Feed efficiency measures, gross energy (solids-corrected milk/estimated energy intake), N (milk N/N intake) utilization, and apparent digestibilities of ration dry matter and N were calculated for 34 daughters of 21 Holstein and 29 daughters of 18 Jersey sires in first and second trimesters of lactation. Cows were studied in N balance trials and were fed ad libitum corn silage-based, complete rations formulated to meet average nutrient requirements. The objective was to determine whether these breeds differ in rates of converting dietary protein or energy to milk protein or milk energy. Holstein and Jersey did not differ for digestibility of ration dry matter in either trimester of lactation. They also converted dietary protein to milk protein at similar rates. Energy efficiencies of Holstein and Jersey did not differ in first trimester, but Holstein exceeded Jersey in second trimester. Because intake of dry matter by Jersey increased about 4% from first to second trimester (opposite of Holstein) and N balance was higher than for Holstein, Jersey cows may have been repleting more adipose tissue. We suggest no comparative advantage for Jersey in spite of higher ratios of milk to body weight and feed intake less than Holstein.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate feces, urine, and N excretion by Jersey and Holstein cows. Sixteen multiparous cows (n = 8 per breed) were fed 2 experimental rations at calving in a switchback experimental design. Diets were 50% forage and based on corn meal (control) or whole cottonseed. Half the cows in each breed started on the control diet and half started on the whole cottonseed diet. Cows were switched to the other diet at 60 d in milk and switched back to their original diet at 165 d in milk. Pairs of cows were moved into open-circuit respiration chambers on d 49, 154, and 271 of lactation for 7-d measurement periods. While in the chambers, total collection of feed refusals, milk, recovered hair, feces, and urine was conducted. No effect of the interaction of diet and breed was observed for measures of nutrient digestibility and manure excretion. Total daily manure excretion was lower in Jersey cows than in Holstein cows, with reductions generally proportional to changes in feed intake. Jersey cows consumed 29% less feed and excreted 33% less wet feces and 28% less urine than Holstein cows. Intake, fecal, and urinary N were reduced by 29, 33, and 24%, respectively, in Jersey cows compared with Holstein cows. Equations from American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers underpredicted observed values for all manure measures evaluated (urine, manure solids, N, wet manure), and breed bias was observed in equations predicting excretion of urine, N, and wet manure. Although these equations include animal and dietary factors, intercepts of regression of observed values on predicted values differed between Holsteins and Jerseys for those 3 measures. No breed bias was observed in the prediction of manure solids excretion, however, making that equation equally appropriate for Jerseys and Holsteins. The effect of breed on manure and nutrient excretion has significant nutrient management implications.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted using 14 multiparous Holstein and 14 multiparous Jersey cows to determine if dry matter intake (DMI), specifically the decline in prepartum DMI and plasma parameters differed between breeds. Cows were blocked by expected calving date and received a dry cow total mixed ration (15% crude protein and 39% neutral detergent fiber) beginning 30 d before expected calving date. At calving, cows were switched to a lactation total mixed ration (17% crude protein and 33% neutral detergent fiber). Data were collected from d 23 prepartum to d 1 postpartum. Body weight was greater for Holsteins compared with Jerseys, but body condition score did not differ between breeds. Dry matter intake decreased for both Holsteins and Jerseys as parturition approached. The interaction of breed × day prepartum was significant for DMI with the magnitude of depression being greater for Holsteins compared with Jerseys. Plasma glucose and β-hydroxy-butyrate was similar between breeds. Plasma nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) were similar for the two breeds up to d 5 prepartum, but greater for Holsteins compared with Jerseys thereafter. The decline in prepartum DMI was positively correlated to plasma NEFA for Holsteins, but not for Jerseys. These results indicate that breed differences exist for the decline in prepartum DMI and plasma NEFA. In addition, these data show an association between prepartum DMI depression and plasma NEFA but do not suggest a causal relationship.  相似文献

