Observations related to the formation and growth of small cracks ranging from subgrain dimension up to the order of 1 mm are summarized for amplitudes ranging from low cycle fatigue (LCF) to high cycle fatigue (HCF) conditions for polycrystalline metals. Further efforts to improve the accuracy of life estimation which address LCF, HCF and LCF–HCF interactions must consider various factors that are not presently addressed by conventional elastic–plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM) or linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) approaches based on long, self-similar cracks in homogeneous, isotropic materials, nor by conventional HCF design tools such as the εN curve, the SN curve, modified Goodman diagram and fatigue limit.Development of microstructure-sensitive fatigue crack propagation relations relies on deeper understanding of small crack behavior, including (a) interactions with microstructure and lack of constraint for microstructurally small cracks, (b) heterogeneity and anisotropy of cyclic slip processes associated with the orientation distribution of grains, and (c) local mode mixity effects on small crack growth. The basic technology is not yet sufficiently advanced in these areas to implement robust damage tolerant design for HCF. This paper introduces an engineering model which approximates the results of slip transfer calculations related to crack blockage by microstructure barriers; the model is consistent with critical plane concepts for Stage I growth of small cracks, standard cyclic stress–strain and strain–life equations above threshold, and the Kitagawa diagram for HCF threshold behaviors. It is able to correlate the most relevant trends of small crack growth behavior, including crack arrest at the fatigue limit, load sequence effects, and stress state effects.  相似文献

In the high-cycle fatigue regime, it is assumed that crack initiation mechanisms and short fatigue crack propagation processes govern fatigue life of a component. Moreover, it is now becoming accepted that the conventional fatigue limit does not imply complete reversibility of plastic strain and is connected to crack initiation. However, interaction of the crack tip with microstructural barriers, such as, e.g. grain boundaries or second phases, leads to a decrease and eventually to a stop in the crack propagation. In the present contribution, examples for propagating and non-propagating conditions of short fatigue cracks in the microstructure of a duplex steel are given, quantified by means of automated EBSD. To classify the results within the scope of predicting the service life for HCF- and VHCF-loading conditions, a numerical model based on the boundary element method has been developed, describing crack propagation by means of partially irreversible dislocation glide on crystallographic slip planes in a polycrystalline model microstructure (Voronoi cells). This concept is capable to account for the strong scattering in fatigue life for very small strain amplitudes and to contribute to the concept of tailored microstructures for improved cyclic-loading behaviour.  相似文献

ABSTRACT This paper explores the effects of microstructural heterogeneity on the cyclic crack tip opening and sliding displacements for stationary, microstructurally small transgranular surface cracks in a single phase metallic polycrystal using planar double slip crystal plasticity computations. Crack tip displacements are examined under plane strain conditions for stationary cracks of different lengths relative to grain size as a function of the applied nominal strain amplitude for tension-compression and cyclic shear. Nominal strain amplitudes range from well below to slightly above the nominal cyclic yield strength for each type of loading condition. Results indicate the complex nature of the crack tip sliding and opening displacements as functions of nominal strain amplitude and orientation of the nearest neighbour grains, the influence of the free surface in promoting the cyclic opening displacement even for cracks in the first surface grain, the rather restricted limits of applicability of linear elastic fracture mechanics, and very interesting crack tip plasticity effects which include crack tip displacement ratcheting or progressive accumulation, even for completely reversed, proportional applied loading. Results are compared for cases with and without crack face friction.  相似文献

High cycle fatigue (HCF) life in cast Al-Mg-Si alloys is particularly sensitive to the combination of microstructural inclusions and stress concentrations. Inclusions can range from large-scale shrinkage porosity with a tortuous surface profile to entrapped oxides introduced during the pour. When shrinkage porosity is controlled, the relevant microstructural initiation sites are often the larger Si particles within eutectic regions. In this paper, a HCF model is introduced which recognizes multiple inclusion severity scales for crack formation. The model addresses the role of constrained microplasticity around debonded particles or shrinkage pores in forming and growing microstructurally small fatigue cracks and is based on the cyclic crack tip displacement rather than linear elastic fracture mechanics stress intensity factor. Conditions for transitioning to long crack fatigue crack growth behavior are introduced. The model is applied to a cast A356-T6 Al alloy over a range of inclusion severities.  相似文献

