The aim of the present work is to determine whether a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland treating wastewater could act simultaneously as a microbial fuel cell (MFC). Specifically, and as the main variable under study, different organic loading rates were used, and the response of the system was monitored. The installation consisted of a synthetic domestic wastewater-feeding system and a pilot-scale constructed wetland for wastewater treatment, which also included coupled devices necessary to function as an MFC. The wetland worked under continuous operation for 180 d, treating three types of synthetic wastewater with increasing organic loading rates: 13.9 g COD m−2 d−1, 31.1 g COD m−2 d−1, and 61.1 g COD m−2 d−1. The COD removal efficiencies and the cell voltage generation were continuously monitored. The wetland worked simultaneously as an MFC generating electric power. Under low organic loading rates, the wastewater organic matter was completely oxidised in the lower anaerobic compartment, and there were slight aerobic conditions in the upper cathodic compartment, thus causing an electrical current. Under high organic loading rates, the organic matter could not be completely oxidised in the anodic compartment and flowed to the cathodic one, which entered into anaerobic conditions and caused the MFC to stop working. The system developed in this work offered similar cell voltage, power density, and current density values compared with the ones obtained in previous studies using photosynthetic MFCs, sediment-type MFCs, and plant-type MFCs. The light/darkness changes caused voltage fluctuations due to the photosynthetic activity of the macrophytes used (Phragmites australis), which affected the conditions in the cathodic compartment.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the efficiency of dissolved methane (D-CH4) collection by degasification from the effluent of a bench-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating synthetic wastewater. A hollow-fiber degassing membrane module was used for degasification. This module was connected to the liquid outlet of the UASB reactor. After chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of the UASB reactor became stable, D-CH4 discharged from the UASB reactor was collected. Under 35 °C and a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 h, average D-CH4 concentration could be reduced from 63 mg COD L−1 to 15 mg COD L−1; this, in turn, resulted in an increase in total methane (CH4) recovery efficiency from 89% to 97%. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of temperature and HRT of the UASB reactor on degasification efficiency. Average D-CH4 concentration was as high as 104 mg COD L−1 at 15 °C because of the higher solubility of CH4 gas in liquid; the average D-CH4 concentration was reduced to 14 mg COD L−1 by degasification. Accordingly, total CH4 recovery efficiency increased from 71% to 97% at 15 °C as a result of degasification. Moreover, degasification tended to cause an increase in particulate COD removal efficiency. The UASB reactor was operated at the same COD loading rate, but different wastewater feed rates and HRTs. Although average D-CH4 concentration in the UASB reactor was almost unchanged (ca. 70 mg COD L−1) regardless of the HRT value, the CH4 discharge rate from the UASB reactor increased because of an increase in the wastewater feed rate. Because the D-CH4 concentration could be reduced down to 12 ± 1 mg COD L−1 by degasification at an HRT of 6.7 h, the CH4 recovery rate was 1.5 times higher under degasification than under normal operation.  相似文献

A novel approach was developed for the energetic valorisation and treatment of olive mill wastewater (OMW), combining anaerobic digestion and electrochemical oxidation. The electrochemical treatment was proposed as the final step to mineralize the remaining OMW fraction from the anaerobic reactor. The electrooxidation of anaerobically digested OMW was investigated over dimensionally stable anodes (DSAs). RuO2 based anode was significantly more efficient than IrO2-type DSA, mainly for the COD removal. IrO2 based anode promoted a selective oxidation of phenols and colour removal. For instance, after an electrolysis charge of 10.4 × 104 C L−1, COD removals of 14 and 99%, phenols removals of 91 and 100% and colour removals of 85 and 100% were obtained for IrO2 and RuO2 DSAs-type, respectively. The electrochemical post-treatment was effectively performed without using a supporting electrolyte and in the presence of the solids that remained from the anaerobic process. The achievement of the required effluent quality for sewer systems disposal depends on the operating conditions of the anaerobic process. Consequently, special care must be taken with the chloride and nitrogen levels that may surpass the legal discharge limits. The electrochemical oxidation over RuO2 based DSA is an appropriate second-step treatment for OMW disposal, after the recovery of its energetic potential.  相似文献

