广州夏季高温高湿,基于广州城乡老年人的室内环境差异,通过问卷调查了解了116 名广州城乡老年人的室内居住环境, 并对5 户典型城市及5 户典型农村65 岁以上居民住宅的夏季室内环境进行了对比实测研究,测量每户住宅的客厅,卧室和卫 生间的温度、相对湿度及CO2、CO、PM2.5、挥发性有机物浓度。研究表明,广州农村住户夏季主要使用风扇降温,仅有约三 分之一住户同时使用空调,而城市住户均使用空调,大部分住户同时使用风扇;广州农村住户夏季室内平均空气温度比城市住 户低0.8 ℃,平均相对湿度比城市住户高21.6%;通风较差的住户室内CO2 浓度相对较高,所有实测城市及农村住户的CO、 PM2.5 的浓度都低于国家标准规定的极限值;广州城市住户的室内外PM2.5 浓度及室内总挥发性有机物的浓度总体高于农村住户。 广州农村老年人住宅应加强防潮处理,城市老年人住宅应加强通风换气,优选环保家具。  相似文献

Burning solid fuels to fulfill daily household energy needs results in chronic exposure to household air pollution (HAP), which is among the world's greatest health risks. This paper presents the results of a cross‐sectional study of cookstove usage, fuel consumption, and indoor PM2.5 concentrations in rural and urban Honduran homes cooking with the Envirofit HM‐5000 metal plancha stove (n = 32) as compared to control households using baseline cooking technologies (n = 33). Temperature‐based stove usage measurements showed high HM‐5000 acceptance, with significant displacement of the traditional cookstoves at both the urban (99%, P < .05) and rural study sites (75%, P < .05). However, longer‐term usage data collected in peri‐urban households showed that participants cooked on the HM‐5000 more frequently during the 3‐day monitoring period than during the following 3 weeks. Average indoor PM2.5 was 66% lower in HM‐5000 households as compared to control households (P < .05). Lower indoor PM2.5 concentrations observed in participant homes as compared to control households, supported by high usage and traditional stove displacement, suggest the potential for the HM‐5000 to yield health improvements in adopting Honduran households.  相似文献

First in the USA and then in many other countries, scholarship on environmental inequality has sought to shed light on the unequal environmental conditions borne by poor people and ethnic minorities, and to challenge public policies and their unjust impacts on those target groups. Housing quality, especially the indoor characteristics of homes, offers an innovative perspective in this field of research. In previous research on environmental inequality in the Walloon context, housing quality has been proven to be a major determinant of quality of life and environmental well-being. This paper analyses housing quality through a twofold approach: indoor characteristics on the one hand, and outdoor subjective and objective externalities on the other. It reveals the disparities between the most deprived and the wealthiest segments of the population. The evidence for this study is based on a housing quality survey carried out in 2012 and 2013 on 6018 households in Wallonia (Belgium). The key findings are that poor people are found to live in housing of lower quality, in densely populated neighbourhoods and those with mixed use, with compensating amenities provided at the local level. Moreover, consistent with environmental inequality scholarship, deprived households are found to bear the burden of environmental degradation outside the home. People live in areas with poorer air quality, but are found to benefit from greater access to green spaces. The results of the survey reveal an interesting point concerning the environmental inequality literature; the interior features of housing are found to differ more widely between deprived and wealthier people than the surrounding environment does.  相似文献

As part of a larger research project which examined the concept of healthy houses in Canada, this study provides a preliminary assessment of potential segments of Canadian householders based on their attitudes about two indoor environmental quality (IEQ) attributes (indoor air quality and lighting). Additionally, concerns about energy efficiency in the home are also addressed. A nationwide survey of households (n = 784) was conducted to search for indications of segments of Canadian householders that value their homes’ indoor environments and energy efficiency, thus addressing issues of consumer interest for healthier homes. Similar groups of householders were derived based on their levels of agreement with a variety of statements regarding some indoor environmental quality attributes and energy efficiency. The specific goals were: (1) to identify segments within Canada which indicate the presence of potential consumers of healthier houses on a broader scale; and (2) to characterize these groups using attitudinal and demographic variables. Segmentation in this study was conducted using a k-means cluster analysis, with the clusters being characterized using demographic and attitudinal information. Results indicated that there is indeed an identifiable segment within the Canadian housing sector for products and services associated with the healthy housing concept. Although housing and policy recommendations are not explicitly made, both private and public stakeholders in the Canadian housing sector could benefit by taking note of these findings.

