Since pervaporation performance of ethanol‐permselective silicalite membrane, which is an aluminum‐free hydrophobic zeolite, in the separation of fermentation broths by yeast are negatively affected by succinic acid, the potential of pervaporation using silicone rubber‐coated silicalite membranes of ethanol fermentation broths, not containing succinic acid, by Zymomonas mobilis was investigated for the reliable production of concentrated bioethanol. In the separation of fermentation broths, the pervaporation performance was influenced by nutrients used for the preparation of fermentation broths. In the separation of a broth prepared with yeast extract, pervaporation performance was greatly compromised by accumulation of a substance(s) having an ultraviolet absorption maximum at approximately 260 nm not only in total flux, but also in permeate ethanol concentration compared to the separation of binary ethanol/water mixtures. When supplying a prepared broth with corn steep liquor without the accumulation of a substance(s) having an ultraviolet absorption maximum at approximately 260 nm, the permeate ethanol concentration did not decrease. Treating the prepared broth with activated carbon was effective in restraining the decrease in total flux. Pervaporation performance is also deteriorated by the adsorption of lactic acid contained in corn steep liquor onto the silicalite crystals. In the separation of ternary mixtures of ethanol/water/lactic acid, accomplished by adjusting the ternary mixtures to pH > 5, more than 90% of the permeation flux in the separation of binary ethanol/water mixtures was obtained, and the permeate ethanol concentration was comparable to that obtained in the separation of binary mixtures. For stably performing pervaporation, it is important to prepare ethanol fermentation broths by Zymomonas mobilis in which lactic acid concentration is as low as possible. For the production of highly concentrated bioethanol by pervaporation using an ethanol‐permselective silicalite membrane, pervaporation performance was investigated using a silicalite membrane entirely covered with a silicone rubber sheet to prevent direct contact with acidic compounds. By using a resistance model for membrane permeation, the separation factor of the covered silicalite membrane towards ethanol can be estimated from the individual pervaporation performances of the silicalite membrane and the silicone rubber sheet. No decrease in the ethanol concentration through the silicone rubber sheet‐covered membrane was caused when ethanol solutions containing succinic acid were supplied. By directly passing the permeate‐enriched ethanol vapor mixed with water vapor through a dehydration column packed with a molecular sieve of pore size 0.3 nm, highly concentrated bioethanol up to 97% (w/w), greater than the azeotropic point in the ethanol/water binary systems, can be obtained from 9% (w/w) fermentation broth. A coupled fermentation/pervaporation process for reliable production of concentrated ethanol was studied using ethanol permselective silicalite membranes coated with two types of silicone rubber, KE‐45 and KE‐108, as a hydrophobic material. Ethanol recovery was greatly improved by using a membrane coated with KE‐45 silicone rubber. The recovered ethanol concentration in the permeate was 67% (w/w), and the amount of recovered ethanol from the broth was more than 10 times higher than that using a non‐coated membrane. Succinic acid and glycerol, by‐products created during fermentation, interfered with the pervaporation performance of the coated membrane when used to separate an ethanol/water solution. BACKGROUND: To use butanol as a liquid fuel and feedstock, it is necessary to establish processes for refining low‐concentration butanol solutions. Pervaporation (PV) employing hydrophobic silicalite membranes for selective recovery of butanol is a promising approach. In this study, the adsorption behavior of components present in clostridia fermentation broths on membrane material (silicalite powder) was investigated. The potential of PV using silicone rubber‐coated silicalite membranes for the selective separation of butanol from model acetone–butanol–ethanol (ABE) solutions was investigated. RESULTS: The equilibrium adsorbed amounts of ABE per gram of silicalite from aqueous solutions of binary mixtures at 30 °C increased as follows: ethanol (95 mg) < acetone (100 mg) < n‐butanol (120 mg). The amount of butanol adsorbed is decreased by the adsorption of acetone and butyric acid. In the separation of ternary butanol/water/acetone mixtures, the enrichment factor for acetone decreased, compared with that in binary acetone/water mixtures. In the separation of a model acetone–butanol–ethanol (ABE) fermentation broth containing butyric acid by PV using a silicone rubber‐coated silicalite membrane, the permeate butanol concentration was comparable with that obtained in the separation of a model ABE broth without butyric acid. The total flux decreased with decreasing feed solution pH. CONCLUSION: A silicone rubber‐coated silicalite membrane exhibited highly selective PV performance in the separation of a model ABE solution. It is very important to demonstrate the effectiveness of PV in the separation of actual clostridia fermentation broths, and to identify the factors affecting PV performance. BACKGROUND: Pervaporation employing ethanol‐permselective silicalite membranes as an alternative to distillation is a promising approach for refining low‐concentration bioethanol solutions. However, to make the separation process practicable, it is extremely important to avoid the problems caused by the adsorption of succinate on the membrane during the separation process. In this work, the pervaporation of an ethanol fermentation broth without succinate was investigated, as well as the influence of several fermentation broth nutrient components. RESULTS: Candida krusei IA‐1 produces an extremely low level of succinate. The decrease in permeate ethanol concentration through a silicone rubber‐coated silicalite membrane during the separation of low‐succinate C. krusei IA‐1 fermentation broth was significantly improved when compared with that obtained using Saccharomyces cerevisiae broth. By treating the fermentation broth with activated carbon, bioethanol was concentrated as efficiently as with binary mixtures of ethanol/water. The total flux was improved upto 56% of that obtained from the separation of binary mixtures, compared with 43% before the addition of activated carbon. Nutrients such as peptone, yeast extract and corn steep liquor had a negative effect on pervaporation, but this response was distinct from that caused by succinate. CONCLUSION: For consistent separation of bioethanol from C. krusei IA‐1 fermentation broth by pervaporation, it is useful to treat the low nutrient broth with activated carbon. To further improve pervaporation performance, it will be necessary to suppress the accumulation of glycerol. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

