In present neutron kinetics codes, control rods banks do not have the possibility of dynamic movement during the simulation of a transient; besides it is necessary to send the boron concentration from the thermal-hydraulic code to the neutronic code to account for changes in cross-sections due to boron dilution. For instance, control rod movements are pre-programmed with simple instructions introduced before the beginning of the calculation. Hence, control rod positions are not related to the core characteristics and the control systems at any time of the simulation. This work presents the changes introduced in RELAP5/PARCS v2.7 codes to achieve that control rods and the boron injection become more dynamic and realistic components in such kind of simulators. Furthermore, in order to test the modifications introduced in both codes, it has been analyzed a boron injection transient in a typical PWR Nuclear Power Plant. The thermal-hydraulic model includes all the primary loop components of a PWR, the core fuel assemblies modeled with PIPE components, pumps, steam generators, pressurizer, etc. The neutronic representation of the reactor has been made in a one-to-one basis fuel channel model for the whole core.  相似文献

In nuclear safety field, neutronic and thermalhydraulic codes performance is an important issue. New capabilities implementation, as well as models and tools improvements are a significant part of the community effort in looking for better nuclear power plants (NPP) designs. A procedure to analyze the PWR response to local deviations on neutronic or thermalhydraulic parameters is being developed. This procedure includes the simulation of Incore and Excore neutron flux detectors signals. A control rod drop real plant transient is used to validate the used codes and their new capabilities. Cross-section data are obtained by means of the SIMTAB methodology. Detailed thermalhydraulic models were developed: RELAP5 and TRACE models simulate three different azimuthal zones. Besides, TRACE model is performed with a fully three-dimensional core, thus, the cross-flow can be obtained. A Cartesian vessel represents the fuel assemblies and a cylindrical vessel the bypass and downcomer. Simulated detectors signals are obtained and compared with the real data collected during a control rod drop trial at a PWR NPP and also with data obtained with SIMULATE-3K code.  相似文献

The design or modification and in general the analysis and control of nuclear reactors require complex calculations, which are carried out by numerical codes including neutronic and thermal-hydraulic components. Among the neutronic codes, the deterministic ones which solve the neutron transport/diffusion equation simulate the reactor core by dividing it into homogenized zones, i.e. volumes within which the macroscopic nuclear properties are considered uniform. These codes have been extensively used and tested for several decades and are shown to perform well when they analyze reactor cores containing regions with relatively homogeneous distributions of fuel, moderator and absorbing materials. In this work, the sensitivity of computed key neutronic parameters to the partitioning of the reactor core in homogenized zones is examined. Application is made for a configuration of the Greek Research Reactor (GRR-1) core, which is pool type, fueled by slab-type fuel elements. For the calculations, the neutronic code system consisting of XSDRNPM (cell-calculations) and CITATION (core analysis) is used with two different definitions of homogeneous zones for the special/control fuel assemblies. The effect on computations of neutron flux distribution, void-induced reactivity and total control rod worth is examined based on corresponding measurements. It is shown that with a more appropriate partition in homogeneous zones, the agreement of computed results with measurements can be remarkably improved concerning mainly the neutron flux, while the control rods worth is the less affected quantity.  相似文献

In this study, a new and innovative method is introduced for analyzing neutronic and thermal-hydraulic calculation. For this aim, VVR-S research reactor was selected, and the calculation procedure was performed for it. WIMS, CITATION and COBRA-EN codes were used for investigation. Calculation model consists of two sub-models: neutronic and thermo-hydraulic. The neutronic model uses WIMS and CITATION codes for neutronic simulation of the reactor core and calculating flux and power distribution over it. WIMS code simulates the fuel assemblies and CITATION models the core. The thermal-hydraulic model uses COBRA-EN code for performing the relative calculation. In this study, FORTRAN 90 program is used for linking two sub-models and performing the calculation. The proposed procedure is performed for VVR-S analysis and finally, the obtained results are compared with the experimental results that show good agreement with it.  相似文献