Reproductive status of Holstein and Jersey cows in the United States   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Reproductive information since 1995 from the USDA national dairy database was used to calculate yearly Holstein and Jersey means for days to first breeding after calving (DFB), 70-d nonreturn rate, conception rate (CR), number of breedings per lactation (NB), interval between first and last breedings during the lactation, days to last breeding after calving (DLB), pregnancy rate (PR), calving interval (CI), and interval between consecutive breedings. Data were from nearly 20 million breedings during >8 million lactations of >5 million cows in >23,000 herds. Means were also calculated for some traits by parity and breeding number for both breeds and by geographical region and synchronization status for Holsteins. The DFB declined for Holsteins from 92 d in 1996 to 85 d in 2007; the trend in yearly differences was not as consistent for Jerseys. First- and all-breeding 70-d nonreturn rate declined 5 to 9 percentage units over time. First- and all-breeding CR declined 2 to 4 percentage units. The DFB were longer for later parities of Holsteins than for early parities. Second- and third-breeding CR were sometimes 1 to 2 percentage units above first-breeding CR for Holsteins but lower (1 to 7 percentage units) for Jerseys. The CR within breeding number declined across parities for both breeds. The NB increased by 0.3 to 0.4 breedings over time but remained constant (2.5 or 2.6 breedings) across parities for Holsteins and increased (from 2.2 to 2.4 breedings) for Jerseys. Holstein DFB were fewest in the Northwest (78 d) and greatest in the Mountain region (92 d). Regional CR was highest for the Northeast and Southwest (33%) and lowest for the Southeast (26%); NB was fewest for the Northeast (2.3) and greatest for the Southeast (2.7). Mean DLB was fewest for the Southwest (127 d) and greatest for the Mountain region (157 d); CI was shortest for the Southwest (406 d) and longest for the Mideast (434 d). Mean PR was highest for the Southwest (28.3%) and lowest for the Mideast and Southeast (22.2%). Use of timed artificial insemination following synchronized estrus appears to have reduced DFB, lowered CR, and increased NB while reducing DLB and CI. However, synchronized breeding was not a primary cause of Holstein regional differences for reproductive traits. Since 2002, phenotypic performance for CR, DLB, and CI as well as genetic merit for daughter PR have stopped their historical declines and started to improve.  相似文献

The objective of this observational study was to describe and compare the dynamics of reason-specific culling risk for the genetic groups Jerseys (JE), Holsteins (HO), and Jersey × Holstein crossbreds (JH), considering parity, stage of lactation, and milk yield, among other variables, in large multibreed dairy herds in Texas. The secondary objective was to analyze the association between survival and management factors, such as breeding and replacement policies, type of facilities, and use of cooling systems. After edits, available data included 202,384 lactations in 16 herds, ranging from 407 to 8,773 cows calving per year during the study period from 2007 to 2011. The distribution of lactation records by genetic group was 58, 36, and 6% for HO, JE, and JH crosses, respectively. Overall culling rates across breeds were 30.1, 32.1, and 35.0% for JH, JE, and HO, respectively. The dynamics of reason-specific culling were dependent on genetic group, parity, stage of lactation, milk yield, and herd characteristics. Early lactation was a critical period for “died” and “injury-sick” culling. The risk increased with days after calving for “breeding” and, in the case of HO, “low production” culling. Open cows had a 3.5 to 4.6 times greater risk for overall culling compared with pregnant cows. The odds of culling with reason “died” within the first 60 d in milk (DIM) were not significantly associated with genetic group. However, both JE and JH crosses had lower odds of live culling within the first 60 DIM compared with HO cows (OR = 0.72 and 0.82, respectively). Other cow variables significantly associated with the risk of dying within the first 60 DIM were cow relative 305-d mature equivalent (305ME) milk yield, parity, and season of calving. Significant herd-related variables for death included herd size and origin of replacements. In addition to genetic group, the risk of live culling within 60 DIM was associated with cow-relative 305ME milk yield, parity, and season of calving. Significant herd-related variables for live culling included herd-relative 305ME milk yield, herd size, type of facility, origin of replacement, and type of maternity. Overall, reason-specific culling followed similar patterns across DIM in the 3 genetic groups.  相似文献