The crack closure behaviour of microstructurally small fatigue cracks was numerically simulated by combining the crack-tip slip band model with the plasticity-induced crack closure model. A Stage II crack started to propagate from an initiated Stage I crack. When the plastic zone was constrained by the grain boundary or the adjacent grain with higher yield stresses, the crack opening stress increased with crack extension, and the effective component of the stress range decreased. The crack-tip opening displacement range (Δ CTOD ), first decreased with crack extension due to the development of the residual stretch, then increased until the tip of the plastic zone reached the neighbouring grain boundary. When the plastic zone was blocked by the grain boundary, Δ CTOD began to decrease. The arrest condition of cracks was given by the threshold value of Δ CTOD . At the fatigue limit, the arrest of small cracks takes place just after the Stage II crack crosses the grain boundary when the grain boundary does not act as a barrier. Only when the grain boundary has a blocking strength and the yield stress of adjacent grains is not so high, the arrest of Stage II cracks takes place before the crack reaches the grain boundary. The fatigue limit decreases with the mean stress. The predicted relation between the fatigue limit and the mean stress is close to the modified Goodman relation.  相似文献

Fatigue experiments were conducted on polycrystalline nickel of two grain sizes, 24 and 290 μm, to evaluate the effects of grain size on cyclic plasticity and fatigue crack initiation. Specimens were cycled at room temperature at plastic strain amplitudes ranging from 2.5×10−5 to 2.5×10−3. Analyses of the cyclic stress–strain response and evolution of hysteresis loop shape indicate that the back stress component of the cyclic stress is significantly affected by grain size and plastic strain amplitude, whereas these parameters have little effect on friction stress. A nonlinear kinematic hardening framework was used to study the evolution of back stress parameters with cumulative plastic strain. These are related to substructural evolution features. In particular, long range back stress components are related to persistent slip bands. The difference in cyclic plasticity behavior between the two grain sizes is related to the effect of grain size on persistent slip band (PSB) morphology, and the effect this has on long range back stress. Fine grain specimens had a much longer fatigue life, especially at low plastic strain amplitude, as a result of the influence of grain size on fatigue crack initiation characteristics. At low plastic strain amplitude (2.5×10−4), coarse grain specimens initiated cracks where PSBs impinged on grain boundaries. Fine grain specimens formed cracks along PSBs. At high plastic strain amplitude (2.5×10−3), both grain sizes initiated cracks at grain boundaries.  相似文献

A (high strain) low‐cycle fatigue (LCF) life prediction model of ultrafine‐grained (UFG) metals has been proposed. The microstructure of a UFG metal is treated as a two‐phase ‘composite’ consisting of the ‘soft’ matrix (all the grain interiors) and the ‘hard’ reinforcement (all the grain boundaries). The dislocation strengthening of the grain interiors is considered as the major strengthening mechanism in the case of UFG metals. The proposed model is based upon the assumption that there is a fatigue‐damaged zone ahead of the crack tip within which the actual degradation of the UFG metal takes place. In high‐strain LCF conditions, the fatigue‐damaged zone is described as the region in which the local cyclic stress level approaches the ultimate tensile strength of the UFG metal, with the plastic strain localization caused by a dislocation sliding‐off process within it. The fatigue crack growth rate is directly correlated to the range of the crack‐tip opening displacement. The empirical Coffin–Manson and Basquin relationships are derived theoretically and compared with experimental fatigue data obtained on UFG copper (99.99%) at room temperature under both strain and stress control. Good agreement is found between the model and the experimental data. It is remarkable that, although the model is essentially formulated for high strains (LCF), it is also found to be applicable at low strains in the high‐cycle fatigue (HCF) regime.  相似文献

