Open systems cabling as a building utility

Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) is intended to facilitate interworking between data terminal equipments (DTEs) of different designs and from multiple vendors, thus providing the user community with a broad level of independence in the procurement of IT equipment. Whilst OSI local area network (LAN) standards have aimed to fulfil this objective, actual variations in data rates, media types and cabling topographies have hindered progress. The `tree and branch' cabling architecture presented in the paper provides a powerful solution to these problems. 100 Mb/s data transmission on UTP and STP cabling for demandpriority networks

There have been considerable advances towards higher speed (100 Mb/s) workgroup LANs which support the existing UTP and STP structured cabling utilized by 10 BASE-T and token ring LANs. The paper describes the transmission techniques used by an IEEE 802.12 demand priority network with UTP and STP structured cabling. The UTP transmission scheme supports categories 3-5 UTP (i.e. voice-grade and data-grade) using a 5B6B block coded binary signalling scheme on four pairs. This binary signalling scheme is shown to provide better immunity against crosstalk and external (impulse) noise than multilevel signalling schemes. The STP scheme combines the strengths of the 5B6B block code with signalling technology similar to existing SDDI links

Getting IT right: simulation of computer systems

Difficulties in the successful introduction of computer systems have reached crisis proportions. Many solutions have been proposed to deal with the problems, but as fast as these are developed, generations of IT posing new problems for the system designer. In addition, many of these methods fail to address behavioural and performance aspects of computer systems. An obvious approach is to use computer techniques to simulate the IT system. This type of simulation is accepted in other engineering disciplines as an essential method of ensuring that design objectives are achieved. However, there are significant differences in the manner in which simulation methods need to be applied in IT systems. The authors describe how computer simulation methods can be used to tackle the problem

Measuring user satisfaction in an outsourcing environment

Outsourcing is a term that encompasses a variety of approaches to contracting for information technology (IT) services. It is defined as a transfer of any particular IT activity or a combination of activities from an organization using them to one or more external service providers. IT outsourcing leads to significant changes in the management processes of the IT organization. For example, while IT managers have always had the responsibility for ensuring that users within their organization maintain a high degree of satisfaction, they now have to monitor the quality of service, even though they are no longer the providers of the service. This gets further complicated when only some parts of the IT functions are outsourced while others are provided by an internal IT department. Thus, developing a comprehensive set of measurement tools and mechanisms is an important step toward monitoring the quality of service provided by both an outside source and an IT department. This paper investigates the usefulness of an existing user-satisfaction measurement instrument for identifying problem areas in a multiprovider outsourcing environment, where an external service provider and an internal IT department each has different roles in the system. It discusses the rationale for measuring user satisfaction and the instruments to carry out the measurement procedure. It reports the results of implementing and testing a previously developed, documented, and validated user-satisfaction instrument in an outsourcing environment and draws practical conclusions from the results

PoE设计方案分析

以太网供电PoE（PowerOverEthernet）是一种局域网技术,通过现有的Cat5/Cat5e/Cat6以太网电缆给IP终端设备（如IP电话机、无线局域网接入点AP等）同时提供数据的传输和直流电源的供给,能在确保现有结构化布线安全的同时保证现有网络的正常运作,最大限度地降低成本。当前PoE技术已在企业与工业中得到广泛的应用,文中提出几种PoE设计方案,希望对PoE产品的开发有所帮助。     

基于位交换的电子配线技术

传统结构化布线的跳线由工程师在现场手工完成,效率较低。文中提出一种电子配线技术ePatch,用户可以在管理终端上远程完成电子配线动作。以太网交换机进行帧交换时建立了临时虚拟链路,文中提出利用端口对应表让交换机进行＂位交换＂,实现了永久虚拟链路,永久虚链路可以替代传统的跳线,从而达到电子配线的目的。
