Thermodilution is the current standard for determination of cardiac output. The method is invasive and constitutes a risk for the patient. As an alternative CO2 rebreathing allows non-invasive cardiac output estimation using Ficks principle. The method relies on estimation of arterial CO2 partial pressure from end-tidal CO2 pressure and estimation of mixed venous CO2 partial pressure from end-tidal CO2 during rebreathing. Presumably the oxygenation of blood in the lung capillaries increases lung capillary CO2 pressure due to the Haldane effect, which during rebreathing may result in overestimation of the mixed venous CO2 pressure. However, the Haldane effect is not discussed in the current literature describing cardiac output estimation using CO2 rebreathing. The purpose of this study is to construct and verify a compartmental tidal breathing lung model to investigate the physiological mechanisms that influence the CO2 rebreathing technique. The model simulations show agreement with previous studies describing end-tidal to arterial differences in CO2 pressure and rebreathing with high and low O2 fractions in the rebreathing bag. In conclusion the simulations show that caution has to be taken when using end-tidal measurements to estimate CO2 pressures, especially during rebreathing where the Haldane effect causes mixed venous CO2 partial pressure to be substantially overestimated.  相似文献

Fifteen male primary school children, aged 10 years, were selected to carry school bags of 10, 15 and 20% of their own body weights, where 0% body weight was used as a control. Maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) tests were conducted on a motorized treadmill using a continuous incremental protocol. During the load carrying test, subjects walked on a treadmill at 1.1 m s(-1) for 20 min at each load condition. Blood pressures were measured before, immediately following, and at 3 and 5 min after every trial. Heart rate and expired VO2 were recorded before, during and 5 min after walking using a cardiopulmonary function system. The results showed a significant difference in oxygen uptake, energy expenditure and the recovery of blood pressure rise for between 10 and 20% body weight load conditions. The carrying weight of a school bag for children could be recommended as 10% of body weight because it was not significantly different from 0% load in the metabolic cost.  相似文献

This study used partitional calorimetry to determine the influence of fluid replacement on heat storage during uncompensable heat stress. Eight males performed either light (L; level treadmill walking at 0.97 m x s(-1) (3.5 km x h(-1)) or heavy (H; 1.33 m x s(-1) (4.8 km x h(-1)) at a 4% grade) exercise at 40 degrees C and 30% relative humidity while wearing nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) protective clothing. Subjects received either no fluid (NF), or 200 or 250 ml of fluid (F) as warm water at approximately 35 degrees C immediately before and every 15 min during the L and H trials respectively. Similar reductions in heart rate were observed at both metabolic rates with F but rectal temperature responses were not different between F and NF. Tolerance time was extended during L/F (106.5 +/- 22.1 min) compared with L/NF (93.1 +/- 20.8 min) but fluid replacement had no influence during H (59.8 +/- 9.5 min and 58.3 +/- 11.1 min for F and NF respectively). Fluid replacement also had no effect on the rate of heat storage during L (108.2 +/- 20.6 W x m(-2) and 111.0 +/- 22.6 W x m(-2) for F and NF respectively) and H (172.5 +/- 11.5 W x m(-2) and 182.1 +/- 15.8 W x m(-2) for F and NF respectively). However, heat storage expressed per unit of mass was significantly increased during L/F (18.5 +/- 4.0 kJ x kg(-1) ) compared with the other trials (16.3 +/- 4.8 kJ x kg(-1), 16.6 +/- 3.0 kJ x kg(-1) and 16.7 +/- 4.0 kJ x kg(-1) for L/NF, H/F and H/NF respectively). It was concluded that fluid replacement does not alter the rate of heat storage during uncompensable heat stress but does increase the heat storage capacity during light exercise when tolerance times are > 60 min.  相似文献

