Text search engines are inadequate for indexing and searching XML documents because they ignore metadata and aggregation structure implicit in the XML documents. On the other hand, the query languages supported by specialized XML search engines are very complex. In this paper, we present a simple yet flexible query language, and develop its semantics to enable intuitively appealing extraction of relevant fragments of information while simultaneously falling back on retrieval through plain text search if necessary. Our approach combines and generalizes several available techniques to obtain precise and coherent results.

Document engineering is the computer science discipline that investigates systems for documents in any form and in all media. As with the relationship between software engineering and software, document engineering is concerned with principles, tools and processes that improve our ability to create, manage, and maintain documents (). The ACM Symposium on Document Engineering is an annual meeting of researchers active in document engineering: it is sponsored by ACM by means of the ACM SIGWEB Special Interest Group. In this editorial, we first point to work carried out in the context of document engineering, which are directly related to multimedia tools and applications. We conclude with a summary of the papers presented in this special issue.

In this paper we examine adaptive time-based web applications (or presentations). These are interactive presentations where time dictates which parts of the application are presented (providing the major structuring paradigm), and that require interactivity and other dynamic adaptation. We investigate the current technologies available to create such presentations and their shortcomings, and suggest a mechanism for addressing these shortcomings. This mechanism, SMIL State, can be used to add user-defined state to declarative time-based languages such as SMIL or SVG animation, thereby enabling the author to create control flows that are difficult to realize within the temporal containment model of the host languages. In addition, SMIL State can be used as a bridging mechanism between languages, enabling easy integration of external components into the web application. Finally, SMIL State enables richer expressions for content control. This paper defines SMIL State in terms of an introductory example, followed by a detailed specification of the State model. Next, the implementation of this model is discussed. We conclude with a set of potential use cases, including dynamic content adaptation and delayed insertion of custom content such as advertisements.

We present a study of using camera-phones and visual-tags to access mobile services. Firstly, a user-experience study is described in which participants were both observed learning to interact with a prototype mobile service and interviewed about their experiences. Secondly, a pointing-device task is presented in which quantitative data was gathered regarding the speed and accuracy with which participants aimed and clicked on visual-tags using camera-phones. We found that participants’ attitudes to visual-tag-based applications were broadly positive, although they had several important reservations about camera-phone technology more generally. Data from our pointing-device task demonstrated that novice users were able to aim and click on visual-tags quickly (well under 3 s per pointing-device trial on average) and accurately (almost all meeting our defined speed/accuracy tradeoff of 6% error-rate). Based on our findings, design lessons for camera-phone and visual-tag applications are presented.

As music can be represented symbolically, most of the existing methods extend some string matching algorithms to retrieve musical patterns in a music database. However, not all retrieved patterns are perceptually significant because some of them are, in fact, inaudible. Music is perceived in groupings of musical notes called streams. The process of grouping musical notes into streams is called stream segregation. Stream-crossing musical patterns are perceptually insignificant and should be pruned from the retrieval results. This can be done if all musical notes in a music database are segregated into streams and musical patterns are retrieved from the streams. Findings in auditory psychology are utilized in this paper, in which stream segregation is modelled as a clustering process and an adapted single-link clustering algorithm is proposed. Supported by experiments on real music data, streams are identified by the proposed algorithm with considerable accuracy.

This paper describes the simulated car racing competition that was arranged as part of the 2007 IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation. Both the game that was used as the domain for the competition, the controllers submitted as entries to the competition and its results are presented. With this paper, we hope to provide some insight into the efficacy of various computational intelligence methods on a well-defined game task, as well as an example of one way of running a competition. In the process, we provide a set of reference results for those who wish to use the simplerace game to benchmark their own algorithms. The paper is co-authored by the organizers and participants of the competition.

In this paper, we present a new model for time-series forecasting using radial basis functions (RBFs) as a unit of artificial neural networks (ANNs), which allows the inclusion of exogenous information (EI) without additional pre-processing. We begin by summarizing the most well-known EI techniques used ad hoc, i.e., principal component analysis (PCA) and independent component analysis (ICA). We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of these techniques in time-series forecasting using Spanish bank and company stocks. Then, we describe a new hybrid model for time-series forecasting which combines ANNs with genetic algorithms (GAs). We also describe the possibilities when implementing the model on parallel processing systems.