Inuit infants have extremely high rates of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI), but the causes for this are unclear. The aims of this study were to assess, in young Inuit children in Baffin Region, Nunavut, the feasibility of an epidemiologic study of the association between indoor air quality (IAQ) and respiratory health; to obtain data on IAQ in their housing; and to identify and classify risk factors for LRTI. Twenty houses in Cape Dorset, Nunavut with children below 2 years of age, were evaluated using a structured housing inspection and measurement of IAQ parameters, and a respiratory health questionnaire was administered. Twenty-five percent of the children had, at some time, been hospitalized for chest illness. Houses were very small, and had a median of six occupants per house. Forty-one percent of the houses had a calculated natural air change rate <0.35 air changes per hour. NO(2) concentrations were within the acceptable range. Smokers were present in at least 90% of the households, and nicotine concentrations exceeded 1.5 microg/m(3) in 25% of the dwellings. Particulates were found to be correlated closely with nicotine but not with NO(2) concentrations, suggesting that their main source was cigarette smoking rather than leakage from furnaces. Mattress fungal levels were markedly increased, although building fungal concentrations were low. Dust-mites were virtually non-existent. Potential risk factors related to IAQ for viral LRTI in Inuit infants were observed in this study, including reduced air exchange and environmental tobacco smoke exposure. Severe lower respiratory tract infection is common in Inuit infants. We found reduced air change rates and high occupancy levels in houses in Cape Dorset, which may increase the risk of respiratory infections. This suggests the measures to promote better ventilation or more housing may be beneficial. Further health benefits may be obtained by reducing bed sharing by infants and greater turnover of mattresses, which were found to have high levels of fungi.  相似文献

Residents of low-income multifamily housing can have elevated exposures to multiple environmental pollutants known to influence asthma. Simulation models can characterize the health implications of changing indoor concentrations, but quantifying the influence of interventions on concentrations is challenging given complex airflow and source characteristics. In this study, we simulated concentrations in a prototype multifamily building using CONTAM, a multizone airflow and contaminant transport program. Contaminants modeled included PM(2.5) and NO(2) , and parameters included stove use, presence and operability of exhaust fans, smoking, unit level, and building leakiness. We developed regression models to explain variability in CONTAM outputs for individual sources, in a manner that could be utilized in simulation modeling of health outcomes. To evaluate our models, we generated a database of 1000 simulated households with characteristics consistent with Boston public housing developments and residents and compared the predicted levels of NO(2) and PM(2.5) and their correlates with the literature. Our analyses demonstrated that CONTAM outputs could be readily explained by available parameters (R(2) between 0.89 and 0.98 across models), but that one-compartment box models would mischaracterize concentrations and source contributions. Our study quantifies the key drivers for indoor concentrations in multifamily housing and helps to identify opportunities for interventions. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Many low-income urban asthmatics live in multifamily housing that may be amenable to ventilation-related interventions such as weatherization or air sealing, wall and ceiling hole repairs, and exhaust fan installation or repair, but such interventions must be designed carefully given their cost and their offsetting effects on energy savings as well as indoor and outdoor pollutants. We developed models to take into account the complex behavior of airflow patterns in multifamily buildings, which can be used to identify and evaluate environmental and non-environmental interventions targeting indoor air pollutants which can trigger asthma exacerbations.  相似文献

A liquid desiccant based independent humidity control (IHC) air-conditioning system driven by heat pumps is presented in this paper. The system consists of a liquid desiccant fresh air processor and a high-temperature chilled water system. The operating principles of the fresh air processor and the whole system are presented in detail. Based on the in situ system installed in an ecological building of Shanghai Research Institute of Building Sciences (SRIBS), a performance investigation was performed in summer, 2007. The measurement results show that (1) the indoor temperature and humidity both are in the specified range; (2) the supply water temperature of the high-temperature refrigerator is higher than the corresponding indoor air dew point temperature, so no condensed water would be formed on the fan-coil unit (FCU) surface; and (3) the average coefficients of performances (COPs) of the fresh air processor and the high-temperature refrigerator are 6.24 and 4.38, respectively, and the average COP of the whole IHC system is 5.28.  相似文献