Fatty acid composition of plasma triacylglycerides and milk fat was analyzed from Holstein and Jersey cows with control or depleted copper status and fed roasted whole soybeans or tallow. Conjugated linoleic acid in plasma was higher in Jersey cows. Dietary fat source influenced the proportions of all fatty acids in plasma and in milk, except for conjugated linoleic acid in milk. Feeding soybeans increased plasma C14:1, C18:0, C18:2, and conjugated linoleic acid, and decreased C14:0, C16:0, C16:1, and cis- and trans-C18:1 compared with feeding tallow. Low copper diets decreased C18:0 and increased cis- and trans-C18:1, and conjugated linoleic acid in plasma. A fat source x copper status interaction occurred for cis-C18:1 in plasma. Proportions of C4:0 to C14:0 were higher, and cis16:1, cis- and trans-C18:1, and conjugated linoleic acid were lower in milk fat of Jersey compared with Holstein cows. Generally, the effects of copper depletion were less apparent in milk than in plasma. Copper depletion increased C4:0, trans-C18:1, and conjugated linoleic acid, and decreased C16:1 in milk. Feeding whole soybeans increased C4:0 to C14:0, C18:0, C18:2, and C18:3, and decreased C14:1, C16:0, C16:1, and cis- and trans-C18:1 in milk. Breed x fat interactions occurred for C4:0, C14:1, C16:1, and conjugated linoleic acid in milk. Copper status x fat source interaction occurred for trans-C18:1. The breed x copper status interaction was apparent in milk fat for C16:1 and C18:0 and conjugated linoleic acid in milk. Both C18:0 and trans-C18:1 were desaturated by mammary tissue; however, whereas desaturation of C18:0 was linear, desaturation of trans-C18:1 reached a plateau that could have been caused by presence of the trans-10 isomer, which is not desaturated and was not separated from trans-11 C18:1 in our analysis. Comparison of the plasma triacylglycerol fatty acid profile with the milk fat profile was useful to interpret separate events of biohydrogenation in the rumen and desaturation by the mammary gland.  相似文献

Basic parameters are reported for free thyroxine and triiodothyronine in blood serum of dairy cattle. Free thyroxine ranged from a low of 1.47 ng/dl in the summer to 1.86 ng/dl in the spring and from 1.37 ng/dl in early lactation to 1.85 ng/dl in midlactation. The average free triiodothyronine went from a low of 2.98 pg/ml in winter to a high of 6.23 pg/ml in the fall and from 3.45 pg/ml in early lactation to 5.37 pg/ml in midlactation. The free fraction of the serum compared with the total fraction averaged .0267% for thyroxine and .291% for triiodothyronine. Free and total thyroxine were high in fall, low in winter, and intermediate in spring and summer. Free and total triiodothyronine showed a similar pattern with a greater magnitude in the variations. Even though the thyroid hormone secretion rate was higher in winter (earlier studies), increased tissue utilization kept serum concentrations low. Free and total thyroxine and triiodothyronine were low in early lactation due to high demands from peak milk production. Stage of lactation had a much greater influence on changes in serum thyroid hormones than did season.  相似文献

The onset of lactation results in a sudden irreversible loss of Ca for colostrum and milk synthesis. Some cows are unable to quickly adapt to this demand and succumb to clinical hypocalcemia, whereas a larger proportion of cows develop subclinical hypocalcemia that predisposes them to other peripartum diseases. The objective of this study was to perform a comprehensive genomic analysis of blood total Ca concentration in periparturient Holstein cows. We first performed a genomic scan and a subsequent gene-set analysis to identify candidate genes, biological pathways, and molecular mechanisms affecting postpartum Ca concentration. Then, we assessed the prediction of postpartum Ca concentration using genomic information. Data consisted of 7,691 records of plasma or serum concentrations of Ca measured in the first, second, and third day after parturition of 959 primiparous and 1,615 multiparous cows that calved between December 2015 and June 2020 in 2 dairy herds. All cows were genotyped with 80k SNPs. The statistical model included lactation (1 to 5+), calf category (male, females, twins), and day as fixed effects, and season-treatment-experiment, animal, and permanent environmental as random effects. Model predictive ability was evaluated using 10-fold cross-validation. Heritability and repeatability estimates were 0.083 (standard error = 0.017) and 0.444 (standard error = 0.028). The association mapping identified 2 major regions located on Bos taurus autosome (BTA)6 and BTA16 that explained 1.2% and 0.7% of additive genetic variance of Ca concentration, respectively. Interestingly, the region on BTA6 harbors the GC gene, which encodes the vitamin D binding protein, and the region on BTA16 harbors LRRC38, which is actively involved in K transport. Other sizable peaks were identified on BTA5, BTA2, BTA7, BTA14, and BTA9. These regions harbor genes associated with Ca channels (CACNA1S, CRACR2A), K channels (KCNK9), bone remodeling (LRP6), and milk production (SOCS2). The gene-set analysis revealed terms related to vitamin transport, calcium ion transport, calcium ion binding, and calcium signaling. Genomic predictions of phenotypic and genomic estimated breeding values of Ca concentration yielded predictive correlations up to 0.50 and 0.15, respectively. Overall, the present study contributes to a better understanding of the genetic basis of postpartum blood Ca concentration in Holstein cows. In addition, the findings may contribute to the development of novel selection and management strategies for reducing periparturient hypocalcemia in dairy cattle.  相似文献

