The Internet Engineering Task Force standardizes new IP technologies such as Differentiated Services and IP security that allow Internet service providers to offer new and enhanced network-level services. There is a need for a measurement infrastructure to monitor services, especially for support of end-to-end services across the Internet. The infrastructure should provide a safe way for customers to monitor the enhanced properties of the services they use. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) provides advanced signaling and control functionality for a wide variety of multimedia services. SIP can efficiently and scalably locate resources based on a location-independent name and then negotiate session characteristics. It can find use in applications ranging from Internet telephony and conferencing to instant messaging, event notification, and the control of networked devices. There are a variety of emerging technologies and protocol enhancements designed to extend Internet services to mobile users, including operation over more dynamic, heterogeneous wireless interconnections. Many different approaches and protocols have been proposed, and there are even multiple standardization efforts within the Internet Engineering Task Force that address portions of the overall goal. Surveys recent and current standardization work by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) on Internet communication protocols. The author describes the IPng project and the IPv6 protocol that will form the basis for upper-layer protocols such as resource reservation, transport and application level protocols. Telecommunications regulatory agencies in the US and Canada, responding to complaints, are looking at how far Internet service providers (ISPs) can go in limiting customers' bandwidth and how much information they must disclose about how they're doing it. The growth of wireless networking is enabling many Internet hosts to become mobile. This article describes and compares three alternatives for providing host mobility managment in IP-based networks. We first summarize the operation and behavior of Mobile IP, on which the Internet Engineering Task Force has focused as a host mobility solution. We next describe two alternative architectures (Migrate and host identity protocol) for providing mobility management. Our qualitative comparison focuses on contrasting the different performance, security, deployment, scalability, and robustness properties of each approach.  相似文献
