The influence of cigarette smoking on resting energy expenditure (REE) in normal-weight and obese smokers was investigated. Participants were 20 normal-weight and 20 obese female smokers assessed over a 2-day period. The results indicated that REE increased in both obese and normal-weight smokers after smoking, but the increase was greater for normal-weight participants. The normal-weight group showed a 9.7%, 5.8%, and a 3.6% increase in REE during the three 10-min blocks constituting the 30-min postsmoking phase. However, the obese group showed a 3.9% and a 0.7% increase in REE and a 0.8% decrease in REE during this postsmoking phase. Between-group comparisons revealed a differential rate of change in REE after smoking, indicating that the obese group's change of REE at every postsmoking time point was on average 70 kcal/day below that of the normal-weight group. The metabolic effect of smoking is reproducible, and the obese smokers reliably show an attenuated effect. However, the reliability of the change is lower for both normal-weight and obese smokers. The results have potential implications for discouraging obese persons from taking up smoking and intervening among those who already smoke. Children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) typically gain weight at excessive rates during and after therapy, and a high proportion of young adult survivors are obese. Previous studies have failed to identify the abnormalities in energy balance that predispose these children to obesity. The aim of this study was to determine the cause of excess weight gain in children treated for ALL by testing the hypothesis that energy expenditure is reduced in these patients. Twenty children [9 boys, 11 girls; mean age 10.9 (3.2) y] treated for ALL who had shown excess weight gain, but were not obese [mean body mass index SD score 0.70 (1.04)], were closely and individually matched with 20 healthy control children [9 boys, 11 girls; mean age 10.7 (3.0) y; mean body mass index SD score 0.27 (0.91)]. In each child we measured total energy expenditure by doubly-labeled water method, resting energy expenditure, energy expended on habitual physical activity, and energy intake. Total energy expenditure was significantly higher in control subjects than in patients: mean paired difference 1185 kJ/d (282 kcal/d), 95% confidence interval (CI) 218-2152. This difference was largely due to reduced energy expended on habitual physical activity in the patients. Resting energy expenditure was lower in the patients: mean paired difference 321 kJ/d (76 kcal/d), 95% CI 100-541. Energy intake was also lower in the patients: mean paired difference 1001 kJ/d (238 kcal/d), 95% CI 93-1909. Children treated for ALL are predisposed to excess weight gain, and subsequently obesity, by reduced total energy expenditure secondary to reduced habitual physical activity. Prevention of obesity in ALL should focus on modest increases in habitual physical activity, modest restriction of dietary intake, and monitoring of excess weight gain.  相似文献

The resting metabolic rate (RMR) and the thermic effect of a meal (TEM) were measured in a group of 16 prepubertal (8.8 +/- 0.3 y) obese children (43.6 +/- 9.2 kg) and compared with a group of 10 age-matched (8.6 +/- 0.4 y), normal-weight children (31.0 +/- 6.0 kg). The RMR was higher in the obese than in the control children (4971 +/- 485 vs 4519 +/- 326 kJ/d, P < 0.05); after the RMR was adjusted for the effect of fat-free mass (FFM) the values were not significantly different (4887 +/- 389 vs 4686 +/- 389 kJ/d). The thermic response to a liquid mixed meal, expressed as a percentage of the energy content of the meal, was significantly lower in obese than in control children (4.4 +/- 1.2% vs 5.9 +/- 1.7%, P < 0.05). The blunted TEM shown by the obese children could favor weight gain and suggests that the defect in thermogenesis reported in certain obese adults may have already originated early in life.  相似文献

Obesity could be due to excess energy intake or decreased energy expenditure (EE). To evaluate this, we studied 18 obese females (148 +/- 8% of ideal body weight [IBW], mean +/- SD) before and after achieving and stabilizing at IBW for at least 2 mo and a control group of 14 never obese females (< 110% of IBW or < 30% fat). In the obese, reduced obese, and never obese groups, the percent of body fat was 41 +/- 4%, 27 +/- 4%, and 25 +/- 3%; total energy expenditure (TEE) was 2704 +/- 449, 2473 +/- 495, and 2259 +/- 192 kcal/24 h; while resting metabolic rate was 1496 +/- 169, 1317 +/- 159, and 1341 +/- 103 kcal/24 h, respectively. 