Finding cohesive clusters for analyzing knowledge communities   总被引:6,自引:5,他引:1
Documents and authors can be clustered into “knowledge communities” based on the overlap in the papers they cite. We introduce a new clustering algorithm, Streemer, which finds cohesive foreground clusters embedded in a diffuse background, and use it to identify knowledge communities as foreground clusters of papers which share common citations. To analyze the evolution of these communities over time, we build predictive models with features based on the citation structure, the vocabulary of the papers, and the affiliations and prestige of the authors. Findings include that scientific knowledge communities tend to grow more rapidly if their publications build on diverse information and if they use a narrow vocabulary.

This paper describes the DocMIR system which captures, analyzes and indexes automatically meetings, conferences, lectures, etc. by taking advantage of the documents projected (e.g. slideshows, budget tables, figures, etc.) during the events. For instance, the system can automatically apply the above-mentioned procedures to a lecture and automatically index the event according to the presented slides and their contents. For indexing, the system requires neither specific software installed on the presenter’s computer nor any conscious intervention of the speaker throughout the presentation. The only material required by the system is the electronic presentation file of the speaker. Even if not provided, the system would temporally segment the presentation and offer a simple storyboard-like browsing interface. The system runs on several capture boxes connected to cameras and microphones that records events, synchronously. Once the recording is over, indexing is automatically performed by analyzing the content of the captured video containing projected documents and detects the scene changes, identifies the documents, computes their duration and extracts their textual content. Each of the captured images is identified from a repository containing all original electronic documents, captured audio–visual data and metadata created during post-production. The identification is based on documents’ signatures, which hierarchically structure features from both layout structure and color distributions of the document images. Video segments are finally enriched with textual content of the identified original documents, which further facilitate the query and retrieval without using OCR. The signature-based indexing method proposed in this article is robust and works with low-resolution images and can be applied to several other applications including real-time document recognition, multimedia IR and augmented reality systems.

In this paper we present a framework for unified, personalized access to heterogeneous multimedia content in distributed repositories. Focusing on semantic analysis of multimedia documents, metadata, user queries and user profiles, it contributes to the bridging of the gap between the semantic nature of user queries and raw multimedia documents. The proposed approach utilizes as input visual content analysis results, as well as analyzes and exploits associated textual annotation, in order to extract the underlying semantics, construct a semantic index and classify documents to topics, based on a unified knowledge and semantics representation model. It may then accept user queries, and, carrying out semantic interpretation and expansion, retrieve documents from the index and rank them according to user preferences, similarly to text retrieval. All processes are based on a novel semantic processing methodology, employing fuzzy algebra and principles of taxonomic knowledge representation. The first part of this work presented in this paper deals with data and knowledge models, manipulation of multimedia content annotations and semantic indexing, while the second part will continue on the use of the extracted semantic information for personalized retrieval.

For deaf persons to have ready access to information and communication technologies (ICTs), the latter must be usable in sign language (SL), i.e., include interlanguage interfaces. Such applications will be accepted by deaf users if they are reliable and respectful of SL specificities—use of space and iconicity as the structuring principles of the language. Before developing ICT applications, it is necessary to model these features, both to enable analysis of SL videos and to generate SL messages by means of signing avatars. This paper presents a signing space model, implemented within a context of automatic analysis and automatic generation, which are currently under development.

Connecting the family with awareness systems   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Awareness systems have attracted significant research interest for their potential to support interpersonal relationships. Investigations of awareness systems for the domestic environment have suggested that such systems can help individuals stay in touch with dear friends or family and provide affective benefits to their users. Our research provides empirical evidence to refine and substantiate such suggestions. We report our experience with designing and evaluating the ASTRA awareness system, for connecting households and mobile family members. We introduce the concept of connectedness and its measurement through the Affective Benefits and Costs of communication questionnaire (ABC-Q). We inform results that testify the benefits of sharing experiences at the moment they happen without interrupting potential receivers. Finally, we document the role that lightweight, picture-based communication can play in the range of communication media available.

