Gadolinium zirconate (Gd2Zr2O7, GZ) as one of the promising thermal barrier coating materials for high-temperature application in gas turbine was toughened by nanostructured 3 mol% yttria partially-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) incorporation. The fracture toughness of the composite of 90 mol% GZ-10 mol% YSZ (GZ–YSZ) was increased by about 60% relative to the monolithic GZ. Both the GZ and GZ–YSZ composite coatings were deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying on Ni-base superalloys and then thermal-shock tested under the same conditions. The thermal-shock lifetime of GZ–YSZ composite coating was improved, which is believed to be mainly attributed to the enhancement of fracture toughness by the addition of YSZ. In addition, the failure mechanisms of the thermal-shock tested GZ–YSZ composite coatings were discussed.  相似文献

Gd2O3 and Yb2O3 co-doped 3.5 mol% Y2O3–ZrO2 and conventional 3.5 mol% Y2O3–ZrO2 (YSZ) powders were synthesized by solid state reaction. The objective of this study was to improve the phase stability, mechanical properties and thermal insulation of YSZ. After heat treatment at 1500 °C for 10 h, 1 mol% Gd2O3–1 mol% Yb2O3 co-doped YSZ (1Gd1Yb-YSZ) had higher resistance to destabilization of metastable tetragonal phase than YSZ. The hardness of 5 mol% Gd2O3–1 mol% Yb2O3 co-doped YSZ (5Gd1Yb-YSZ) was higher than that of YSZ. Compared with YSZ, 1Gd1Yb-YSZ and 5Gd1Yb-YSZ exhibited lower thermal conductivity and shorter phonon mean free path. At 1300 °C, the thermal conductivity of 5Gd1Yb-YSZ was 1.23 W/m K, nearly 25% lower than that of YSZ (1.62 W/m K). Gd2O3 and Yb2O3 co-doped YSZ can be explored as a candidate material for thermal barrier coating applications.  相似文献

(Gd1−xYbx)2Zr2O7 compounds were synthesized by solid reaction. Yb2O3 doped Gd2Zr2O7 exhibited lower thermal conductivities and higher thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) than Gd2Zr2O7. The TECs of (Gd1−xYbx)2Zr2O7 ceramics increased with increasing Yb2O3 contents. (Gd0.9Yb0.1)2Zr2O7 (GYbZ) ceramic exhibited the lowest thermal conductivity among all the ceramics studied, within the range of 0.8–1.1 W/mK (20–1600 °C). The Young's modulus of GYbZ bulk is 265.6 ± 11 GPa. GYbZ/YSZ double-ceramic-layer thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were prepared by electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD). The coatings had an average life of more than 3700 cycles during flame shock test with a coating surface temperature of ∼1350 °C. Spallation failure of the TBC occurred by delamination cracking within GYbZ layer, which was a result of high temperature gradient in the GYbZ layer and low fracture toughness of GYbZ material.  相似文献

This paper compares the hot corrosion performance of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), Gd2Zr2O7, and YSZ + Gd2Zr2O7 composite coatings in the presence of molten mixture of Na2SO4 + V2O5 at 1050 °C. These YSZ and rare earth zirconate coatings were prepared by atmospheric plasma spray (APS). Chemical interaction is found to be the major corrosive mechanism for the deterioration of these coatings. Characterizations using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicate that in the case of YSZ, the reaction between NaVO3 and Y2O3 produces YVO4 and leads to the transformation of tetragonal ZrO2 to monoclinic ZrO2. For the Gd2Zr2O7 + YSZ composite coating, by the formation of GdVO4, the amount of YVO4 formed on the YSZ + Gd2Zr2O7 composite coating is significantly reduced. Molten salt also reacts with Gd2Zr2O7 to form GdVO4. Under a temperature of 1050 °C, Gd2Zr2O7 based coatings are more stable, both thermally and chemically, than YSZ, and exhibit a better hot corrosion resistance.  相似文献