Housing has long been thought to play a significant role in population exposure to environmental hazards such as high temperatures and air pollution.However,there is sparse data describing how housing may modify heat and air pollution exposure such that housing's role in poor health and mortality from these hazards may be estimated.This paper describes the development of individual-address level indoor overheating and air pollution risk modifiers for Great Britain,for use alongside historical weather,outdoor air pollution,population socio-economic data,and mortality data in a large-scale epidemiological investigation.A geographically-referenced housing stock database was developed using the Homes Energy Efficiency Database(HEED)and the English Housing Survey(EHS).Simulations of unique combinations of building,fabric,occupation,and environment were run using a modelling framework developed for Energy Plus8.0,estimating indoor temperature metrics,indoor/outdoor ratio of pollution from outdoor sources,and indoor air pollution from multiple indoor sources.Results were compiled,matched back to individual properties in HEED,and mapped using Geographical Information Systems(GIS).Results indicate urban areas had higher numbers of buildings prone to overheating,reduced levels indoor air pollution from outdoor sources,and higher air pollution from indoor sources relative to rural areas,driven largely by variations in building types.The results provide the first national-scale quantitative estimate of heat and indoor air pollution modification by dwellings,aggregated at levels suitable for inclusion in health analysis.  相似文献

The potential levels of exposure to indoor overheating in an urban environment are assessed for vulnerable social housing residents. Particular focus is given to the synergistic effects between summertime ventilation behaviour, indoor temperature and air pollutant concentration in relation to energy retrofit and climate change. Three different types of social housing are investigated (1900s’ low-rise, 1950s’ mid-rise and 1960s’ high-rise). The case study dwellings are located in Central London and occupied by vulnerable individuals (elderly and/or people suffering from ill-health or mobility impairment). Indoor temperature monitoring suggests that occupants are already exposed to some degree of overheating; the highest levels of overheating occur in 1960s’ high-rise tower blocks. The thermal and airflow performance simulation of a mid-floor flat in the 1960s’ block under the current and projected future climate indicates that improved natural ventilation strategies may reduce overheating risk to a certain extent, with night cooling and shading being slightly more effective than all-day rapid ventilation. However, their potential may be limited in future due to high external temperatures and the undesired ingress of outdoor pollutants. This highlights the need for the development of combined strategies aiming to achieve both indoor thermal comfort and air quality.  相似文献

Solid fuel burning cookstoves are a major source of household air pollution (HAP) and a significant environmental health risk in Sri Lanka. We report results of the first field study in Sri Lanka to include direct measurements of both real‐time indoor concentrations and personal exposures of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in households using the two most common stove types in Sri Lanka. A purposive sample of 53 households was selected in the rural community of Kopiwatta in central Sri Lanka, roughly balanced for stove type (traditional or improved ‘Anagi’) and ventilation (chimney present or absent). At each household, 48‐h continuous real‐time measurements of indoor kitchen PM2.5 and personal (primary cook) PM2.5 concentrations were measured using the RTI MicroPEM? personal exposure monitor. Questionnaires were used to collect data related to household demographics, characteristics, and self‐reported health symptoms. All primary cooks were female and of an average age of 47 years, with 66% having completed primary education. Median income was slightly over half the national median monthly income. Use of Anagi stoves was positively associated with a higher education level of the primary cook (P = 0.026), although not associated with household income (P = 0.18). The MicroPEM monitors were well‐received by participants, and this study's valid data capture rate exceeded 97%. Participant wearing compliance during waking hours was on average 87.2% on Day 1 and 83.3% on Day 2. Periods of non‐compliance occurred solely during non‐cooking times. The measured median 48‐h average indoor PM2.5 concentration for households with Anagi stoves was 64 μg/m3 if a chimney was present and 181 μg/m3 if not. For households using traditional stoves, these values were 70 μg/m3 if a chimney was present and 371 μg/m3 if not. Overall, measured indoor PM2.5 concentrations ranged from a minimum of 33 μg/m3 to a maximum of 940 μg/m3, while personal exposure concentrations ranged from 34 to 522 μg/m3. Linear mixed effects modeling of the dependence of indoor concentrations on stove type and presence or absence of chimney showed a significant chimney effect (65% reduction; P < 0.001) and an almost significant stove effect (24% reduction; P = 0.054). Primary cooks in households without chimneys were exposed to substantially higher levels of HAP than those in households with chimneys, while exposures in households with traditional stoves were moderately higher than those with improved Anagi stoves. As expected, simultaneously measuring both indoor concentrations and personal exposure levels indicate significant exposure misclassification bias will likely result from the use of a stationary monitor as a proxy for personal exposure. While personal exposure monitoring is more complex and expensive than deploying simple stationary devices, the value an active personal PM monitor like the MicroPEM adds to an exposure study should be considered in future study designs.  相似文献