Anaerobic wastewater treatment plants discharge dissolved methane, which is usually not recovered. To prevent emission of methane, which is a greenhouse gas, we utilized an encapsulated down-flow hanging sponge reactor as a post-treatment to biologically oxidize dissolved methane. Within 3 weeks after reactor start-up, methane removal efficiency of up to 95% was achieved with a methane removal rate of 0.8 kg COD m−3 day−1 at an HRT of 2 h. After increasing the methane-loading rate, the maximum methane removal rate reached 2.2 kg COD m−3 day−1 at an HRT of 0.5 h. On the other hand, only about 10% of influent ammonium was oxidized to nitrate during the first period, but as airflow was increased to 2.5 L day−1, nitrification efficiency increased to approximately 70%. However, the ammonia oxidation rate then decreased with an increase in the methane-loading rate. These results indicate that methane oxidation occurred preferentially over ammonium oxidation in the reactor. Cloning of the 16S rRNA and pmoA genes as well as phylogenetic and T-RFLP analyses revealed that type I methanotrophs were the dominant methane oxidizers, whereas type II methanotrophs were detected only in minor portion of the reactor.  相似文献

This work proposes an efficient combined treatment for the decontamination of a pesticide-containing wastewater resulting from phytopharmaceutical plastic containers washing, presenting a moderate organic load (COD = 1662-1960 mg O2 L−1; DOC = 513-696 mg C L−1), with a high biodegradable organic carbon fraction (81%; BOD5 = 1350-1600 mg O2 L−1) and a remaining recalcitrant organic carbon mainly due to pesticides. Nineteen pesticides were quantified by LC-MS/MS at concentrations between 0.02 and 45 mg L−1 (14-19% of DOC). The decontamination strategy involved a sequential three-step treatment: (a) biological oxidation process, leading to almost complete removal of the biodegradable organic carbon fraction; (b) solar photo-Fenton process using CPCs, enhancing the bio-treated wastewater biodegradability, mainly due to pesticides degradation into low-molecular-weight carboxylate anions; (c) and a final polishing step to remove the residual biodegradable organic carbon, using a biological oxidation process. Treatment performance was evaluated in terms of mineralization degree (DOC), pesticides content (LC-MS/MS), inorganic ions and low-molecular-weight carboxylate anions (IC) concentrations. The estimated phototreatment energy necessary to reach a biodegradable wastewater, considering pesticides and low-molecular-weight carboxylate anions concentrations, Zahn-Wellens test and BOD5/COD ratio, was only 2.3 kJUV L−1 (45 min of photo-Fenton at a constant solar UV power of 30 W m−2), consuming 16 mM of H2O2, which pointed to 52% mineralization and an abatement higher than 86% for 18 pesticides. The biological oxidation/solar photo-Fenton/biological oxidation treatment system achieved pesticide removals below the respective detection limits and 79% mineralization, leading to a COD value lower than 150 mg O2 L−1, which is in agreement with Portuguese discharge limits regarding water bodies.  相似文献

The feasibility of low-temperature (7 °C) anaerobic digestion for the treatment of a trichloroethylene (TCE) contaminated wastewater was investigated. Two expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) bioreactors (R1 and R2) were employed for the mineralisation of a synthetic volatile fatty acid based wastewater at an initial organic loading rate (OLR) of 3 kg COD m−3 d−1, and an operating temperature of 15 °C. Successive reductions in OLR to 0.75 kg COD m−3 d−1, and operational temperature to 7 °C, resulted in stable bioreactor operation by day 417, with COD removal efficiency and biogas CH4 content ≥74%, for both bioreactors. Subsequently, the influent to R1 was supplemented with increasing concentrations (10, 20, 30 mg l−1) of TCE, while R2 acted as a control. At an influent TCE concentration of 30 mg l−1, although phase average TCE removal rates of 79% were recorded, a sustained decrease in R1 performance was observed, with COD removal of 6%, and % biogas CH4 of 3% recorded on days 595 and 607, respectively. Specific methanogenic activity (SMA) assays identified a general shift from acetate- to hydrogen-mediated methanogenesis in both R1 and R2 biomass, while toxicity assays confirmed an increased sensitivity of the acetoclastic community in R1 to TCE and dichloroethylene (DCE), which contributed to acetate accumulation. Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) analysis of the methanogenic community confirmed the dominance of hydrogenotrophic methanogens in both R1 and R2, representing 71-89% of the total methanogenic population, however acetoclastic Methanosaeta were the dominant organisms, based on 16S rRNA gene clone library analysis of reactor biomass. The greatest change in the bacterial community, as demonstrated by UPGMA analysis of DGGE banding profiles, was observed in R1 biomass between days 417 and 609, although 88% similarity was retained between these sampling points.  相似文献