The relationship between ovarian activity and milk yield was studied in 35 daughters of 24 Holstein sires and 17 daughters of 14 Jersey sires in the same herd. Ovulations and length of estrous cycles were determined by progesterone concentration in postmilking strippings three times per week, by weekly palpation per rectum, and by twice daily estrus detection. Transmitting abilities were for 4% fat-corrected milk of cows and their sires. Yields of 4% fat-corrected milk were estimated for 60, 90, 120, and 305 days in lactation. Postpartum intervals to first ovulation averaged 22 and 20 days for Holsteins and Jerseys, but the interval to first standing estrus was shorter for Jersey than for Holstein. Postpartum intervals to each of the first three ovulations and length of estrous cycles were unrelated to actual yield or transmitting ability for yield of 4% fat-corrected milk in either breed. The percentage of cows observed in standing estrus at each of the first three ovulations increased from 23 to 43%.  相似文献

Holstein (n = 19) and Jersey (n = 18) cows were used to study effects of two feeding systems on fatty acid composition of milk. Confinement cows were fed a total mixed ration with corn silage and alfalfa silage and pastured cows grazed a crabgrass (90%) and clover (10%) pasture and were allowed 5.5 kg of grain per head daily. Two milk samples were collected from each cow at morning and afternoon milkings 1 d each week for four consecutive weeks in June and July 1998. One set of milk samples was analyzed to determine fatty acid composition, and the second set was used for crude protein and total fat analyses. Data were analyzed by the general linear models procedure of SAS, using a split-plot model with breed, treatment, and breed x treatment as main effects and time of sampling and week as subplot effects along with appropriate interactions. Milk from pastured cows was higher than milk from confinement cows for the cis-9, trans-11 octadecadienoic acid isomer of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Also, milk from Holsteins was higher than milk from Jerseys for C16:1, C18:1, and CLA and lower than Jerseys for C6:0, C8:0, C10:0, C12:0, and C14:0. Several treatment x week interactions existed, but main effects were still important; for example, proportions of CLA in milk of grazed cows were relatively constant across weeks (0.66, 0.64, 0.64, and 0.69% +/- 0.02%, respectively), but the CLA in milk of confinement cows increased in wk 4 (0.35, 0.31, 0.31, and 0.48% +/- 0.02% for wk 1 to 4, respectively). There are potentially important differences in fatty acid composition of milk from cows consuming a warm season pasture species compared with milk from cows consuming a total mixed ration, as well as differences between Holstein and Jersey breeds.  相似文献