Abstract

Residential energy efficiency interventions are complex social and construction programmes that may benefit health, yet the interactions between the material improvements, health and health-related outcomes, and householder responses are not well understood. While indoor winter warmth and householder satisfaction have been identified as the key mediators for physiological, mental and social health outcomes, this paper explores how programme contexts may have influenced the outcomes. This review revealed that common target populations were low income households, children and the elderly. The review found that people’s expectations and culturally constructed heating practices influenced indoor temperatures and householder satisfaction. Very deprived households were still affected by financial constraints despite the intervention measures. Excessive ventilation and limited technical mastery counteracted the beneficial effects of the intervention measures. Poor workmanship and ineffective handover undermined energy consumption objectives and led to householder dissatisfaction. Effective intervention design should address householder needs and the programme’s sociocultural context.  相似文献

This paper aims to characterize the thermal performance of a window system that consists in doubling an existing window, converting it into a ventilated double window. The air coming from the outside circulates upwards through the channel between windows and enters the building through a vent on the top of the window's case. A series of experimental measurements was conducted in a test cell exposed to real outdoor weather conditions located in a mountain region at Centre of Portugal, during heating season in order to determine how this window system can act as a heat exchanger. It was found that such window system act as an efficient heat exchanger using transmission heat losses and solar radiation to preheat ventilation air, thus reducing the building's operational energy costs. An average of about 19 m3/h of air flow rate was found with an air temperature increment within the air gap of about 6 °C, during night-time, for an indoor/outdoor temperature difference of about 16 °C. Air temperature increment reached up to 12 °C using a plastic shutter. With solar radiation, the average of that increment was about 10 °C. This is a simple and cheap building technology which can be implemented both in new and existing buildings.  相似文献

The WHO Housing and health guidelines recommend a minimum indoor temperature of 18°C to prevent cold-related diseases. In Japan, indoor temperatures appear lower than in Euro-American countries because of low insulation standards and use of partial intermittent heating. This study investigated the actual status of indoor temperatures in Japan and the common characteristics of residents who live in cold homes. We conducted a nationwide real-world survey on indoor temperature for 2 weeks in winter. Cross-sectional analyses involving 2190 houses showed that average living room, changing room, and bedroom temperatures were 16.8°C, 13.0°C, and 12.8°C, respectively. Comparison of average living room temperature between prefectures revealed a maximum difference of 6.7°C (Hokkaido: 19.8°C, Kagawa: 13.1°C). Compared to the high-income group, the odds ratio for living room temperature falling below 18°C was 1.38 (95% CI: 1.04-1.84) and 2.07 (95% CI: 1.28-3.33) for the middle- and low-income groups. The odds ratio was 1.96 (95% CI: 1.19-3.22) for single-person households, compared to households living with housemates. Furthermore, lower room temperature was correlated with local heating device use and a larger amount of clothes. These results will be useful in the development of prevention strategies for residents who live in cold homes.  相似文献

A field‐intervention study was carried out in 106 households in Sweden. Without informing the householders, a retrofitted heat pump controller was twice disabled for 1 week at a time over a 4‐week period during the heating season, using a single‐blind cross‐over design with two pseudorandomly selected groups of householders, each experiencing different conditions at any given time. Thermal comfort was assessed by observing the total number of times that householders made adjustments to their set point temperature under each condition. A within‐household, repeated‐measures analysis was performed to determine whether this indicator was positively or negatively affected when the secondary controller was disabled so the heat pump system operated as designed. While over 80% of households showed no effect, among those that did respond to the imposed changes, a Wilcoxon matched‐pairs signed‐ranks test indicates that disabling the retrofitted controller had a negative effect on thermal comfort (P < 0.05 for a 2‐tail test), in that it resulted in significantly more thermostat adjustments. A concurrent increase in the variance of indoor temperature about the household mean was significant (P < 0.001) but small: The range within which indoor temperatures were maintained for 95% of the time (2.5 K) was increased by only 0.3 K (16%), indicating the sensitivity of the approach.  相似文献

