Genetic and phenotypic parameters of body weight (BW), hip height, heart girth, and linear conformation traits were estimated from field data for 7344 lactating Holstein heifers from 560 herds. Mean BW was around 540 kg at calving, decreased to a minimum of 514 kg by wk 6, and increased to > 590 kg by wk 45 of lactation. The statistical model for BW included month of recording, lactation stage, pregnancy stage, proportion of Holstein genes, parity of the dam, calving age, herd, and animal. Variation between herds accounted for 33% of the phenotypic variation of BW. Estimated heritability was 0.33 for BW and ranged from 0.32 to 0.54 for heart girth, hip height, and conformation traits. Genetic correlations of BW with heart girth, hip height, body depth, rump width, and muscularity ranged from 0.48 to 0.77. The accuracy of a selection index was 0.90 for direct selection and 0.83 for indirect selection using information on those conformation traits of 50 daughters. Genetic variation of BW is considerable, and genetic evaluation of BW can be based on data for conformation traits from a field recording system with only a limited loss of accuracy.  相似文献

Seventy postpubertal Holstein replacement heifers were assigned to one of four treatments to assess effects of accelerated postpubertal growth on performance during first lactation. Heifers were fed control or accelerated diets from 10 mo of age until parturition, and breeding was initiated at 14 or 10 mo of age, respectively. Heifers were also subdivided into two breeding groups (target or delayed) based on normal AI breeding efficiencies. Heifers fed accelerated diets had a higher average daily gain (933 vs. 778 g/d) and calved earlier (21.7 vs. 24.6 mo) than did heifers fed control diets. Heifers fed accelerated diets had similar prepartum (10 d) BW, but lower wither height and postpartum BW, than heifers fed the control. For heifers fed accelerated diets, milk fat and milk protein yields were lower, and milk fat percentage was higher, at mo 1 and 2; milk fat percentage was lower at mo 3 to 7 of lactation. Delayed bred heifers calved later (approximately 2 mo), had higher prepartum and postpartum BW, and were taller at the withers than target bred heifers. Delayed breeding resulted in higher body condition scores at calving and a greater incidence of dystocia, but lactation performance was not affected. Accelerated postpubertal growth resulted in earlier calving at similar prepartum BW, but data for wither height, pelvic area, and postpartum BW suggested that heifers fed accelerated diets were smaller. Accelerated postpubertal growth and early calving reduced performance during first lactation, but the exact mechanisms could not be determined.  相似文献

Brahman-crossbred and English x Exotic feeder heifers were exposed to low (5 per leg), medium (12 per leg), and high (30 per leg) stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), population levels to test relative tolerance of these cattle breeds to stable flies. The Brahman-crossbred heifers were tolerant to stable flies only when they were 12-13 mo old. At the same age, the English x Exotic heifers sustained reductions in average daily gain (ADG) at all three stable fly population levels of 0.22 kg/d (11.2%). At 14-15 mo of age, both breeds were affected only by the high stable fly level. The reduction in ADG was approximately 0.16 kg/d (10.6%) for both breeds. Stable fly numbers on the heifers varied with time of day. Both breeds appeared equally attractive to stable flies. With or without stable flies, the Brahman-crossbred heifers consistently gained less weight than the English x Exotic heifers by 0.24 kg/d (15%).  相似文献

We measured the effect of duration of feed quality restriction and the consequent compensatory growth on body dimensions in 18 crossbred Swifter (Texel sire x Flemish dam) male lambs born in March 1994 and weaned at approximately 2 mo of age. The lambs were fed grass straw (46 g CP/kg DM) for ad libitum consumption and 35 g CP x kg(-75) x d(-1) mixed concentrates (173 g/kg DM). At approximately 3.5 mo of age and average live weight of approximately 34 kg, the lambs were allotted to six blocks, each block with three lambs of approximately the same live weight. Within each block, the three lambs were then randomly assigned to two restricted treatments (R1 and R2) and a control (C) treatment. In treatments R1 and R2, feed quality was restricted by withholding concentrates for 3 and 4.5 mo, respectively. A growth model was developed to study the effects of restriction and subsequent compensation after realimentation (6.5 and 8 mo for R1 and R2 groups, respectively). During restriction, live weight and growth in body dimensions were suppressed. Bone length measures such as body length and ulna length were less affected than live weight. The response in testes girth to restriction was almost immediate. At the end of the experiment (age of about 14 mo), R1 animals fully compensated. However, the R1 animals had higher testes girth (P < .001), chest girth (P < .01), and chest depth (P < .05). Extending the duration of feed restriction did not have a significant effect on the rate of losses in live weight and body dimensions during restriction. At the end of the experiment, except for withers height and trunk length, the R2 animals did not compensate fully in live weight and other dimensions. However, the parameter estimates suggested that the R2 animals may need a relatively longer period of realimentation to reach to the same size as R1 and C animals.  相似文献