The effectiveness of intermittent, microclimate cooling for men who worked in US Army chemical protective clothing (modified mission-oriented protective posture level 3; MOPP 3) was examined. The hypothesis was that intermittent cooling on a 2 min on-off schedule using a liquid cooling garment (LCG) covering 72% of the body surface area would reduce heat strain comparably to constant cooling. Four male subjects completed three experiments at 30 degrees C, 30% relative humidity wearing the LCG under the MOPP 3 during 80 min of treadmill walking at 224 +/- 5 W . m(-2). Water temperature to the LCG was held constant at 21 degrees C. The experiments were; 1) constant cooling (CC); 2) intermittent cooling at 2-min intervals (IC); 3) no cooling (NC). Core temperature increased (1.6 +/- 0.2 degrees C) in NC, which was greater than IC (0.5 +/- 0.2 degrees C) and CC (0.5 +/- 0.3 degrees C) ( p < 0.05). Mean skin temperature was higher during NC (36.1 +/- 0.4 degrees C) than IC (33.7 +/- 0.6 degrees C) and CC (32.6 +/- 0.6 degrees C) and mean skin temperature was higher during IC than CC ( p < 0.05). Mean heart rate during NC (139 +/- 9 b . min(-1)) was greater than IC (110 +/- 10 b . min(-1)) and CC (107 +/- 9 b . min(-1)) ( p < 0.05). Cooling by conduction (K) during NC (94 +/- 4 W . m(-2)) was lower than IC (142 +/- 7 W . m(-2)) and CC (146 +/- 4 W . m(-2)) ( p < 0.05). These findings suggest that IC provided a favourable skin to LCG gradient for heat dissipation by conduction and reduced heat strain comparable to CC during exercise-heat stress in chemical protective clothing.  相似文献

Several tools are sold and recommended for closing and sealing flexible intermediate bulk containers (bulk bags) which are used to transport product that has been mined and processed. However, there is limited information on the risks, physical demands, or the benefits of using one tool over another. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physical demands involved with two closing methods and several sealing tools in order to provide recommendations for selecting tools to reduce exposure to risk factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders. In this study, twelve participants completed bag closing and sealing tasks using two different closing methods and eight sealing tools on two types of bulk bags. Physical demands and performance were evaluated using muscle activity, perceived exertion, subjective ratings of use, and time. Results indicate that using the “flowering” method to close bags required on average 32% less muscle activity, 30% less perceived exertion, 42% less time, and was preferred by participants compared to using the “snaking” method. For sealing, there was no single method significantly better across all measures; however, using a pneumatic cable tie gun consistently had the lowest muscle activity and perceived exertion ratings. The pneumatic cable tie gun did require approximately 33% more time to seal the bag compared to methods without a tool, but the amount of time to seal the bag was comparable to using other tools. Further, sealing a spout bulk bag required on average 13% less muscle activity, 18% less perceived exertion, 35% less time, and was preferred by participants compared to sealing a duffle bulk bag. The current results suggest that closing the spout bag using the flowering method and sealing the bag using the pneumatic cable tie gun that is installed with a tool balancer is ergonomically advantageous. Our findings can help organizations select methods and tools that pose the lowest physical demands when closing and sealing bulk bags.  相似文献

Masonry workers face some of the highest physical demands in the construction industry where large bags of masonry material weighing 42.7 kg are commonly handled by mason tenders who mix the mortar, distribute mortar and bricks/blocks, and erect/dismantle scaffolding throughout the day. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using half-weight bags (21.4 kg) on reducing the biomechanical loading, physiological response, and perceived exertions. Ten male subjects performed asymmetric lifting tasks simulating unloading bags from a pallet. Muscle activity, trunk kinematics, heart rate, blood pressure and subjective rating data were collected. Spine loads were predicted from a well-validated EMG-assisted model. Bag weight, lift type, bag height at origin, and asymmetry at destination significantly impacted the spine loads. While there was a 50% reduction in bag weight, the peak loads for the half-weight bags were only 25% less than the more available full-weight bags (a reduction of about 320 N of shear and 1000 N of compression). Lifts allowing movement of the feet reduced the loads by about 22% in shear and 27% in compression compared to constrained postures. Interestingly, cumulative spine loads were greater for the lighter bags than the heavy bags (∼40%). The subjective ratings of exertion and risk were significantly lower for the lighter bags.

