A vertex v of a connected graph G distinguishes a pair u, w of vertices of G if d(v, u)≠d(v, w), where d(·,·) denotes the length of a shortest path between two vertices in G. A k-partition Π={S 1, S 2, …, S k } of the vertex set of G is said to be a locatic partition if for every pair of distinct vertices v and w of G, there exists a vertex sS i for all 1≤ik that distinguishes v and w. The cardinality of a largest locatic partition is called the locatic number of G. In this paper, we study the locatic number of paths, cycles and characterize all the connected graphs of order n having locatic number n, n?1 and n?2. Given an undirected graph G = (V, E), with vertex set V and edge set E, the pseudoachromatic number ψ(G) of the graph G is the maximum number of colors used to color the vertices in such a way that, for any given pair of colors i, j there exists an edge e = (u, v) ∈ E(G) such that u is colored i and v is colored j. In this paper we give a complete characterization of when the ψ of the join of any two graphs is the sum of the ψ of the two graphs.  相似文献

We prove that computing a single pair of vertices that are mapped onto each other by an isomorphism φ between two isomorphic graphs is as hard as computing φ itself. This result optimally improves upon a result of Gál, Halevi, Lipton, and Petrank. We establish a similar, albeit slightly weaker, result about computing complete Hamiltonian cycles of a graph from partial Hamiltonian cycles. We say a vertex v in a graph G covers a vertex w if v=w or if v and w are adjacent. A subset of vertices of G is a dominating set if it collectively covers all vertices in the graph. The dominating set problem, which is NP-hard, consists of finding a smallest possible dominating set for a graph. The straightforward greedy strategy for finding a small dominating set in a graph consists of successively choosing vertices which cover the largest possible number of previously uncovered vertices. Several variations on this greedy heuristic are described and the results of extensive testing of these variations is presented. A more sophisticated procedure for choosing vertices, which takes into account the number of ways in which an uncovered vertex may be covered, appears to be the most successful of the algorithms which are analyzed. For our experimental testing, we used both random graphs and graphs constructed by test case generators which produce graphs with a given density and a specified size for the smallest dominating set. We found that these generators were able to produce challenging graphs for the algorithms, thus helping to discriminate among them, and allowing a greater variety of graphs to be used in the experiments. We present here a general framework to design algorithms that compute H-join. For a given bipartite graph H, we say that a graph G admits a H-join decomposition or simply a H-join, if the vertices of G can be partitioned in |H| parts connected as in H. This graph H is a kind of pattern, that we want to discover in G. This framework allows us to present fastest known algorithms for the computation of P 4-join (aka N-join), P 5-join (aka W-join), C 6-join (aka 6-join). We also generalize this method to find a homogeneous pair (also known as 2-module), a pair {M 1,M 2} such that for every vertex x?(M 1M 2) and i∈{1,2}, x is either adjacent to all vertices in M i or to none of them. First used in the context of perfect graphs (Chvátal and Sbihi in Graphs Comb. 3:127–139, 1987), it is a generalization of splits (a.k.a. 1-joins) and of modules. The algorithmics to compute them appears quite involved. In this paper, we describe an O(mn 2)-time algorithm computing all maximal homogeneous pairs of a graph, which not only improves a previous bound of O(mn 3) for finding only one pair (Everett et al. in Discrete Appl. Math. 72:209–218, 1997), but also uses a nice structural property of homogenous pairs, allowing to compute a canonical decomposition tree for sesquiprime graphs (i.e., graphs G having no module and such that for every vertex vG, G?v also has no module).  相似文献

A bidirectional resource network is a directed graph in which any two vertices υ i , υ j are either not adjacent or are connected by a pair of edges (υ i , υ j ), (υ j , υ i ). Non-negative numbers (resources) are assigned to vertices. The rules of functioning for such networks are formulated and processes of resource distribution in bidirectional networks represented by complete graphs are considered. It is shown that limit states of such networks do not depend on initial resource distributions.  相似文献