This paper examines the applicability of a mathematical dynamic model developed here for the simulation of the thermal-hydraulic transient analysis for light water reactors (LWRs). The thermal-hydraulic dynamic modeling of the fuel pin and adjacent coolant channel in LWRs is based on the moving boundary concept. The fuel pin model (FUELPIN) with moving boundaries is developed to accommodate the core thermal-hydraulic model, with detailed thermal conduction in fuel elements. Some results from transient calculations are examined for the first application of the thermal-hydraulic model and the fuel pin model with moving boundaries in a boiling water reactor (BWR). An accurate minimum departure from nucleate boiling ratio (MDNBR) and its axial MDNBR boundary versus time within the fuel channel are predicted during transients. Transient analysis using a known thermal-hydraulic code, COBRA and FUELPIN linked with a PWR systems analysis code show that the thermal margin gains more by a transient MDNBR approach than the traditional quasi-steady methodology for a pressurized water reactor (PWR). The studies of the overall nuclear reactor system show that moving boundary formulation provides an efficient and suitable tool for thermal transient analysis of LWRs.  相似文献

In this research paper a reactivity control technique has been suggested for the conceptual design of a compact sized pressurized water reactor (PWR) core with an inventive tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) fuel particle composition. This conceptual design is a light water cooled and moderated reactor which utilizes TRISO fuel particles in PWR technology. The use of TRISO fuel in PWR technology improves integrity of the design due to its fission fragments retention ability. The fuel provides first retention barrier within fuel itself against the release of fission fragments that makes this design concept safer and environment friendly. The suggested TRISO fuel particle composition has a small amount of Pu-240 with 2.0 w/o in the place of U-238 which acts as reactivity suppressor. Reactor codes WIMS-D/4 and CITATION have been used for simulation and core design modeling. Results reveals that the amount of excess reactivity can be reduced significantly by using a small amount of Pu-240 in TRISO fuel which in turns reduces the number of gadolinia rods in the core required for excess reactivity control and completely eliminates the requirement of soluble boron system. Therefore the effective and optimal use of reactivity suppressor and burnable poison suppresses and flattens the core excess reactivity throughout the core life and hence number of control rods can be reduced without compromising on the shutdown margin.  相似文献

The FRED fuel rod code is being developed for thermal and mechanical simulation of fast breeder reactor (FBR) and light-water reactor (LWR) fuel behaviour under base-irradiation and accident conditions. The current version of the code calculates temperature distribution in fuel rods, stress-strain condition of cladding, fuel deformation, fuel-cladding gap conductance, and fuel rod inner pressure. The code was previously evaluated in the frame of two OECD mixed plutonium-uranium oxide (MOX) fuel performance benchmarks and then integrated into PSI's FAST code system to provide the fuel rod temperatures necessary for the neutron kinetics and thermal-hydraulic modules in transient calculations. This paper briefly overviews basic models and material property database of the FRED code used to assess the fuel behaviour under steady-state conditions. In addition, the code was used to simulate the IFA-503.2 tests, performed at the Halden reactor for two PWR and twelve VVER fuel samples under base-irradiation conditions. This paper presents the results of this simulation for two cases using a code-to-data comparison of fuel centreline temperatures, internal gas pressures, and fuel elongations. This comparison has demonstrated that the code adequately describes the important physical mechanisms of the uranium oxide (UOX) fuel rod thermal performance under steady-state conditions. Future activity should be concentrated on improving the model and extending the validation range, especially to the MOX fuel steady-state and transient behaviour.  相似文献

