Periodontitis affects around 15 per cent of human adult populations. While periodontal treatment aimed at removing the bacterial cause of the disease is generally very successful, the ability predictably to regenerate the damaged tissues remains a major unmet objective for new treatment strategies. Existing treatments include the use of space-maintaining barrier membranes (guided tissue regeneration), use of graft materials, and application of bioactive molecules to induce regeneration, but their overall effects are relatively modest and restricted in application. The periodontal ligament is rich in mesenchymal stem cells, and the understanding of the signalling molecules that may regulate their differentation has increased enormously in recent years. Applying these principles for the development of new tissue engineering strategies for periodontal regeneration will require further work to determine the efficacy of current experimental preclinical treatments, including pharmacological application of growth factors such as bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) or Wnts, use of autologous stem cell reimplantation strategies, and development of improved biomaterial scaffolds. This article describes the background to this problem, addresses the current status of periodontal regeneration, including the background biology, and discusses the potential for some of these experimental therapies to achieve the goal of clinically predictable periodontal regeneration.  相似文献

Markers for the lymphatic endothelium: In search of the holy grail?   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12  
The ability to discriminate reliably at the histological level between blood and lymphatic microcapillaries would greatly assist the study of a number of biological and pathological questions and may also be of clinical utility. A structure-function comparison of these types of microcapillary suggests that differences which could function as markers to allow discrimination between blood and lymphatic endothelium should exist. Indeed, to date a variety of such markers have been proposed, including basement membrane components, constituents of junctional complexes such as desmoplakin and enzymes such as 5'-nucleotidase. Additionally, a variety of cell surface molecules are thought to be differentially expressed, including PAL-E, VEGFR-3, podoplanin, and LYVE-1. Several of the lymphatic markers proposed in the literature require further characterization to demonstrate fully their lymphatic specificity and some have proven not to be reliable. The relative merits and drawbacks of each of the proposed markers is discussed.  相似文献

We developed a new method for measuring γ-ray energies in the internal calibration of a radioactive source under investigation. The measurements were carried out with the spectrometer of delayed coincidences and an optical delay line. This method allows the energies of the reference peak and the γ-ray peak under investigation to be compared, even if they are close or coincide. The possibility of precise γ-ray energy measurements is illustrated with60Co and154Eu isotopes.  相似文献

PID controllers are still widely practiced in the industrial systems. In the literature, many publications can be found considering PID controller design for unstable processes. However, owing to the structural limitations of PID controllers, generally, good closed loop performance cannot be achieved with a PID for controlling unstable processes and usually a step response with a high overshoot and oscillation is obtained. On the other hand, PI–PD controllers are proved to give very satisfactory closed loop performances for unstable processes. The paper presents a simple design method to tune parameters of a PI–PD controller for the control of the unstable processes with time delay. The proposed method is based on plotting the stability boundary locus, which is a locus dependent on the parameters of the controller and frequency, in the parameter plane. The method uses a new concept named centroid of the convex stability region. Simulation examples and an experimental application are given to illustrate the superiority of the proposed method over some existing ones.  相似文献

An inclusive neutral pion polarimeter is proposed for the RHIC collider, which is coming into operation, and the proton ring of the HERA-p accelerator (with polarized protons). The advantages of this polarimeter are a high counting rate, high analyzing power, complete azimuthal coverage, wide operating energy range (from the beam-injection energy to the ultimate accelerator or collider energy), and the possibility of switching from the collider mode to the mode of fixed target and vice versa. The measurement time is estimated for the HERA-p- and RHIC-beam polarization under the assumption that the analyzing power is equal to that for the E704 experiment (Fermilab) and is independent of the initial energy.  相似文献

Femoral shaft fractures after total hip arthroplasty (THA) remain a serious problem, since there is no optimal surgical repair method. Virtually all studies that examined surgical repair methods have done so clinically or experimentally. The present study assessed injury patterns computationally by developing three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) models that were validated experimentally. The investigation evaluated three different constructs for the fixation of Vancouver B1 periprosthetic femoral shaft fractures following THA. Experimentally, three bone plate repair methods were applied to a synthetic femur with a 5 mm fracture gap near the tip of a total hip implant. Repair methods were identical distal to the fracture gap, but used cables only (construct A), screws only (construct B), or cables plus screws (construct C) proximal to the fracture gap. Specimens were oriented in 15 degrees adduction to simulate the single-legged stance phase of walking, subjected to 1000 N of axial force, and instrumented with strain gauges. Computationally, a linearly elastic and isotropic 3D FE model was developed to mimic experiments. Results showed excellent agreement between experimental and FE strains, yielding a Pearson linearity coefficient, R2, of 0.92 and a slope for the line of best data fit of 1.06. FE-computed axial stiffnesses were 768 N/mm (construct A), 1023 N/mm (construct B), and 1102 N/mm (construct C). FE surfaces stress maps for cortical bone showed Von Mises stresses, excluding peaks, of 0-8 MPa (construct A), 0-15 MPa (construct B), and 0-20 MPa (construct C). Cables absorbed the majority of load, followed by the plates and then the screws. Construct A yielded peak stress at one of the empty holes in the plate. Constructs B and C had similar bone stress patterns, and can achieve optimal fixation.  相似文献