Relevance to Industry

The reduction in peak spine loading for the half-weight bags, particularly at the higher heights and when the feet were allowed to move could significantly reduce the injuries of masonry workers. However, there were trade-offs with cumulative loads that may minimize the reduced risk. Overall, given the limited amount of time lifting bags, the reduction of peak loads  相似文献

A series of psychophysical lifting studies was conducted to establish maximum acceptable weights of lift (MAWL) for three supply items commonly handled in underground coal mines (rock dust bags, ventilation stopping blocks, and crib blocks). Each study utilized 12 subjects, all of whom had considerable experience working in underground coal mines. Effects of lifting in four postures (standing, stooping under a 1·5m ceiling, stooping under a l·2m ceiling, and kneeling) were investigated together with four lifting conditions (combinations of lifting symmetry and lifting height). The frequency of lifting was set at four per min, and the task duration was 15?min. Posture significantly affected the MAWL for the rock dust bag (standing MAWL was 7% greater than restricted postures and kneeling MAWL was 6·4% less than stooped); however, posture interacted with lifting conditions for both of the other materials. Physiological costs were found to be significantly greater in the stooped postures compared with kneeling for all materials. Other contrasts (standing versus restricted postures, stooping under 1·5?m ceiling versus stooping under l·2?m ceiling) did not exhibit significantly different levels of energy expenditure. Energy expenditure was significantly affected by vertical lifting height; however, the plane of lifting had little influence on metabolic cost. Recommended acceptable workloads for the three materials are 20·0?kg for the rock dust bag, 16·5?kg for the ventilation stopping block, and 14·7?kg for the crib block. These results suggest that miners are often required to lift supplies that are substantially heavier than psychophysically acceptable lifting limits.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between actual time to exhaustion or time limit (ATLIM) during bicycle ergometry and predicted time to exhaustion (PTLIM) from the Critical Power (CP) test. fourteen males (means +/- SD = 22.36 +/- 2.13 years) volunteered as subjects for this investigation. The subjects visited the laboratory on seven occasions separated by at least 24 h. The first two visits were used for the determination of CP; during the remaining sessions the subjects rode a Monarch bicycle ergometer at power loadings of CP - 20%, CP, CP + 20%, CP + 40% and CP + 60% for the determination of ATLIM. Theoretically, power loadings less than or equal to CP can be maintained indefinitely without exhaustion and the PTLIM for power loadings greater than CP can be estimated from the results of the CP test. The accuracy of the CP test for estimating the time to exhaustion during bicycle ergometry was determined by comparing ATLIM to PTLIM using correlation coefficients, standard error of estimates and related t-tests. The results of this study indicated that there were no significant (p greater than 0.05) differences between ATLIM and PTLIM for power loadings greater than CP (ATLIM vs PTLIM at CP + 20% = 8.19 +/- 3.90 vs 7.13 +/- 2.69 min, t = 2.106, r = 0.893, SEE = 1.21 min; CP + 40% = 3.60 +/- 1.37 vs 3.46 +/- 1.18 min, t = 0.842, r = 0.882, SEE = 0.556 min; CP + 60% = 2.36 +/- 0.95 vs 2.32 +/- 0.79 min; t = 0.328 r = 0.841, SEE = 0.428 min).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Thirteen male children ascending and descending stairs with loads that equalled 0%, 10%, 15% and 20% of their body weight were the subject of our research: the boys were wearing an asymmetrical single-strap athletic bag or a symmetrical double-strap backpack during our experiments with them. The maximum spinal tilt to the loading side and to the support side, and the range of spinal motions, were obtained by using a motion analysis system. Our results showed that symmetry of spinal posture was observed both when they ascended staircase with all loads and descended in a backpack. When carrying an athletic bag with 15% and 20% of their body weight while ascending the staircase, the lateral spinal tilt to the supporting side was significantly increased. We concluded that a symmetrical backpack with a load not exceeding 20% or an asymmetrical single-strap athletic bag with a load not exceeding 10% should be recommended for school children in order to promote safer staircase use. STATEMENT OF RELEVANCE: Children carrying heavy school bags may develop spinal problems. This study suggested that when they are using stairs, a symmetrical backpack with a load within 20% body weight is acceptable for them. When they are carrying an asymmetrical single-strap athletic bag, the bag's weight should not exceed 10% of the body weight in order to avoid excessive spinal tilt.  相似文献