Accurate estimates of body weight can be useful in the evaluations of feeding programs, nutritional status and general health, and in calculation of dose levels (such as for anesthesia)-thus providing a valuable tool for captive elephant management. We used body measurements of 75 Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) to predict body weight. Weight, heart girth, height at the withers, body length, and foot-pad circumference were measured. All possible linear regressions of weight on one, two, three, or four body measurements were calculated. The highest correlation with a single measurement was that between heart girth and weight (R2 = 0.90). The data were also divided into age groups (1-13, 18-28, 29-39, and 40-57 yr), and all possible linear regressions were calculated for each group (there were no elephants aged 14-17 yr). Adding body length or pad circumference to heart girth resulted in a slight increase in R2. We conclude that body weight in Asian elephants can be predicted from body measurements and that heart girth is the best predictor. A second body measurement might improve predictive accuracy for some age groups.  相似文献

A 2 x 3 factorial arrangement of treatments was used to elucidate the mechanism(s) by which prenatal androgenization improves postnatal rate and efficiency of growth and composition of gain in beef heifers. Fifteen control (C) and 15 prenatally androgenized (PA) Angus x Simmental heifers (prenatal treatment, Pretrt) received no (N), estrogen (E), or estrogen and testosterone (ET) implants postnatally (postnatal treatment, Posttrt) to evaluate whether the postpubertal growth response after prenatal androgenization could be induced in prepubertal heifers. Blood was collected from the heifers at 6 +/- 1, 9 +/- 1, and 12 +/- 1 mo of age and analyzed from serum concentrations of growth hormone (GH), IGF-I, IGF-II, insulin, thyroxine (T4), and triiodothyronine (T3). Season of the year had a greater effect on hormone concentrations than either Pretrt or Posttrt, and there were no Pretrt x Posttrt interactions. Prenatal treatment, PA, had no effect on GH; however, Posttrt E and ET increased (P < .001) GH concentrations. Prenatal treatment, PA, increased (P < .05) IGF-I concentrations, and there was a nonsignificant increase (P = .11) in IGF-I concentrations with Posttrt E and ET. Concentrations of IGF-II were unaffected by Pretrt PA; however, they were lower (P < .01) in the Posttrt E and ET groups. Insulin, T4, T3, BW, and ADG were not affected by Pretrt and Posttrt. Concentrations of GH and IGF-I were increased in heifers that received Pretrt PA and(or) Posttrt E and ET in a manner to support improved growth performance; however, BW and ADG were similar. In prepubertal beef heifers, factors in addition to increased GH and IGF-I seem to be necessary for improved growth performance.  相似文献

The effect of three rates of gain on carcass composition, lipid partitioning, age and BW at puberty, and concentrations of growth hormone (GH), IGF-I, insulin, glucose, and NEFA in plasma were evaluated in 38 Angus x Hereford heifers. Heifers were allotted by BW and age to three treatments with a replication in each of 2 yr: full-fed (n = 13; FF) to gain 1.36 kg/d; limit-fed (n = 12; LF) to gain .68 kg/d; maintenance-full-fed (n = 13; MFF) to gain .23 kg/d for 16 wk, then full-fed to gain 1.36 kg/d. Heifers were slaughtered within 10 d after the onset of puberty. At slaughter, kidney, pelvic, and heart fat (KPH) and udder (UDDER) were separated from carcass, as was fat surrounding viscera (OM). After 48 h at 4 degrees C a carcass side was dissected into subcutaneous fat (SC), intermuscular fat (SEAM), soft tissue (SFT = inseparable lean and fat), LEAN, and BONE. In yr 1, LF heifers (431 d) were older (P < .05) than MFF heifers (371 d) at puberty, but age of FF heifers (389 d) did not differ (P > .10) from that of LF and MFF heifers. In yr 2, FF heifers (351 d) were younger (P < .05) than LF and MFF heifers (398 and 434 d, respectively). The FF heifers had greater (P < .05) BW and a greater (P < .01) percentage of lipid in the carcass at puberty than LF and MFF heifers. During the first 16 wk of treatment, concentrations of NEFA were greater in heifers with slower daily gains (MFF > LF > FF; P < .01). Concentrations of NEFA were lesser and concentrations of IGF-I and insulin were greater in plasma of FF than in that of MFF heifers during the 10 wk before puberty. Treatment significantly altered age, BW, carcass composition, and lipid partitioning at puberty in beef heifers. We conclude that the percentage of body fat is not the sole regulator of puberty, and age may be an important modulator in determining the onset of puberty in beef heifers.  相似文献