3.5 mol% Er2O3 stabilized ZrO2 (ErSZ) and Gd2Zr2O7 powders were produced by a chemical co-precipitation and calcination method, and ErSZ was used to toughen Gd2Zr2O7. The phase structure, toughness and thermal conductivities of ErSZ toughened Gd2Zr2O7 ceramics were investigated. When the ErSZ content was below 15 mol%, the compound consisted of pyrochlore phase, the ordering degree of which decreased with the increase of the ErSZ content. High ErSZ doping led to the formation of metastable tetragonal (t′) phase in the compound. The addition of ErSZ in Gd2Zr2O7 benefited its toughness, mainly attributable to the presence of t′ phase in the compound. With the increase of the ErSZ content in the compound, the thermal conductivity first decreased and then showed an upward tendency, and 10 mol% ErSZ toughened Gd2Zr2O7 exhibited the lowest thermal conductivity.  相似文献

The microstructure of following thermal barrier coatings (TBC) was characterised in this paper: monolayer coatings Nd2Zr2O7 and 8YSZ; a double ceramic layered (DCL) coating. Coatings were characterised by thicknesses that did not exceed 300 μm and porosities of approx. 5%. The chemical and phase composition analysis of the DCL layers revealed an external Nd2Zr2O7 ceramic layer approx. 80 μm thick, a transitional zone approx. 120 μm thick and an internal 8YSZ layer 100 μm thick. For the case of the monolayer coating, the Nd2Zr2O7 pyrochlore phase was the only one-phase component. The surface topography of both TBC systems was typical for plasma sprayed coatings, and compressive stress state had a value of approx. 5–10 MPa. Measurements of the thermal parameters, i.e., thermal diffusivity, point to considerably better insulative properties for both new types of layers when compared to the standard 8YSZ layers.  相似文献

In this article, the nanostructured 2 mol% Gd2O3-4.5 mol% Y2O3-ZrO2(2GdYSZ) coating was developed by the atmospheric plasma spraying technique. And the microstructure and thermal properties of plasma-sprayed 2GdYSZ coating were investigated. The result from the investigation indicates that the as-sprayed coating is characterized by typical microstructure consisting of melted zones, nano-zones, splats, nano-pores, high-volume spheroidal pores and micro-cracks. The 2GdYSZ coating shows a lower resistance to destabilization of the metastable tetragonal (t′) phase compared to the yttria stabilized zirconia(YSZ). The thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of the nano-2GdYSZ coating at room temperature are 0.431 mm2 s−1 and 1.042 W/m K, respectively. Addition of gadolinia to the nano-YSZ can significantly reduce the thermal conductivity compared to the nano-YSZ and the conventional YSZ. The reduction is mainly attributed to the synergetic effect of gadolinia doping along with nanostructure.  相似文献

Nanostructured 30 mol% LaPO4 doped Gd2Zr2O7 (Gd2Zr2O7-LaPO4) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were produced by air plasma spraying (APS). The coatings consist of Gd2Zr2O7 and LaPO4 phases, with desirable chemical composition and obvious nanozones embedded in the coating microstructure. Calcium-magnesium-alumina- silicate (CMAS) corrosion tests were carried out at 1250 °C for 1–8 h to study the corrosion resistance of the coatings. Results indicated that the nanostructured Gd2Zr2O7-LaPO4 TBCs reveals high resistance to penetration by the CMAS melt. During corrosion tests, an impervious crystalline reaction layer consisting of Gd-La-P apatite, anorthite, spinel and tetragonal ZrO2 phases forms on the coating surfaces. The layer is stable at high temperatures and has significant effect on preventing further infiltration of the molten CMAS into the coatings. Furthermore, the porous nanozones could gather the penetrated molten CMAS like as an absorbent, which benefits the CMAS resistance of the coatings.  相似文献