ONTRACK: Dynamically adapting music playback to support navigation   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Listening to music on personal, digital devices whilst mobile is an enjoyable, everyday activity. We explore a scheme for exploiting this practice to immerse listeners in navigation cues. Our prototype, ONTRACK, continuously adapts audio, modifying the spatial balance and volume to lead listeners to their target destination. First we report on an initial lab-based evaluation that demonstrated the approach’s efficacy: users were able to complete tasks within a reasonable time and their subjective feedback was positive. Encouraged by these results we constructed a handheld prototype. Here, we discuss this implementation and the results of field-trials. These indicate that even with a low-fidelity realisation of the concept, users can quite effectively navigate complicated routes.

The effect of Internet use as a mediating variable on self-efficacy as it relates to the cognition of network-changing possibility (i.e., connecting people or groups with different social backgrounds) was examined. The results showed that Internet use (i.e., the frequency of sending e-mail, friends made on the Internet) had a positive effect on the cognition of network-changing possibility. The cognition that it is possible to connect people with different social backgrounds by using the Internet also had a positive effect on self-efficacy. On the other hand, the cognition that it is possible to find people or groups who share beliefs and interests by using the Internet negatively affected self-efficacy. Hence, it was found that the effect of Internet use on self-efficacy was different as a function of cognition of network-changing possibility. In this paper the authors, starting from the experience described and commented on in earlier work by Mancini and Sbordone, deal with the three main epistemological problems that the research group they participated in had to face:
–  The conflicting and ambiguous relationship between psychoanalysis and social research
–  The classical epistemological problem of the relationship between the subject and object of research within the perspective of action research
–  The problem arising from their experience, i.e., the risk of manipulation, and the way to deal with it from an epistemic perspective
The three problems are dealt with one at a time, but from a common perspective, i.e., the attempt to integrate the richness and variety of human subjectivity in social research. As to the relationship between psychoanalysis and social research, a special section is devoted to the implications of an integrated or convergent methodology on team-working in organisations.

We provide the complete record of methodology that let us evolve BrilliAnt, the winner of the Ant Wars contest. Ant Wars contestants are virtual ants collecting food on a grid board in the presence of a competing ant. BrilliAnt has been evolved through a competitive one-population coevolution using genetic programming and fitnessless selection. In this paper, we detail the evolutionary setup that lead to BrilliAnt’s emergence, assess its direct and indirect human-competitiveness, and describe the behavioral patterns observed in its strategy.

Scenarios have been shown to be very helpful in identifying and communicating requirements for computer-based systems (CBSs). However, they appear not to be applicable to the rest of the CBS development process. Making scenarios more useful for the entire software development lifecycle requires integrating scenarios to other representations used during CBS development. This integration is achieved with tracing technology. Having integrated scenarios into the entire software development lifecycle creates the necessity to maintain scenarios through the inevitable changes that they and other documents undergo and to subject them to configuration management. We have prototyped automated support for full-lifecycle scenario management and have applied it to some non-trivial systems. This paper is an amalgamation and extension of the conference papers numbered 8, 9, 10, and 11 in the bibliography of this paper.

Extraction of sequences of events from news and other documents based on the publication times of these documents has been shown to be extremely effective in tracking past events. This paper addresses the issue of constructing an optimal information preserving decomposition of the time period associated with a given document set, i.e., a decomposition with the smallest number of subintervals, subject to no loss of information. We introduce the notion of the compressed interval decomposition, where each subinterval consists of consecutive time points having identical information content. We define optimality, and show that any optimal information preserving decomposition of the time period is a refinement of the compressed interval decomposition. We define several special classes of measure functions (functions that measure the prevalence of keywords in the document set and assign them numeric values), based on their effect on the information computed as document sets are combined. We give algorithms, appropriate for different classes of measure functions, for computing an optimal information preserving decomposition of a given document set. We studied the effectiveness of these algorithms by computing several compressed interval and information preserving decompositions for a subset of the Reuters–21578 document set. The experiments support the obvious conclusion that the temporal information gleaned from a document set is strongly dependent on the measure function used and on other user-defined parameters.