Data on the reproductive traits of dairy heifers were analyzed using event-time techniques. Traits analyzed were age at first calving (n = 4631), days to first breeding, and days open (n = 1992) during the first lactation. A proportional hazard model was used that included fixed effects of herd-year, year-season, breed type, herd weight, and heifer weight. Body weights were recorded at 390 d of age, on average. The model for days open and days to first breeding included two additional fixed effects of herd and heifer milk yield at 100 d. A significant effect of heifer weight category on age at first calving was found. The chance of calving was consistently higher for herds and heifers with higher body weight at 390 d and decreased linearly from the top to the lowest quartiles. The effects of herd weight category on days to first breeding and days open were significant. Heifers in herds with a higher average body weight were less likely to be bred, and heifers in herds with lower average body weight were less likely to get pregnant. The effect of heifer weight category on days to first breeding or days open was not significant. The effect of herd milk yield on days to first breeding was significant. Heifers in herds with lower yield were more likely to be bred. The effect of heifer milk yield category on days to first breeding and days open was significant, but no linear trend was found for the estimates of the hazard ratios. The chance of a heifer being bred and becoming pregnant was similar among the first three quartiles and was lower for heifers in the lowest quartile. The probability of a heifer reaching a first calving can be improved by increasing the body weight at 390 d. Body weight at 390 d did not appear to have a large effect on reproductive performance after first calving. High milk yield appears not to have a large negative effect on days open, at least for the milk yield levels analyzed in this study.  相似文献

The susceptibility of two common breeds of cattle in the Pyrenees, Brown Swiss and Pyrenean breed, to parasitism by gastrointestinal nematodes was studied. Twenty-two female calves (13 Brown Swiss and 9 Pyrenean), 3 months old with a mean weight of 112.8 +/- 18.33 and 103.3 +/- 17.11 kg respectively at the start of the study, were used. The calves began their first grazing season grazing with 200 cattle following the traditional grazing system for mountainous areas: Stabling during winter (December-April), grazing on harvesting meadows at an elevation of 900 m in the spring (May-June) and autumn (October-November), and grazing areas between 1200-2100 m during the summer (July-September). Faeces, blood samples and calves growth rate were taken at 2-week intervals throughout the grazing season. Faecal egg counts of gastrointestinal nematodes, level of serum pepsinogen, total serum protein and blood parameters were measured. The worm egg counts and Cooperia sp. counts were significantly smaller in the calves of Pyrenean breed than in Brown Swiss throughout the experiment. Numbers of eggs of the other genera of parasites found were smaller in the calves of Pyrenean breed than in calves of Brown Swiss breed, but no statistical differences were found. Blood was compared during two periods: the prepatent and patent periods. During the first period, no differences were found between the breeds for any parameter studied. However, during the patent period, Pyrenean animals had significantly greater numbers of erythrocytes, haemoglobin values and packed cell volume (PCV) values, and smaller numbers of eosinophils than animals of the Brown Swiss breed. No differences were found in the level of serum pepsinogen, total serum protein and live weight gains between the two breeds.  相似文献