15 obese subjects who withdrew from the study had a mean initial body composition and EE similar to the subjects who were successful in achieving IBW. In 10 subjects followed for at least one year after stabilizing at IBW there was no significant relationship between the deviation from predicted TEE at IBW and weight regain. These studies indicate that, in a genetically heterogeneous female population, neither the propensity to become obese nor to maintain the obese state are due to an inherent metabolic abnormality characterized by a low EE.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the heart-rate monitoring with the doubly labelled water (2H2(18)O) method to estimate total daily energy expenditure in obese and non-obese children. DESIGN: Cross sectional study of obese and normal weight children. SUBJECTS: 13 prepubertal children: six obese (4M, 2F, 9.1 +/- 1.5 years, 47.3 +/- 9.7 kg) and seven non-obese (3M, 4F, 9.3 +/- 0.6 years, 31.8 +/- 3.2 kg). MEASUREMENTS: Total daily energy expenditure was assessed by means of the doubly labelled water method (TEEDLW) and of heart-rate monitoring (TEEHR). RESULTS: TEEHR was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than TEEDLW in obese children (9.47 +/- 0.84 MJ/d vs 8.99 +/- 0.63 MJ/d) whereas it was not different in non-obese children (8.43 +/- 2.02 MJ/d vs 8.42 +/- 2.30 MJ/d, P = NS). The difference of TEE assessed by HR monitoring in the obese group averaged 6.2 +/- 4.7%. At the individual level, the degree of agreement (difference between TEEHR and TEEDLW +/- 2s.d.) was low both in obese (-0.36, 1.32 MJ/d) and in non-obese children (-1.30, 1.34 MJ/d). At the group level, the agreement between the two methods was good in nonobese children (95% c.i. for the bias:-0.59, 0.63 MJ/d) but not in obese children (0.04, 0.92 MJ/d). Duration of sleep and energy expenditure during resting and physical activity were not significantly different in the two groups. Patterns of heart-rate (or derived energy expenditure) during the day-time were similar in obese and non-obese children. CONCLUSION: The HR monitoring technique provides an estimation of TEE close to that assessed by the DLW method in non-obese prepubertal children. In comparison with DLW, the HR monitoring method yields a greater TEE value in obese children.  相似文献

Nineteen overweight girls 14.54 +/- 0.38 years of age were studied. Results were compared with those obtained in eight age-matched (14.07 +/- 0.51 years) and sex-matched normal weight controls. Energy expenditure (EE) was determined using open-circuit indirect calorimetry at rest, both after a 12-h fast and after an oral sucrose load of 3 g/kg ideal body weight. Food-induced thermogenesis (FIT) was evaluated by computing the area under the curve of the EE response above resting energy expenditure (REE) during the first 3 h after the sucrose load, REE (kcal/day) was higher in the overweight patients (1,818 +/- 46 vs. 1,527 +/- 67; p = 0.002); REE standardized by fat-free mass (FFM) (kcal/kg FFM/day) was lower in obese children than in controls (35.2 +/- 1.0 vs. 44.9 +/- 1.9; p = 0.0001). A linear correlation between REE and FFM was evidenced in both controls and overweight subjects (r = 0.78 and 0.68, respectively; p = 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). Actual REE in the obese children was significantly lower than the value predicted by applying the regression equation of REE on FFM in controls to the actual FFM in obese children (paired t test; p = 0.003). Reduced energy expenditure may predispose children to the development of obesity, but there are limited longitudinal studies to support this theory. We studied 75 white, preadolescent children over 4 y by taking annual measures of body composition and resting energy expenditure (by indirect calorimetry) and two annual measures of total energy expenditure and physical-activity-related energy expenditure (by doubly labeled water). Body composition of parents was assessed at the onset of the study with use of underwater weighing. The major outcome variable was the individual rate of change in fat mass (FM) adjusted for fat-free mass (FFM). The influence of sex, energy expenditure components, initial FM, and parental FM on the rate of change in FM was analyzed by hierarchical linear modeling and analysis of variance. The rate of change in absolute FM was 0.89 +/- 1.08 kg/y (range: -0.44 to 5.6 kg/y). The rate of change in FM adjusted for FFM was 0.08 +/- 0.64 kg/y (range: -1.45 to 2.22 kg/y) and was similar among children of two nonobese parents and children with one nonobese or one obese parent, but was significantly higher in children with two obese parents (0.61 +/- 0.87 kg/y). The major determinants of change in FM adjusted for FFM were sex (greater fat gain in girls), initial fatness, and parental fatness. None of the components of energy expenditure were inversely related to change in FM. The main predictors of change in FM relative to FFM during preadolescent growth are sex, initial fatness, and parental fatness, but not reduced energy expenditure.