The viability of the electro-oxidation technology provided with boron doped diamond (BDD) electrodes for the treatment and reuse of the seawater used in a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) was evaluated in this work. The influence of the applied current density (5-50 A m−2) in the removal of Total Ammonia Nitrogen (TAN), nitrite and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was analyzed observing that complete TAN removal together with important reductions of the other considered contaminants could be achieved, thus meeting the requirements for reuse of seawater in RAS systems.TAN removal, mainly due to an indirect oxidation mechanism was described by a second order kinetics while COD and nitrite removal followed zero-th order kinetics. The values of the kinetic constants for the anodic oxidation of each compound were obtained as a function of the applied current density (kTAN = 7.86 × 10−5·exp(6.30 × 10−2 J); k2NO = 3.43 × 10−2 J; kCOD = 1.35 × 10−2 J). The formation of free chlorine and oxidation by-products, i.e., trihalomethanes (THMs) was followed along the electro-oxidation process. Although a maximum concentration of 1.7 mg l−1 of total trihalomethanes was detected an integrated process combining electrochemical oxidation in order to eliminate TAN, nitrite and COD and adsorption onto activated carbon to remove the residual chlorine and THMs is proposed, as an efficient alternative to treat and reuse the seawater in fish culture systems. Finally, the energy consumption of the treatment has been evaluated.  相似文献

Biological wastewater treatment by aerobic granular sludge biofilms offers the possibility to combine carbon (COD), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removal in a single reactor. Since denitrification can be affected by suboptimal dissolved oxygen concentrations (DO) and limited availability of COD, different aeration strategies and COD loads were tested to improve N- and P-removal in granular sludge systems. Aeration strategies promoting alternating nitrification and denitrification (AND) were studied to improve reactor efficiencies in comparison with more classical simultaneous nitrification–denitrification (SND) strategies. With nutrient loading rates of 1.6 gCOD L−1 d−1, 0.2 gN L−1 d−1, and 0.08 gP L−1 d−1, and SND aeration strategies, N-removal was limited to 62.3 ± 3.4%. Higher COD loads markedly improved N-removal showing that denitrification was limited by COD. AND strategies were more efficient than SND strategies. Alternating high and low DO phases during the aeration phase increased N-removal to 71.2 ± 5.6% with a COD loading rate of 1.6 gCOD L−1 d−1. Periods of low DO were presumably favorable to denitrifying P-removal saving COD necessary for heterotrophic N-removal. Intermittent aeration with anoxic periods without mixing between the aeration pulses was even more favorable to N-removal, resulting in 78.3 ± 2.9% N-removal with the lowest COD loading rate tested. P-removal was under all tested conditions between 88 and 98%, and was negatively correlated with the concentration of nitrite and nitrate in the effluent (r = −0.74, p < 0.01). With low COD loading rates, important emissions of undesired N2O gas were observed and a total of 7–9% of N left the reactor as N2O. However, N2O emissions significantly decreased with higher COD loads under AND conditions.  相似文献