Abstract

A β+–γ discrimination set‐up was developed and applied to the 22Na radioisotope. The radioisotope emits positrons (β+) and these positrons create γ rays by annihilating with electrons. These annihilation γ rays were used here, and the discrimination between these positrons and γ rays was investigated by the coincidence measurement between time signals and the energy signals. The detection system presented here uses a 3 inch (diameter) by 3 inch (length) NaI(Tl) inorganic scintillation detector for γ detection and 3 inch (diameter) by 3 inch (length) plastic scintillation detector for β+ detection.  相似文献

Results of an experimental study of the density distribution in a small-size (1–2 mm in diameter) supersonic gas jet in vacuum are reported. The measurements are performed by the developed Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor, which consists of a microlens array with 100 × 100 elements and a video camera with a resolution of 2048 × 2048 pixels. The reliability of measurements in terms of the space and time resolution, as well as in terms of the minimum levels of phase changes induced by the tested object, is analyzed.  相似文献

The results of an experimental study of the spatial resolution of a spherical quartz crystal for X rays at = 8.42 Å are presented. An experimental design for the two-dimensional X-ray imaging of test objects was used to determine the spatial resolution of such a crystal. Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) is a pleiotropic cytokine that is constitutively produced by leukemic cells in B Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (B-CLL). It has been shown to have autocrine and paracrine functions in normal B cells and in B lymphoproliferative diseases. This study was conducted to determine the effect of TNF alpha (in vitro) on CD20 expression on cells from patients with B-CLL. Currently, anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody therapy is becoming a second line treatment in the management of B cell disorders like low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and B-CLL. Our results demonstrate amply that very low doses of TNF alpha (0. 0125 ng/ml) can be used to significantly increase CD20 expression on cells from patients of B-CLL as evidenced by increases in both percentage positivity and mean fluorescence intensity. The upregulation is evident as early as 24 hours and is maintained for up to 72 hours. We propose that the upregulation is a direct result of in vitro differentiation stimulated by TNF alpha. The results presented can be exploited in the designing of priming protocols prior to antibody therapy and this is discussed.  相似文献

Various approaches have been developed for numerical predictions of unsteady cavitating turbulent flows. To verify the influence of a turbulence model on the simulation of unsteady attached sheet-cavitating flows in centrifugal pumps, two modified RNG k-? models (DCM and FBM) are implemented in ANSYS-CFX 13.0 by second development technology, so as to compare three widespread turbulence models in the same platform. The simulation has been executed and compared to experimental results for three different flow coefficients. For four operating conditions, qualitative comparisons are carried out between experimental and numerical cavitation patterns, which are visualized by a high-speed camera and depicted as isosurfaces of vapor volume fraction α v = 0.1, respectively. The comparison results indicate that, for the development of the sheet attached cavities on the suction side of the impeller blades, the numerical results with different turbulence models are very close to each other and overestimate the experiment ones slightly. However, compared to the cavitation performance experimental curves, the numerical results have obvious difference: the prediction precision with the FBM is higher than the other two turbulence models. In addition, the loading distributions around the blade section at midspan are analyzed in detail. The research results suggest that, for numerical prediction of cavitating flows in centrifugal pumps, the turbulence model has little influence on the development of cavitation bubbles, but the advanced turbulence model can significantly improve the prediction precision of head coefficients and critical cavitation numbers.  相似文献

The paper has described a model of the static load on the hip joint that takes into account the anthropological parameters and a mathematical model of the change in the resistance of the endoprosthesis under the influence of an external load at different rotation angles of the cup component. The theoretical studies have revealed the character of the changes and assessed the possible ranges of variations in the diagnostic parameter that are required to develop diagnostic equipment and methods for testing and interpreting diagnostic information during the tribotesting of individual types of implants.  相似文献

The analysis of the influence of the electron-trajectory curvature in the anode–cathode gap of a vacuum diode on its impedance during generation of high-current electron beams is performed, and the applicability of the one-dimensional Child–Langmuir formula for the electron-current calculation is evaluated. The results of an experimental study of a flat diode with explosive-emission graphite, copper, and carbon- fabric cathodes and also with a multipointed cathode are presented. These investigations were performed on the TEU-500 accelerator (350–500 kV, 60 ns). A strip diode with a graphite cathode was also studied in the mode of magnetic self-insulation of electrons. The experiments were performed on the TEMP-4М accelerators (150–200 kV, 400–600 ns). The investigation results showed that the satisfactory coincidence of the experimental values of the total current with those calculated from the one-dimensional Child–Langmuir formula (for the working area of the cathode) is observed in diodes not only in the absence of a change in the electron trajectory in the anode–cathode gap but also upon a deflection of the trajectory from the normal to the cathode surface by an angle of <90°. An increase in the electron current owing to a decrease in the anode–cathode gap and an increase in the emission area of the cathode during the cathode-plasma production and also at the expense of the presence of microirregularities on the cathode is properly described by the onedimensional Child-Langmuir formula, if the above factors are taken into account.  相似文献