A composite coating composed of La2Ce2O2 (LCO) and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) in a weight ratio of 1:1 was deposited by the plasma spraying using a blended YSZ and LCO powders, and the stability of the LCO/YSZ interface exposed to a high temperature was investigated. The LCO/YSZ deposits were exposed at 1300 °C for different durations. The microstructure evolution at the LCO/YSZ interface was investigated by quasi-in-situ scanning electron microscopy assisted by X-ray energy-dispersive spectrum analyses and X-ray diffraction measurements. At an exposure temperature of 1300 °C, the grain morphology of LCO splats in contact with YSZ splats changed from columnar grains to quasi-axial grains with interface healing, and some grains tended to disappear during the thermal exposure. The results indicate that the phases in LCO–YSZ composite coating are not stable at 1300 °C. The element La in the LCO splat diffused towards the adjacent YSZ splat during the exposure, generating the reaction product layers composed of La2Zr2O7 between the LCO and YSZ splats. After exposed for 200 h, the composite coating consisted of a mixture of mainly La2Zr2O7 and CeO2 and a minor amount of YSZ, accounting for the unusual decrease in the thermal conductivity at the late stage of exposure.  相似文献

Thermal insulation applications have long required materials with low thermal conductivity, and one example is yttria (Y2O3)-stabilized zirconia (ZrO2) (YSZ) as thermal barrier coatings used in gas turbine engines. Although porosity has been a route to the low thermal conductivity of YSZ coatings, nonporous and conformal coating of YSZ thin films with low thermal conductivity may find a great impact on various thermal insulation applications in nanostructured materials and nanoscale devices. Here, we report on measurements of the thermal conductivity of atomic layer deposition-grown, nonporous YSZ thin films of thickness down to 35 nm using time-domain thermoreflectance. We find that the measured thermal conductivities are 1.35–1.5 W m−1 K−1 and do not strongly vary with film thickness. Without any reduction in thermal conductivity associated with porosity, the conductivities we report approach the minimum, amorphous limit, 1.25 W m−1 K−1, predicted by the minimum thermal conductivity model.  相似文献

Gd2Zr2O7 ceramic was prepared by solid state reaction at 1650 °C for 10 h in air, and exhibited a defect fluorite-type structure. Reaction between molten V2O5 and Gd2Zr2O7 ceramic was investigated at temperatures ranging from 700 to 850 °C using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Molten V2O5 reacted with Gd2Zr2O7 to form ZrV2O7 and GdVO4 at 700 °C; however, in a temperature range of 750–850 °C, molten V2O5 reacted with Gd2Zr2O7 to form GdVO4 and m-ZrO2. Two different reactions observed at 700 °C and 750–850 °C could be explained based on the thermal instability of ZrV2O7.  相似文献

Hot corrosion behavior of (Gd0.9Sc0.1)2Zr2O7 ceramic exposed to V2O5 molten salt at 700–1000 °C was investigated, providing better understanding of its corrosion resistance as a promising thermal barrier coating. Obvious corrosion reaction occurred between (Gd0.9Sc0.1)2Zr2O7 and V2O5 molten salt after 4 h heat treatment, corrosion products being temperature dependent. At 700 °C, large amount of Sc2O3 doped ZrV2O7 and GdVO4, together with a minor amount of Sc2O3-stabilized tetragonal ZrO2 (t-ZrO2), formed on the sample surfaces. With the increase of the test temperature, Sc2O3 doped ZrV2O7 turned to decompose, leading to the formation of more t-ZrO2. At 900 °C and 1000 °C, the corrosion products were composed of GdVO4 and t-ZrO2. The mechanism by which the corrosion reaction occurs is proposed based on phase diagrams and Lewis acid-base rule.  相似文献

