OBJECTIVE: To discover whether some cognitive deficits associated with aging could be related to a restricted scope of visual attention. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study, with subjects in each age group receiving the same four conditions. Subjects: 24 elderly (mean age 65.2 years, 12 men and 12 women) and 24 young (mean age 21.8 years, 12 men and 12 women) matched for handedness, gender, and education level. METHODS: Subjects viewed a display that contained four light-gray squares arranged as if on the tips of a plus sign, then black X marks appeared and the subjects indicated whether one or two Xs appeared in the squares as quickly and accurately as possible. The time to respond and accuracy level were recorded. Two types of displays were used; one with squares spread out over a large area and one with squares condensed into a small area. In two thirds of the trials the size remained the same (with half being large, and half small), and in one third it changed (with half of these trials changing from large-to-small and half from small-to-large). RESULTS: In the trials that had a consistent display size, the elderly subjects performed the task better with the smaller display, whereas the young subjects performed equally well with both sized displays. In addition, the elderly found it easier to shift from large to small scope than to maintain attention at the large scope; in contrast, the younger subjects found it easiest to maintain attention on a static display size. A reanalysis of part of P. Podgorny and R. N. Shepard's (see record 1984-03057-001) data shows that reaction times (RTs) to attended and unattended squares are almost identical when the attended areas are nonunitary and that RTs are related to compactness for unitary attended areas but that this relation breaks down when attention is focused on nonunitary areas. The importance of the actual grid location of probes on RTs is also illustrated. The failure of compactness to reflect these aspects of the spatial nature of attention suggests that this metric is deficient when applied to the study of the spatial determinants of attention. In a novel choice attention-gating paradigm, observers monitor a stream of 3x3 letter arrays until a tonal cue directs them to report 1 row. Analyses of the particular arrays from which reported letters are chosen and of the joint probabilities of reporting pairs of letters are used to derive a theory of attention dynamics. An attention window opens 0.15 s following a cue to attend to a location, remains open (minimally) 0.2 s, and admits information simultaneously from all the newly attended locations. The window dynamics are independent of the distance moved. The theory accounts for about 90% of the variance from the over 400 data points obtained from each of the observers in the 3 experiments reported here. We used high-field (3T) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to label cortical activity due to visual spatial attention, relative to flattened cortical maps of the retinotopy and visual areas from the same human subjects. In the main task, the visual stimulus remained constant, but covert visual spatial attention was varied in both location and load. In each of the extrastriate retinotopic areas, we found MR increases at the representations of the attended target. Similar but smaller increases were found in V1. Decreased MR levels were found in the same cortical locations when attention was directed at retinotopically different locations. In and surrounding area MT+, MR increases were lateralized but not otherwise retinotopic. At the representation of eccentricities central to that of the attended targets, prominent MR decreases occurred during spatial attention. 相似文献

Describes 2 experiments in which visual and/or auditory location precues preceded visual or auditory targets. 30 observers were required to judge the location of the targets. Conditions were such that involuntary, stimulus-driven (SD) attention shifts were the only ones likely to occur and give rise to cueing effects. It was found that visual precues affected response time to localize both visual targets and auditory targets, but auditory precues affected only the time to localize auditory targets. Moreover, when visual and auditory cues conflicted, visual cues dominated in the visual task but were dominated by auditory cues in the auditory task. Results suggest that involuntary SD attention shifts might be controlled by a modality-specific mechanism for visual tasks, whereas SD shifts of auditory attention are controlled by a supramodal mechanism. Ss made lexical decisions on a target letter string presented above or below fixation. In Exps 1 and 2, target location was cued 100 msec in advance of target onset. Responses were faster on validly than on invalidly cued trials. In Exp 3, the target was sometimes accompanied by irrelevant stimuli on the other side of fixation; in such cases, responses were slowed (a spatial filtering effect). Both cuing and filtering effects on response time were additive with effects of word frequency and lexical status (words vs nonwords). These findings are difficult to reconcile with claims that spatial attention is less involved in processing familiar words than in unfamiliar words and nonwords. The results can be reconciled with a late-selection locus of spatial attention only with difficulty but are easily explained by early selection models. This study investigates the effect of the visibility of near and far letter distractors on target processing by scaling the size of the distractor letters to compensate for changes in resolution across the visual field. In Experiment 1, scaled and unscaled distractors were presented at varied stimulus onset asynchronies. Results showed that scaling the size of distractor letters in relation to their distance from the target was effective in producing strong compatibility effects. Scaled distractors presented prior to, or simultaneously with, the target were found to interfere with target processing whether they were near or far from the target. Experiment 2 used scaled distractors and varied the presentation location and the amount of time for processing prior to the presentation of the target. Compatibility effects were found to vary by location and by the exposure duration of the distractor. The finding of distance effects at far locations supports a space-based visual-attention mechanism with a wide attention beam (Steinman, Steinman, & Lehmkuhle, 1995). 相似文献