An assessment of the effects of microstructure on room temperature fatigue threshold and crack propagation behaviour has been carried out on microstructural variants of U720Li, i.e. as‐received U720Li, U720Li‐LG (large grain variant) and U720Li‐LP (large intragranular coherent γ′ variant). Fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature using a 20 Hz sinusoidal cycling waveform at an R‐ratio = 0.1 on 12.5 mm × 12.5 mm square cross‐section SENB specimens with a 60° starter notch. U720Li‐LG showed the highest threshold ΔKKth), whilst U720Li‐LP showed the lowest ΔKth value. U720Li‐LP also showed higher crack growth rates in the near‐threshold regime and at high ΔK (although at higher ΔK levels the difference was less marked). Crack growth rates of U720Li and U720Li‐LG were relatively similar both in the near‐threshold regime and at high ΔK. The materials showed crystallographic stage I type crack growth in the near‐threshold regime, with U720Li showing distinct crystallographic facets on the fracture surface, while U720Li‐LG and U720Li‐LP showed mostly microfacets and a lower proportion of large facets. At high ΔK, crack growth in the materials becomes flat and featureless indicative of stage II type crack growth. The observed fatigue behaviour, which is an effect of the combined contributions of intrinsic and extrinsic crack growth resistances, is rationalized in terms of the microstructural characteristics of the materials. Enhanced room temperature fatigue threshold and near‐threshold long crack growth resistance are seen for materials with larger grain size and higher degree of planar slip which may be related to increased extrinsic crack growth resistance contributions from crack tip shielding and roughness‐induced crack closure. Differences in the deformation behaviour, either homogeneous or heterogeneous due to microstructural variation in this set of materials may provide approximately equivalent intrinsic crack growth resistance contributions at room temperature.  相似文献

Fretting fatigue crack nucleation in Ti?6Al?4V when fretted against itself is investigated to determine the influence of contact pressure, stress amplitude, stress ratio, and contact geometry on the degradation process. For the test parameters considered in this investigation, a partial slip condition generally prevails. The resulting fatigue modifying factors are 0.53 or less. Cycles to crack nucleation, frictional force evolution, crack orientations and their relationship to the microstructure are reported. The crack nucleation process volume is of the same order as the microstructural length scales with several non‐dominant cracks penetrating 50 μm or less. The effective coefficient of friction increases during early part of fretting. Observations suggest that cyclic plastic deformation is extensive in the surface layers and that cyclic ratchetting of plastic strain may play a key role in nucleation of the fretting cracks. A Kitagawa–Takahashi diagram is used to relate the depth of fretting damage to the modifying factor on fatigue life.  相似文献

The multistage fatigue model for high cycle fatigue of a cast aluminum alloy developed by McDowell et al. is modified to consider the structure-property relations for cyclic damage and fatigue life of a high strength aluminum alloy 7075-T651 for aircraft structural applications. The multistage model was developed as a physically-based framework to evaluate sensitivity of fatigue response to various microstructural features to support materials process design and component-specific tailoring of fatigue resistant materials. In this work, the model is first generalized to evaluate both the high cycle fatigue (HCF) and low cycle fatigue (LCF) regimes for multiaxial loading conditions, with appropriate modifications introduced for wrought materials. The particular microstructural features of relevance to fatigue in aluminum alloy 7075-T651 include micron-scale Fe-rich intermetallic particles and rolling textures. The model specifically addresses the role of local constrained cyclic microplasticity at fractured inclusions in fatigue crack incubation and microstructurally small crack growth, including the effect of crystallographic orientation on crack tip displacement as the driving force. The model is able to predict lower and upper bounds of the fatigue life based on measured inclusion sizes.  相似文献