The rate and extent of estimated energy mobilization and the relationship between fat depth at the rib and thurl and body condition score (BCS) were investigated in Jersey and Holstein cows in early lactation. Twenty-six cows were paired by breed, parity, and calving date, and were individually fed a total mixed ration ad libitum from parturition through 120 d in milk. Feed intake and milk production were measured daily; body weight (BW), BCS, subcutaneous fat depth, milk composition, and concentration of plasma nonesterified fatty acids were measured every 2 wk. Estimated tissue energy balance (TEB) was calculated using 1989 NRC equations. Net energy intake was greater in early lactation for Holsteins compared with Jerseys, 37.8 and 28.2 Mcal/d, respectively. Milk energy was greater for Holsteins relative to Jerseys, 30.5 versus 21.2 Mcal/d. Fat depth and BCS did not differ between breeds. A positive relationship existed between fat depth and BCS for Jerseys; however, there was no significant relationship for Holsteins. The best-fit regression model for predicting TEB for Holsteins and Jerseys in early lactation included week of lactation, milk composition, and BCS. Jerseys remained in negative TEB for a shorter period of time relative to Holsteins. The TEB nadir was -6.19 and -12.9 Mcal/d, for Jerseys and Holsteins, respectively. Expressed as a proportion of metabolic BW (BW(0.75)), net energy intake did not differ between breeds, yet milk energy and estimated tissue energy loss were greater for Holsteins compared with Jerseys.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to assess the relationship between urinary nitrogen excretion (UN, g/d) and milk urea nitrogen concentration (MUN, mg/dl) and whether the types of carbohydrates fed interacts with the dietary CP and the breed (size) of cows to affect this relationship. Eight multiparous cows (four Holstein and four Jersey) were fed four different diets in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of levels of crude protein (13 and 17%) and levels of neutral detergent fiber (30 and 40%). The experimental design was a split plot Latin square with breeds forming the main plots and diets forming the subplots. Experimental periods were 3 wk in length, with d 1 to 14 used for adjustment and d 15 to 19 used for a total collection of urine and feces. Crude protein concentrations had a significant effect on milk, milk fat and protein production, plasma urea N, MUN, and on N balance measurements (N intake, fecal and urinary N excretion, milk N production, N retention, apparent N digestibility, and N efficiency). Neutral detergent fiber levels had no effect on any production parameters or N balance measurements. The relationship between urinary N and MUN was linear over the range of MUN values observed and different for the two breeds. The breed effect on the UN-MUN relationship was no longer significant (P = 0.63) when body weight (BW) was included in the model. The optimal allometric coefficient for BW was 0.96 and was not different from 1.0. Therefore, the following equation is proposed to predict UN excretion based on MUN and BW: UN (g/d) = 0.0259 (+/- 0.0006) BW (kg) x MUN (mg/dl).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare the reproductive performance, milk production, live weight, and body condition loss during early lactation of purebred Holstein (H) cows to Jersey × H (J × H) crossbred cows in 4 Victorian herds. Cows of H and J × H breeding were managed together within each herd, and all herds had a seasonally concentrated calving pattern that commenced in early spring (July). All crossbred cows included in the study were 25, 50, or 75% H and were considered collectively as J × H regardless of the sire and dam breeds used to reach those percentages. Each herd owner provided records of reproductive performance and milk production. Compared with H cows, J × H cows had higher first-service conception rates (52 vs. 42%), higher percentages confirmed pregnant by 6 (68 vs. 54%) and 14 wk (86 vs. 78%) after the first day of inseminating, and lower final not-in-calf rates (11 vs. 16%); however, these differences were not observed in all herds. A random selection of H and J × H cows had body condition assessed on 3 occasions between the start of calving and the first day of the artificial insemination program. The selected cows were also weighed on the final occasion. Overall, body condition scores were slightly higher for J × H cows than for H cows, but changes in body condition score between calving and the start of inseminating were similar between breed groups. The H cows were 40 kg heavier than J × H cows and had daily milk yields in early lactation that were 2.2 kg higher. Daily yields of milk fat and protein did not differ between H and J × H cows during the study period. The improved reproductive performance of J × H cows compared with H cows may render them more suitable for use in dairy herds with seasonally concentrated calving patterns. Their improved reproductive performance was not associated with differences in condition loss in early lactation.  相似文献

Milk fat from Jersey cows contains less oleic acid (cis-C18:1) and more short- and medium-chain fatty acids than does milk fat from Holstein cows. The objective of this experiment was to determine responses in milk fat composition when Jersey and Holstein cows were fed diets either high (37% of dry matter) or low (27% of dry matter) in content of nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) and supplemented with either 0 or 2.5% (of dry matter) of a mostly saturated fat source. Four Holstein cows and four Jersey cows were used in a Latin square design with 28-d periods; diets were in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Fat supplementation decreased contents of fatty acids synthesized de novo within the mammary gland and increased contents of C18:0 and cis-C18:1. Low-NSC diets tended to increase C16:0 and to decrease C18:0, cis-C18:1, and C18:3. Despite the differences in fatty acid composition between breeds, both breeds generally responded similarly to dietary treatments. An interaction of breed and fat indicated that the content of cis-C18:1 in milk fat was increased more by supplemental fat in Holsteins than in Jerseys. Interactions of breed x fat and breed x carbohydrate type showed that the ratio of cis-C18:1 to C18:0 decreased when Jerseys were supplemented with fat but increased for Holsteins, and decreased when Jerseys were fed the low-NSC diet but increased when Holsteins were fed low NSC. The data are consistent with the hypothesis (Beaulieu and Palmquist, 1995, J. Dairy Sci. 78:1336-1344) that mammary activity of stearoyl-coenzyme A desaturase is lower in Jerseys than in Holsteins.  相似文献