An uncertain relation between health and angry/hostile behaviour exists in the literature on adolescents. With data from a pilot study, one possible reason for this is explored: health measures such as blood pressure as well as angry/hostile behaviours may change with, or depend upon physical maturity, body size and body fatness. The sample consists of 60 African-, Hispanic-, and Anglo-American adolescents (15 to 16 years of age) drawn from a public school in Houston, TX. Using resting diastolic blood pressure as a model, in a sex stratified analysis, the following conclusions were reached: Physical maturity in girls and body height in boys were related to ethnicity in the sample and were confounders of the blood pressure and anger relationship. In girls secretive anger ('anger-in') and hostility were associated with increased body fat; expressive anger ('anger-out') in boys is associated with increased conicity (central body fat distribution) (p < 0.01). These associations were independent of height and physical maturity. Hostility was not significantly related to diastolic blood pressure in boys after adjusting for height and conicity. 'Anger-in' was significantly and positively related to diastolic blood pressure in girls (p < 0.01). This relationship was strongly mediated by per cent body fat, because the association of 'anger-in' and blood pressure was no longer statistically significant when the model included body fat. The results suggest that measures of physical maturity and more refined measures of body fat and body fat distribution should be considered in studies attempting to link adolescent blood pressure with anger expression. 相似文献

Three experiments investigated whether spatial and nonspatial components of visual attention would be influenced by changes in (healthy, young) subjects’ level of alertness and whether such effects on separable components would occur independently of each other. The experiments used a no-cue/alerting-cue design with varying cue-target stimulus onset asynchronies in two different whole-report paradigms based on Bundesen’s (1990) theory of visual attention, which permits spatial and nonspatial components of selective attention to be assessed independently. The results revealed the level of alertness to affect both the spatial distribution of attentional weighting and processing speed, but not visual short-term memory capacity, with the effect on processing speed preceding that on the spatial distribution of attentional weighting. This pattern indicates that the level of alertness influences both spatial and nonspatial component mechanisms of visual attention and that these two effects develop independently of each other; moreover, it suggests that intrinsic and phasic alertness effects involve the same processing route, on which spatial and nonspatial mechanisms are mediated by independent processing systems that are activated, due to increased alertness, in temporal succession. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from healthy subjects in response to unilaterally flashed high and low luminance bar stimuli presented randomly to left and right field locations. Their task was to covertly and selectively attend to either the left or right stimulus locations (separate blocks) in order to detect infrequent shorter target bars of either luminance. Independent of attention, higher stimulus luminance resulted in higher ERP amplitudes for the posterior N95 (80-110 ms), occipital P1 (110-140 ms), and parietal N1 (130-180 ms). Brighter stimuli also resulted in shorter peak latency for the occipital N1 component (135-220 ms); this effect was not observed for the N1 components over parietal, central or frontal regions. Significant attention-related amplitude modulations were obtained for the occipital P1, occipital, parietal and central N1, the occipital and parietal P2, and the parietal N2 components; these components were larger to stimuli at the attended location. In contrast to the relatively short latencies of both spatial attention and luminance effects, the first interaction between luminance and spatial attention effects was observed for the P3 component to the target stimuli (350-750 ms). This suggests that interactions of spatial attention and stimulus luminance previously reported for reaction time measures may not reflect the earliest stages of sensory/perceptual processing. Differences in the way in which luminance and attention affected the occipital P1, occipital N1 and parietal N1 components suggest dissociations among these ERPs in the mechanisms of visual and attentional processing they reflect.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