Mitigation of thermal stress and adverse indoor climatic conditions is important to older low‐income populations whose age, health, and economic circumstances make them vulnerable to indoor environmental conditions. This research examines whether energy retrofits in affordable housing for older adults can also improve indoor climatic (i.e., temperature, humidity, air infiltration) conditions and whether such improvements correspond with improved health and comfort of residents. An apartment complex for low‐income older adults in Phoenix was the study site. In 2010, renovations were undertaken to make it more energy efficient and to replace interior cabinetry, flooring, and paint with materials that had low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Fifty‐seven residents from 53 apartment units participated in both baseline (pre‐renovation) and 1 year post‐renovation data collection trials. Environmental measures included temperature, relative humidity, and air infiltration. Health measures included general health, emotional distress, and sleep. Four questions addressed residents' perceptions of temperature quality. Results demonstrated a 19% reduction in energy consumption following the retrofit. In addition, fixed effects statistical models of the panel data showed significant stabilization of unit temperature from pre‐retrofit to 1 year post‐retrofit. Reductions in an apartment's temperature extremes of 27.2°C (81°F) and above also corresponded with improvement in occupant's reported health over the same time period, although not with occupant's perceptions of thermal comfort.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to investigate the effect of air temperature on labour productivity in telecommunication offices. The study was conducted as a case study in two call centres because the work in the call centres can be considered to represent typical activities in the telecommunication industry. The study design consisted of an observational approach and an intervention approach. In Call Centre I, the productivity between two zones with temperature difference was compared. In Call Centre II, the intervention was conducted by installing cooling units to lower high temperature in the summer. Productivity was monitored both before and after the intervention, and it was measured as labour productivity by monitoring the number of telephone calls divided by the active work time. The indoor climate of both call centres was determined by measuring thermal climate and concentrations of relevant air pollutants as well as the acoustical environment and lighting levels. The study shows that productivity may fall by 5–7% at the elevated indoor temperatures.  相似文献

Nearly half of the world's population depends on biomass fuels to meet domestic energy needs, producing high levels of pollutants responsible for substantial morbidity and mortality. We compare carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate matter (PM2.5) exposures and kitchen concentrations in households with study‐promoted intervention (OPTIMA‐improved stoves and control stoves) in San Marcos Province, Cajamarca Region, Peru. We determined 48‐h indoor air concentration levels of CO and PM2.5 in 93 kitchen environments and personal exposure, after OPTIMA‐improved stoves had been installed for an average of 7 months. PM2.5 and CO measurements did not differ significantly between OPTIMA‐improved stoves and control stoves. Although not statistically significant, a post hoc stratification of OPTIMA‐improved stoves by level of performance revealed mean PM2.5 and CO levels of fully functional OPTIMA‐improved stoves were 28% lower (n = 20, PM2.5, 136 μg/m3 95% CI 54–217) and 45% lower (n = 25, CO, 3.2 ppm, 95% CI 1.5–4.9) in the kitchen environment compared with the control stoves (n = 34, PM2.5, 189 μg/m3, 95% CI 116–261; n = 44, CO, 5.8 ppm, 95% CI 3.3–8.2). Likewise, although not statistically significant, personal exposures for OPTIMA‐improved stoves were 43% and 17% lower for PM2.5 (n = 23) and CO (n = 25), respectively. Stove maintenance and functionality level are factors worthy of consideration for future evaluations of stove interventions.  相似文献

Traditional neo‐Classical economic theories of change in the older, inner city housing stock are primarily based on assumptions of a filtering down’ of housing quality and occupant households. As an alternative, this paper develops an approach that relies on societal and metropolitan transformations to explain the changing role of older, inner city neighbourhoods. It uses Statistics Canada's Household Income, Facilities and Equipment files for the years 1976 and 1986 in order to identify proportionate change in the characteristics of households occupying housing built before 1940 against those found throughout Census Metropolitan Areas. Most changes invalidate filtering down assumptions. Increases in incomes, the proportion of younger households, education levels, high status employment, all contribute to bring socio‐economic characteristics within older housing closer to the CMA norm. The paper considers the role protective zoning has played in inducing this form of upgrading. Attention is also given to the equivocal impacts of housing and neighbourhood improvement programmes aimed at lower income residents.  相似文献

While renters comprise one-third of urban housing markets, the barriers to long-term housing needs of renters following a disaster are significant. This paper examines post-disaster urban housing policy for renter households following the 2001 Gujarat earthquake in India and its implications for the housing recovery of renters in Bhuj city, an urban area close to the epicenter of the earthquake. Employing a qualitative case study method, the study finds that urban housing policy for renter households was defined by an ad hoc approach with multiple shifts over a period of 4 years. The improvised policy eventually lead to the creation of a publicly funded homeownership program that could rehouse less than one-third of impacted renters, whereas issues of equity, land tenure, lack of affordable units, and uncertainty of recovery for the poorest renters in the city remained.  相似文献