Three studies were designed using a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments within each experiment to evaluate the effects of various management techniques on growth and carcass traits of once-calved heifers. In Exp. 1, 33 yearling (16 control [C] and 17 prenatally androgenized [PA]) and 39 once-calved (20 C and 19 PA) nonpregnant heifers were used to evaluate the effects of age and PA. Once-calved heifers were approximately 31 kg heavier (P < .03) on-test, initially consumed 11% more (P < .01) DM, and gained 11% faster (P < .08), but had similar (P = .44) gain to feed ratios (.138 vs. .131) as yearlings. Growth performance was not affected by PA. The yearling and once-calved heifers were then slaughtered at approximately 707 and 1,080 d of age, respectively. Despite maturity differences (P < .01), marbling scores (P = .26) and percentage of choice carcasses (P = .27) were similar. However, on the basis of newly accepted grading changes, percentage of once-calved heifer carcasses grading choice decreased from 57.3 to 34.4%. Organoleptic properties did not differ. Experiments 2 and 3 were then conducted to evaluate effects of commercially available products (melengestrol acetate [MGA] and Synovex-H) on feedlot characteristics of heifers following weaning of their first calf. In Exp. 2, 48 once-calved Simmental-based heifers were fed during the summer to a constant compositional fat thickness of .8 cm. Experiment 3 was conducted in the late fall and early winter, during which 52 moderately sized heifers were fed for 116 d postweaning and slaughtered. Performance of heifers in Exp. 2 was not affected by MGA. However, heifers fed MGA in Exp. 3 gained 9% faster (P < .05) than controls. In Exp. 2, Synovex-H tended to improve ADG (P < .09) and feed efficiency (P < .07), but did not affect performance in Exp. 3. Most carcass traits were not affected by either treatment. Nonpregnant, once-calved heifers seem to have a large capacity for efficient weight gain as compared with yearling heifers. However, hormonal compounds, such as testosterone propionate provided pre- or postnatally (Synovex-H), and MGA do not appear to provide the consistent, positive responses often seen with younger, more typical feedlot heifers.  相似文献

Three trials with 156 crossbred heifers were used to determine the effects of dietary energy and bovine somatotropin administration on subsequent heifer productivity. In Trial 1, heifer calves were weaned from their dams (n = 28; 113 +/- 13 d of age) and assigned to a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of moderate (MDE) or high dietary energy (HDE) and injections of vehicle (VEH) or 250 mg of bovine somatotropin (bST) every 14 d. Heifer calves in Trial 2 (n = 28; 123 +/- 20 d of age) and Trial 3 (n = 100; 134 +/- 22 d of age) nursed their dams while grazing pasture and received no creep feed (MDE) or ad libitum access to creep feed (HDE) and received VEH or bST as in Trial 1. Treatments were administered for 112 d and heifers within trial were managed alike after that time. There were no dietary treatment x bST treatment interactions for any of the variables analyzed (P > .05). Dietary energy did not affect daily gain in Trial 1; however, heifers receiving HDE in Trials 2 and 3 had greater weight, hip height growth, and fat thickness (P < .01) by the end of the treatment period. Treatment with bST increased gain in Trials 1 and 2 (P < .01) but did not affect growth in Trial 3. There were trends in all trials for HDE to reduce age at puberty (P < .15), but there were no consistent effects of bST on reproductive measures. Mammary gland composition and milk production were unaffected by treatment in Trial 1. In Trial 2, HDE decreased subsequent milk production, calf weaning weight, and mammary dry fat free tissue and DNA (P < .05). Treatment with bST in Trial 3 tended (P = .08) to result in greater milk production and increased calf weaning weights (P < .05). We conclude that bST treatment may enhance growth with no effect on reproduction. Treatment with bST did not overcome deleterious effects of HDE on milk production but may play an important role in mammogenesis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical utility of a new age-adjusted measure of body fat distribution (based on waist and hip circumferences) and stature, in relation to biochemical complications in obese children. DESIGN: Cross-sectional, clinical study. The formula to calculate the common standard deviation score (SDS) of waist-to-hip ratio/height (WHR/Ht) was obtained from the data of control children. The relationship between WHR/Ht SDS, as the age-adjusted measure, in obese children and their clinical laboratory data was evaluated. SUBJECTS: Outpatient obese Japanese children (102 boys and 75 girls) and control children (508 boys and 549 girls), ranging in age from 6-15 y. MEASUREMENTS: Height, body weight, waist girth, hip girth, triceps and subscapular skinfold thicknesses, as anthropometric measures. Percent overweight, percent body fat, waist girth, WHR and WHR/Ht SDS as criteria for obesity. Clinical laboratory analyses for fasting blood samples of obese children. RESULTS: The WHR/Ht SDS closely correlated with age in obese children, thus reflecting the progress of abdominal obesity during growth. The obese boys were more hyperlipidaemic than the girls were, although the percent overweight was similar in both genders. The percent overweight, percent body fat, waist girth and WHR/Ht SDS all correlated well with triglyceride (TG), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and insulin in boys, whereas only waist girth and WHR/Ht SDS showed a close correlation with TG and insulin in girls. The obese subjects were subdivided according to the number of abnormal values observed in TG, ALT and insulin. For obese boys, all five indices of obesity were higher in the groups with complications than in the group without. In the girls, only the WHR/Ht SDS constantly differed between subgroups. WHR/Ht SDS most obviously distinguished the groups with complications from the other group with a wide margin of difference (2-fold in boys and > 2-fold in girls) in the mean values. CONCLUSION: The WHR/Ht SDS can serve as an index predicting the occurrence of biochemical complications in obese children ranging from the age of 6-15 y.  相似文献