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the overall effect of paraplegia and pressure sores on resting metabolic rate. DESIGN: Unblinded, case-control study using a convenience sample. SETTING: Hospital primary care setting. PATIENTS: Fourteen individuals with paraplegia and pressure sores (PS-Para), 24 with paraplegia in good health (NPS-Para), and 23 non-spinal cord injury (SCI) controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The planned outcome measures consisted of resting metabolic rate, percent of predicted resting metabolic rate, resting metabolic rate per kilogram body weight, and resting metabolic rate per meter squared body surface area. Post hoc analyses were used to identify the effect of completeness of lesion, smoking, and pressure sores on percent of predicted resting metabolic rate and resting metabolic rate per kilogram body weight. RESULTS: Percent of predicted resting metabolic rate and resting metabolic rate per kilogram body weight were significantly higher in the PS-Para group than in the NPS-Para or control groups (115% +/- 4% vs 100% +/- 2% or 107% +/- 2%, p < .05) and (25.9 +/- 1.2 vs 21.4 +/- 0.6 or 22.5 +/- 0.4 kcal/kg, p < .05, respectively). The resting metabolic rate per meter squared body surface area was significantly higher in the PS-Para group than in NPS-Para group (973 +/- 39 vs 874 +/- 20kcal/m2, p < .05). In the PS-Para group, current smokers had significantly higher resting metabolic rate per kilogram body weight than nonsmokers (27.3 +/- 1.7 vs 24.0 +/- 1.4kcal/kg, p < .01). Controlling for the effects of smoking in a multiple regression model, those in the PS-Para group had significantly (p < .001) greater percent of predicted resting metabolic rate and resting metabolic rate per kilogram body weight than those in the NPS-Para group. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that individuals with SCI may have a decreased percent of predicted resting metabolic rate and those with pressure sores may have a hypermetabolic state. This hypermetabolic state is significantly higher than that resulting from smoking. Because ordinary prediction equations for energy expenditure may not be accurate when applied to subjects with paraplegia and pressure sores, quantification of energy needs by indirect calorimetry is recommended.  相似文献

A new 2H/1H and 18O/16O equilibration device was tested, standardized and employed for the determination of total energy expenditure. It was shown that overweight men and women have increased resting metabolic rate as well as increased total energy expenditure when compared to their lean counterparts. The effect of 57 days of moderate physical activity on the energy intake and balance of three obese women (187% of ideal weight) was investigated in a metabolic balance study. Food was offered in extra quantity, prepared in a palatable but simple fashion, and intake was covertly monitored. Expenditure was measured using the factorial method and indirect calorimetry done every 3 to 4 days. After a 5-day evaluation phase which no exercise was done, individual treadmill assignments were given to subjects to increase daily expenditure to 125% of sedentary levels. Mean dialy intake (1903 kcal/day) and expenditure (2882 kcal/day) did not change with time. As a result, negative energy balance was obtained and sustained. A consistent rate of weight loss (0.12 kg/day) at a reasonable cost (8200 kcal/kg)occurred. Therefore, obese women doing long-term moderate exercise do not compensate by an increase in caloric intake. This can produce a negative caloric balance when exercise is coupled with ad libitum selection of ordinary foods.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Leptin is the product of ob gene shown to regulate body fat in mice. It is produced by human adipose tissue as well, but its physiological functions in man are not known. We explored if there is a relationship in obese humans with serum leptin and energy and fuel metabolism. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study including 45 obese (10 men, 35 women; age and body mass index: 42 +/- 7 y and 35.1 +/- 3.6 kg/m2, respectively). MEASUREMENTS: Food intake by a four-day-food record, blood samples for serum leptin concentrations and resting energy expenditure by indirect calorimetry. RESULTS: Leptin concentrations showed an inverse association (adjusted for fat mass, age and sex) with resting energy expenditure, respiratory quotient and carbohydrate oxidation rate (r = -0.324, P < 0.05; r = -0.420, P < 0.01; r = 0.478, P = < 0.01, respectively), and interestingly, also with dietary fat intake (unadjusted r = -0.30, P < 0.05). Especially, leptin concentrations were elevated in those with low resting energy expenditure and respiratory quotient (below the median). CONCLUSION: Serum leptin concentrations in obese subjects showed an inverse association with resting energy expenditure, respiratory quotient and carbohydrate oxidation rate. The physiological significance of these associations is unclear at the moment but could indicate that obese subjects show resistance to the actions of leptin also outside the brain in terms of regulating metabolic rate and fuel metabolism.  相似文献

