Towards sustainable cities

Abstract

Sustainability has interconnected economic, social and ecological aspects. Spatial restructuring could make a significant contribution. Key public policies include transport, land‐use planning, housing, infrastructure, and the redistribution of work and incomes. Australia has the opportunity to be an international exemplar in addressing the challenge of sustainability. Existing economic structures, spatial inertia and the lack of political will are significant obstacles.     

我国房地产发展与经济增长关系的时空差异分析

基于时间和空间的视角,运用面板数据对我国房地产发展与经济增长的关系进行了实证分析。研究结果显示,我国房地产业发展与经济增长的关系存在着显著的时间效应与区域效应。2001年以后房地产业对经济增长的带动作用趋于明显,并且这一作用在东部地区尤其显著。     

Land regulating economy as a policy instrument in urban China

The regulation of urban land in China has become more important as a policy instrument, suggesting that land supply may be a catalyst for urban economic growth. Based on official data on land use change for the period 2005 to 2014, an econometric model of urban GDP growth reveals lagged effects of land supply on economic growth. Land supply has a more significant effect on economic growth in prefecture-level cities than in county-level cities. City size and development stage also shape the effects of land on economic growth; in addition, land plays different roles in economic growth in eastern coastal cities and in cities in the central and western parts of China. Different land use allocations have been successfully used as a tool for fostering economic growth in urban China.

Responses of selected economic indicators to construction output shocks: the case of Singapore

The volume of construction output fluctuates in response to changes in demand and supply conditions. Due to the multiple linkages that the construction industry has with other economic sectors and the entire economy, the output shock is propagated through the economic system and reflected in several economic indicators, such as the outputs of other sectors, balance of payments and general prices. A study is reported on the short-term responses of some economic indicators in Singapore following a shock in the construction output, using the Granger causality approach, the impulse response function and variance decomposition analysis. Construction output shock had significant impact on the outputs of the commerce sector and ‘other services’. The heavy reliance of the Singapore construction industry on imported inputs has a direct impact on the balance of payments.     

Barriers to sustainable economic development: The Dallas-Fort Worth experience

This article examines the scope of existing economic development activity and the motivations and perceptions of practitioners to shed light on the barriers to sustainable practice. In contrast to related fields like urban planning, the economic development literature has minimally examined how practitioners think about sustainable development and the extent to which sustainable development principles are adopted in practice. This omission is significant because economic development policies can have a notable impact on the sustainable development goals of environmental protection and social equity alongside economic growth. To capture the extent to which economic developers engage in sustainable development and the barriers that practitioners face, we study fifteen cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. We find that six key barriers - a conventional economic development mindset, incentive-based practice, a lack of resources, ad hoc planning, inter-regional competition, and a lack of coordinated regional planning - impede sustainable economic development in the region.     

REGIONAL INPUT-OUTPUT ANALYSIS OF ENERGY RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT The development of energy resources has significant effects on a regional economic system, two alternative approaches can be followed once u regional input-output analysis framework has been chosen to provide the modelling background for the evaluation of energy-related impacts. The first deals with the evaluation of changes in economic activity and employment due to energy development, through the utilisation of the basic input-output framework and the consideration of detailed labour and material requirements. The second copes with the integration of energy with the other regional economic activities and provides the possibility to consider structural changes, in the regional economic system.
Both approaches are applied to a region of Greece with a promising energy potential. The first approach should he considered as an initial and very useful step in the impact analysis process. Concerning the second approach, it was clear that the dynamic dosed model, with respect to households, is the best formulation for regional energy and economic policy purposes.     

How does sustainable energy utilities integration promote green recovery? Case of central and Eastern Europe

Green economic recovery in the post-corona era has been proposed as a practical discourse in solving environmental and ecological threats. This paper measures the effect of trade in green energy utilities and green economic growth in Central and Eastern European countries from 2010 to 2021. According to the Fully Modified OLS (FMOLS) estimations, the trade of green energy utilities has a positive and statistically significant coefficient. The primary policy implications are developing green financial markets, digitalizing green finance, and regional cooperation in green energy utilities transfers.

Economic feasibility study for wastewater treatment: A cost-benefit analysis

Water resource management should be made from a multidisciplinary perspective. In this sense, economic research into the design and implementation of policies for the efficient management of water resources has been emphasized by the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) is one of the more widely accepted economic instruments since it is a rational and systematic decision-making support tool. Moreover, the wastewater treatment process has significant associated environmental benefits. However, these benefits are often left uncalculated because they have no market value. In this paper, using the concept of shadow price, a quantification of the environmental benefits derived from wastewater treatment is made. Once the environmental benefits are estimated and the economic costs of the treatment processes are known, a CBA is made for each of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) under study. In this way, a useful economic feasibility indicator is obtained for WWTP operation.