This 4-yr study examined total lactation performance of dairy cows in two feeding systems: pasture-based and confinement. Spring and fall calving herds were used and each seasonal herd had 36 cows on pasture and 36 cows in confinement with 282 Holstein and 222 Jersey cows included over seven seasonal replicates. Pasture-fed cows received variable amounts of grain and baled haylage depending upon pasture availability. Confinement cows received a total mixed ration with corn silage as the primary forage. Data were collected on milk production, feed costs, and other costs. Pasture-fed cows produced 11.1% less milk than confinement cows. Across treatments, Jerseys produced 23.3% less milk than Holsteins, but calving season and various interactions were not significant. Feed costs averaged $0.95/cow per day lower for pastured cows than confinement cows. Feed costs were lower for Jerseys than Holsteins and for cows calving in spring. Income over feed costs averaged $7.05 +/- 0.34 for confinement Holsteins, $6.89 +/- 0.34 for pastured Holsteins, $5.68 +/- 0.34 for confinement Jerseys, and $5.36 +/- 0.34 for pastured Jerseys; effects of breed were significant but treatment, season, and interactions were not. Economic factors such as labor for animal care, manure handling, forage management, and cow culling rates favored pastured cows. Higher fertility and lower mastitis among Jerseys partially offsets lower income over feed cost compared with Holsteins. Milk production was lower in this study for pasture-based systems but lower feed costs, lower culling costs, and other economic factors indicate that pasture-based systems can be competitive with confinement systems.  相似文献

Diet digestibility and rate of passage, eating and rumination behavior, dry matter intake (DMI), and lactation performance were compared in 6 Jersey and 6 Holstein multiparous cows. Cows were fed gestation diets according to body weight (BW) beginning 7 wk before expected calving and ad libitum amounts of a lactation diet postpartum. Diet digestibility and rate of passage were measured in 5-d periods at wk 5 prepartum and wk 6 and 14 of lactation. Eating and ruminating behavior was measured over 5-d periods at wk 5 and 2 prepartum and wk 2, 6, 10, and 14 of lactation. Milk yield and DMI were higher in Holsteins, but milk energy output per kilogram of metabolic BW (BW0.75) and intake capacity (DMI/kg of BW) did not differ between breeds. Holsteins spent longer ruminating per day compared with Jerseys, but daily eating time did not differ between breeds. Jerseys spent more time eating and ruminating per unit of ingested feed. The duration and number of meals consumed did not differ between breeds, but the meals consumed by Jerseys were distributed more evenly throughout each 24-h period, providing a more regular supply of feed to the rumen. Feed passed through the digestive tract more quickly in Jerseys compared with Holsteins, suggesting particle breakdown and rumen outflow were faster in Jerseys, but this may also reflect the relative size of their digestive tract. Neutral detergent fiber digestibility was greater in Jerseys, despite the shorter rumen retention time, but digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, starch, and N did not differ between breeds. Utilization of digested N for tissue retention was higher at wk 5 prepartum and lower at wk 14 of lactation in Jerseys. In contrast to numerous published studies, intake capacity of Jerseys was not higher than that of Holsteins, but in the present study, cows were selected on the basis of equal expected milk energy yield per kilogram of metabolic BW. The objective of this 5-wk study was to determine dietary effects on plasma concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), as well as milk production and milk components in pasture-fed dairy cows. Thirty-two Holstein cows 4 to 5 wk postpartum were randomly assigned to 4 dietary subgroups. Feed was provided twice daily ad libitum at 0900 and 1600 h composed of fresh-cut pasture, meadow hay, and pelleted cereal grain to achieve differing levels of DMI and ME density (LL: 16.6 kg of DMI and 174 MJ of ME; HL: 17.3 kg of DMI and 181.1 MJ of ME; LH: 15.4 kg of DMI and 183.1 MJ of ME; HH: 17.9 kg of DMI and 213.3 MJ of ME, with the first letter indicating DMI and the second ME, and with H indicating high and L indicating low, respectively). The first day cows were placed on their diets was designated d 0. Concentrations of IGF-I were measured in frozen-thawed samples of plasma using a verified ELISA. Dietary treatment had affected plasma concentrations of IGF-I by d 7 with cows on high ME diets having greater IGF-I concentrations at d 14 (83.7 vs. 45.6 ng/mL) than cows on the low ME diets. The level of DMI had less effect on plasma concentrations of IGF-I at d 14 (72.2 vs. 57.1 ng/mL). Dietary treatment effects on these concentrations had stabilized by d 21. Day-to-day variation in mean plasma concentrations of IGF-I within each dietary treatment was low during an intensive period of daily sampling for 14 d (from d 22 to 35). Within-cow day-to-day variation was also low compared with that among cows within the same dietary group and was associated with a high repeatability in the day-to-day concentration of IGF-I in individual cows. Intraclass correlation coefficients for IGF-I ranged from 0.56 (± 0.14) to 0.88 (± 0.06) with a combined (pooled) value for the 4 subgroups of 0.77 (± 0.05). The ME and DMI effects (H vs. L) at d 35 were 79.3 vs. 41.4 and 62.0 vs. 55.7 ng/mL, respectively. Although the ME and DMI differences also affected milk yield and compositional parameters, the effects were not as proportionately great as those measured for IGF-I. Altering the ME or DMI components of the pasture-based diets produced changes in plasma IGF-I concentrations that did not become stabilized for 3 wk, but were then highly repeatable for individual cows within each dietary group. Both observations have relevance to interpreting data related to plasma concentrations of IGF-I in lactating Holstein cows.  相似文献