Reports of low energy intakes in trained female athletes imply they have an increased energetic efficiency. To address this question, we determined how energy balance was achieved in endurance-trained females cyclists and lean controls (n = 5 in each group). Daily energy expenditure was measured by using standardized physical activity protocols in a whole room calorimeter on two separate occasions: a cycling day and a noncycling day. Energy intake for weight maintenance was determined by a period of controlled feeding 5 days before and the day of each energy expenditure measurement. Energy balance was achieved in the cyclists on the cycling day while they consumed 2,900-3,000 kcal (their usual condition) and in controls on the noncycling day while they consumed 2,100-2,200 kcal (their usual condition). Total daily energy expenditure was not significantly different between the cyclists and controls on the noncycling day with both groups performing similar levels of activity. On the cycling day, daily energy expenditure was significantly greater in the cyclists vs. controls (P < 0.03) as a result of their greater amount of cycling activity. Components of daily energy expenditure, i.e., resting metabolic rate and thermic effect of food and activity (noncycling), were not significantly different between groups. Overall, we found no significant increase in the energetic efficiency of endurance-trained female cyclists compared with controls.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a school-based, low-volume strength training program on energy expenditure, strength, and physical fitness in obese prepubertal girls. METHODS: A longitudinal, 5-month strength training exercise program was undertaken by healthy, obese (> 95th percentile weight-for-height, N = 11) girls age 7-10 yr. The following were measured: strength by the one-repetition maximum test; fitness (VO2peak) by a treadmill exercise test; resting metabolic rate (RMR), 24-h sedentary energy expenditure (SEE), and sleeping metabolic rate (SMR) by room respiration calorimetry; and total energy expenditure (TEE) by the doubly labeled water method. Physical activity energy expenditure (AEE) was calculated as TEE-(RMR + 0.1.TEE) and physical activity level (PAL) as TEE/RMR. An age-matched, nonoverweight control group was measured for (VO2peak) and RMR over the same time period. RESULTS: Strength increased by 19.6 and 20.0% in the upper and lower body (P < 0.01), respectively. (VO2peak) (mL.min-1) increased in both groups over time (P < 0.05), but not when covaried for fat-free mass (FFM) or weight. After adjusting for FFM or weight, RMR did not change, but SMR and 24-h SEE decreased significantly in the exercise group. There were no changes in nonprotein respiratory quotient or substrate oxidation. No changes in TEE, AEE, and PAL occurred, either unadjusted or adjusted for FFM or weight. CONCLUSION: This long-term, school-based, low-volume strength training program favorably increases strength in obese prepubertal girls but does not increase their daily energy expenditure.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To measure energy expenditures of Alaskan sled dogs at rest and during racing under frigid conditions, using the doubly labeled water (DLW) technique. ANIMALS: 18 fit Alaskan sled dogs. PROCEDURE: Energy expenditure was measured in 9 dogs during a 490-km sled dog race by use of the DLW technique, whereby dogs were administered water enriched with nonradioactive isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen. Energy intake was determined by dietary analysis. Changes in background abundance of the isotopes 2H and 18O were monitored in 5 dogs that did not receive isotope-enriched water. RESULTS: Dogs completed the 490-km race at an average speed of 7 km/h at ambient temperature of -35 to -10 C. Total energy expenditure, measured by the DLW technique, was 47,100 +/- 5,900 kJ/d (4,400 +/- 400 kJ.kg-0.75/d), and metabolizable energy intake was 44,600 kJ/d (4,100 kJ.kg-0.75/d) during the 70-hour race. CONCLUSIONS: The sustained metabolic rate for these sled dogs during racing was extraordinarily high for a large mammal. This study validated use of the DLW technique in dogs with exceptionally high energy expenditure associated with prolonged exercise in the cold.