The classical fatigue limit of ferrous metals is a consequence of testing materials at a constant range of cyclic stress and determining the cyclic stress range below which fatigue failures do not occur. This classical fatigue limit of a material is equated to the condition for which fatigue cracks can not propagate beyond microstructural barriers.
This paper discusses the causes leading to the elimination of this fatigue limit, including the introduction of transitory cyclic-dependent mechanisms and time-dependent processes that will permit a previously non-propagating crack to grow across the different threshold states expressed in terms of linear-elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), elastic–plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM) and microstructural fracture mechanics (MFM).
These transitory mechanisms and processes include different loading and environmental conditions, which in a long-life engineering plant (e.g. 30 years lifetime) can lead to apparently premature failures. Of greater concern is the creation of a new crack-initiation zone, i.e. a transfer from a surface-generated crack to an internal-generated crack that eventually dominates the fatigue failure event.
The impact of these conditions on the elimination of the classical fatigue limit necessitates changes in Design Codes of Practice, and such changes are discussed in relation to the extremely long-lifetime regime (107 < N f < 1012 cycles-to-failure) which is increasingly applicable to the modern day engineering plant.  相似文献

The cyclic stress response of two lithium-containing aluminium alloys aged to contain ordered precipitates was studied in different environments over a range of plastic strains. The specimens were cycled using tension-compression loading under total strain control. The peak-aged Al---Li---Mn alloy cyclically hardened to failure, whereas the peak-aged Al---Li---Cu alloy displayed softening for most of the fatigue life. The presence of shearable softening for most of the fatigue life. The presence of shearable precipitates in the two alloys results in a local decrease in resistance to dislocation movement, leading to a progressive loss of ordering contributions to hardening and slip concentration. This, coupled with the presence of precipitate free zones, promotes strain localization in intense slip bands and results in early crack nucleation. Transmission electron microscopy observations revealed homogeneous deformation in specimens cycled at high plastic strain amplitudes. However, at lower plastic strain amplitudes, deformation was inhomogeneous in the two alloy systems with the formation of intense planar slip bands. Results of this study reveal that the initial hardening observed is due to dislocation-dislocation and dislocation-precipitate interaction and that the softening observed in the Al---Li---Cu alloy is a mechanical and not an environmental effect.  相似文献

Studies on microstructurally small fatigue cracks have illustrated that heterogeneous microstructural features such as inclusions, pores, grain size distribution as well as precipitate size distribution and volume fraction create stochasticity in their behavior under cyclic loads. Therefore, to enhance safe-life and damage-tolerance approaches, accurate modeling of the influence of these heterogeneous microstructural features on microstructurally small crack formation and growth from stress raisers is necessary. In this work, computational micromechanics was used to predict the high cycle fatigue of microstructurally small crack formation and growth in notched polycrystalline nickel-base superalloys and to quantify the variability in the driving force for formation and growth of microstructurally small crack from notch root in the matrix with non-metallic inclusions. The framework involves computational modeling to obtain three-dimensional perspectives of microstructural features influencing fatigue crack growth in notched nickel-base superalloys, which accounts for the effects of nonlocal notch root plasticity, loading, microstructural variability, and extrinsic defects on local cyclic plasticity at the microstructure-scale level. This approach can be used to explore sensitivity of minimum fatigue lifetime to microstructures. The simulation results obtained from this framework were calibrated to existing experimental results for polycrystalline nickel-base superalloys.  相似文献

The effect of microstructural characteristics on high-cycle fatigue properties and fatigue crack propagation behavior of welded regions of an investment cast Ti-6Al-4V were investigated. High-cycle fatigue and fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted on the welded regions, which were processed by two different welding methods: tungsten inert gas (TIG) and electron beam (EB) welding. Test data were analyzed in relation to microstructure, tensile properties, and fatigue fracture mode. The base metal was composed of an alpha plate colony structure transformed to a basket-weave structure with thin platelets after welding and annealing. High-cycle fatigue results indicated that fatigue strength of the EB weld was lower than that of the base metal or the TIG weld because of the existence of large micropores formed during welding, although it had the highest yield strength. In the case of the fatigue crack propagation, the EB weld composed of thinner platelets had a faster crack propagation rate than the base metal or the TIG weld. The effective microstructural feature determining the fatigue crack propagation rate was found to be the width of platelets because it was well matched with the reversed cyclic plastic zone size calculated in the threshold ΔK regime.  相似文献