In the time between 1989 and 1991 seven Brown Swiss heifers, which had clinical signs of the Weaver syndrome were kept at the Bavarian Institute of Animal Breeding in Grub. This was in order to investigate this hereditary trait further. The number of animals carrying this genetic defect was increased by means of embryo transfer. Both cycle observations and ovary controls by means of rectal palpation resulted largely in physiological data and findings. All seven animals responded to superovulation treatment which was induced by sequential doses of p-FSH (32 mg) or of a single dose of 2,000 IU PMSG. The donors were flushed a total of 32 times without problem. On average 5.3 ova were recovered, 2.8 of which were viable and suitable for transfer. These are statistically only 50% of the normal value in a routine ET programme. Following the transfer of fresh and frozen embryos the pregnancy rate was 53%. There was only one abortion observed from 48 pregnancies.  相似文献

Five repeated cross-sectional serological surveys of 790 dairy cattle in 4 dairy herds between December 1985 and February 1987 provided an opportunity to study the changes in the seroprevalence of Haemophilus somnus across the 5 surveys and with respect to some demographic and disease variables. The demographic variables included were age (heifers or cows) and farm, representing two groups of herds (two herds in each group, located in the Central and Northern Valleys of California). The serological status of cattle as either negative or positive against H. somnus, Campylobacter fetus and Leptospira hardjo were determined with enzyme linked-immunosorbent assays. Logistic regression analysis was used to compute maximum likelihood estimates of adjusted odds ratios and their respective 95% confidence intervals. The baseline risk of being H. somnus seropositive in the cattle observed at first sampling did not vary significantly during the study period after adjustment for the effects of covariates. Only at first sampling were cows about twice as likely to be H. somnus seropositive than heifers. At samplings 1 and 3, but not at 2 and 5, being in the herds of the Central Valley appeared protective. In contrast, at sampling 4 the cattle in herds in the Central Valley were about 7 times more likely to be H. somnus seropositive. C. fetus-positive cattle were about 3 times more likely to be H. somnus seropositive at sampling 1 only. The relationship between H. somnus status and L. hardjo was not significant during the study period.  相似文献

Management factors in 36 Pacific Northwest dairy herds were evaluated for their association with the prevalence of Shiga toxin-positive Escherichia coli O157 (E. coli O157) in dairy cattle. The within-herd prevalence of E. coli O157 was estimated by bacteriological culture of fecal pat samples, collected monthly for 6 months (approximately 60 per visit), from heifer cattle. During the first visit to each farm, a management questionnaire was administered that covered a broad range of animal husbandry practices. On each subsequent visit, a brief questionnaire was administered to detect changes in management practices. A significantly higher prevalence of E. coli O157 was noted in herds that fed corn silage to heifers compared to herds that did not feed corn silage. More tentative associations of E. coli O157 prevalence were observed for weaning method, protein level of calf starter, feeding of ionophores in heifer rations, feeding of grain screens to heifers, and feeding of animal by-products to cows.  相似文献