A simple, economic, and accurate microprocessor system for the determination of mixed venous PCO2 has been described. Through the automatic gas mixing system, it is possible to facilitate the use of the rebreathing equilibration technique for the purpose of cardiac output calculations. It was also possible to flush the rebreathing bag within a brief time, providing the investigator with an automatic three-way valve driven by a solenoid.  相似文献

There is incomplete information about how physically demanding rescue work may be. The aim therefore of this paper was to examine the physiological responses of firefighters during a simulated rescue of hospital patients and to relate the firefighters' performance to their endurance, strength and working technique. Fourteen part-time male firefighters with a maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2max)) of 4.4 +/- 0.3 l/min (mean +/- SD) served as subjects in this study. First, each firefighter ascended six floors (a 20.5 m vertical ascent) carrying tools, wearing protective clothing and a breathing apparatus, an extra mass of 37 kg. He thereafter 'rescued' six persons by dragging each person on a fire-sheet on a flat floor. The technique used was recorded and the O(2) uptake and the heart rate were measured continuously during the whole operation. The blood lactate concentration and the subjective rating of perceived exertion were measured during and just after the rescue. The VO(2max) and the muscle strength were measured in the laboratory. The whole operation was carried out in the course of 5-9 min. The operation was a virtual all-out effort and the peak blood lactate concentration was 13 +/- 3 mmol/l. The peak oxygen uptake was 3.7 +/- 0.5 l/min (84% of the VO(2max)) during the operation. Large and heavy firefighters carried out the task faster than smaller ones. The VO(2max) in absolute terms and the dragging technique used were both related to the rescue performance. Rescuing patients at a hospital was physically very demanding and the time needed to complete the task depended on the VO(2max) in absolute values and the working technique used. A minimum VO(2max) of 4 l/min for firefighters was recommended.  相似文献

This study introduces a revised definition for fuzzy bags. It is based on the definition of bags given by Delgado et al. (Int J Intell Syst 2009;24:706–721) in which each bag has two parts: function and summary information. The new definition is given as a special case of L‐fuzzy bags, where L is a complete lattice. By some examples, the new concept is illustrated. Furthermore, the algebraic structure of L‐fuzzy bags is studied and the concept of α‐cuts, L‐fuzzy bag relations, and related theorems are given.  相似文献

Traditional content-based image retrieval (CBIR) scheme with assumption of independent individual images in large-scale collections suffers from poor retrieval performance. In medical applications, images usually exist in the form of image bags and each bag includes multiple relevant images of the same perceptual meaning. In this paper, based on these natural image bags, we explore a new scheme to improve the performance of medical image retrieval. It is feasible and efficient to search the bag-based medical image collection by providing a query bag. However, there is a critical problem of noisy images which may present in image bags and severely affect the retrieval performance. A new three-stage solution is proposed to perform the retrieval and handle the noisy images. In stage 1, in order to alleviate the influence of noisy images, we associate each image in the image bags with a relevance degree. In stage 2, a novel similarity aggregation method is proposed to incorporate image relevance and feature importance into the similarity computation process. In stage 3, we obtain the final image relevance in an adaptive way which can consider both image bag similarity and individual image similarity. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach can improve the image retrieval performance significantly.  相似文献

