth is observed, although an investigation is required into whether stress corrosion crack growth occurs or not, and at the same time, and of corrosion fatigue crack growth behavior at lower stress intensity. The fracture surface and crack initiation sites are closely examined using a high-resolution field emission type scanning electron microscope, and the fracture mechanisms of the alloy are discussed.  相似文献