Let λ(G) be the edge connectivity of G. The direct product of graphs G and H is the graph with vertex set V(G×H)=V(GV(H), where two vertices (u1,v1) and (u2,v2) are adjacent in G×H if u1u2E(G) and v1v2E(H). We prove that λ(G×Kn)=min{n(n−1)λ(G),(n−1)δ(G)} for every nontrivial graph G and n?3. A set of Hamiltonian cycles {C 1, C 2, …, C k } of G is mutually independent if any two different Hamiltonian cycles are independent. For a hamiltonian graph G, the mutually independent Hamiltonianicity number of G, denoted by h(G), is the maximum integer k such that for any vertex u of G there exist k-mutually independent Hamiltonian cycles of G starting at u. A vertex-colored graph is rainbow vertex-connected if any two vertices are connected by a path whose internal vertices have distinct colors, which was introduced by Krivelevich and Yuster. The rainbow vertex-connection of a connected graph G, denoted by rvc(G), is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make G rainbow vertex-connected. In this paper, we study the complexity of determining the rainbow vertex-connection of a graph and prove that computing rvc(G) is NP-Hard. Moreover, we show that it is already NP-Complete to decide whether rvc(G)=2. We also prove that the following problem is NP-Complete: given a vertex-colored graph G, check whether the given coloring makes G rainbow vertex-connected.  相似文献

Cyclic bundle Hamiltonicity cbH(G) of a graph G is the minimal n for which there is an automorphism α of G such that the graph bundle C n α G is Hamiltonian. A k-spanner of a graph G is a spanning subgraph of G in which the distance between any pair of vertices is at most k times the distance in G. We prove that for fixed k,w, the problem of deciding if a given graph has a k-spanner of treewidth w is fixed-parameter tractable on graphs of bounded degree. In particular, this implies that finding a k-spanner that is a tree (a tree k-spanner) is fixed-parameter tractable on graphs of bounded degree. In contrast, we observe that if the graph has only one vertex of unbounded degree, then Treek-Spanner is NP-complete for k?4.  相似文献

Let G be a graph, and let each vertex v of G have a positive integer weight ω(v). A multicoloring of G is to assign each vertex v a set of ω(v) colors so that any pair of adjacent vertices receive disjoint sets of colors. This paper presents an algorithm to find a multicoloring of a given series-parallel graph G with the minimum number of colors in time O(n W), where n is the number of vertices and W is the maximum weight of vertices in G.  相似文献

Given a graph G=(V,E) with strictly positive integer weights ω i on the vertices iV, an interval coloring of G is a function I that assigns an interval I(i) of ω i consecutive integers (called colors) to each vertex iV so that I(i)∩I(j)= for all edges {i,j}∈E. The interval coloring problem is to determine an interval coloring that uses as few colors as possible. Assuming that a strictly positive integer weight δ ij is associated with each edge {i,j}∈E, a bandwidth coloring of G is a function c that assigns an integer (called a color) to each vertex iV so that |c(i)−c(j)|≥δ ij for all edges {i,j}∈E. The bandwidth coloring problem is to determine a bandwidth coloring with minimum difference between the largest and the smallest colors used. We prove that an optimal solution of the interval coloring problem can be obtained by solving a series of bandwidth coloring problems. Computational experiments demonstrate that such a reduction can help to solve larger instances or to obtain better upper bounds on the optimal solution value of the interval coloring problem.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E,w) be a directed graph, where w:V→ℝ is a weight function defined on its vertices. The bottleneck weight, or the capacity, of a path is the smallest weight of a vertex on the path. For two vertices u,v the capacity from u to v, denoted by c(u,v), is the maximum bottleneck weight of a path from u to v. In the All-Pairs Bottleneck Paths (APBP) problem the task is to find the capacities for all ordered pairs of vertices. Our main result is an O(n 2.575) time algorithm for APBP. The exponent is derived from the exponent of fast matrix multiplication.  相似文献