This paper summarizes the current status of the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) version of the coupled three-dimensional (3-D) thermal-hydraulic/kinetics TRAC-PF1/NEM code for pressurized water reactor (PWR) transient and accident analysis and describes applications to reactivity insertion accident (RIA) simulations as well as recent developments. The TRAC-PF1/NEM methodology utilizes closely coupled 3-D thermal-hydraulics and 3-D core neutronics transient models to simulate the vessel and a 1-D simulation of the primary system. An efficient and flexible cross-section generation procedure was developed and implemented into TRAC-PF1/NEM. These features make the coupled code capable of modeling PWR reactivity transients, including boron dilution transients, in a reasonable amount of computer time. Three-dimensional studies on hot zero power (HZP) rod ejection and main steam line break (MSLB) transients in a PWR, as well as a large break loss-of-coolant-accident (LBLOCA) and boron dilution transients, were accomplished using TRAC-PF1/NEM. The results obtained demonstrate that this code is appropriate for analysis of the space-dependent neutronics and thermal-hydraulic coupled phenomena related to most current safety issues.  相似文献

A design concept for a small nuclear reactor for neutron transmutation doping silicon (NTD-Si) using a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) full-length fuel assembly was proposed in our previous work. The excess reactivity was suppressed by a combination of Gd2O3 and soluble boron, which results in a flatter flux profile over the core than with control rod insertion; however, the soluble boron system for reactivity control is quite complex and expensive. The removal of this system would make the design much simpler. In the current work, the removal of soluble boron is considered. Criticality, neutron transportation and core burn-up calculations were performed using the MVP/GMVP II code and MVP-BURN code. The calculation results show that the insertion of control rods in five of the nine assemblies is enough to suppress reactivity. The thermal hydraulic analysis showed that heat removal from the core was possible under 1 atm operating pressure. Silicon ingots up to 30 cm in diameter could be irradiated with sufficient uniformity in the irradiation channels.  相似文献

The initial objective of this project was to directly couple the RAMONA and TRAC codes running on different PCs. The idea was to use the best part of each one and eliminate some of their limitations and widen the applicability of these codes to simulate different BWR and system components. It was required to try to minimize the amount of changes to present code subroutines and calculation procedures. If possible, just substitute values obtained in the parallel code. Preliminary results indicated that using a CHAN component of TRAC to model thermal-hydraulic phenomena for each neutronic channel modeled in RAMONA is rather difficult. Large amounts of CPU time consumption are obtained and lots of PCs would make this solution difficult, besides considerable large transients are introduced by the differences in thermal-hydraulic results of these codes. The substitution of the thermal-hydraulics of RAMONA, by the TRAC channel calculations, is possible but simulation of a null transient on both codes must be planed and a gradual change must be controlled by an additional supervisory subroutine. An indirect coupling of these codes, it is therefore proposed, in order to eliminate most of these limitations. In this indirect coupling, a thermal-hydraulic model of the average tube in a bundle and the global channel cooling fluid dynamics is programmed for each neutronic channel while the global reactor vessel and core is modeled by TRAC with just four channels and four rings. Results are more reliable, coupling is simpler and faster simulations are possible.

Since the conventional subchannel analysis codes are designed for the land-based reactor core, a thermal-hydraulic subchannel analysis code was developed to evaluate thermal-hydraulic characteristics of the reactor core under motion conditions. The verification of the code was performed with experimental data and commercial codes. The ISPRA 16-rod tests were used to evaluate the steady-state prediction performance of the code, and the simulation results agree well with the test data. COBRA-EN code was applied to check the transient prediction performance of the code, and there is a good agreement between the predictions with both codes. An additional forces model for motion conditions was proposed in the code, and CFX-14.0 code was applied to verify the model. The results show that the code can be used in the thermal-hydraulic analysis of the reactor core under motion conditions. To illustrate the capabilities of the code, a fuel bundle under a complex motion condition was simulated, and the results are reasonable.  相似文献