Yb2O3 (10 mol%) and Gd2O3 (20 mol%) doped SrZrO3 was investigated as a material for thermal barrier coating (TBC) applications. The thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) of sintered bulk Sr(Zr0.9Yb0.1)O2.95 and Sr(Zr0.8Gd0.2)O2.9 were recorded by a high-temperature dilatometer and revealed a positive influence on phase transformations of SrZrO3 by doping Yb2O3 or Gd2O3. The results for the thermal conductivities of Sr(Zr0.9Yb0.1)O2.95 and Sr(Zr0.8Gd0.2)O2.9 indicated that both dopants can reduce the thermal conductivity of SrZrO3. Mechanical properties (Young's modulus, hardness, and fracture toughness) of dense Sr(Zr0.9Yb0.1)O2.95 and Sr(Zr0.8Gd0.2)O2.9 showed lower Young's modulus, hardness and comparable fracture toughness with respect to YSZ. The cycling lifetimes of Sr(Zr0.9Yb0.1)O2.95/YSZ and Sr(Zr0.8Gd0.2)O2.9/YSZ double layer coatings (DLC), which were prepared by plasma spraying, were comparable to that of YSZ at operating temperatures <1300 °C. However, the cycling lifetime of Sr(Zr0.9Yb0.1)O2.95/YSZ DLC was 25% longer, whereas Sr(Zr0.8Gd0.2)O2.9/YSZ DLC had a shorter lifetime compared to the optimized YSZ coating at operating temperatures >1300 °C.  相似文献

The nanostructured single-ceramic-layer (SCL) 8YSZ thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), double-ceramic-layer (DCL) Sm2Zr2O7 (SZ)/8YSZ and SZ doped with 8 wt% CeO2 nanoscale particles (8CSZ)/8YSZ TBCs were fabricated by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) on nickel-based superalloy substrates with NiCoCrAlY as the bond coating. The thermal cycling behavior of the three as-sprayed TBCs was investigated systematically at 1000 ℃ and 1200 ℃. The results reveal that the thermal cycling lifetime of the nanostructured DCL 8CSZ/8YSZ TBCs is the longest among them, which is largely due to the fact that the intermediate layer buffer effect of the DCL structure, more porosity and improvement of thermal expansion coefficient from doping CeO2 nanoparticles can relieve thermal stress to a great extent at elevated temperature. The failure mechanism of the nanostructured TBCs has been discussed in detail.  相似文献

Gadolinium zirconate (Gd2Zr2O7) prepared by solid state reaction exhibited a defect fluorite-type structure. Reactions between Gd2Zr2O7 ceramic and vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), and V2O5 + Na2SO4 mixture were investigated from 700 to 1000 °C in air using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). V2O5 reacts with Gd2Zr2O7 to form gadolinium vanadate (GdVO4) and monoclinic zirconia (m-ZrO2) at 900 and 1000 °C in air. However, no chemical reaction product between Na2SO4 and Gd2Zr2O7 is found at 900 and 1000 °C in air. V2O5 reacts with equal molar Na2SO4 to form sodium vanadate (NaVO3) at 610 °C. In the temperature range of 700–1000 °C, Na2SO4 + V2O5 mixture reacts with Gd2Zr2O7 in air to form the final reaction products of GdVO4 and m-ZrO2.  相似文献

The purpose of the current study was evaluation and comparison of hot corrosion behaviors of plasma-sprayed conventional and nanostructured yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). Hot corrosion studies were performed on the surface of coatings in the presence of a molten mixture of V2O5+Na2SO4 at 1000 °C for 30 h. Results indicated that the hot corrosion mechanisms of conventional and nanostructured YSZ coatings were similar. The reaction between corrosive salt and Y2O3 produced YVO4, leaching Y2O3 from YSZ and causing the detrimental phase transformation of zirconia from tetragonal to monoclinic. The nanostructured coating, as compared to its conventional counterpart, in spite of a further reaction with the corrosive salt, showed a higher degradation resistance during the hot corrosion test due to increased compliance capabilities resulting from the presence of an extra source of porosity associated with the nano-zones.  相似文献