For an ordered subset W= w1, w2,?…?wk of vertices and a vertex u in a connected graph G, the representation of u with respect to W is the ordered k-tuple r(u|W)=(d(u, w1), d(u, w2),?…?, d(u, wk)), where d(x, y) represents the distance between the vertices x and y. The set W is a local metric generator for G if every two adjacent vertices of G have distinct representations. A minimum local metric generator is called a local metric basis for G and its cardinality the local metric dimension of G. We show that the computation of the local metric dimension of a graph with cut vertices is reduced to the computation of the local metric dimension of the so-called primary subgraphs. The main results are applied to specific constructions including bouquets of graphs, rooted product graphs, corona product graphs, block graphs and chain of graphs.  相似文献

The toughness of a non-complete graph G=(V, E) is defined as τ(G)=min{|S|/ω(G?S)}, where the minimum is taken over all cutsets S of vertices of G and ω(G?S) denotes the number of components of the resultant graph G?S by deletion of S. The corona of two graphs G and H, written as G° H, is the graph obtained by taking one copy of G and |V(G)| copies of H, and then joining the ith vertex of G to every vertex in the ith copy of H. In this paper, we investigate the toughness of this kind of graphs and obtain the exact value for the corona of two graphs belonging to some families as paths, cycles, stars, wheels or complete graphs.  相似文献

Given an edge-weighted undirected graph G and two prescribed vertices u and v, a next-to-shortest (u,v)-path is a shortest (u,v)-path amongst all (u,v)-paths having length strictly greater than the length of a shortest (u,v)-path. In this paper, we deal with the problem of computing a next-to-shortest (u,v)-path. We propose an O(n2){\mathcal{O}}(n^{2}) time algorithm for solving this problem, which significantly improves the bound of a previous one in O(n3){\mathcal{O}}(n^{3}) time where n is the number of vertices in G.  相似文献

Abstract. There is an error in our paper ``An Approximation Algorithm for Minimum-Cost Vertex- Connectivity Problems' (Algorithmica (1997), 18:21—43). In that paper we considered the following problem: given an undirected graph and values r ij for each pair of vertices i and j , find a minimum-cost set of edges such that there are r ij vertex-disjoint paths between vertices i and j . We gave approximation algorithms for two special cases of this problem. Our algorithms rely on a primal—dual approach which has led to approximation algorithms for many edge-connectivity problems. The algorithms work in a series of stages; in each stage an augmentation subroutine augments the connectivity of the current solution. The error is in a lemma for the proof of the performance guarantee of the augmentation subroutine. In the case r ij = k for all i,j , we described a polynomial-time algorithm that claimed to output a solution of cost no more than 2 H (k) times optimal, where H = 1 + 1/2 + · · · + 1/n . This result is erroneous. We describe an example where our primal—dual augmentation subroutine, when augmenting a k -vertex connected graph to a (k+1) -vertex connected graph, gives solutions that are a factor Ω(k) away from the minimum. In the case r ij ∈ {0,1,2} for all i,j , we gave a polynomial-time algorithm which outputs a solution of cost no more than three times the optimal. In this case we prove that the statement in the lemma that was erroneous for the k -vertex connected case does hold, and that the algorithm performs as claimed.  相似文献

Minor Containment is a fundamental problem in Algorithmic Graph Theory used as a subroutine in numerous graph algorithms. A model of a graph H in a graph G is a set of disjoint connected subgraphs of G indexed by the vertices of H, such that if {u,v} is an edge of H, then there is an edge of G between components C u and C v . A graph H is a minor of G if G contains a model of H as a subgraph. We give an algorithm that, given a planar n-vertex graph G and an h-vertex graph H, either finds in time $\mathcal{O}(2^{\mathcal{O}(h)} \cdot n +n^{2}\cdot\log n)$ a model of H in G, or correctly concludes that G does not contain H as a minor. Our algorithm is the first single-exponential algorithm for this problem and improves all previous minor testing algorithms in planar graphs. Our technique is based on a novel approach called partially embedded dynamic programming.  相似文献