The PRORIA code and its recent modifications are described here. The PRORIA code analyzes the transient response of the core against the reactivity increase caused by the control rod rapid withdrawal. The code solves and analyzes neutronic and thermal–hydraulic equations simultaneously. The code is designed for western PWR-type reactor performance. The equations representing thermal–hydraulic and neutronic should be modified to use the code to analyze VVER-1000 reactor core transients, because The VVER-1000 reactor fuel has a central hole in the fuel pellet. In a cylindrical solid fuel pellet, operation of an oxide fuel material at high temperature alters its morphology and the inner region is restructured to form a void at the center surrounded by a dense fuel region. Most of the restructuring occurs within the first few days of operation with slow changes afterward. Hence, the effects of a central hole in mathematical equations and in the transient are investigated. After the code modification, three accident scenarios with control rod ejection are simulated. The results are in good agreement with those reported in the plant’s FSAR. The results show that the peak fuel temperature in the hot fuel pin is lower than what the original code predicts by 150–500 °C. Furthermore, the Doppler reactivity effect, when the fuel pellet has a central hole, is higher than the solid fuel pellet.  相似文献

The NEXUS project is an effort to merge and modernize the methods employed in Westinghouse PWR and BWR steady-state reactor physics codes. The NEXUS system relies on a once-through nodal cross-section generation methodology with an innovative and efficient technique for pin power recovery. The pin power methodology overcomes a well-known limitation of existing methodologies, namely the incapacity to properly account for heterogeneity changes due to the depletion environment. The so-called control rod history problem where control rods are repeatedly inserted and withdrawn during core depletion is a good example of such a case. In addition to the control rod history impact on pin power distributions, the insertion of control rods during extended periods leads to significant control rod depletion that affects the reactivity worth of the control rods which in turn can have a significant impact on pin powers. The importance of accurately predicting pin powers, combined with the need to adequately estimate the reactivity worth and nuclear end of life of control rods in BWRs and in generation III+ PWRs, has motivated the development of a novel control rod depletion model. This methodology and its numerical qualification, initially for PWR application only, is the topic of this paper. The focus is on describing the salient features of the model and on illustrating its performance by means of numerical experiments. It is shown that together with the NEXUS pin power recovery model, the control rod depletion methodology accurately predicts the reactivity feedback from repeated control rod insertions in a PWR core.  相似文献

Reactor dynamic tests, which are categorized as one of the power start-up test groups, are the most complex tests during commissioning of the new nuclear power plants. This paper presents the results of Turbo-Generator load reduction test as one of the reactor dynamic tests for VVER-1000/V446 unit at Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP). In this test modeling because of the need for control rod bank worth and core reactivity coefficients, the core geometry has been modeled first by using WIMSD-5B/PARCSv2.7 codes for neutronic calculations. For performing the thermal-hydraulic analysis, the RELAP5/MOD3.2 computer code has been used. The control rod bank worth and core reactivity coefficients obtained from WIMSD-5B/PARCSv2.7 are compared with BNPP FSAR that confirm the ability and reliability of the method. Also comparison of the thermal-hydraulic core parameters obtained from RELAP5/MOD3.2 against actual plant data, indicate that this code can properly predict behavior of VVER-1000 reactor for this dynamic start-up test.  相似文献

This paper summarizes the neutronic part of a study of the feasibility of designing BWR cores to have enhanced power density and simplified fuel bundle by using hydride instead of oxide fuel. A 3D fuel bundle neutronic analysis is performed for a limited number of geometries to determine attainable discharge burnup, pin-by-pin power distribution, axial power distribution, reactivity coefficients, reactivity worth of control elements and burnable absorber effects. It is found that hydride fuel bundle design can be simplified by eliminating water rods and partial length fuel rods and by reducing the volume of water in-between the fuel bundles. Both an ideal and more practical bundle designs are examined. A companion study of the thermal-hydraulic and vibration characteristics of BWR cores predicts that the increase in the number of fuel rods per given core volume enables increasing the BWR power density by up to ∼30% relative to oxide fuelled core design. The net outcome is expected to be improved BWR economics even though hydride fuel requires higher uranium enrichment to compensate for its reduced uranium loading.  相似文献