A prospective cohort study was undertaken to determine calf-level factors that affect performance (growth) between birth and 14 months of age in a convenience sample of approximately 3300 female Holstein calves born in 1991 on two large Florida dairy farms. Data collected on each calf at birth included farm of origin, birth date, weight, height at the pelvis, and serum total protein (a measure of colostral immunoglobulin absorption). Birth season was dichotomized into summer and winter using meteorological data collected by University of Florida Agricultural Research Stations. Data collected at approximately 6 and 14 months of age included age, weight, height at the pelvis, and height at the withers. Growth in weight and stature (height) was calculated for each growth period; growth period 1 (GP1) = birth to 6 months, and growth period 2 (GP2) = 6 to 14 months. Health data collected included data of initial treatment and number of treatments for the diseases diarrhea, omphalitis, septicemia, pneumonia and keratoconjunctivitis. After adjusting for disease occurrence, passive transfer of colostral immunoglobulins had no significant effect on body weight gain or pelvic height growth. Season of birth and occurrence of diarrhea, septicemia and respiratory disease were significant variables decreasing heifer growth (height and weight) in GP1. These variables plus farm, birth weight and exact age when '6 month' data were collected explained 20% and 31% of the variation in body weight gain and pelvic height growth, respectively, in GP1. The number of days treated for pneumonia before 6 months of age significantly decreased average daily weight gain in GP2 (P < 0.025), but did not affect stature growth. Treatment for pneumonia after 6 months of age did not significantly affect weight or height gain after age 6 months. Neither omphalitis nor keratoconjunctivitis explained variability in growth in either of the growth periods.  相似文献

Rapid growth large frame (RL, n = 61) or average growth medium frame (AM, n = 71) biotype heifers fed to achieve either moderate (MOD, .6 kg/d) or high ADG (HI, 1.0 kg/d) were used to determine whether puberty occurs at similar body composition or metabolic status. A heifer was considered pubertal after being detected in estrus and then forming a functional corpus luteum. Live animal estimates of body composition and blood samples for assessment of metabolic status were taken at 13 +/- .2 d after estrus for all heifers. Body composition and metabolic status were assessed every 56 d from 7 mo of age until puberty in a subset of 80 heifers representing all biotype-diet combinations. At puberty, 32 of these 80 heifers were slaughtered and physical and chemical composition of the empty body were determined. High-gain diet heifers were younger, heavier, taller, and more muscular (all P < .01) at puberty than MOD heifers. Slaughter measurements paralleled live animal estimates; bodies of HI and RL heifers contained more (P < .01) carcass and noncarcass components than those of MOD and AM heifers, respectively. Carcasses of RL and HI heifers were more (P < .05) muscular and fatter than AM and MOD heifers. At puberty, HI heifers had a greater (P < .01) mass of moisture, fat, and fat-free organic matter (FFOM) than MOD, whereas RL heifers had more moisture, ash, and FFOM than AM. Percentage of fat was greater (22.1 +/- 1.0 vs 1.0 vs 19.1 +/- 1.0; P < .05) and percentage of moisture was less (55.4 +/- .6 vs 58.1 +/- .6; P < .01) in bodies of HI than in those of MOD heifers. Concentrations of blood urea nitrogen and insulin were greater (P < .05) in HI than in MOD heifers. Diet did not influence concentration of IGF-I or glucose, and metabolic markers were unaffected by biotype. No dramatic changes in body composition or metabolic signals were detected before puberty. Puberty did not occur at similar body composition or metabolic status in all heifers.  相似文献

Gestation length, unassisted calving percentage, perinatal mortality, calf crop weaned (survival from birth to weaning), birth weight, and 200-d weaning weight of 2,597 calves born and 2,433 calves weaned are reported for F1 crosses resulting from matings of Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Pinzgauer, Shorthorn, Galloway, Longhorn, Nellore, Piedmontese, and Salers sires to Angus and Hereford dams (> or = 3 yr of age) in Cycle IV of the Germplasm Evaluation (GPE) Program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. Hereford and Angus sires included 1) reference sires born from 1963 to 1971 used in previous cycles of the GPE Program, 2) sires born from 1982 to 1985 (1980s), and 3) sires born from 1983 to 1985 used in natural service clean-up matings. Effects of sire breed of calf were significant for gestation length, unassisted calving percentage, birth weight, and 200-d weaning weight. Gestation length was significantly longer for Nellore than for Charolais, Galloway, Longhorn, Piedmontese, and Salers, which were in turn longer than for Hereford-Angus and Shorthorn. Rankings for birth weight tended to be inversely related to those for calving ease, except for Shorthorn and Salers sires, which required low assistance relative to their heavy birth weights. Rankings for 200-d weight among AI-sired progeny were as follows: Charolais (231.3), Nellore (229.7), Salers (225.5), Shorthorn (223.8), 1980s Hereford-Angus (223.1), Piedmontese (220.0), Galloway (209.5), reference Hereford-Angus (210.1), and Longhorn (199.0); differences > or = 6.5 kg were significant.  相似文献