Bacteria fate and transport within constructed wetlands must be understood if engineered wetlands are to become a reliable form of wastewater treatment. This study investigated the relative importance of microbial treatment mechanisms in constructed wetlands treating both domestic and agricultural wastewater. Escherichia coli (E. coli) inactivation, adsorption, and settling rates were measured in the lab within two types of wastewater (dairy wastewater lagoon effluent and domestic septic tank effluent). In situ E. coli inactivation was also measured within a domestic wastewater treatment wetland and the adsorption of E. coli was also measured within the wetland effluent.Inactivation of E. coli appears to be the most significant contributor to E. coli removal within the wastewaters and wetland environments examined in this study. E. coli survived longer within the dairy wastewater (DW) compared to the domestic wastewater treatment wetland water (WW). First order rate constants for E. coli inactivation within the WW in the lab ranged from 0.09 day−1 (d−1) at 7.6 °C to 0.18 d−1 at 22.8 °C. The average in situ rate constant observed within the domestic wetland ranged from 0.02 d−1 to 0.03 d−1 at an average water temperature of 17 °C. First order rate constants for E. coli inactivation within the DW ranged from 0.01 d−1 at 7.7 °C to 0.04 d−1 at 24.6 °C. Calculated distribution coefficients (Kd) were 19,000 mL g−1, 324,000 mL g−1, and 293 mL g−1 for E. coli with domestic septic tank effluent (STE), treated wetland effluent (WLE), and DW, respectively. Approximately 50%, 20%, and 90% of E. coli were “free floating” or associated with particles <5 μm in size within the STE, WLE, and DW respectively. Although 10-50% of E. coli were found to associate with particles >5 μm within both the STE and DW, settling did not appear to contribute to E. coli removal within sedimentation experiments, indicating that the particles the bacteria were associated with had very small settling velocities. The results of this study highlight the importance of wastewater characterization when designing a treatment wetland system for bacterial removal. This study illustrated the level of variability in E. coli removal processes that can be observed within different wastewater, and wetland environments.  相似文献

The feasibility of long-term (>3 years), low-temperature (4-15 °C) and anaerobic bioreactor operation, for the treatment of acidified wastewater, was investigated. A hybrid, expanded granular sludge bed-anaerobic filter bioreactor was seeded with a mesophilic inoculum and employed for the mineralization of moderate-strength (3.75-10 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD) m−3) volatile fatty acid-based wastewaters at 4-15 °C. Bioprocess performance was assessed in terms of COD removal efficiency (CODRE), methane biogas concentration, and yield, and biomass retention. Batch specific methanogenic activity assays were performed to physiologically characterise reactor biomass.Despite transient disimprovements, CODRE and methane biogas concentrations exceeded 80% and 65%, respectively, at an applied organic loading rate (OLR) of 10 kg COD m−3 d−1 between 9.5 and 15 °C (sludge loading rate (SLR), 0.6 kg COD kg[VSS]−1 d−1). Over 50% of the granular sludge bed was lost to disintegration during operation at 9.5 °C, warranting a reduction in the applied OLR to 3.75-5 kg COD m−3 d−1 (SLR, c. 0.4-0.5 kg COD kg[VSS]−1 d−1). From that point forward, remarkably stable and efficient performance was observed during operation at 4-10 °C, with respect to CODRE (≥82%), methane biogas concentration (>70%) and methane yields (>4 lMethane d−1), suggesting the adaptation of our mesophilic inoculum to psychrophilic operating conditions.Physiological activity assays indicated the development of psychroactive syntrophic and methanogenic populations, including the emergence of putatively psychrophilic propionate-oxidising and hydrogenotrophic methanogenic activity. The data suggest that mesophilic inocula can physiologically adapt to sub-optimal operational temperatures: treatment efficiencies and sludge loading rates at 4 °C (day, 1243) were comparable to those achieved at 15 °C (day 0). Furthermore, long-term, low-temperature bioreactor operation may act as a selective enrichment for psychrophilic methanogenic activity from mesophilic inocula. The observed efficient and stable bioprocess performance highlights the potential for long-term, low-temperature bioreactor operation.  相似文献

Strategies are proposed for the anaerobic treatment of lipid and phenolic-rich effluents, specifically the raw olive mill wastewater (OMW). Two reactors were operated under OMW influent concentrations from 5 to 48 g COD L−1 and Hydraulic Retention Time between 10 and 5 days. An intermittent feeding was applied whenever the reactors showed a severe decay in the methane yield. This strategy improved the mineralization of oleate and palmitate, which were the main accumulated Long-Chain Fatty Acids (LCFA), and also promoted the removal of resilient phenolic compounds, reaching remarkable removal efficiencies of 60% and 81% for two parallel reactors at the end of a feed-less period. A maximum biogas production of 1.4 m3 m−3 d−1 at an Organic Loading Rate of 4.8 kg COD m−3 d−1 was obtained. Patterns of individual LCFA oxidation during the OMW anaerobic digestion are presented and discussed for the first time. The supplementation of a nitrogen source boosted immediately the methane yield from 21 and 18 to 76 and 93% in both reactors. The typical problems of sludge flotation and washout during the anaerobic treatment of this oily wastewater were overcome by biomass retention, according to the Inverted Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (IASB) reactor concepts. This work demonstrates that it is possible to avoid a previous detoxification step by implementing adequate operational strategies to the anaerobic treatment of OMW.  相似文献