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: It has previously been suggested that Alzheimer's disease patients have higher resting energy requirements than healthy individuals, which may contribute to their unexplained weight loss. We examined whether resting metabolic rate, the largest component of daily energy expenditure, is elevated in Alzheimer's patients compared with healthy older controls. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING: General Clinical Research Center and Baltimore VA Medical Center. PATIENTS: Twenty-five noninstitutionalized demented patients (74 +/- 8 years; mean +/- SD) with a wide range of Mini-Mental Examination scores (1 to 20) and 73 healthy older individuals (69 +/- 7 years). MEASUREMENTS: Resting metabolic rate was measured by indirect calorimetry, fat-free mass and fat mass by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, and daily energy intake by food diaries. RESULTS: No differences in fat-free mass and fat mass were noted between Alzheimer's disease patients and healthy older controls. Resting metabolic rate was similar in Alzheimer's disease patients (5446 +/- 962 kJ/day) and healthy older individuals (5647 +/- 887 kJ/day). These results persisted when resting metabolic rate was statistically adjusted for differences in body composition and age. CONCLUSION: These results provide no evidence for an elevation in resting energy requirements in noninstitutionalized demented patients.  相似文献

Determinants of daily energy needs and physical activity are unknown in free-living elderly. This study examined determinants of daily total energy expenditure (TEE) and free-living physical activity in older women (n = 51; age = 67 +/- 6 yr) and men (n = 48; age = 70 +/- 7 yr) by using doubly labeled water and indirect calorimetry. Using multiple-regression analyses, we predicted TEE by using anthropometric, physiological, and physical activity indexes. Data were collected on resting metabolic rate (RMR), body composition, peak oxygen consumption (VO2 peak), leisure time activity, and plasma thyroid hormone. Data adjusted for body composition were not different between older women and men, respectively (in kcal/day): TEE, 2,306 +/- 647 vs. 2,456 +/- 666; RMR, 1,463 +/- 244 vs. 1,378 +/- 249; and physical activity energy expenditure, 612 +/- 570 vs. 832 +/- 581. In a subgroup of 70 women and men, RMR and VO2 peak explained approximately two-thirds of the variance in TEE (R2 = 0.62; standard error of the estimate = +/-348 kcal/day). Crossvalidation of this equation in the remaining 29 women and men was successful, with no difference between predicted and measured TEE (2,364 +/- 398 and 2,406 +/- 571 kcal/day, respectively). The strongest predictors of physical activity energy expenditure (P < 0.05) for women and men were VO2 peak (r = 0.43), fat-free mass (r = 0.39), and body mass (r = 0.34). In summary, RMR and VO2 peak are important independent predictors of energy requirements in the elderly. Furthermore, cardiovascular fitness and fat-free mass are moderate predictors of physical activity in free-living elderly.  相似文献

The energy expenditure and heart rate of five Shetland ponies were measured during transport and compared with the values recorded while they were at rest and walking. Secondary aims of the study were to investigate whether there was any correlation between heart rate and energy expenditure and whether different orientations affected the values to different degrees. The measurements were recorded at one-minute intervals while the ponies were at rest, walking and being transported in four different orientations, on journeys lasting 30 minutes. There were significant increases (P < 0.001) in both heart rate and energy expenditure during transport which were similar to those associated with walking, and there was a strong correlation between the two measurements. There was no conclusive evidence that orientation affected the measurements, but it appeared that rear facing transport might have had the least effect.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: It has recently been reported that total daily energy expenditure (TDE) is increased in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and it was hypothesised that these patients may have a decreased mechanical efficiency during activities. The purpose of the present study was to measure the mechanical efficiency of submaximal leg exercise, and to characterise patients with a potentially low efficiency in terms of body composition, resting energy expenditure, lung function, and symptom limited exercise performance. METHODS: Metabolic and ventilatory variables were measured breath by breath during submaximal cycle ergometry exercise performed at 50% of symptom limited achieved maximal load in 33 clinically stable patients