b‐oriented silicalite‐1 membranes on porous silica supports were synthesized using gel‐free secondary growth. The porous silica supports were made by pressing crushed quartz fibers followed by sintering and polishing, and further modified by slip‐coating three layers of Stöber silica particles (1000, 350, and 50 nm). The b‐oriented seed layers were prepared by rubbing silicalite‐1 particles (2 μm × 0.8 μm × 3 μm along a‐, b‐, and c‐axis, respectively) after depositing a polymeric layer on the support. After silicalite‐1 seed deposition, a final coating of spherical silica particles was applied. Well‐intergrown, μm‐thick, b‐oriented membranes were obtained, which, after calcination, exhibited ethanol permselectivity in ethanol/water mixture pervaporation. At 60°C and for ~5 wt % ethanol/water mixtures, the best membrane exhibited overall pervaporation separation factor of 85 (corresponding to membrane intrinsic selectivity of 7.7) and total flux of 2.1 kg/(m2·h). This performance is comparable to the best performing MFI membranes reported in the literature. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 62: 556–563, 2016  相似文献

Abstract

A resistance model has been developed to describe the increased pervaporation flux and selectivity for the separation of ethanol/water mixtures with silicalite-filled silicone rubber (SR) membranes as compared to unfilled SR membranes. The model interprets the increased component flux for ethanol in terms of an increasing ethanol permeability of the membrane. Membrane permeability is given as a function of rubber and silicalite permeabilities and of the silicalite content of the membrane. It is shown that silicalite permeability varies with the type of alcohol and the alcohol concentration in the feed mixture. In the series methanol, ethanol, propanol, and butanol, the alcohol permeability of silicalite varies with the length of the alcohol molecule, the lowest permeability being found for butanol. In the presence of propanol and butanol, the silicalite particles are impermeable to water and obstruct water transport through the membrane.  相似文献

Separation of acetic acid/water mixtures by pervaporation was attempted by silicone rubbercoated polyetherimide membranes. In particular, the effect of the pore size of the polyetherimide membrane and the condition of silicone rubber coating on the performance of the composite membrane was investigated. It was found that the composite membrane could become either water selective or acetic acid selective, depending on the pore size of the support membrane and the condition of the silicone rubber coating. Thus, the overall performance of the composite membrane can be governed, either by the top coated layer or by the bottom support layer.  相似文献

