The Board of Directors announces that 3,486 persons were elected to initial membership in the American Psychological Association as of January 1, 1978. Of these, 2,525 were elected as Members, and 961 as Associate members. Though not all of them have validated their election by payment of initial dues, all but a few will eventually do so. In addition, in accordance with Article II, Section 8, of the Bylaws, 402 Associate members were transferred to Member status as of January 1, 1978. A list of new members and associates is included. The Board of Directors announces that 3,446 persons were elected to initial membership in the American Psychological Association as of January 1, 1979. Of these, 2,557 were elected as Members, and 889 as Associate members. Though not all of them have validated their election by payment of initial dues, all but a few will eventually do so. In addition, in accordance with Article II, Section 8, of the Bylaws, 344 Associate members were transferred to Member status as of January 1, 1979. Knight Dunlap was a great prophet.

Discusses how, during a meeting of the American Psychological Association at which business matters were put to the members directly, at Evanston in 1941, there was proposed the hiring of an executive secretary for the American Psychological Association and the establishment of an office in Washington. Knight Dunlap argued that this would lead to a gigantic central staff needing more and more dues. Central Office: Scientific Affairs Office: Planning a program for the next several years.

The Scientific Affairs Office of APA is concerned mainly with who in psychology is doing research, what is done, under what conditions, and to what use it is put. Scientific Affairs might be expected to carry out periodic surveys on the relative amounts of psychological research in various areas of psychology. These surveys, in addition to describing the state of the science, should attempt to analyze the reasons for concentration of research in some areas and omissions in others.