with COPD (23 men) with forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) of 40 (12)% predicted. Net mechanical efficiency was calculated adjusting for resting energy expenditure (REE). RESULTS: Median mechanical efficiency was 15.5% and ranged from 8.5% to 22.7%. Patients with an extremely low mechanical efficiency (< 17%, n = 21) demonstrated an increased VO2/VE compared with those with a normal efficiency (median difference 4.7 ml/l, p = 0.005) during submaximal exercise. There was no difference between the groups differentiated by mechanical efficiency in blood gas tensions at rest, airflow obstruction, respiratory muscle strength, hyperinflation at rest, resting energy expenditure or body composition. There was a significant difference in total airways resistance (92% predicted, p = 0.03) between the groups differentiated by mechanical efficiency. CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that many patients with severe COPD have decreased mechanical efficiency. Furthermore, based on the results of this study it is hypothesised that an increased oxygen cost of breathing during exercise contributes to the decreased mechanical efficiency.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine energy expenditure (EE) of apparently resting, client-owned dogs with malignant or nonmalignant diseases that were recovering from anesthesia and surgery, and compare those values with values from clinically normal, apparently resting, client owned dogs. ANIMALS: 40 apparently resting, client-owned dogs that had been given general anesthesia for various elective and nonelective surgical procedures, and 30 apparently resting, clinically normal client-owned dogs used as controls. PROCEDURE: EE was determined, using an open-flow indirect calorimetry system. Each dog was evaluated before and after surgery (0, 1, 2, and 3 days after surgery, then at suture removal > 14 days later) and compared with apparently resting, clinically normal, client-owned dogs (n = 30). Parameters evaluated were rate of oxygen consumption (Vo2/kg of body weight: ml/min/kg; Vo2/kg0.75: ml/min/kg0.75), EE (EE/kg: kcal/kg/d; EE/kg0.75: kcal/kg0.75/d), and respiratory quotient. RESULTS: Surgery and anesthesia did not significantly alter any of these parameters at any time assessed in any group. The pretreatment Vo2 and EE were significantly lower in the dogs with cancer, compared with dogs of other groups. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that the EE of a restricted group of dogs that undergo anesthesia and surgery for malignant and nonmalignant conditions does not increase from baseline values or when compared with values in clinically normal, client-owned dogs. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This information may be of value when planning nutritional treatment for dogs recovering from anesthesia and surgery.  相似文献

Inactivity causes profound deleterious changes. We investigated in eight healthy men the impact of a 42-day head-down bed rest (HDBR) on energy and water metabolism and their interrelationships with body composition (BC) and catabolic and anabolic hormones. Total energy expenditure (TEE), total body water, water turnover, and metabolic water formation were assessed by the doubly labeled water method 15 days before and for the last 15 days of HDBR. Resting energy expenditure was determined by indirect calorimetry, and BC was determined by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Urinary excretion of cortisol, GH, normetanephrine, metanephrine, urea, and creatinine were measured daily. HDBR resulted in significant reductions in body weight (2%), total body water (5%), metabolic water (17%), and lean body mass (LBM; 4%), but fat mass and water turnover did not change. Segmental BC showed a decreased LBM in legs and trunk, whereas fat mass increased, no significant changes were noted in the arms. The hydration of LBM was unchanged. TEE and energy intake decreased significantly (20% and 13%), whereas resting energy expenditure was maintained. Expenditure for physical activity dropped by 39%. Subjects were in energy balance during HDBR, whereas it was negative during the control period (-1.5 MJ/day). There were decreases in urinary normetanephrine (23%) and metanephrine (23%), but urinary cortisol (28%; weeks 2 and 3), GH (75%; weeks 2-4), and urea (15%; weeks 3 and 4) increased. It was concluded that during prolonged HDBR no relevant modifications in water metabolism were triggered. BC changes occurred in the nonexercised body segments, and the reduction in TEE was due to inactivity, not to LBM loss. Moreover, body weight alone does not accurately reflect the subject's energy state, and energy balance alone could not explain the body weight loss, which involves a transient metabolic stress.  相似文献
