Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology 1986: Martin T. Orne.

Martin T. Orne, the 1986 recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology, was presented with a check for $2,000 and an engrossed citation of his contribution. Orne receives this award "for his efforts to integrate psychological theory and methods with the pragmatic concerns of psychotherapy, medicine, and law. Through his research he has helped practitioners to realize the potential benefits and limitations of hypnosis, lie detection, sleep, and biofeedback, and the roles played by specific and nonspecific factors in psychotherapy and behavioral medicine. His analysis of the social context of the experiment has elucidated the importance of demand characteristics in shaping experience and behavior, and helped alter the way in which both experimentalists and clinicians evaluate the reactions of subjects, clients, and patients. The Award for Distinguished Scientific Applications of Psychology is presented to a person who, in the opinion of the Committee on Scientific Awards, has made distinguished theoretical or empirical advances leading to the understanding or amelioration of important practical problems. The 2009 winner of this award is Nancy E. Adler. A citation, biography, and selected bibliography of her works are provided. The Early Career Awards recognize the large number of excellent young psychologists. Recipients of this award may not have held a doctoral degree for more than nine years. For purposes of this award, psychology has been divided into 10 areas. The areas considered in 2009 and the recipients were behavioral and cognitive neuroscience (Adam K. Charles L. Brewer Award for Distinguished Teaching in Psychology: G. William Hill IV.

The 2004 Distinguished Teaching Award is awarded to G. William Hill IV. He is recognized as a superb teacher who has helped the Kennesaw State University faculty through ambitious programs in the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, built and sustained a regional psychology community through the vibrant Southeastern Conference on the Teaching of Psychology, and orchestrated highly successful national "best practice in psychology" conferences. Distinguished Contribution for Applications in Psychology Award for 1976.

The American Psychological Association's Distinguished Contribution for Applications in Psychology Award was given this year for the fourth time. This award is presented to a person who has engaged in a program of research that is both systematic and applied in character. The recipient is presented with a check for $1,000 and an engrossed citation of their contributions. This year's award was won by Fred S. Keller. The award was presented by Richard F.