Advances in higher resolution experimental techniques have shown that metallic materials can develop fatigue cracks under cyclic loading levels significantly below the yield stress. Indeed, the traditional notion of a fatigue limit can be recast in terms of limits associated with nucleation and arrest of fatigue cracks at the microstructural scale. Although fatigue damage characteristically emerges from irreversible dislocation processes at sub-grain scales, the specific microstructure attributes, environment, and loading conditions can strongly affect the apparent failure mode and surface to subsurface transitions. In this paper we discuss multiple mechanisms that occur during fatigue loading in the high cycle fatigue (HCF) to very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regimes. We compare these regimes, focusing on strategies to bridge experimental and modeling approaches exercised at multiple length scales and discussing particular challenges to modeling and simulation regarding microstructure-sensitive fatigue driving forces and thresholds. We conclude by discussing some of the challenges in predicting the transition of failure mechanisms at different stress and strain amplitudes.  相似文献

The effects of hydrogen charge on cyclic stress–strain properties, slip band morphology and crack behaviour of annealed medium carbon steels (JIS‐S45C) were studied. The total strain range of the stress–strain hysteresis loop in the hydrogen‐charged specimen was smaller than that in the uncharged specimen. Localized slip bands were observed in the hydrogen‐charged specimen, while the slip bands were widely and uniformly distributed in the uncharged specimen. It is presumed that the decrease in the total strain range of the hysteresis loop is due to the slip localization caused by the hydrogen charge and cyclic loading. The sites of fatigue crack initiation were mostly at grain boundaries in the uncharged specimen. The sites of crack initiation in the hydrogen‐charged specimen were not only at grain boundaries but also at slip bands inside ferrite grains. These results imply that hydrogen enhances dislocation mobility along slip bands and results in slip localization. These slip bands then attract hydrogen. This mechanism of hydrogen–slip band interaction may play an important role in the hydrogen‐influenced metal fatigue.  相似文献

Linear friction welded Ti–6Al–4V was investigated in fatigue at various stress amplitudes ranging from the high cycle fatigue (HCF) to the low cycle fatigue (LCF) regime. The base material was composed of hot-rolled Ti–6Al–4V plate that presented a strong crystallographic texture. The welds were characterized in terms of microstructure using electron backscatter diffraction and hardness measurements. The microstructural gradients across the weld zone and thermomechanically affected zone of the linear friction welds are discussed in terms of the crystallographic texture, grain shape and hardness levels, relative to the parent material. The location of crack nucleation under fatigue loading was analyzed relative to the local microstructural features and hardness gradients. Though crack nucleation was not observed within the weld or thermomechanically affected zones, its occurrence within the base material in LCF appears to be affected by the welding process. In particular, by performing high resolution digital image correlation during LCF, the crack nucleation site was related to the local accumulation of plastic deformation in the vicinity of the linear friction weld.  相似文献

Fatigue life, initiation and propagation of cracks at 800 °C in a cast Ni-base superalloy IN 713LC were experimentally studied in high-cycle fatigue region. Load symmetrical cycling and cycling with high tensile mean load were applied. Both crystallographic crack initiation resulting in long Stage I crack growth and non-crystallographic Stage II propagation were observed. High scatter of fatigue life data was explained by: (i) variability in microstructural conditions for crystallographic crack initiation and propagation and by (ii) influence of casting defect size distribution. The fractographic observation supports the slip band decohesion mechanism of crack initiation and an important role of cyclic slip localization in persistent slip bands.  相似文献

A method for evaluating the cumulative damage resulting from the application of cyclic stress (or strain) sequences of varying amplitude is presented. Both the crack initiation and propagation stages of the fatigue failure process are included. The development is based on the concept of plastic strain energy dissipation as a function of cyclic life. The damage accumulated at any stage is evaluated from a knowledge of the fatigue limit in the initiation phase and an ‘apparent’ limit obtained through fracture mechanics for the propagation phase. The proposed damage theory is compared with two-level strain cycle test data of thin-walled specimens, and is found to be in fairly good agreement.  相似文献