Soil aquifer treatment of artificial wastewater under saturated conditions   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A 2000 mm long saturated laboratory soil column was used to simulate soil aquifer treatment under saturated conditions to assess the removal of chemical and biochemical oxygen demand (COD and BOD), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen and phosphate, using high strength artificial wastewater. The removal rates were determined under a combination of constant hydraulic loading rates (HLR) and variable COD concentrations as well as variable HLR under a constant COD. Within the range of COD concentrations considered (42 mg L−1-135 mg L−1) it was found that at fixed hydraulic loading rate, a decrease in the influent concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen and phosphate improved their removal efficiencies. At the high COD concentrations applied residence times influenced the redox conditions in the soil column. Long residence times were detrimental to the removal process for COD, BOD and DOC as anoxic processes and sulphate reduction played an important role as electron acceptors. It was found that total COD mass loading within the range of 911 mg d−1-1780 mg d−1 applied as low COD wastewater infiltrated coupled with short residence times would provide better effluent quality than the same mass applied as a COD with higher concentration at long residence times. The opposite was true for organic nitrogen where relatively high concentrations coupled with long residence time gave better removal efficiency.  相似文献

During membrane treatment of secondary effluent from wastewater treatment plants, a reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) containing trace organic contaminants is generated. As the latter are of concern, effective and economic treatment methods are required. Here, we investigated electrochemical oxidation of ROC using Ti/Ru0.7Ir0.3O2 electrodes, focussing on the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), specific ultra-violet absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA254), and 28 pharmaceuticals and pesticides frequently encountered in secondary treated effluents. The experiments were conducted in a continuously fed reactor at current densities (J) ranging from 1 to 250 A m−2 anode, and a batch reactor at J = 250 A m−2. Higher mineralization efficiency was observed during batch oxidation (e.g. 25.1 ± 2.7% DOC removal vs 0% removal in the continuous reactor after applying specific electrical charge, Q = 437.0 A h m−3 ROC), indicating that DOC removal is depending on indirect oxidation by electrogenerated oxidants that accumulate in the bulk liquid. An initial increase and subsequent slow decrease in SUVA254 during batch mode suggests the introduction of auxochrome substituents (e.g. -Cl, NH2Cl, -Br, and -OH) into the aromatic compounds. Contrarily, in the continuous reactor ring-cleaving oxidation products were generated, and SUVA254 removal correlated with applied charge. Furthermore, 20 of the target pharmaceuticals and pesticides completely disappeared in both the continuous and batch experiments when applying J ≥ 150 A m−2 (i.e. Q ≥ 461.5 A h m−3) and 437.0 A h m−3 (J = 250 A m−2), respectively. Compounds that were more persistent during continuous oxidation were characterized by the presence of electrophilic groups on the aromatic ring (e.g. triclopyr) or by the absence of stronger nucleophilic substituents (e.g. ibuprofen). These pollutants were oxidized when applying higher specific electrical charge in batch mode (i.e. 1.45 kA h m−3 ROC). However, baseline toxicity as determined by Vibrio fischeri bioluminescence inhibition tests (Microtox) was increasing with higher applied charge during batch and continuous oxidation, indicating the formation of toxic oxidation products, possibly chlorinated and brominated organic compounds.  相似文献