A new blended membrane was prepared and tested by pervaporation of light oil, a mixture of five alcohols plus water. The blended membrane was synthesized by blending poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(acrylic acid‐co‐maleic acid) sodium salt in the presence of sulfuric acid to dope the reaction. We tested several membranes in order to choose the adequate composition to have the best permselectivity. The PVA(60)–PAA‐co‐maleic acid(40) membrane was selected as it was found to be highly selective. Sorption experiments were performed using binary and ternary water–alcohol solutions. The influence of temperature and feed composition on the selectivity and flux in pervaporation was investigated for two different binary mixtures (water/ethanol, water/isobutanol) and one ternary system (water/ethanol/isobutanol). This membrane presents good permselective properties, high water flux, and good selectivity and can even be used for high‐water activities The performances of this new membrane were compared to those obtained with the PVA(90)–PAA(10) membrane synthesized recently: The fluxes observed for the water–ethanol separation were of the same order of magnitude but the selectivity was found to be much higher. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The separation of aqueous alcohol mixtures was carried out by use of a series of novel aromatic polyamide membranes. The aromatic polyamides were prepared by the direct polycondensation of 2,2′‐dimethyl‐4,4′‐bis(aminophenoxyl)biphenyl (DBAPB) with various aromatic diacids, such as terephthalic acid (TPAc), 5‐tert‐butylisophthalic acid (TBPAc), and 4,4′‐hexafluoroisopropylidenedibenzoic acid (FDAc). The pervaporation and evapomeation performance of these novel aromatic polyamide membranes for dehydrating aqueous alcohol solution were investigated. The solubility of ethanol in the aromatic polyamide membranes is higher than that of water, but the diffusivity of water through the membrane is higher than that of ethanol. The effect of diffusion selectivity on the membrane separation performances plays an important role in the evapomeation process. Compared with pervaporation, evapomeation effectively increases the permselectivity of water. Moreover, the effect of aromatic diacids on the polymer chain packing density, pervaporation, and evapomeation performance were investigated. It was found that the permeation rate could be increased by introduction of a bulky group into the polymer backbone. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 88: 2688–2697, 2003  相似文献

The pervaporation behavior of fermentation broth was investigated experimentally and compared with those started with ethanol mixtures. Ethanol was produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae utilizing technical grade glucose and recovered by pervaporation using a composite polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane prepared in our laboratory. Ethanol concentration in fermentation broth decreased to a relatively low level when pervaporation was coupled with fermentation. The more active cells appeared in the fermentation broth, the better the membrane performance was.  相似文献

Sulfated zirconia‐poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes were prepared, and pervaporation performances for aqueous organic mixtures were investigated. These hydrophilic membranes were formed by crosslinking poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with the solid acid of sulfated zirconia by an acid‐catalyzed reaction. The pervaporation performances were measured as a function of the content ratio of sulfated zirconia to PVA, which affected the degree of swelling for water and the crosslinking density of the membrane. The membrane selectivity in pervaporation of aqueous organic mixtures increased in order of acetic acid < ethanol < 2‐ethoxyethanol without sacrificing the permeation rate, depending on their feed compositions. The effects of feed temperature and concentration on the membrane performance were also significant. It was found that sulfated zirconia in the membrane preparation played an important role as a filler material as well as an effective crosslinking or insolubilization agent in improving and controlling the membrane performance, i.e., permeation rate and selectivity. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract

Composite hollow fiber membranes were prepared by coating polyethersulfone hollow fibers with silicone rubber. The hollow fiber membranes so produced were found to be water selective when they were used for the separation of feed ethanol/water mixtures by pervaporation. When fructose was added to feed ethanol/water mixtures, a decrease in permeation rate and an increase in water selectivity were observed. The decrease in the permeation rate was possible to assume, but the noticed increase in water selectivity was against our expectation, since the vapor pressure of water decreases while that of ethanol increases when sugars are added to mixtures of ethanol and water. Water selectivity of the membrane was enhanced with an increase in the amount of fructose in the feed.  相似文献