Logistics and economic growth: a panel data approach

Logistics system has been increasingly recognized as one of the important driving forces for economic growth. This paper investigates the long-run relationship between logistics investment and economic growth, using a dataset covering 30 provinces over the period from 1998 to 2007 in China. Conditional convergence model with dynamic panel data approach is employed, and the results of System-GMM estimations show a significant and positive impact of logistics investment on regional economic growth in China, controlling for a number of other factors. Considering the immense inequality of regional economic development in China, a comparative analysis of regional economic growth between coastal provinces and interior provinces is also conducted. The results suggest that interior provincial incomes as a system tend to converge, while there is no evidence supporting the convergences of coastal provincial incomes. The findings also show that the contributive role of logistics investment is greater for undeveloped interior provinces than for coastal provinces.

经济转型时期城镇商业空间演变探析——以内蒙古资源型城镇A为例

研究对象A镇位于内蒙古自治区赤峰市,是经济重镇,也是煤炭资源型城镇。随着城镇单一经济支柱产业资源—煤炭资源逐渐衰竭,自"十五"开始,地方政府开始进行经济结构调整,第三产业中的商业服务业成为重点产业之一。迄今,城区在城市规划建设和提升城市形象等方面做出了各种努力。在此背景下,该研究以城镇经济转型阶段该城镇中心区商业区的发展改变为对象,通过文献研究、实地调查、统计分析、历史分析等方法,对转型时期的城镇商业空间形态演变进行分析,提出这一特殊时期A镇旧城商业空间演变的特点和规律。研究结果表明,随着城镇商业、服务业的显著发展,商业空间也相应发展演变。     

素混凝土桩复合地基的工程实践

随着地基处理的广泛应用与发展，复合地基的概念不断深化，复合地基从柔性(碎石桩)到半刚(石灰桩、水泥土桩)，发展到刚性复合地基(素混凝土桩、CFG桩)，分类日臻完善，计算理论与施工技术更加实际，使用范围也从多层住宅发展到高层和大型工业建筑，经济效益和社会效益显著。     

臭氧水处理技术在南美白对虾养殖中的应用研究

笔者以静态试验为基础,对臭氧水处理技术在对虾实际养殖中的应用进行了研究.研究表明,臭氧直接投加至养殖池内,在投加量为0.07 mg/L的条件下,养殖水质(DO、弧菌等)有明显改善.经济性分析显示,采用臭氧技术的对虾养殖池比传统的养殖方式每亩多收益1 000元以上,经济效益显著.     

Greening Port Misery: Marketing the Green Face of Waterfront Redevelopment in Port Adelaide, South Australia

Port Adelaide is on the cusp of an urban renaissance. Once a thriving industrial centre, economic restructuring has left the Port in a vulnerable position. Suffering from the ills of economic and environmental decline, collaborative efforts between the South Australian State Government and private sector property developers have aimed to transform the Port to a cosmopolitan and progressive landscape. While much urban regeneration literature has focused on the social and economic issues associated with such large-scale redevelopments, the environmental improvements purported by these developments are largely unexplored. A significant aspect of Port Adelaide's transformation is the deliberate mobilisation of an environmental discourse in marketing materials. These materials are key texts serving to both promote and legitimise the redevelopment. Data presented in this article problematises the purported environmental benefits associated with the marketing of Port Adelaide's redevelopment, revealing it as a rhetorical form of 'greenwashing'.     

基于BIM-Queuing Theory 的超高层施工电梯配置方法研究

随着中国经济的高速发展,相对发达的城市都在建设超高层建筑并将其作为自己的地标性建筑。由于超高层建筑施工过程中工作面有限,投入资金量大,加快施工进度从而降低施工成本显得尤为重要。目前施工单位的施工管理水平有限,进度与成本两个目标的权衡变得很困难,施工单位在布置施工电梯时多是根据经验进行粗略估算,这可能会造成巨大的资源浪费。通过搜集和研究当前施工电梯在超高层建筑中的应用现状,应用BIM 技术与排队论,结合施工电梯的实际应用状况,对施工电梯布置方法进行研究,力求为施工单位在配置施工电梯时提供一种新的思路,加强施工单位在施工过程中的管理水平,从而提高经济效益。