Greywater treatment by UVC/H2O2 was investigated with regard to the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD). A COD reduction from 225 to 30 mg l−1 (overall removal of 87%) was achieved after settling overnight and subsequent irradiation for 3 h with 10 mM H2O2. Most of the contaminants were removed by oxidation since only 13% COD was removed by settlement. The removal of COD in the greywater followed a second-order kinetic equation, r = 0.0637[COD][H2O2], up to 10 mM H2O2. A slightly enhanced COD removal was observed at the initial pH of 10 compared with pH 3 and 7. This was attributed to the dissociation of H2O2 to O2H. The treatment was not affected by total concentration of carbonate (cT) of at least 3 mM, above which operation between pH 3 and 5 was essential. The initial biodegradability of the settled greywater (as BOD5:COD) was 0.22. After 2 h UVC/H2O2 treatment, a higher proportion of the residual contaminants was biodegradable (BOD5:COD = 0.41) which indicated its potential as a pre-treatment for a biological process.  相似文献

Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes have been successfully applied around the world for wastewater reuse applications. However, RO is a physical separation process, and besides the clean water stream (permeate) a reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) is produced, usually representing 15-25% of the feed water flow and containing the organic and inorganic contaminants at higher concentrations. In this study, electrochemical oxidation was investigated for the treatment of ROC generated during the reclamation of municipal wastewater effluent. Using laboratory-scale two-compartment electrochemical systems, five electrode materials (i.e. titanium coated with IrO2-Ta2O5, RuO2-IrO2, Pt-IrO2, PbO2, and SnO2-Sb) were tested as anodes in batch mode experiments, using ROC from an advanced water treatment plant. The best oxidation performance was observed for Ti/Pt-IrO2 anodes, followed by the Ti/SnO2-Sb and Ti/PbO2 anodes. The effectiveness of the treatment appears to correlate with the formation of oxidants such as active chlorine (i.e. Cl2/HClO/ClO). As a result, electro-generated chlorine led to the abundant formation of harmful by-products such as trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), particularly at Ti/SnO2-Sb and Ti/Pt-IrO2 anodes. The highest concentration of total HAAs (i.e. 2.7 mg L−1) was measured for the Ti/SnO2-Sb electrode, after 0.55 Ah L−1 of supplied specific electrical charge. Irrespective of the used material, electrochemical oxidation of ROC needs to be complemented by a polishing treatment to alleviate the release of halogenated by-products.  相似文献

The treatment efficiency and membrane performance of a granular and suspended growth anaerobic membrane bioreactor (G-AnMBR and AnMBR respectively) were compared and evaluated. Both anaerobic MBRs were operated in parallel during 250 days with low strength wastewater and under UK weather conditions. Both systems presented COD and BOD removal efficiencies of 80–95% and >90% respectively. Effluent BOD remained between 5 and 15 mgBOD L−1 through the experimental period while effluent COD increased from 25 mg L−1 to 75 mg L−1 as temperature decreased from 25 °C to 10 °C respectively indicating the production of non biodegradable organics at lower temperatures. Although similar levels of low molecular weight organics were present in the sludge supernatant, recycling of the mixed liquor from the membrane tank to the bioreactor at a low upflow velocity enhanced interception of solids in the sludge bed of the G-AnMBR limiting the solid and colloidal load to the membrane as compared to the suspended system. Results from flux step test showed that critical flux increased from 4 to 13 L m−2 h−1 and from 3 to 5 L m−2 h−1 with gas sparging intensities varying from 0.007 m s−1 to 0.041. Additional long term trials in which the effect of gas sparging rate and backwashing efficiency were assessed confirmed the lower fouling propensity of the G-AnMBR.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of the COD/SO42− ratio (4 and 1) and the sulfide concentration on the performance of thermophilic (55 °C) acidifying (pH 6) upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactors fed with sucrose at an organic loading rate of 4.5 g COD lreactor−1 day−1. Sulfate reduction efficiencies amounted to 65% and 25-35% for the COD/SO42− ratios of 4 and 1, respectively. Acidification was complete at all the tested conditions and the electron flow was similar at the two COD/SO42− ratios applied. The stepwise decrease of the sulfide concentrations in the reactors with a COD/SO42− ratio of 1 by N2 stripping caused an immediate stepwise increase in the sulfate reduction efficiencies, indicating a reversible inhibition by sulfide. The degree of reversibility was, however, affected by the growth conditions of the sludge. Acidifying sludge pre-grown at pH 6, at a COD/SO42− ratio of 9 and exposed for 150 days to 115 mg l−1 sulfide, showed a slower recovery from the sulfide inhibition than a freshly harvested sludge from a full scale treatment plant (pH 7 and COD/SO42−=9.5) exposed for a 70 days to 200 mg l−1 sulfide. In the latter case, the decrease of the sulfide concentration from 200 to 45 mg l−1 (35 mg l−1 undissociated sulfide) by N2 stripping caused an immediate increase of the sulfate reduction efficiency from 35% to 96%.  相似文献

