Using career-related aspects to assess person–environment fit.

The relations between person and environment (P-E) fit, defined on the basis of career-related aspects and occupational satisfaction, was examined. The characteristics of 12 occupations along 36 career-related aspects were elicited from 12 career counselors. Thirty professionals in each of the 12 occupations reported their preferences in the same set of aspects, and their occupational satisfaction. Two measures of P-E fit were defined as the mean absolute gap between the professional's preferences and the respective characteristics of their occupation (a) in all 36 aspects and (b) in the core aspects of each occupation only. The median within-occupation correlation between P-E fit and occupational satisfaction was .27 when all aspects were considered, and .85 when only the core aspects were taken into account. Schizophrenic inability to disattend from strong aspects of meaning.

Tested R. L. Cromwell and P. R. Dokecki's (1968) theory that excessive response by schizophrenics to strong aspects of meaning of words and deficient response to weak aspects of meaning reflect an inability to disattend from strong aspects of meaning. 79 schizophrenics (40 off and 39 on drugs) were given 2 multiple-choice subtests asking for identification of aspects of meaning of words. Items of one subtest contained both a strong and a weak aspect of meaning and items of the other contained 2 weak aspects of meaning. The subtests had been matched on difficulty and reliability for 166 normal Ss. The schizophrenics identified weak aspects of meaning no worse when strong aspects of meaning were present than when they were absent. Findings argue against Cromwell and Dokecki's theory. Schizophrenics' excessive response to strong aspects of meaning on other tasks probably reflects a defect in screening and a resultant heightened expression of a normal bias. Relative contributions of motivator and hygiene factors to overall job satisfaction.

Ratings of 4 motivator job aspects, 4 hygiene job aspects, and overall job satisfaction were obtained from 93 male Ss who were equally satisfied with both the motivator and the hygiene aspects of their jobs. 2 of the job aspects (work itself and opportunity for achievement), both motivators, were sufficient to account for the variance in overall satisfaction. On the meaning of Maslach's three dimensions of burnout.

The dimensionality of C. Maslach's (1982) 3 aspects of job burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment) was examined among a sample of supervisors and managers in the human services. A series of confirmatory factor analyses supported the 3-factor model, with the first 2 aspects highly correlated. The 3 aspects were found to be differentially related to other variables reflecting aspects of strain, stress coping, and self-efficacy in predictable and meaningful ways. Warriors as peacekeepers: Features of the Somalia experience and PTSD.

There has been scant empirical study of the psychological consequences of contemporary peacekeeping missions. This study examined relationships among 4 variables characterizing this type of operation (traditional combat events, negative aspects of peacekeeping, pressure to uphold restraint, and positive aspects of peacekeeping) and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Participants were 3,310 male and female soldiers who served in the 1992–1994 Somalia mission. Structural equation modeling procedures were applied to data from subsamples of non-African Americans and African Americans. For both groups, traditional combat and negative aspects of peacekeeping were associated with PTSD, frustration with restraint, and positive aspects of peacekeeping; however, restraint was not related to PTSD. Discrepancies between the groups involved relationships among the restraint, positive aspects, and PTSD variables. Recommendations are offered to foster inquiry into this new research. Laboratory diagnosis of idiopathic myelofibrosis. Review of the literature and presentation of 15 cases

We report on 15 patients affected by myelofibrosis. The main clinical aspects were hepatosplenomegaly, anemia and leukocytosis. Immature cells and anisopoikilocytosis of the erythrocytes were frequently found in the peripheral blood. At bone biopsy, various aspects of panhyperplasia, increase in the reticular fibers, myeloid fibrosis and osteosclerosis were observed. Leukocyte alkaline phosphatase was frequently elevated. The clinical and laboratory course of the disease, causes of death and the possible etiopathogenetic aspects of this disease are considered and discussed.

After analysing of recurrent aphthous stomatitis the clinical and morphological aspects, the authors consider various therapeutic possibilities. They underline the relationship between therapy and clinical aspects of the pathology.