Investigated the relationship among aging, attentional processes, and exercise in 2 experiments. First, age differences were examined on 2 attentional tasks: a time-sharing task and an attentional flexibility task. Young adults alternated attention between 2 sequenced tasks more rapidly and time-shared the processing of 2 tasks more efficiently than older adults. Then the effect of aerobic exercise was investigated on the same 2 attentional tasks in older adults. Following the 10-wk exercise program, older exercisers showed substantially more improvement in alternation speed and time-sharing efficiency than older controls. Interestingly, this exercise effect was specific to dual-task processing. Both groups of Ss showed equivalent effects on single-task performance. These results indicate that aerobic exercise can exert a beneficial influence on the efficiency of at least 2 different attentional processes in older adults. The aims of this study were (a) to find out if attentional ability factors that are separate from the well-established ability factors (e.g., fluid intelligence, crystallized intelligence, and short-term acquisition and retrieval function) can be identified, and (b) to establish, through the use of part correlations, whether attentional abilities play a role in the changes in fluid and crystallized intelligence that occur with increasing age. A battery of 36 tests (19 psychometric tests and 17 measures of attentional processes) were given to 100 people, 20 of whom were in each age decade between 20 and 70. Results indicated that three attentional factors—Search, Concentration, and Attentional Flexibility—exist at the primary-ability level and that all three define fluid intelligence at the second-order level. Results also indicate that the decline in fluid intelligence with increasing age disappears if attentional factors are parted-out. Similarly, the increase in crystallized intelligence with increasing age becomes even greater if one controls for attentional processes. It is well known that auditory and visual onsets presented at a particular location can capture a person’s visual attention. However, the question of whether such attentional capture disappears when attention is focused endogenously beforehand has not yet been answered. Moreover, previous studies have not differentiated between capture by onsets presented at a nontarget (invalid) location and possible performance benefits occurring when the target location is (validly) cued. In this study, the authors modulated the degree of attentional focus by presenting endogenous cues with varying reliability and by displaying placeholders indicating the precise areas where the target stimuli could occur. By using not only valid and invalid exogenous cues but also neutral cues that provide temporal but no spatial information, they found performance benefits as well as costs when attention is not strongly focused. The benefits disappear when the attentional focus is increased. These results indicate that there is bottom-up capture of visual attention by irrelevant auditory and visual stimuli that cannot be suppressed by top-down attentional control. A unified theory of visual recognition and attentional selection is developed by integrating the biased-choice model for single-stimulus recognition (R. D. Luce, 1963; R. N. Shepard, 1957) with a choice model for selection from multielement displays (C. Bundesen et al; see record 1985-05669-001) in a race model framework. Mathematically, the theory is tractable, and it specifies the computations necessary for selection. The theory is applied to extant findings from a broad range of experimental paradigms. The findings include effects of object integrality in selective report, number and spatial position of targets in divided-attention paradigms, selection criterion and number of distracters in focused-attention paradigms, delay of selection cue in partial report, and consistent practice in search. Global context plays an important, but poorly understood, role in visual tasks. This study demonstrates that a robust memory for visual context exists to guide spatial attention. Global context was operationalized as the spatial layout of objects in visual search displays. Half of the configurations were repeated across blocks throughout the entire session, and targets appeared within consistent locations in these arrays. Targets appearing in learned configurations were detected more quickly. This newly discovered form of search facilitation is termed contextual cueing. Contextual cueing is driven by incidentally learned associations between spatial configurations (context) and target locations. This benefit was obtained despite chance performance for recognizing the configurations, suggesting that the memory for context was implicit. The results show how implicit learning and memory of visual context can guide spatial attention towards task-relevant aspects of a scene. 相似文献

Since M. M. Chun and Y. Jiang's (1998) original study, a large body of research based on the contextual cuing paradigm has shown that the visuocognitive system is capable of capturing certain regularities in the environment in an implicit way. The present study investigated whether regularities based on the semantic category membership of the context can be learned implicitly and whether that learning depends on attention. The contextual cuing paradigm was used with lexical displays in which the semantic category of the contextual words either did or did not predict the target location. Experiments 1 and 2 revealed that implicit contextual cuing effects can be extended to semantic category regularities. Experiments 3 and 4 indicated an implicit contextual cuing effect when the predictive context appeared in an attended color but not when the predictive context appeared in an ignored color. However, when the previously ignored context suddenly became attended, it immediately facilitated performance. In contrast, when the previously attended context suddenly became ignored, no benefit was observed. Results suggest that the expression of implicit semantic knowledge depends on attention but that latent learning can nevertheless take place outside the attentional field. Animals trained on 2 discriminations learn the 2nd rapidly if the relevant stimuli are from the same dimension as the 1st (an intradimensional or ID shift) but slowly if the relevant stimuli for the 2 problems are from different dimensions (an extradimensional or ED shift). Four experiments examined ID and ED shifts in spatial learning. Rats trained on 2 spatial problems learned the 2nd more rapidly than rats whose 1st problem had been nonspatial. But this difference between ID and ED shifts depended on the spatial relationship between rewarded (S+) and unrewarded (S-) alternatives in the 2 spatial problems. The results imply that rats trained on a spatial discrimination do not learn to attend to all spatial landmarks but only to those that serve to differentiate S+ and S-. Auditory spatial attention was investigated by manipulating spatial and temporal relations between an auditory spatial cue and an auditory target. The principal findings were that performance improved as time available to shift attention to a cued spatial position increased, accurate spatial cues facilitated performance more than inaccurate cues, performance was virtually identical for shifts of attention ranging from 0° and 180°, and performance declined as the distance of an unexpected target from a cued spatial location increased. The experiments provided evidence that auditory attention may be allocated to a specific location in response to an auditory spatial cue and that the time required to shift attention does not appear to depend on the distance of the shift. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the spatial distribution of auditory attention may be described most accurately by a gradient model in which attentional resources decline gradually with distance from a focal point. The present study aimed at showing a spatial compatibility effect (and, by implication, a right–left subdivision of space) solely attributable to the orienting of attention. Five groups of 8 normal Ss were required to give right–left discriminative responses to stimuli presented within one of 6 empty boxes arranged in a horizontal row. Reaction times and errors were recorded. A right–left grouping of the boxes occurred regardless of whether Ss' fixation was kept at the intermediate position (Exp 1) or at one extremity (Exp 2) of the row. In Exps 3 and 4, Ss' attention was not aligned with a fixed position but was moved, through peripheral cues, from trial to trial and positioned between different pairs of adjacent boxes. Results showed that the display was again subdivided into 2 regions and that the reference point for the right–left subdivision was the focus of attention. In Exp 5, eye position was instrumentally monitored, and Ss' attention was directed by central cues. The results confirmed that the focusing of attention leads to a right–left partitioning of space. Directing attention to a position in space brings about a right–left perceptual organization that predominates over that provided by the other egocentric reference axes.