The electrochemical treatment of olive mill wastewaters (OMW) over boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes was investigated. A factorial design methodology was implemented to evaluate the statistically important operating parameters, amongst initial COD load (1000-5000 mg/L), treatment time (1-4 h), current intensity (10-20 A), initial pH (4-6) and the use of 500 mg/L H2O2 as an additional oxidant, on treatment efficiency; the latter was assessed in terms of COD, phenols, aromatics and color removal. Of the five parameters tested, the first two had a considerable effect on COD removal. Hence, analysis was repeated at more intense conditions, i.e. initial COD values up to 10,000 mg/L and reaction times up to 7 h and a simple model was developed and validated to predict COD evolution profiles. The model suggests that the rate of COD degradation is zero order regarding its concentration and agrees well with an electrochemical model for the anodic oxidation of organics over BDD developed elsewhere. The treatability of the undiluted effluent (40,000 mg/L COD) was tested at 20 A for 15 h yielding 19% COD and 36% phenols' removal respectively with a specific energy consumption of 96 kW h/kg COD removed. Aerobic biodegradability and ecotoxicity assays were also performed to assess the respective effects of electrochemical treatment.  相似文献

Dairy soiled water (DSW) is produced on dairy farms through the washing-down of milking parlours and holding areas, and is generally applied to land. However, there is a risk of nutrient loss to surface and ground waters from land application. The aim of this study was to use aerobic woodchip filters to remove organic matter, suspended solids (SS) and nutrients from DSW. This novel treatment method would allow the re-use of the final effluent from the woodchip filters to wash down yards, thereby reducing water usage and environmental risks associated with land spreading. Three replicate 100 m2 farm-scale woodchip filters, each 1 m deep, were constructed and operated to treat DSW from 300 cows over an 11-month study duration. The filters were loaded at a hydraulic loading rate of 30 L m−2 d−1, applied in four doses through a network of pipes on the filter surface. Average influent concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD), SS and total nitrogen (TN) of 5750 ± 1441 mg L−1, 602 ± 303 mg L−1 and 357 ± 100 mg L−1, respectively, were reduced by 66, 86 and 57% in the filters. Effluent nutrient concentrations remained relatively stable over the study period, indicating the effectiveness of the filter despite increasing and/or fluctuating influent concentrations. Woodchip filters are a low cost, minimal maintenance treatment system, using a renewable resource that can be easily integrated into existing farm infrastructure.  相似文献

Efficient biological nitrogen removal from pharmaceutical wastewater has been focused recently. The present study dealt with the treatment of colistin sulfate and kitasamycin manufacturing wastewater through anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX). The biotoxicity assay on luminescent bacterium Photobacterium phosphoreum (T3 mutation) showed that the pharmaceutical wastewater imparted severe toxicity with a relative luminosity of 3.46% ± 0.45%. During long-term operation, the cumulative toxicity from toxic pollutants in wastewater resulted in the performance collapse of conventional ANAMMOX process. A novel ANAMMOX process with sequential biocatalyst (ANAMMOX granules) addition (SBA-ANAMMOX process) was developed by combining high-rate ANAMMOX reactor with sequential biocatalyst addition (SBA). At biocatalyst addition rate of 0.025 g VSS (L wastewater)−1 day−1, the nitrogen removal rate of the process reached up to 9.4 kg N m−3 day−1 in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. The effluent ammonium concentration was lower than 50 mg N L−1, which met the Discharge Standard of Water Pollutants for Pharmaceutical Industry in China (GB 21903-2008). The application of SBA-ANAMMOX process in refractory ammonium-rich wastewater is promising.  相似文献