Automatic content-based image categorization is a challenging research topic and has many practical applications. Images are usually represented as bags of feature vectors, and the categorization problem is studied in the Multiple-Instance Learning (MIL) framework. In this paper, we propose a novel learning technique which transforms the MIL problem into a standard supervised learning problem by defining a feature vector for each image bag. Specifically, the feature vectors of the image bags are grouped into clusters and each cluster is given a label. Using these labels, each instance of an image bag can be replaced by a corresponding label to obtain a bag of cluster labels. Data mining can then be employed to uncover common label patterns for each image category. These label patterns are converted into bags of feature vectors; and they are used to transform each image bag in the data set into a feature vector such that each vector element is the distance of the image bag to a distinct pattern bag. With this new image representation, standard supervised learning algorithms can be applied to classify the images into the pre-defined categories. Our experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed technique in categorization accuracy as compared to state-of-the-art methods.  相似文献

Multiple instance learning (MIL) is concerned with learning from sets (bags) of objects (instances), where the individual instance labels are ambiguous. In this setting, supervised learning cannot be applied directly. Often, specialized MIL methods learn by making additional assumptions about the relationship of the bag labels and instance labels. Such assumptions may fit a particular dataset, but do not generalize to the whole range of MIL problems. Other MIL methods shift the focus of assumptions from the labels to the overall (dis)similarity of bags, and therefore learn from bags directly. We propose to represent each bag by a vector of its dissimilarities to other bags in the training set, and treat these dissimilarities as a feature representation. We show several alternatives to define a dissimilarity between bags and discuss which definitions are more suitable for particular MIL problems. The experimental results show that the proposed approach is computationally inexpensive, yet very competitive with state-of-the-art algorithms on a wide range of MIL datasets.  相似文献

The relationship between exhaustion time (t(lim)) and the work performed at the end of constant-power exercises can be described by a linear relationship (Wlim = a + b t(lim)) for work involving the whole body (eg cycling) or part of the body (eg knee extensions). The slope b in the equation is termed the critical power and has been proposed as an index of the capacity to perform work over a long period of time. The first objective of the present study was to compare the values of slopes b calculated from whole-body work of short duration, ie maximal and supra-maximal cycling exercises (slope b1), with the values calculated from the same work, the durations of which were between 3.5 and 35 min (slope b3), as in the protocols used by Scherrer and Monod (1960) for body-part work. Slope b1 was significantly higher than slope b3 in 10 subjects who performed 5 cycling exhausting exercises (60, 73, 86, 100 and 120% of maximal aerobic power (MAP) in watts). Exhaustion times corresponding to power outputs equivalent to b1 and b3 were equal to 29.0 +/- 19.1 min and 48.6 +/- 9.8 min respectively. Moreover, the exhaustion times at 60 and 73%,MAP were significantly correlated with slope b3 (expressed in %MAP) but not with slope b1. Consequently, slope b3 should be considered as the critical power instead of slope b1 as in some studies in the literature (Moritani et al, 1981). The second objective was to study the physiological significance of the critical power (slope b3) of whole-body work (cycling). The workload that corresponded to a lactate steady state was not significantly different from b3 (68.8 +/- 6.0 vs 68.7 +/- 6.3% MAP). Nevertheless, slope b3 represents a workload corresponding to a slight but significant drift of heart rate or oxygen uptake. These results probably explain why b3 is a power which can be maintained for a long time but not beyond about l h in an average subject.  相似文献

Other contrasts (standing versus restricted postures, stooping under 1.5 m ceiling versus stopping under 1.2 m ceiling) did not exhibit significantly different levels of energy expenditure. Energy expenditure was significantly affected by vertical lifting height; however, the plane of lifting had little influence on metabolic cost. Recommended acceptable workloads for the three materials are 20.0 kg for the rock dust bag, 16.5 kg for the ventilation stopping block, and 14.7 kg for the crib block. These results suggest that miners are often required to lift supplies that are substantially heavier than psychophysically acceptable lifting limits.