We have investigated the structural and chemical stability of La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 (LSM)–8 mol.% yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) composite. LSM and YSZ powders were mixed and sintered at 1400 °C for 10 h in controlled atmosphere (PO2 = 0.21 to 10?6 atm). The unit cell volume of LSM increases during exposure to reduced oxygen partial pressure while it remains unchanged for YSZ. During reduction in the oxygen partial pressure from 0.21 atm to 10?6 atm, the solubility of manganese in YSZ increases from ~10 at.% to ~15 at.%. Lower oxygen partial pressure also results in the grain growth and formation of La2Zr2O7 and MnOx (Mn3O4) compounds lowering the stability of the LSM–YSZ composite. On subsequent sintering in 0.21 atm PO2, the La2Zr2O7 and MnOx compounds tend to disappear indicating the reversibility of the interaction. The reversibility of LSM–YSZ reaction has been independently confirmed using La2Zr2O7 and MnOx.  相似文献

Zirconates with pyrochlore structure, such as Gd2Zr2O7, are new promising thermal barrier coatings because of their very low thermal conductivity and good chemical resistance against molten salts. However, their coefficient of thermal expansion is low, therefore their thermal fatigue resistance is compromised. As a solution, the combination of yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ) and Gd2Zr2O7 can reduce the thermal contraction mismatch between the thermal barrier coating parts. In the present study, two possible designs have been performed to combine YSZ/Gd2Zr2O7. On the one hand, a multilayer coating was obtained where YSZ layer was deposited between a Gd2Zr2O7 layer and a bond coat. On the other hand, a functionally-graded coating was designed where different layers with variable ratios of YSZ/Gd2Zr2O7 were deposited such that the composition gradually changed along the coating thickness.Multilayer and functionally-graded coatings underwent isothermal and thermally-cycled treatments in order to evaluate the oxidation, sintering effects and thermal fatigue resistance of the coatings. The YSZ/Gd2Zr2O7 multilayer coating displayed better thermal behaviour than the Gd2Zr2O7 monolayer coating but quite less thermal fatigue resistance compared to the conventional YSZ coating. However, the functionally-graded coating displays a good thermal fatigue resistance. Hence, it can be concluded that this kind of design is ideal to optimise the behaviour of thermal barrier coatings.  相似文献

Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) has been considered as the material of choice for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), but it becomes unstable at high temperatures and its thermal conductivity needs to be further reduced. In this study, 1 mol% RE2O3 (RE=La, Nd, Gd, Yb) and 1 mol% Yb2O3 co-doped YSZ (1RE1Yb–YSZ) were fabricated to obtain improved phase stability and reduced thermal conductivity. For 1RE1Yb–YSZ ceramics, the phase stability of metastable tetragonal (t′) phase increased with decreasing RE3+ size, mainly attributable to the reduced driving force for t′ phase partitioning. The thermal conductivity of 1RE1Yb–YSZ was lower than that of YSZ, with the value decreasing with the increase of the RE3+ size mainly due to the increased elastic field in the lattice, but 1La1Yb–YSZ exhibited undesirably high thermal conductivity. By considering the comprehensive properties, 1Gd1Yb–YSZ ceramic could be a good potential material for TBC applications.  相似文献

Double-ceramic-layer (DCL) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) of La2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)2O7 (LZ7C3) and Eu3+-doped zirconia, which was partially stabilised by 8 wt% yttria (8YSZ:Eu), were prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying. A thermal cycling test was carried out. The 8YSZ:Eu sublayer exposed during thermal cycling could produce visible luminescence under ultraviolet (UV) illumination, providing an indication of the spallation and damage degree of the coating. The result shows that the application of a Eu3+-doped luminescence sublayer can be a very simple and useful non-destructive technique to indicate the spallation and damage degree of DCL coatings.  相似文献