Three imide‐containing poly(amic acids) were synthesized and used for homogeneous and composite membrane preparation. The transport properties of composite membranes consisting of an imide‐containing poly(amic acid) top layer on an asymmetric porous poly(phenylene oxide) support were studied in the pervaporation of aqueous solutions of organic liquids (ethanol, isopropanol, acetone, and ethylacetate) and organic/organic mixtures (ethylacetate/ethanol, methanol/cyclohexane). For most of the aqueous/organic mixtures, the composite membranes exhibited dehydration properties. Dilute aqueous solutions of ethylacetate were an exception. In these solutions, the composite membranes exhibited organophilic properties, high permeability, and selectivity with respect to ethylacetate. In the pervaporation of methanol/cyclohexane mixtures, methanol was removed with very high selectivity. To account for specific features of pervaporation on the composite membranes, the sorption and transport properties of homogeneous membranes prepared from polymers comprising the composite membrane [imide‐containing poly(amic acids) and poly(phenylene oxide)] were studied. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Boron‐substituted MFI (B‐ZSM‐5) zeolite membranes with high pervaporation (PV) performance were prepared onto seeded inexpensive macroporous α‐Al2O3 supports from dilute solution and explored for the separation of ethanol/water mixtures by PV. The effects of several parameters on microstructures and PV performance of the B‐ZSM‐5 membranes were examined systematically, including the seed size, synthesis temperature, crystallization time, B/Si ratio, H2O/SiO2 ratio and silica source. A continuous and compact B‐ZSM‐5 membrane was fabricated from solution containing 1 tetraethyl orthosilicate/0.2 tetrapropylammonium hydroxide/0.06 boric acid/600 H2O at 448 K for 24 h, showing a separation factor of 55 and a flux of 2.6 kg/m2 h along with high reproducibility for a 5 wt % ethanol/water mixture at 333 K. It was demonstrated that the incorporation of boron into mobile five (MFI) structure could increase the hydrophobicity of B‐ZSM‐5 membrane evidenced by the improved contact angle and amount of the adsorbed ethanol, and thus enhance the PV property for ethanol/water mixtures. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 62: 2447–2458, 2016  相似文献

The pervaporation performances of a series of functionalized syndiotactic poly(styrene‐co‐4‐methylstyrene) (SPSM) membranes for various alcohol mixtures were investigated. The syndiotactic polystyrene copolymers, poly(styrene‐co‐4‐methylstyrene) (SPSM), were prepared by styrene with 4‐methylstyrene using a Cp*Ti(OCH3)3/methyl aluminoxane (metallocene/MAO) catalyst. The effect of functionalization on the thermal properties and polymer structure of the SPSM membranes were also investigated. The crystallinity of the functionalized SPSM membrane is lower than that of the unfunctionalized SPSM membranes. The water molecules preferentially permeate through the SPSM membranes. Compared with unfunctionalized SPSM membranes, the functionalized SPSM membrane effectively increases the membrane formation performances and the pervaporation performances. The optimun pervaporation performance (a separation factor of 510 and permeation rate of 220 g/m2h) was obtained by the bromination of SPSM (SPSMBr) membrane with a 90 wt % aqueous ethanol solution. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: In this work, the selective extraction of ethanol by pervaporation through a POMS (polyoctylmethyl siloxane) hydrophobic membrane supplied by GKKS (Germany) was investigated. First, binary ethanol aqueous solutions were studied considering the effect of ethanol feed concentration (0–11 wt%) and operating temperature (307.55–326.35 K). The effect of some by‐products of the ethanol fermentation, such as glycerol, succinic acid, butanol and acetone, on the pervaporation performance has been analyzed. RESULTS: For binary ethanol aqueous solutions, it was found that water permeation flux remained more or less constant while ethanol permeation flux increased continuously when increasing ethanol feed concentration. However, water and ethanol permeances did not change much in the concentration and temperature range studied. It was observed that the addition of glycerol and succinic acid sharply decreased the total permeation flux while ethanol concentration in the permeate was hardly affected. The addition of butanol and acetone resulted in a lower separation factor for ethanol through the POMS membrane. CONCLUSIONS: For ethanol aqueous solutions the POMS membrane was found to be selective towards ethanol, although it does not present higher separation factors than distillation in the concentration range covered in this work. The presence of other components of the fermentation broth has a great influence in the pervaporation behavior. Further work must be done on the study of multicomponent and real mixtures. Pervaporation (PV) performances of silicalite‐filled polyether‐block‐amide (PEBA) membranes for separation of ethanol/water mixtures have been studied. The effects of silicalite content, ethanol concentration in feed, and feed temperature on the PV performances of the membranes have been investigated. It is found that addition of silicalite can improve PV performances of PEBA membranes. When the silicalite content is 2.0 wt %, both permeation flux and separation factor reach the maximum values, which are 833 g/m2h and 3.6, respectively. With increasing of ethanol in the feed and feed temperature, both separation factor and total flux increased. The higher permeation activation energy of ethanol (Eethanol = 21.62 kJ/mol) compared to that of water (Ewater = 18.33 kJ/mol) for the 2.0 wt% silicalite‐filled PEBA membrane accounts for the increase of the separation factor with feed temperature.  相似文献