In three experiments, keratin was collected from individual teats of 40 Holstein and 20 Jersey cows immediately before and after milking. In Experiments 1 and 2, keratin collected from teats of 20 Holstein cows before milking was compared with keratin collected after milking. In Experiment 3, keratin was collected from two teats of 20 Jersey and 20 Holstein cows before milking and compared to the other two teats of the same cows after milking. All three experiments yielded similar results. In Holsteins, keratin weight before milking was 1.6 times greater than keratin weight after milking (3.1 vs. 1.9 mg). In Jerseys, only small amounts of keratin were removed during milking (3.5 mg before vs. 3.1 mg after) In Holsteins and Jerseys, neutral lipid concentration was 1.6 times greater after milking than before, suggesting that when keratin was removed during milking, only moderate amounts of lipid were removed. In Holsteins, total lipid collected per teat was similar before or after milking (59.2 vs. 48.5 micrograms). Results demonstrate that keratin collected after milking had a different lipid composition than keratin collected before milking.  相似文献

Dairy cows in confinement and pasture-based feeding systems were compared across four spring-calving and three fall-calving replicates for differences in reproduction, mastitis, body weights, and body condition scores. Feeding systems and replicates included both Jersey and Holstein cows. Cows in confinement were fed a total mixed ration, and cows on pasture were supplemented with concentrates and provided baled hay or haylage when pasture supply was limiting. Breeding periods were for 75 d in spring or fall. Reproductive performance did not differ significantly due to feeding system or season. Jerseys had higher conception rates (59.6 vs. 49.5 +/- 3.3%) and higher percentages of cows pregnant in 75 d (78.1 vs. 57.9 +/- 3.9%) than Holsteins. Cows in confinement had 1.8 times more clinical mastitis and eight times the rate of culling for mastitis than did cows on pasture. Jerseys had half as many clinical cases of mastitis per cow as Holsteins. Only 41 +/- 5% of confinement Holsteins remained for a subsequent lactation, starting within the defined calving season compared with 51 +/- 5% of pastured Holsteins and 71 and 72 +/- 5% of Jerseys, respectively. Body weights and condition scores were generally higher for confinement cows than pastured cows, and Jerseys had higher condition scores and lower body weights than Holsteins. In summary, pastured cows had fewer clinical cases of mastitis, lower body condition scores, and lower body weights than confinement cows. Holsteins were less likely to rebreed, had more mastitis, higher culling rates, and lower body condition scores than Jerseys.  相似文献
